## MOTIVATION AND RATIONALE
Social good has a big impact on society. Indeed, the term “social good”
refers to something which benefits the general public, and at the same
time, it is something which reflects and respects their wishes, being
‘from’ the people. The social good can be envisioned as global citizens
uniting to unlock the potential of individuals through collaboration to
create a positive societal impact. Much interest has been produced in the
last years, and new proposals and technologies have been considered. Among
them, Blockchain, distributed ledger technologies, and decentralized
technologies in general, such as IPFS, have been considered to improve all
the aspects of the social good. Blockchain and decentralized technologies
have had a big impact on the world. In particular, Blockchain technology
has been applied to several fields, such as e-health, IoT, media, etc. The
big question around the definition of this track is: “How does the
blockchain have a big impact on the social good? And how can
decentralization improve the ICT industries?”. The track manages the
possible application of decentralized technologies in research fields
included in the global scope of the social good. These address sectors such
as agriculture, supply chain traceability, energy, health, property rights
and digital identities, ranging from a global to a local scope. More
recently in the realm of civic participation, civil society initiatives and
social economies, blockchains are being tested to implement collaborative
models: social finance and local currency schemes, peer-to-peer production
and exchanges, decentralized organizations management and decision-making,
purpose-driven tokens that incentivize pro-social behaviors, etc.
Examples of applications involving considerable experimentation and
innovation are complementary and community currency systems. These systems
aim to support humanitarian aid initiatives, self-organizing local
community development and basic income projects. These involve novel
tokenization mechanisms based on smart contracts that necessitate further
investigation and discussion. While the revolutionary potential of
blockchains has been largely tested (in the financial domain in
particular), its possible applications in social domains and to address
sustainability challenges have been explored far less.
This special track aims to explore and debate the main concepts and
implications of blockchain technology, how it can be a driver of innovation
and its positive effects on our societies, industry, legal systems and
economic/financial systems. Also, the risks and uncertainties that
blockchain arrows are welcome to be debated in this section, as regards:
conflicts arising from the introduction, in mutable social interactions, of
logics based on tokenization, automation, and trustlessness; energy
consumption and environmental impacts; technical accessibility and digital
skill divides. This special track will provide both academic and industry
researchers with a forum to discuss the impact, future, and limitations of
blockchain technology regarding its effect across specific industries,
economics, finance, law, civil society initiatives, social economies, the
not-for-profit sector, etc.

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message]
Dear Researchers/Authors,
You are invited to submit your high-quality research findings to the
Special Session 11: "Sensing and Data Platforms: what is ahead of us" of
the 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and
Forestry (MetroAgriFor).
October 29-31, 2024 - Padua, Italy
Website: https://www.metroagrifor.org/special-session-11
Aims and Scope
The role of sensing, including in-situ, proximity and remote, is
increasingly crucial for agriculture and forestry.
Huge investments have been made in this field - consider for instance
satellite constellations for remote sensing, the thriving UAV sector, and
the dawning sector of terrestrial rovers - and benefits are evident in
several application areas.
The other side of the coin is represented by the data platforms used to
collect, store, and process the huge amount of data coming from sensing
platforms.
Such data platforms should, among others, provide interoperable data
through open interfaces (APIs) to different classes of users, but such
functionality has not yet reached its full potential.
In Europe, there have been several recent initiatives focused on enhancing
data sharing and processing.
One key effort is the European Strategy for Data, which introduces the
concept of a Common European Data Space and includes actions to deploy
Agriculture and Green Deal sectorial data spaces.
Additionally, the Horizon Europe framework is providing funding for the
establishment of European Partnerships that bring together the European
Commission with private and/or public partners to address pressing
challenges through collaborative research and innovation projects.
One such partnership, the European Partnership for Agriculture of Data,
aims to support sustainable agriculture in the EU and improve policy
monitoring and implementation by leveraging digital and data technologies
for environmental observation.
The goal of this special session is to investigate the potential and the
challenges of both sensing and data platforms, looking to future
developments, and also considering economic and legal aspects to be
carefully taken into consideration.
Contributions are expected to contribute to, but are not limited to, the
following topics:
- sensing systems, both local and remote, and recent developments;
- state of the art of data platforms linked to sensing systems, standards,
interoperability enablers, and sustainability of their business model;
- GEOSS Data Sharing and Management Principles, FAIR principles, and other
interoperable solutions with the potential to further push the use of
sensing data;
- economic and legal aspects that can fuel or limit the use of such systems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
The 4th ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social
Good (GoodIT 2024) is a premier international forum for researchers,
practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent
innovations, trends and concerns, as well as practical challenges
encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of data and technology for
addressing Social Good and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Within the
context of the conference, we are organizing a special track ''Avoiding an
Internet of Trash'', focused on a sustainable Internet of Things. We are
witnessing an ever-increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices
with predictions of between 50 and 125 billion IoT devices by 2030. There
is currently no information about how long these devices will be used. If
one goes by the lifetime of smartphones or laptops, this could be in the
order of 4 to 6 years. Without any action, this situation could produce a
large amount of electronic waste. Many factors contribute to this
situation, including issues of planned obsolescence of devices, software
maintenance, volatile businesses, poor battery capacity, and unnecessary
gadgets. This challenge is further compounded by the fact that there is
often limited interoperability between devices and little reuse as well as
limited recycling of unused IoT devices. This special track aims at
creating a forum for discussion on how to address all these issues. We
welcome submissions on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Sustainable powering of IoT devices and energy harvesting;
- Sustainable electronics for IoT devices;
- Methods and frameworks for reprogramming of IoT devices;
- Modular and reconfigurable IoT device architectures;
- Interoperability of IoT devices, protocols, and frameworks;
- Environmental impact of IoT devices;
- Sustainable deployment of IoT applications;
- Analysis of the usefulness of IoT devices and applications;
- IoT applications for sustainability;
- Behavioural and societal aspects in the sustainable use of IoT devices
and resources.
*** SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ***
Papers submitted to this special track must be unpublished original works.
Submitted papers must satisfy the same criteria in terms of paper length
and formatting requirements as papers submitted to the main conference
(more details are provided at
https://blogs.uni-bremen.de/goodit2024/submission-of-papers/). Accepted
papers must follow the formatting instructions of the main conference. At
least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present
the work at the conference on site; otherwise, the paper will not be
published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be

*SCOPE*
Exploring the development of our digital future requires a comprehensive
examination of both
individual and societal consequences. Placing excessive emphasis on
individual gains, a
common practice in individualistic societies for many years, has hindered
the ability to grasp
the complex dynamics and forward-thinking mindset essential for the
sustainability of a
contemporary society.
The evolving landscape of technology and the ongoing digital advancements
have paved the
way for creative applications in the field of education, allowing us to
adapt to the
ever-changing circumstances. When shaping a new approach for Information
Systems and
Information Technology education, it is crucial to emphasize the
significance of individuals
as key stakeholders and integral members of the wider community, while also
recognizing the
pivotal role of collaboration.
In this track, we are searching for papers employing innovative technology
and approaches to
educate the future generation towards world equality, collegiality,
inclusion and a more
cooperative learning for a sustainable digital future. Values which are
emphasized in the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which overall aim towards creating a
more equitable,
sustainable, and peaceful world.
This track is particularly relevant to IS/IT educators and those creative
IT practitioners who
care about developing a sustainable digital future.
*TOPICS*
Potential topics for papers include (but are not limited to):
• Sustainable and innovative education technologies and practices
• Universal access to quality education
• The new role for IS/IT in society and education and the value of
information and knowledge
• The role of cooperative learning for life-long learning and societal
developments
• Digital transformation: opportunities and challenges for education, work,
and society
• Digital learning environments: Innovations and trends
• Equality, diversity, and inclusion in education, work, and society
• The use of large language models and generative AI in education

Call for Papers - ACM MobiHoc 2024: Oct 14-17, 2024, Athens, Greece
*https://www.sigmobile.org/mobihoc/2024/
<https://www.sigmobile.org/mobihoc/2024/>*
**
ACM MobiHoc is a premier conference with a highly selective single-track
technical program dedicated to addressing the challenges emerging from
networked and distributed systems that must operate in the face of
dynamics, ranging from changing user demands to connectivity and resource
availability. Examples of such dynamic networks include wired/wireless
communication networks, datacenters, Internet-of-Things and sensors, mobile
autonomous systems, energy, social, and transportation networks. We
encourage work that presents new performance evaluation methods, novel
algorithms, or provides fundamental insights for these systems.
We are interested both in innovative works in an unexplored and/or emerging
topic in the broad area of networks, and in novel findings and/or new
insights that build on existing works. The specific areas of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Internet-of-Things (IoT), 5G, and next-generation wireless systems
* Blockchain, social networks, societal networks, and emerging networked
systems
* Cloud computing, edge computing, datacenter networks, and distributed
computing over networks
* Software Defined Networking, Network Function Virtualization, and
virtual Radio Access Networks
* Information-centric networking, network caching, and coded caching
* Trust, security, and privacy in networks and networked systems
* Coded computation and inference in networks
* Incentive mechanism and interaction analysis of networked systems,
network economics
* Big-data analytics, machine learning for networks and networked
systems, and network support to machine learning
* Modeling, analysis, optimization, and control in computer and mobile
networks
* Networked and mobile unmanned/autonomous systems
* Experimental studies on mobile networks and networked systems
* Networked sensing and communication with new medium, e.g.,
light/acoustic/mmWave
* Low power sensor protocols and energy-harvesting systems
* Wearables and mobile health
Authors can keep their names on their submitted paper, i.e., submissions
are not required to be double blind. Authors can also prepare technical
reports that are made available on their own websites and on purely
archiving organizations such as arXiv.org. However, all submissions must
comply with the dual submission policy. Each paper has a chance to submit a
one-page rebuttal for the reviews. All submitted papers will be considered
for a Best Paper Award. A selected set of papers will be chosen for
fast-tracked publication in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. Papers are
expected to be direct and specific about their results, contributions, and
context.
