===================================================================================
Distributed sensor systems have become a highly active research area due
to their
potential for providing diverse new capabilities applications. The focus
of the
IEEE DCOSS conference is on distributed computing issues in large scale
networked
sensor systems (including algorithms and applications, systems design
techniques
and tools, and in-network signal and information processing). The conference
normally features three tracks on Algorithms, Systems, and Signal
Processing. In
DCOSS 2014, the special track is 'Social Networks and Crowdsensing'. All
accepted
papers will be included in the symposium proceedings, which will be
published by
the IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services and submitted
to the IEEE
Xplore Digital Library. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished
manuscripts that demonstrate current research on computational aspects of
distributed sensor systems.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Social networks and crowdsensing
* Sensors for Smart Grid systems, green networks and sustainability
* Computation and programming models
* Energy models, minimization, awareness
* Distributed collaborative information processing
* Detection and tracking
* Theoretical performance analysis complexity, correctness, scalability
* Abstractions for modular design
* Fault tolerance and security
* Languages, operating systems
* Task allocation, reprogramming and reconfiguration
* Dynamic resource management
* Scalable, heterogeneous architectures (node and system-level)
* Middleware interfaces, communication and processing primitives
* Design, simulation and optimization tools for deployment and operation
* Design automation and application synthesis techniques
* Closed-loop control for sensing and actuation
* Case studies lessons from real world deployments
* Network coding and compression

A joint publication of IEEE Sensors Council, IEEE Communications
Society, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Signal Processing Society
# Scope of Special Issue #
Smart and connected health (SCH) is the multidisciplinary technology to
provide preventive or remote treatments by utilizing digital heath
information structure such as body sensor networks and smart techniques
such as from Data to Knowledge to Decisions. It will enable preventive
care, clinic-centric to patient-centered practice by applying diverse
Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in sensors, computing, networking
and communication, and can allow the individuals to participate in their
own care. Future SCH will be realized by providing rich medical
information to each individual through replacing infrequent,
clinic-based measurements with unobtrusive, continuous sensing,
monitoring and assessment.
The development of SCH will play a key role in the modern society to
meet the broad goals of medical applications. However, significant
challenges still remain in the area. For example, lack of medical
baseline data for each particular individual. The IoT technology such as
continuous sensing mobile communication can be employed to create
individualized baselines. The theme of the special issue (SI) is
especially focused on the two major aspects of IoT for SCH: (1)
monitoring and assisting individuals utilizing smart systems including
sensors, devices, and robotics, (2) an interoperable digital health
information infrastructure to increase medical/health information
availability and use. The outputs of SCH with IoT could significantly
improve a person's outcomes and quality of life. Findings from the SI
will provide support for enabling IoT to move the focus from disease to
health and wellbeing at the individual, system, and organizational level
in many SCH applications. We encourage submissions on theoretical,
practical, as well as experimental studies, from both academia and
industry, related to all aspects of IoT for SCH. Topics of interests
include (but are not limited to) the following categories:
* Digital Health Information Infrastructure for SCH
* Healthcare Applications of Body Area Networks
* Communication Protocols and Algorithms for SCH
* Medical Sensors, Devices and Robotics
* Privacy, Security and Trust of Medical Systems
* Computer-Aided Diagnosis
* Data To Knowledge To Decisions for SCH
* Data Visualization and Intelligent Integration for
Decision-Making
* Mobile Social Sensing for Wireless Health
* Bioimaging
* Integrated Systems for Telemedicine
* Clinical Practice and Technology Development
* Cloud-Assisted Medical Cyber-Physical Systems
* Body Area Networks for Sports Applications and Systems
* Mobile Computing for Smart Health and Well Being
* Nano-Scale Communications and Networking for SCH
* Smart Health and Big Data
* Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Robustness of Healthcare
Systems

The Second International Workshop on Vehicular Traffic Management for Smart
Cities (VTM 2014) (http://csserver.ucd.ie/~sdjahel/VTM2014/VTM.html)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be held in conjunction with The 2014 IEEE 79th Vehicular Technology
Conference (VTC2014-Spring), 18-21 May 2014, Seoul, Korea
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
The rapid growth of the number of cars on the roads has created a
plethora of
challenges for road traffic management authorities such as, traffic
congestion, increasing number of accidents, air pollution, etc. Over the
last
decade, researchers from both industry and academia have focused their
efforts
on exploiting advances in sensing and communication technologies to make
the
existing road Traffic Management Systems (TMSs) more efficient.
Their main goal is to improve the traveler’s safety, shorten the travel
time
and reduce the environmental impact.
Road traffic management for smart cities involves monitoring the actual
traffic situation in real-time (including volumes, speeds, incidents, etc.)
and then controlling or influencing the flow using that information in
order
to reduce traffic congestion, deal efficiently with incidents and provide
accurate and reliable traffic information and prediction to both drivers
and
authorities. Moreover, it is foreseen that future smart cities will provide
faster and secure emergency service delivery by granting proper traffic
privileges to emergency vehicles.
This workshop seeks to bring together researchers, scientists and engineers
from various research communities, as well as practitioners and
administrators
who face the challenges of traffic management in smart cities. They are all
welcome to present and discuss their latest research findings, ideas,
simulation tools and applications at the 2014 VTM workshop.

IoT-SoS 2014
3rd IEEE Workshop on the Internet of Things: Smart Objects and Services
(in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2014)
Sydney, Australia
16 June 2014
http://www.ieee-wowmom.org/iot-sos/2014

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm which is shaping the
evolution of the future Internet. According to the vision underlying the
IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after
connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate
objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities
and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous
network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which
can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks.
Thus, it allows for the development of new intelligent services
available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything.
When human interaction is absent from the system dynamics, the vision
is also referred to as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. Many
applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M
umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grids, surveillance,
home automation, intelligent transportation, and it is strongly expected
that new applications will emerge once the enabling technologies reach
a stable state.
At the moment, two of the most important challenges for the widespread
use of IoT/M2M technologies are:
1. Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient
interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the
(future) Internet.
2. The creation of value-added services, especially open and
interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines /
smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current
and new business and development processes.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for
discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory,
application, and implementation of the IoT/M2M concepts: Technologies,
protocols, algorithms, and services.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- System architectures for IoT/M2M systems
- Protocols and mechanisms for seamless IoT/M2M communications
- Enabling standards and technologies for the IoT/M2M
- Service platforms for IoT/M2M applications
- Business models and processes for IoT/M2M applications
- Energy optimization and sustainable operation of IoT/M2M devices
- Access network issues; including mobility management, data
dissemination and routing
- Modeling and simulation of large-scale IoT/M2M scenarios
- Experiences with experimental IoT/M2M system prototypes, pilots, and
testbeds
- Security and privacy in the IoT/M2M context
- Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research
- Novel and emerging IoT/M2M applications; including eHealth/mHealth,
Smart Grids, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Smart Homes and Cities

Betreff: MobiSys PhD Forum 2014 - Call for Submissions
Dear all,
Please encourage PhD students to submit to the MobiSys PhD forum 2014. The
submission deadline is approaching -- March 31. The plain text CFP is
listed below.
Apologies to those of you who have received this message multiple times.
Regards,
Aarathi Prasad
MobiSys PhD Forum Co-Chair
*Call for Submissions*
****************************************
*Overview*
The PhD Forum provides a friendly and supportive environment for doctoral
students to present and discuss their dissertation research both with their
peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from academia and
industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice, this forum will
provide an excellent opportunity for students to network as well as to
practice presenting their research clearly and concisely.
This meeting is best suited to students who are far enough into their PhD
to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key challenges they
plan to solve as well as the strategies and methodologies that are
applicable. Furthermore, participants should not plan to finish their
dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as that would leave little time
to include advice and suggestions into their work.
*Awards*
Best presentation will receive an award at the forum.
*Format*
The forum will be a one-day event consisting of short student
presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each participant
will have time allotted for a short presentation as well as an in-depth and
constructive discussion led by the panel. In order to allow adequate time
for each presentation, we will limit the number of participants to 10
presenters.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which panelists
will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions and advice to
the entire group.
*Submission*
Submissions should consist of the following:
An extended abstract of the student's dissertation research (up to 2 pages)
including a brief discussion of motivation, challenges, related work,
initial results, and references. Applicants should clearly identify their
contributions to the field of mobile systems. Also, it is recommended to
clearly delineate the student's prior work and cite them; this will help
the reviewers and the panel to make better judgment of technical
contributions and provide more useful suggestions.
A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants
affiliations and research activities. This should include the date that the
student expects to complete his/her dissertation.
The submission format should be used by the same format of MobiSys
conference. Please visit
here<http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2014/submission.php> for
detail. Submissions MUST be no more than two (2) pages. This length
includes everything: figures, tables, references, appendices and so forth.
Please register and submit your paper using the submission system.
There may be some travel grants from NSF and SIGMOBILE to attend PhD Forum.
Submissions will be handled via email: mobisys14.phd.forum(a)gmail.com
If accepted, a student may be asked to provide explanations or
clarification by the camera-ready deadline.
*Important Dates*
Submission deadline: : March 31, 2014 (11:59 PM PST)
Notification deadline: April 17, 2014
Camera-ready deadline: April 27, 2014
Forum Date: June 16, 2014

Computers & Electrical Engineering
*Special Issue on Green Engineering Towards Sustainable Smart Cities*
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computers-and-electrical-engineering/call-…
Since 2007, for the first time in human history, more people live in
cities
than in rural areas. By 2030, the world population is expected to be
nearly
60% urban, and by 2050, this proportion will increase to 70%, according to
the United Nations. With populations growing, cities need to face
increasing and critical problems of urban environments. From
transportation
to green/smart buildings, urban agriculture, environmental monitoring,
energy storage and public safety/security, all of these new applications
rely on the deployment of smart object networks offering a high degree of
scalability, reliability, and security. This is why we believe that
current
and probable future green engineering challenges in building smarter
cities
must employ the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm to enable the creation
of
urban and sustainable cyber-physical systems.
*Scope*
The scope of this special issue is to explore state-of-the-art research
covering a variety of concepts on green engineering in building smart
cities in an efficient and sustainable way. Original, unpublished
manuscripts in any aspects of Green Engineering and Smart Green Cities
(SGC) are welcomed for this special issue. The topics of interest include,
but are not limited, to:
- Cyber-physical systems for SGC
- IP smart objects, green clouds and Sensing as a Service (SaaS) for SGC
- IoT architectures and platforms for SGC
- IoT privacy, security and trust management in smart green environments
- Sensor applications for a SGC (e.g. smart parking, structural health
monitoring, traffic congestion, smart street lighting)
- Content-Centric Networking in SGC
- Electric vehicles, smart grids and microgrids
- Energy-aware and green ICT infrastructures for SGC
- Energy harvesting, energy saving and carbon footprint reduction
- Case studies and innovative applications for SGC
- Prototypes, experimental testbeds and simulation environments
*Submission details*
High quality contributions not yet published and not currently under
review
by other journals or peer-reviewed events are sought. Manuscripts should
be
submitted to the Elsevier Editorial System
(http://ees.elsevier.com/compeleceng/). A guide for authors in preparing
their papers is available at
http://www.elsevier.com/journals/computers-and-electrical-engineering/0045-….
To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for this special
issue, it is important that authors select *SI-green* as the "Article
Type"
during the submission process.
*Important dates*
Manuscript due date: August 15, 2014
First decision notification: November 15, 2014
Revised manuscript due date: December 15, 2014
Final decision notification: January 15, 2015
Final paper due: February 15, 2015
Tentative publication: July 2015
