CALL FOR PAPERS
MidSEE 2015
1st Workshop on Middleware for a Smarter Use of Electric Energy
March 12, 2015
in conjunction with NetSys 2015, Cottbus, Germany
https://www.netsys2015.com/workshops-tutorials/midsee/
=======================================================================
MOTIVATION & WORKSHOP SCOPE
Smart energy meters are increasingly installed in newly constructed
buildings worldwide, as regulated by, e.g., the European Union's Energy
Services Directive. Their combination with the vision of an Internet
of Things, in which billions of embedded devices will continually
monitor the environment, enables the fine-grained monitoring of
household and office energy usage and hence a large range of novel
services. While many such functions have been devised so far (e.g.,
advice how to save energy or the disaggregation of electricity bills),
these solutions commonly rely on the availability of hard- and software
systems by a single manufacturer. Interoperability, including the
potential to integrate new energy metering devices, is mostly
unsupported due to the wide variety of (non-compatible) standards and
communication protocols.
This workshop provides a platform to present current research
activities in communications and processing of energy consumption data,
with its primary focus on electric energy usage. The scope of the
workshop includes contributions that address the integration of energy
metering equipment from different manufacturers into a single
middleware system which operates on a building level, as well as novel
means to collect, process and visualize these data. Accepted papers
will not only present novel research results in these domains, but also
comprise an evaluation in which their merits are assessed.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel energy metering hardware designs and experiences
- Data collection and command distribution protocols for energy
management systems
- Middleware systems for energy data, including novel local data
processing algorithms
- Control of alternative energy sources to increase their production
efficiency
- Innovative tools to model and visualize energy expenditure and
production
- Sensing and actuation of electrical loads
- Privacy and security in energy management middleware systems
- User interfaces for energy display, management and control
PAPER SUBMISSION
Authors are invited to submit papers of up to 6 pages in IEEE
two-column format. Submissions must be original and should not have
been published previously or be under consideration for publication
while being evaluated for this workshop. Accepted papers will be
published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. More details about the
submission process can be found on the website.

CALL FOR PAPERS
<Special Issue on “Communications Technologies and Infrastructures for Smart
eHealth Systems” in IEEE Systems Journal>
SCOPE
Research advances in healthcare domain have facilitated the integration of
different technologies for smart, cost-effective, reliable, and pervasive
health monitoring of chronic diseases - which have affected around one
billion people worldwide. Current research efforts focus on developing
real-time communication methods, mostly for Body Area Networks (BANs) that
are used to deliver patients´ information effectively. These efforts are
limited to communication within a BAN, however less attention has been given
to connect multiple BANs to remote servers in real-time. In addition, there
is a limited study on the integration of BANs with different technologies
including mobile cloud computing - a technology that may assist in storing
and processing the huge amount of BAN data at competitive costs. Machine to
Machine (M2M) is also considered to be a valuable tool in delivering BAN
data to a remote server/cloud for further analysis. This may assist in
reducing risks and cost of remote health monitoring. Unlike conventional
research in BANs where researchers focused on individual networks, there is
a need to develop innovative communication methods with a focus on complete
and smart eHealth systems. This smart eHealth system must integrate the
aforementioned technologies with multiple BANs, and provide rich healthcare
services to end users. It calls for research on versatile topics ranging
from Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols to BANs
coexistence, traffic characterization, cloud resource allocation, and cloud
monitoring and maintenance.
This special issue will focus on novel communication methods for smart
eHealth systems, by identifying new perspectives and highlight potential
research issues and challenges. Specifically, this special issue will
demonstrate how the emerging technologies including cloud computing and/or
M2M could be used in future healthcare systems. Original review and survey
articles will be considered as well. The topics of interest include, but are
not limited to:
- M2M communication methods
- Energy-efficient PHY/MAC and networking protocols
- BANs and mobile cloud computing
- Cloud resource allocation and monitoring
- Wearable and implantable computing
- IoT for smart eHealth systems
- Fault tolerance, reliability and scalability
- Traffic characterization
- Coexistence issues of multiple BANs
- Security and privacy
- QoS issues in BANs/cloud computing
- Experimental and simulation-based methods
- Case studies of smart eHealth architectures
Papers should address the above specific topics from the system perspective
and in the context of eHealth systems in order to be considered for this
special issue.

---------------- Call for Contributions -------------------
2nd European Workshop on Testbed-Based Wireless Research
November 19th 2014
KTH Main Campus, Stockholm, Sweden
http://people.kth.se/~perz/ewtbwr/2014/ws.html
### Workshop scope ###
Over the last decade software-defined radios have become an important
tool for evaluating novel ideas on algorithms and protocols for wireless
communications and networking. This has been recognized by many research
groups in academia and industry, leading to a steady proliferation of
wireless testbed equipment around the world. This is accompanied by a
massive increase in research output related to experimental evaluation
rather than traditional methods like mathematical analysis or simulations.
In this workshop, we intend to offer the community a meeting venue for
knowledge exchange in a rather informal way. The workshop is dedicated to
1. The presentation of novel research results at an early stage without
formal paper submission, reviewing and a subsequent workshop proceeding.
This gives researchers the opportunity to get feedback on their work at
an early stage, likely improving subsequent publications.
2. Sharing prototyping best-practice and development experience with
other researchers and developers in the community, and discussing
initiatives and concerns with respect to different development platforms
together with representatives of the platform development teams.
To achieve this, the workshop is composed of three different parts:
- Presentation slots for (early) research results, accompanied by an
abstract but no formal paper published later in a proceeding.
- Poster and demo presentations also accompanied by an abstract but no
paper presented in a proceeding.
- Parallel two-hour community meetings, with Mango and National
Instruments respectively. The two communities will present the latest
new from their respective development platforms USRP (National
instruments) and WARP (Mango). These community meetings will also have
the opportunity for researchers to discuss their concerns, needs, ideas,
suggestions etc. with the company representatives and the broader
community.
For paper, poster or demo presentation, we solicit contributions in
the broad areas of wireless communications and networking as long as
they are related to experimental work. Areas of interest are (but not
limited to):
- Physical layer design
- Protocol design, not only limited to the medium access control layer
- Network optimization and management
- Validation results, i.e. performance comparisons between theoretical
and experimental work
- Tools for experimental platforms (i.e. new libraries, novel
hardware/software designs etc.)
### Registration ###
For participants the workshop is free of charge, i.e. we do not request
a registration fee. However, participants need to register:
- Pure participation requires a registration by November 1st.
- Talks need to be registered with a title and an abstract by October
15th. The organizing committee will decide on the assignment of
presentation slots if we receive too many registrations for talks. The
slot assignments will be based on relevance to the workshop community
and novelty of the contribution.
- Demos are accepted as they are proposed, as well as poster
presentations. Here, we request a registration by November 1st.
Abstracts for talks and demos should be limited to two pages in IEEE
conference style format.
Please register talks, demos and/or participation by sending an email to
per.zetterberg(a)ee.kth.se with subject [EWT] .

CALL FOR PAPERS
First IEEE Workshop on Pervasive Energy Services (PerEnergy)
in conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2015
Submission Deadline: November 26, 2014
March 23, 2015, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
http://perenergy2015.cs.uni-bonn.de/
======================================================================
Scope of the Workshop
---------------------
A wealth of unexplored knowledge exists in the power data collected
from smart meters and smart plugs (i.e., metering equipment for
individual wall outlets). Analysis of the data may be used to provide
context-based services (e.g., presence detection), but also serve as
the foundation for novel services (e.g. automated recommendations for
energy savings). To date, the potential of this domain has barely been
explored, although more and more energy data is becoming available due
to the increasing number of deployed smart metering equipment. At the
moment, one of the most important research challenges in smart energy
systems is thus the creation of value-added services that exploit the
information content in energy generation and consumption data in such
a way that they can inspire new functionalities and context models.
The aim of this workshop is thus to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum
for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in
the numerous opportunities opened up by the use of energy data in
context-aware systems. It furthermore serves as a forum for the smart
energy research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and
the future development of smart energy management systems in general.
Topics of Interest
------------------
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel architectures for the integration of smart meter/smart plugs
into pervasive computing systems
- Seamless energy meter integration in the design and architecture of
smart home/office spaces
- Applications relying on energy data including, for instance,
energy optimization and sustainable operation of smart
cities, household load disaggregation, generation and load
forecasting, and other means for informed load shifting
- Novel business models relying on energy data
- Collection, processing, and integration of energy data to improve
the control over loads and generation (e.g., distributed renewable
sources)
- Security and privacy considerations in smart energy metering,
including novel means to mitigate privacy and security threats
- Experiences with experimental power metering system prototypes and
pilots
- Power metering testbeds and data sets for the comparison of
household characteristics and processing approaches in a globalized
world
- Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research
Submission Instructions
-----------------------
Authors are invited to submit regular (full) papers for presentation
at the workshop, describing original, previously unpublished work,
which is not currently under review by another workshop, conference,
or journal. Regular papers should present novel perspectives within
the general scope of the workshop.
Submissions of papers must be formatted according to the IEEE 8.5x11
conference format and must not exceed 6 pages. Papers in excess of page
limits shall not be considered for review or publication.
Accepted papers will appear in the IEEE PerCom '15 Workshops
proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society Press. The authors
of accepted papers must guarantee that their paper will be presented
at the workshop. Each accepted paper requires a full PERCOM
registration to appear in the proceedings (no registration is
available for workshops only).
Submissions are handled through the EDAS system. It is a requirement
that all authors listed in the submitted paper are also listed in
EDAS. The author section of EDAS will be locked after the workshop
submission deadline to ensure that conflicts of interest can be
properly enforced during review. If the list of authors differs
between the paper and EDAS, the paper may not be reviewed.

Scope:
The emergence of powerful handheld devices — coupled with the proliferation of cloud-based applications and an ever-increasing dominance of multimedia content in today’s Internet traffic — have ignited an unprecedented growth of mobile data traffic in recent years. Such a fact has posed significant challenges to mobile network operators, who are now pressed to maintain satisfactory quality of service under exponential traffic demands. To complicate matters, it has also become apparent that traditional approaches to expand network capacity may not suffice (e.g., new spectrum licenses and/or technology upgrades), and they can soon be outpaced by aforementioned traffic growth. Because of that, new ideas to cope with the so-called “data crunch problem” have been sought, and mobile data offloading has appeared as one of the most promising solutions: the routing of macrocellular traffic through alternative networks. Although mobile data offloading is generally th!
ought in terms of WiFi hotspots or femtocell networks, recent developments in the arena of Opportunistic Networks — one of the most interesting evolutions of traditional mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) — have paved the way for researchers from both cellular and MANET backgrounds to work together in the development of new network paradigms, architectures, and techniques that can leverage the potentials of both “worlds” to promote and enhance mobile data offloading. Motivated by this vision, we invite researchers, engineers, and practitioners from academia, industry, and the public sector to submit original contributions to the Workshop on CellulAR Traffic Offloading to Opportunistic Networks (CARTOON) 2014 in any of the following topics (but not limited to):
+ WiFi offloading

AIMS AND SCOPE
----------------------------
Wireless sensor nodes in traditional Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) use
fixed spectrum assignment policy and their performance is limited due to
limited processing and communication power. In addition, these wireless
sensor nodes require high bandwidth and their QoS requirements are
application specific. Wireless sensor nodes with cognitive radio
capabilities
(i.e., Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSNs)), can help to address these
challenges. However, there are several challenges and research problems
which are needed to be addressed in CRSNs.
In fact, cognitive radio sensor network evolved from
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in order to optimize the
bandwidth and Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements of wireless sensor
nodes.
Furthermore, CRSNs improve the spectrum utilization, and multiple overlaid
sensor networks can be deployed in a specific region. But due to
inherent hardware and energy limitation of sensor nodes, the realization of
incorporating CR capability in sensor nodes imposes challenges. On top of
that,
CRSN nodes must handle additional challenges incurred by CR functionalities
such as spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing, and spectrum management.
In this special issue, we are seeking new and unpublished work in the
domain of Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks. More specifically, this
special issue will focus on recent developments in Cognitive Radio Sensor
Networks (CRSNs).
The list of topics includes, but is not limited to:
- Spectrum sensing techniques for Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSNs)
- Spectrum management for CRSNs
- MAC protocols for CRSNs
- Innovative and cross-layer middleware solutions for CRSNs
- Applications of CRSNs (smart grids, vehicular networks, etc)
- Delay-sensitive and multimedia communication in CRSNs
- Simulation models for CRSNs
- Energy efficiency in CRSNs
- CRSN architecture: peculiar features and evolution
- Deployment strategies of CRSNs
- Wireless Body Area Networks in the context of CRSNs
- Layers in CRSNs (physical, datalink, network, transport, application)
- Developments, issues, and open areas
- Coverage and Connectivity of CRSNs
- Resource Management in CRSNs
- CRSN integration with traditional networking solutions and standards
- Future perspective for CRSNs
IMPORTANT DATES
------------------------------
