Description:
Digital Twins (DTs) represent a methodology that is an important aspect of
the tools and techniques integral to Digital Transformation and the
Internet of Things. The adoption of Digital Twins has already had an
impact on a wide range of IoT applications and use cases and is likely to
have significant impact in the future. This is evidenced by the activity
within industry, professional organizations, associations, and public
sector programs devoted to Digital Twins, as well as the inclusion of the
subject in technical conferences and events.
There are at least four major high level categories where DTs are likely to
have broad adoption, including: manufacturing, products/goods, services,
and processes. The foremost aspects of DTs is the use of a digital
representation of physical objects/artifacts and of physical/procedural
activities. Just as important is the development of digital models that
capture the dynamics of the object/artifacts under varying conditions. That
in turn implies the instrumentation of the actual objects/artifacts with
sensors to create a feedback loop that improves the fidelity of the DTs to
predict or express their dynamic state – that is to capture the past,
understand the present, and be able to predict the future of the
object/artifact. In dealing with complex or compound objects the Digital
Twin may in turn be composed of a federation or orchestration of many DTs
that must interact with each other, and accurately represent the components
or sub-systems of the object.
The value and importance of DTs is to help make decisions, whether
autonomously using the DTs to control activities/procedures of physical
objects, or to provide the information and analysis that allows end-users
and operators to make better decisions, or to improve their experience. The
vision within the DT community is that DTs will be able to operate anywhere
and have access to a powerful ubiquitous and distributed infrastructure at
any time, thus lowering threshold for their common use and deployment. That
journey has already started but is far from complete and there are
considerable opportunities within the research community to contribute to
the underlying science and technology.

SCOPE
Autonomous and human-controlled mobile objects are increasingly present in
water, land and sky scenarios, becoming an essential tool for fully
automated or human-assisted missions, services, and applications.
Smartphones and IoT devices are widespread in our cities, creating a
hyper-connected society. Groups of autonomous vehicles, even flying ones,
can perform actions and provide services and applications in several
application fields, such as environment, agriculture, disaster management
and recovery, smart cities, smart transportation and entertainment.
Intelligent vehicles provide new smart environments (cities, harbours,
factories, offices, homes, etc.) with the additional features given by
their actuation capabilities, which aim at improving, at the same time,
the performance of a specific mission as well as the performance of the
underlying communication network. The three different contexts: land,
water and sky, as well as the integrated contexts, have already gained
momentum showing the opportunities to provide benefits to our whole
society. However, to fully exploit this potential, we first have to
address numerous research issues, to design and develop reliable, green,
affordable and efficient networking and applications. This track focuses
on the open research challenges and their practical solutions, as well as
on the standardization activities and the applications and products
already existing.

Call for Papers
Workshop: Vision and Challenges of Wireless Communication for Future
Industrial IoT
IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio
Communications
5-8 September 2023 | Toronto, ON, Canada
DESCRIPTION:
Industry 4.0 is evolving through the digital transformation of
manufacturing processes to bridge the physical and digital worlds through
cyber-physical systems. The development towards Industry 5.0 has also been
initiated, emphasizing sustainability, resilience, and a human-centric
approach. The next generation of wireless technologies is envisioned to
intelligently interconnect humans and machines from the physical world and
their digital representations in the virtualized digital world.
Advancements in cloud and edge computing, artificial intelligence, and
robotics, also open new dimensions in revolutionizing these processes.
Moreover, digital twinning of the physical entities enables support for the
engineering, maintenance, reconfiguration, and recycling of industrial
automation systems. Accordingly, numerous visionary use cases are expected
to emerge requiring deterministic communication capabilities. The challenge
of deterministic and bounded low-latency communication is being addressed
by standardization bodies such as IEEE 802.1, IETF DetNet, 3GPP
time-sensitive communication, and industrial alliances such as 5G-ACIA.
Ultra-reliable and low-latency communication has been an important aspect
of 5G communication that enables the support for determinism and
integration with deterministic communication technologies and will further
be developed under the 6G vision. The global Industry 4.0/5.0 market is
expected to gain momentum by 2028, however, their application requirements
are one of the most challenging for wireless systems. Therefore, innovation
is needed in all supporting technologies. Communication through 6G
technologies will enable and foster the development of technologies for
multiple industry verticals and is going to play a key role in improving
system efficiency and availability.
This workshop is an initiative of European Cooperation in Science &
Technology (COST) The Intelligence-Enabling Radio Communications for
