As the applications for connected vehicles so does the demand for reliable networking. Large-scale testbeds are running or planned in different parts of the world, while multiple discussions are taking place at different levels and in different forums about the next generation of vehicular networks. The automated (and connected) vehicle will soon come into play and may significantly change the roots of vehicular networks. Yet, several studies have shown that smart devices are frequently co-located in proximity to at least one other device throughout the day, suggesting that devices can potentially collaborate to reduce the effort of resource intensive tasks, e.g., sensing, offloading, networking, storage, etc. However, merging the resources of multiple devices to work together is a tough challenge as it requires a common understanding of the context of each device. In addition, since smart devices function in multiple roles, understanding what really constitutes context becomes difficult as different types of contexts need to be modeled depending on the type of task. Context information is critical in multi device setups, e.g., for the formation of collaboration groups, and for negotiating responsibilities between the devices. Any misunderstandings in context can thus be extremely counterproductive for the collaboration between devices. Consider, for example, a computational task, e.g., game puzzle, whose execution can be accelerated by dividing computations between two or more devices. To distribute the task, we first need to understand the processing capacity of each device to ensure devices with insufficient resources are not harnessed for this task as they would turn into bottleneck for execution. By detecting the context for harnessing collaborative and opportunistic resources in proximity, it is possible to reduce the cost of executing tasks in the constrained resources of smart devices, and to diffuse the presence of smart devices beyond their existing computing isolated behavior. The goal of PerCrowd 2018 is to explore the impact of context in collaborative and opportunistic computing. More in detail, the goal of this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on multi-device settings, whose computational behavior can be propagated within a community of devices for optimizing their energy and performance. Original papers addressing theoretical, practical, and technical aspects of opportunistic and collaborative self-organization of devices are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of informative surveys of the state of the art as well as position papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Specifically, sensor networks are deployed to capture various data in IIoT. Meanwhile, cloud computing platforms are developed to store and process data powerfully in IIoT. Moreover, big data analytics tools are utilized to glean valuable findings from the massive data in IIoT. However, to integrate sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT in a robust way, there are a lot of tough issues to be solved with respect to various aspects (e.g., framework, power efficiency, security, quality of service, etc.). Therefore, this Special Section in IEEE Access aims to solicit original technical papers with novel contributions on the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT. Review or survey type articles will also be considered. Submissions should focus on the convergence (i.e., the contemporaneous utilization of at least two of the three technologies – sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT). Submissions that work on the experimental implementation of the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT are especially welcome. Extensive previous effort has been devoted to exploring coverage theory, which ranges from point coverage, barrier coverage to area coverage in line with the dimension of concerned targets. Though these theoretical investigations provide insightful understanding about coverage, there are quite limited previous studies reporting coverage application in practical scenarios. How much can we gain by applying theoretical coverage results from the practical point of view? Further, some recent results are provided about coverage problem in other research fields, such as cellular network and social networks. Is it possible to provide a general theoretical framework for network coverage given the understanding gained from sensor networks? The answers to these two fundamental questions would extend the boundaries of traditional sensor coverage and push the coverage research from theory to practice. The objective of this call is to bring latest thoughts and applications in generic network coverage, that help put together a clear map for this important area. In a WSN, a large number of sensor nodes are deployed and networked to monitor or survey targeted area, such that the interested data can be sensed, processed, stored and collected. Through WSNs, we are able to bridge the physical word and the cyber space, which composes the foundation for developing new smart applications. Many potential applications of WSNs have been exploited in the fields of environmental engineering, healthcare, industry, military applications, smart home, and green buildings etc. To enable the pervasive deployment of WSNs, the biggest stumbling block is the contradiction between the various functionalities demanded by applications and the limited energy supply for sensor nodes. Such a situation is getting worse, especially considering the increasing network scale. Therefore, in this special issue, we look at WSNs, mainly from the perspective of green computing. On one hand, we expect to design energy-saving (or –free) protocols cross different system layers, to prolong the network lifetime as far as possible. Specifically, to practice WSNs in real applications, we are supposed to achieve a tradeoff between system performance and energy efficiency, through adapting sensing/networking functionalities to energy budget. On the other hand, we can resort to seeking new techniques to sustainably supply energy to sensor nodes. For example, sensor nodes equipped with certain mechanisms can harvest energy from surrounding circumstance, or we can rely on dedicated devices to periodically charge the sensor nodes (if they are re-chargeable). The above threads (or the joint optimizations cross them) are of great significance to improve the sustainability and performance of WSNs. Therefore, it is highly worthy to extensively investigate how we run a WSN in a green fashion. First, solutions that leverage the widespread availability of handheld devices (smartphone, tablets) that act as the prime contact point to alert the population of impending dangers and as a locating device for rescue teams. Secondly, data analysis techniques that take into account the pervasive role of social networks in collecting and spreading information and provide accurate checking using appropriate tools. And, finally, emerging networking paradigms that go beyond the traditional infrastructure-based model, rather leveraging disruption-tolerant models and device-to-device communication, such as Wi-Fi direct and LTE-D2D. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for emergency and disaster relief. We also invite authors to submit papers presenting extensive experiences with implementation, deployment, and operation. Pervasive computing and communications have evolved into highly active areas of research; they have found their way into many current commercial systems due to the tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies and topics including wireless networking, mobile and distributed computing, sensor systems, ambient intelligence, and smart devices. PerCom 2018 will be held in Athens, the capital city of Greece and one of the most historic cities in Europe. PerCom 2018 will provide a leading edge scholarly forum for researchers, engineers, and students alike to share their state-of-the art research and developmental work in the broad areas of pervasive computing and communications. The aim of IoT architectures for provisioning of PNLBS is to design an accurate, low-cost, low-power, reliable, and scalable solution for cutting-edge applications. To achieve this goal, several challenges should be addressed, such as improving positioning accuracy, reducing the power cost, handling to track millions of devices as well as transmitting and processing big data. Therefore, the research is required to conduct on not only PNLBS algorithms, but also new IoT architectures and chip design technologies. Extensive research efforts have been paid either on PNLBS algorithms, or IoT architectures and chip design. However, research efforts on their combination remain open and require further investigations, such as how to accurately track millions of devices by consuming low power, how to use IoT technique (e.g., crowdsourcing) to automatically generate wireless fingerprinting database for positioning, how to design low-power positioning chip/system suitable for IoT architectures, etc. The goal of this Special Issue is to solicit the latest unpublished work on PNLBS for IoT. Connected vehicles have been envisioned to provide enabling key technologies to enhance transportation efficiency, reducing incidents, improving safety, and mitigating the impacts of traffic congestion. The potential of connected vehicles has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs around the globe. In particular, radio spectrum has been allocated in North America, Europe, and Japan for the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) to facilitate intelligent transportation. The United States Department of Transportation has been taking steps to mandate car makers to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technologies for light vehicles for a safer driving experience. Recently, we have also witnessed 5G connected vehicular successful test-bed in South Korea. To be precise, we are on the verge of deploying the 1st generation of wirelessly connected vehicles. The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging technologies for connecting vehicles, the latest development in standardization and regulation, as well as the potential services and applications for connecting vehicles. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under consideration by any other journals. Crowdsensing/crowdsourcing is a novel data collection paradigm that leverages this vast mobile sensor network, making it possible to expand the scope of research endeavors and address civic issues without requiring the purchase of specialized sensors or the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure. Data collected using such applications may come from unexpected yet interesting and valuable sources and may allow for collecting data in previously inaccessible locations and contexts. This new data collection paradigm introduces several research challenges. Privacy is a primary concern for users who contribute sensitive or personally identifiable information (PII). Incentive mechanisms for participation may be needed to encourage people to volunteer their resources to collect data. Methods are needed for processing large-scale, user-generated data sets into meaningful information, and for assessing and understanding the quality of information to help guide decision-making. Approaches which involve the crowd in such data analysis tasks, with humans serving as a source of semantic information, interpretation, and evaluation of crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data, can also help to build an understanding of the physical, computational, and socio-technical environment. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion, debate, and collaboration focused on ideas, trends, techniques, and recent advances in crowdsensing and crowdsourcing. We invite original research contributions that advance the state of the art as well as position papers that pose a new direction or present a controversial point of view. The key themes of this workshop are two-fold: Connected Vehicles: Based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular networks, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular applications that improve road safety, energy efficiency, optimizes traffic flow, as well as for infotainment purposes. Intelligent Vehicles: As vehicles are equipped with more sensing and computing capabilities, vehicles become more intelligent and are able to accomplish a number of challenging tasks including autonomous driving. We are currently witnessing the pursuit of high-performing, reliable, scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as associated mobility services. These ongoing innovations present an extraordinary challenge for the research community. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. CarSys 2017 brings together researchers from these initiatives around the world to chart the way forward in this rapidly evolving field. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: Automated/semi-automated vehicles Vehicular active safety system Information and sensor fusion Vehicle perception Cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems Telematics and vehicle-cloud integration Vehicular IoT infrastructure V2I / V2V Communication Novel technologies for V2X (e.g., LTE-D, VLC, mmWave, TVWS) Wireless in-car networks Vehicle communication protocol design and network management Vehicle to vulnerable road users (VRU, e.g., bicyclists, pedestrians) communications Vehicle system architecture and design Intelligent vehicle software and computing infrastructure Safety and non-safety applications or service Applications to improve vehicle driver’s experience, performance, and behavior Security, privacy issues and protection mechanisms Field operational testing *Submission Instructions * All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Papers must be in PDF format, no longer than 8 pages (double-column), use the ACM SIG Proceedings Templates (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates <http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates>) and fit properly on US Letter-sized paper (8.5 inch x 11 inch) with reasonable margins. We also strongly encourage the submission of position papers or practice papers with a maximum length of 5 pages (following the ACM Proceedings Templates above).
