The key themes of this workshop are two-fold: Connected Vehicles: Based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular networks, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular applications that improve road safety, energy efficiency, optimizes traffic flow, as well as for infotainment purposes. Intelligent Vehicles: As vehicles are equipped with more sensing and computing capabilities, vehicles become more intelligent and are able to accomplish a number of challenging tasks including autonomous driving. We are currently witnessing the pursuit of high-performing, reliable, scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as associated mobility services. These ongoing innovations present an extraordinary challenge for the research community. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. CarSys 2017 brings together researchers from these initiatives around the world to chart the way forward in this rapidly evolving field. Papers must be in PDF format, no longer than 8 pages (double-column), use the ACM SIG Proceedings Templates (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates <http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates>) and fit properly on US Letter-sized paper (8.5 inch x 11 inch) with reasonable margins. The THEME -------------- Ever-growing volume of data and information is being captured from systems, machines and devices and made available to IT systems. The information is processed on-the-fly enabling IT-based management systems to make decisions for real-time control of the manufacturing process. This data capturing and collection for IT systems is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). When adopted to the industrial automation systems where robustness, reliability, security and latency and jitters are highly desired performance requirements, it is often called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Industrial communication systems today primarily consist of legacy systems such as HART, Foundation FIELDBUS, CAN and Profibus - well-working and established industry-specific networks installed in millions of systems. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. The IoT paradigm now covers several technologies beyond RFID and WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) and the application field expansion has exceeded expectations. According to Cisco IBSG (Internet Business Solution Group), more than 50 billion devices are expected to be connected to the internet by 2020 and 20 % of which are from the industry sector. Therefore, integrating the IoT concept and Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) is an attractive choice for industrial process and is mainly needed to reap the full benefits of the IoT . Indeed, IWSNs are an emerging class of WSNs that face specific constraints linked to the particularities of the industrial production. IWSNs bring several advantages and have become inseparable from the manufacturing process due to their low-cost, reliability and robustness in harsh environments, energy efficiency and mobility. IWSNs involve large amount of wireless devices such as sensors for failure monitoring and detection and RFID tags for machine identification. Combining IWSN with IoT may optimize the operational efficiency, automation, maintenance and rationalization. Moreover, it ensures large scale interconnection between machines, computers and people enabling intelligent industrial operations. However, IWSN and IoT integration will need to solve a more complex challenge of combining reliable communications and low- cost computing together. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to address together innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced industrial wireless sensor networks and intelligent IoT. The FT is seeking latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to industrial networks’ smart integration with IoT. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the eleven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of position and industry papers as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs), opportunistic communication and computing - Architecture, design, and implementation of communication systems for challenged networks - Modeling, analysis, and characterization of challenged networks and protocols - Challenged networking techniques for mobile cloud computing - Mobile data offloading via challenged networks - Challenged networking techniques for participatory and opportunistic sensing - Challenged networking in the Internet of Things - Challenged networking in Cyber-Physical Systems - Big data analytics in challenged networking - Software-defined networking in challenged environments - Security/trust/privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks - Energy-efficient communication in challenged networks - Information centric and content-centric networking in challenged networks - Real-world mobility trace collection, analysis, and modeling for challenged environments - Network science methods for challenged networks - Network coding in challenged networks - Novel challenged networking systems (e.g., networks of micro aerial vehicles or underwater systems) - Real deployment and case studies in various stages of use - Disrupted scenarios for challenged networks (e.g., disaster relief and emergency management) - Daily use applications (e.g., mobile social networking, crowdsourcing, censorship evasion, sensor networks, smart cities) - Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems - Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ________________________________________ Demo and poster proposals (to be published as part of the proceedings) must not be longer than 2 pages, for demos plus 1 page description of the precise setup and requirements (the 1-page setup description will not be published in the proceedings). Position and industry papers must not be longer than 4 pages. Reviews will be single-blinded. Papers should neither have been published elsewhere nor being currently under review by another conference or journal. We welcome submissions in broadly defined areas of interests (but not limited to): systems of smart sensors and actuators, brand-new applications of sensory devices, smart things, and smart infrastructure, and the underlying research challenges in communication, networking, energy and resources, data management, algorithms and machine intelligence, hardware designs, and deployment on real environments. Student participants will greatly benefit from the Posters and Demos session; it will be a lively forum to present their work and receive early feedback from international leading experts attending the conference. We explicitly encourage submissions of revolutionary concepts, path breaking ideas, and ongoing research prototypes. Major IT industry as well as emerging technology startups are also highly encouraged to participate. In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. This enables warnings and precautions from a network of roadside units, functioning as stationary waypoints and relay warnings, precautions and information regarding availability of crucial services. Such information is particularly beneficial to users in remote areas where it cannot be obtained reliably through conventional communication channels. This Special Issue is focused on sensors and sensor systems for connected vehicles with emphasis on the whole range between modelling and applications. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. Unique to this workshop, we will ask for submissions reporting the *failure* of actual embedded sensing system deployments complete with data where possible that can shed insight as to how the problems affected such sensor based systems and their goals. We want the failures, problems and glitches that wasted hours of researcher time; head scratching whilst trying to diagnose and fix subtle or unexpected bugs etc. This workshop focuses on the point at which the simulations and tests done in the lab are taken out into the field, and the previous assumptions fail. The overarching aim is to establish a process that encourages the refinement and development of a new science of sensor systems to enable reliable, maintainable deployments that last the life-times expected of them. The topic is important as the scientific problems that we face with IoT systems strike hard against the limits of our knowledge about how to organise, analyse, and adapt large, loosely-coupled, intercommunicating, and increasingly autonomous, distributed systems. This topic is timely because there is mounting pressure from various industries and government bodies to be able to place their trust in sensing based infrastructures for decision-making. This contention is supported by industry research showing the potential growth of the IoT sector. In this workshop we wish to: Share experiences of real IoT developments “in the wild”. Understand the differences between the theoretical performance of results and real +experiences. Map failure to causes and to explore the more and less obvious causalities. Produce a list of research findings and areas to prioritise for further investigation. The workshop scope includes: Real WSN/IOT etc. deployments that either experienced some, or ended in, failure, complete with data to show what failed and a detailed analysis of the causes of the failure and the lessons learned. Examples of a WSN or other sensor deployments that where either hacked or attacked in a nefarious way, with as much data and details as can be provided. Any practices or tools, along with methodology and description,that have evolved out of sensor system deployment failures that are used to prevent further problems and that can be shown to improve the success rate of Sensor System deployments. Privacy Issues: The organisers of FAILSAFE recognise that some information from deployments may have a sensitive nature or be under a non-disclosure agreement. In these cases, it is acceptable to anonymise any information as long as it does not inhibit the point or issues being presented in the work. Short papers are the preferred vehicle for contributions whose novelty and impact show the same technical excellence, and whose description fits within 6 pages (with 1 additional page for references). In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. This enables warnings and precautions from a network of roadside units, functioning as stationary waypoints and relay warnings, precautions and information regarding availability of crucial services. Such information is particularly beneficial to users in remote areas where it cannot be obtained reliably through conventional communication channels. This Special Issue is focused on sensors and sensor systems for connected vehicles with emphasis on the whole range between modelling and applications.
