Workshop on Energy Harvesting Communications
June 30, 2014
Co-located with IEEE SECON 2014 in Singapore
Scope:
------
This workshop will focus on issues related to energy harvesting
communications, co-located with IEEE SECON 2014 in Singapore. First, for
wireless sensor networks, which operate at ultra-low-power, the small
wireless autonomous sensors can be powered by harvesting ambient power
that is scavenged in milliwatts or even microwatts. If these wireless
sensors, deployed throughout a home or factory, in-building or even
outdoors to monitor all kinds of environmental conditions, are powered
by energy harvesting, there are no batteries to replace nor labour costs
associated with replacing them, making them self-sustainable. However,
the design of communication systems has to take into account the
fluctuating and often unpredictable availability of energy source.
In a cellular network, energy harvesting can be used to provide power in
many elements of a telecom network, saving considerable costs in
electricity supply and providing low maintenance monitoring. Powering
mobile phone base stations with wind or solar power allows telecom
networks to expand beyond the limits of the power grid. The possibility
of re-distribution of the renewable energy in smart grids allows further
efficient utilization, but leads to many challenges as well.
Another important focus of this workshop is on RF energy harvesting. RF
energy is currently broadcasted from billions of radio transmitters
around the world, including mobile telephones, handheld radios, mobile
base stations, and television/radio broadcast stations. The ability to
harvest RF energy, from ambient or dedicated sources, enables wireless
charging of low-power devices and has significant benefits to product
design, usability, and reliability. Fundamental practical issues on
realizing this ability leads to many interesting research problems.
This workshop considers energy harvesting related issues in
communications. We especially welcome research work that pushes theory
to practice, such as theoretical work with emphasis on how to solve
practical problem, experimental work on new systems, and system-level
considerations for practical deployment. The workshop solicits
state-of-the-art technical papers that were not previously published and
are not currently under review for publication elsewhere. The main
sub-areas of interest include, but not limited to:
- Energy-harvesting base-station / relay / access point;
- Energy-harvesting and energy-efficient machine-to-machine (M2M)
communications;
- Low-power and energy-harvesting wireless sensor network;
- Light (solar), thermal, vibration, RF, motion, wind energy harvesting;
- Wireless charging;
- Energy harvesting, storage, and recycling;
- Energy harvesting applications.

Call for Workshop Papers
International Workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems Security (CPS-Sec) -
http://www.cps-security.org
25-27 May 2014, Marina Del Rey, California, USA
In conjunction with the 10th IEEE International Conference on
Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS 2014) -
http://www.dcoss.org
** Scope **
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) consist of large-scale interconnected
systems of heterogeneous components interacting with their physical
environments. In the CPS realm, humans and/or smart networked devices
interact with and control the physical world around them through
actuators, sensors, etc. "CPS is envisioned to transform the way
people interact with engineered systems, just as the Internet
transformed the way people interact with information." (US National
Science Foundation). Today, the boundary between cyber and physical
systems is blurring. Indeed, cyber devices that can interact with the
physical world are on the rise. For instance, smart phones and tablets
are all equipped with various sensors (e.g., accelerometers, GPS),
which enable the vision of CPS by allowing human beings to interact
with the physical world. Similarly, a multitude of CPS devices and
applications exist in industrial, transportation, medical,
home-security, building automation, emergency management, and many
other systems, which serve critical functions in our lives. Given the
popularity of the CPS applications, securing them against malicious
activities is of utmost importance. Otherwise, malfunctioning and
insecure CPS devices and applications can cause enormous damage to
individuals, businesses, and nations.
Therefore, the International Workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems
Security (CPS-Sec) seeks novel submissions describing practical and
theoretical solutions to the cybersecurity challenges facing CPS.
Submissions may represent any application area for CPS. Hence, papers
that are pertinent to the security of embedded systems, Internet of
Things, SCADA Systems, Smart-Grid Systems, Critical Infrastructure
Networks, Transportation Systems, Medical Devices are all welcome.
Example topics of interest are given below, but are not limited to:
- Secure CPS architectures
- Authentication mechanisms for CPS
- Access control for CPS
- Key management in CPS
- Data security and privacy for CPS
- Forensics for CPS
- Intrusion detection for CPS

CALL FOR PAPERS: Workshop on Physical Analytics @ ACM MobiSys 2014 (June
16, 2014)
Despite the rapid rise in online activity, people lead much of their
lives in the physical world. They travel to places, dwell at various
locations, spend time with other people, shop, go to the gym, watch
movies, and listen to music or are exposed to announcements, all of
which is often based on what interests them. Therefore, there is much to
be learnt about users from their physical actions and activities, which
is often not manifested in their online activity. Such insights can be
of benefit both to users directly and to businesses.
While huge strides have been made in online analytics to extract a
wealth of information from peoples' online activities, corresponding
work in the physical context - which we term as Physical Analytics - is
relatively nascent and scattered. The goal of the proposed workshop is
to bring together researchers and practitioners to have a conversation
on Physical Analytics, with a view to coalescing a research agenda for
the community. Our intention is keep the scope broad - spanning devices,
algorithms, systems, applications, and policy - yet have the discourse
be focused on physical analytics.
The workshop will include invited talks, a panel, and refereed papers,
with as much time devoted to discussion as to the presentations themselves.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 2nd IEEE WoWMoM Workshop on Resilient Information and Communication
Technologies for Management of Natural Disasters (RITMAN 2014)
June 16, 2014, Sydney, Australia
http://newslabx.csie.ntu.edu.tw/RITMAN14/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL INFORMATION
--------------------------------
RITMAN 2014 is the second of the workshop series on resilient information
and communication technologies (ICT) for management of natural disasters
and will be held at Sydney, Australia in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2014.
The previous workshop RITMAN 2012 was held in conjunction with the 5th
International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and Applications
(SOCA 2012), December 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan. Disaster management is a
multi-phase process, from mitigation, to preparedness, response, recovery,
to reconstruction.
RITMAN workshops focus primarily on preparedness, response and recovery
phases. In recent years, we have seen tremendous advances in technologies
for the predication and detection of natural disasters. Many standards and
tools have enabled interoperability of diverse sensors, sensor networks
and web services. Open platforms and message exchange standards have
emerged to facilitate alert delivery and support response operations.
Despite these advances, statistics on natural disasters still show that
even technologically advanced regions are not as well prepared and
resilient against calamitous events that bring damage, destruction and
loss of property and life. RITMAN workshop series aims to provide
researchers and developers with a forum for the purpose of stimulating
discussions and collaborations on missing ICT and novel applications
that can enhance preparedness and resiliency against disasters, especially
events of unforeseen sizes and severity.
The central theme of RITMAN 2014 will be the exploitation of wireless and
mobile technologies for disaster preparedness and response. Topics of
interest include but not limited to the following:
- Disaster resilient communication
- Responsive messaging services during mega disasters
- Technology for crowdsourcing disaster surveillance sensor data
- Assessment and reduction of uncertainty in disaster information
- Mobile device based cloud
- Cyber-physical devices and applications for disaster preparedness and
response
- Integration of resources and information in cyber and physical spaces
- Privacy protection of rescue/emergency information
- Disaster information system for resilient communities
PAPER SUBMISSION
--------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers that
are not being considered in another forum. Manuscripts will be limited to
4 (IEEE style) pages. Please follow the IEEE Computer Society Press
Proceedings Author Guidelines to prepare your papers with 8.5" x 11",

Betreff: [TCCC-ANNOUNCE] CFP: Computer Communications Special issue on Mobile Social Sensing
*Call for Papers:**Computer Communications*
*Special issue on **Mobile Ubiquitous** Sensing: from Social Network
Viewpoint*
*Scope:*
The emergence of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has opened up a new
door to information retrieving and built up a bridge between the physical
world and information domain. A major factor that impedes the applicability
of sensor networks is the huge deployment cost and management overhead. The
past few years have witnessed the dramatic proliferation of portable
mobiledevices,
such as smart phones and tablet computers. Notably, these popular
pocket-sized gadgets are embedded with a set of versatilesensors, which
could provide abundant data about individuals, human society and
environments. This new mobile sensor network formed by mobile devices
provides a new horizon for ubiquitous sensing at a low cost.
Under the new paradigm of mobile ubiquitous sensing, each mobile device
is held by an individual. The underlying social tie among individuals will
play an important role in the mobile sensing process. It is, therefore, of
great interest to study the mobileubiquitous sensing from the perspective
of social networks. This issue has not received much attention though the
traditional way of ubiquitous sensing has, instead, been extensively
investigated.
Topics of primary interest include, but not limited to:
l System/platform designs to enable mobile sensing
l Incentives mechanism design to guarantee the coverage, i.e., quality of
sensing.
l Social structure modeling and analysis
l Coverage improvement design via social structure
l Individual behavior modeling and analysis
l Architectural, modeling and simulation of mobile ubiquitous sensing
l New applications on ubiquitous sensing
l Energy-efficient and real-time communication protocols design
l Privacy and security preserving protocol design for mobile sensing

International Workshop on Optimization Issues in Energy Efficient
Distributed
Systems(OPTIM 2014 --
http://hpcs2014.cisedu.info/2-conference/workshops/workshop-02-optim)
As part of the International Conference on High Performance Computing &
Simulation [HPCS 2014](http://hpcs2014.cisedu.info/)
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
----------------------
Minimization of energy consumption has become a central issue in designing
distributed systems that range from wireless ad hoc networks to data
centers.
Because battery technologies have not yet matched advances in hardware and
software technologies, saving energy in battery-operated devices is very
important for mobile/wireless networks. Similarly, minimizing energy
consumption in high performance computing centers will, in addition to
saving power consumption, require less cooling mechanisms.
These new challenges require innovative and effective optimization solutions
for minimizing power consumption in distributed systems, such as
energy-efficient scheduling algorithms and energy-efficient Medium Access
Control (MAC)
protocols.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers who are
interested in addressing issues of concern and challenges related to
optimizing computing system power consumption, energy efficient systems, and
distributed systems.
Both theoretical papers and papers describing practical experiences will be
welcome.
The Workshop topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the
following:
* Optimization of energy-efficient protocols/algorithms
* Energy efficient cloud computing
* Energy-efficient scheduling algorithms
* Energy-efficient cross-layer protocols
* Energy-efficient MAC protocols
* Energy-efficient routing protocols
* Green data centers and cloud networking
* Voltage and frequency scaled networks
* Energy-efficient communication protocols
* Energy-efficient protocols/algorithms in PHY, IP layers or above
* Hardware solutions for achieving energy efficiency in large-scale
networked systems
* Power consumption profiling and estimation
* Virtualization techniques for energy efficiency
* Network models and simulation modules/tools for energy efficient
solutions
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS:
---------------------------
You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above

CALL FOR PAPERS
Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and
protocols for current and future applications of WSAN.
TOPIC OF INTEREST
Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN and traditional wireless sensor networks, robot networks, as well as robotics and automation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
* Autonomous sensor networks
