Manufacturers plan to introduce new cars into the market with V2V and V2I communication systems as soon as 2019 (estimated). Large-scale testbeds are running or planned in different parts of the world, such as the Cooperative ITS Corridor that connects Austria, Germany and Netherlands, and the USDOT plan to install V2V technology in 10,000 city-owned vehicles in New York City. On the other hand, the technology will continue to evolve. In parallel to the deployment phase, multiple discussions are taking place at different levels and in different forums about the next generation of vehicular networks. The 3GPPP has launched a Work Item to study the feasibility of LTE-based V2X services and connected vehicles are being considered a relevant part of the future 5G ecosystem. The automated (and connected) vehicle will soon come into play and may significantly change the roots of vehicular networks. The 2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) seeks to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to present and discuss recent developments and challenges in vehicular networking technologies, and their applications. In addition to the standard full and short paper tracks, IEEE VNC 2016 will continue the tradition from previous editions to include a poster and demo session to allow the authors to closely interact with and obtain feedback from the conference audience on new or ongoing research contributions related to vehicular communications and networking. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully validated through complete extensive evaluation. IEEE VNC 2016 will also include a demonstration session for researchers to showcase their latest prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. The demo session will be co-located with the poster session to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction with the conference audience. We solicit proposals for demonstrations from industry and academia related to vehicular networking. Submissions should showcase innovative systems and prototypes developed for either commercial use or for research purposes. We especially encourage demos on validating important research issues or showcasing prototypes that demonstrate realistic applications. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * 5G technologies for connected vehicles * Communications and networking for automated and semi-automated vehicles * Congestion and awareness control in vehicular networks * Novel technologies for V2X (TVWS, LTE-D, VLC, etc.) * Safety and non-safety applications of vehicular networks, including ITS * V2V, V2I and V2X communications and networking protocols * Vehicular communications with VRUs (Vulnerable Road Users) e.g., with bicyclists, pedestrians, etc. * In-vehicle communications (wireless or wired) * Radio propagation and technologies for vehicular networks (propagation models, antennas, etc.) * Protocols for vehicular networking (radio resource management, link layer, routing, mobility management, dissemination, transport etc.) * Security, privacy, liability, and dependability in vehicular networks * Network and QoS management for vehicular networks * Simulation and performance evaluation techniques for vehicular networks * Results from experimental systems, testbeds, and pilot studies * Impact assessments of vehicular networks on safety, transportation efficiency, and the environment * Communications related to electric and hybrid vehicles * Heterogeneous networking approaches (multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-application, multi-technology) * Integration of V2V with on-board systems and networks * Vehicular networking architectures and system design * Applications and services to enhance driver experience, performance, and behavior All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings and will be submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Manuscript submissions All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in standard IEEE 2-column format. The mandatory IEEE template in Microsoft Word and LaTeX format can be found at the IEEE templates page. Only Adobe PDF files will be accepted for the review process. All submissions must be made electronically through EDAS. We will consider two different categories of papers: * Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to eight (8) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding 8 pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all. * Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and there will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference. Please note that the full paper and short paper categories target different kinds of contributions. Papers submitted to a category will NOT be moved to a different category: a paper will either be accepted for the category where it has been submitted, or it will be rejected. Full papers will not be “downgraded” to short papers. Therefore, please be sure to carefully assess for yourself prior to submission which is the most suitable submission category for your paper, and to make sure that the presentation in the manuscript is well suited to the aims of this category. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully validated through complete extensive evaluation. The videos of accepted demonstration proposals will be advertised on the conference website. Poster/demo papers should be 2-page papers following standard IEEE 2-column format using 10-point font. All paper submissions must be written in English. The title of the paper should begin with either "Poster:" or "Demo:". GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch "Drahtlose Sensornetze" - FGSN 2016 Drahtlose Sensornetze stellen eine viel versprechende Technologie zur Beobachtung und Beeinflussung von Vorgängen in der realen Welt dar. Autonome Sensorknoten nehmen dabei Parameter der Umwelt durch Sensoren wahr und können diese durch Aktoren beeinflussen. Eine Vielzahl solcher autonomer und ressourcenbeschränkter Knoten kooperiert dabei mittels drahtloser Kommunikation. Die Eigenschaften dieser Knoten und Netze implizieren eine Vielzahl von neuartigen Herausforderungen, die sich in einer regen Forschungsaktivität widerspiegeln. Ziel dieser Reihe von Fachgesprächen ist es, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus Wissenschaft, Forschung und Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem informellen Gedankenaustausch zu geben und die Kooperation in diesem multidisziplinären Forschungsbereich zu verstärken. IFIP WONS 2017 - Call For Papers The 13th Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services 21-24 February 2017 Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA http://2017.wons-conference.org/ Keynote Speakers: Nick Bambos (Stanford) Jean Walrand (Berkeley) Wireless on-demand network systems and services have become pivotal in shaping our future networked world. Starting as a niche application over Wi-Fi, they can now be found in mainstream technologies like Bluetooth LE, LTE Direct and Wireless LANs, and have become the cornerstone of upcoming networking paradigms including mesh and sensor networks, the Internet of Things, cloud networks, vehicular networks, disruption tolerant and opportunistic networks, underwater and intra-body networks. The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. Examples include how to make smart use of these novel technologies when multiple technologies or a mix of permanent services and on-demand networking opportunities are available to a network node, how to provide robust services in highly dynamic environments, how to efficiently employ and operate heavily resource-constrained devices, and how to develop robust and lightweight algorithms for self-organization and adaptation. Finally, there are many application-specific challenges. WONS, now in its thirteenth edition, is a high quality forum to address these challenges. WONS aims to provide a global platform for rich interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative contributions in a stimulating environment. In this view, consumer centric solutions, platforms, data management, and business models have to be developed and consolidated in order to deploy effective solutions in the specific fields. The availability of low cost general purpose processing and storage systems with sensing/actuation capabilities (now available also to prosumers) coupled with communication capabilities are broadening the possibilities of IoT leading to open systems that will be highly programmable, virtualized and will support large numbers of APIs. Internet of Things emerges as a set of integrated technologies new exciting solutions and services that are set to change the way people live, produce goods. Internet of Things is rewarded by many as a fruitful technological sector in order to generate revenues. IoT covers a large wealth of consumer centric technologies (from sensors to communications up to software platforms) and it is applicable to an even larger set of application domains (from manufacturing to e-health, from logistics to automotive). Innovation will be nurtured and driven by the possibilities offered by the combination of increased technological capabilities, new business models and the rise of new ecosystems. IoT will be characterized by a few enablers: * Sensors, actuators and new consumer devices. * New Communication capabilities (from short range to LPWAN to 4G and 5G networks, with NB-IoT). In addition, new communication protocols and the exploitation of NFV/SDN for better communications. * Data management and Big Data analysis to deal with large data sets and streams generated by IoT systems. * New solutions for large distributed systems (e.g., combination of Cloud, Grid and Edge/Fog Computing). * Cognitive systems. Large IoT systems will be more and more complex, and as such they will require new cognitive techniques in order to be effective. * Platform programmability. APIs and other means for supporting the programmability of IoT systems in order to enable the exploitation of programmable features made available. * New Business models and ecosystems. What is the value of IoT systems, what ecosystems support it, how to monetize IoT. * Consumer centric aspects including IoT application development, utilization of semantics and security, privacy, trust. This proposed Feature Topic (FT) issue will gather articles from a wide range of perspectives in different industrial and research communities of IoT. The primary FT goals are to advance the understanding of the challenges faced in IoT communications, networking, distributed processing, new signal processing capabilities, software platforms and end – users devices over the next decade, and provide further awareness in the IoT research communities on these challenges, thus fostering future investigation. In addition a perspective on the business possibilities of IoT are of interest in order to enable and deploy the foreseen technical solutions. The key themes of this workshop are two-fold: 1. Connected Vehicles: Based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular networks, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular safety applications, efficiency applications and a multitude of other commercial or public authority applications. 2. Intelligent Vehicles: As vehicles are equipped with more sensing and computing capabilities, vehicles become more intelligent and are able to accomplish a number of challenging tasks including autonomous driving. We are currently witnessing the pursuit of high-performing, reliable, scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as associated mobility services. These ongoing innovations present an extraordinary challenge for the research community. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. CarSys 2016 brings together researchers from these initiatives around the world to chart the way forward in this rapidly evolving field. Environmental energy, from sources such as solar, wind, radio frequency, and temperature gradient can be harvested and stored for sustainable operation, thereby enabling battery-free nodes. Such nodes can be applicable in scenarios where small device volume and perpetual operation are desirable. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE’s D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the ten previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in the **new directions of challenged networking such as mobile cloud/mobile edge computing, IoT, mobile data offloading, and challenged SDN**. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. CPS is expected to play a major role in the development of next-generation smart energy systems, especially for the large scale power systems. Due to the deeply complex intertwining among different components, CPS poses fundamental challenges in multiple aspects, such as real-time data processing, distributed computing, data sensing and collection, and efficient parallel computing. Innovative technologies addressing CPS challenges in smart energy systems, such as the fast growth in system scale and complexity, the distributed control and real-time interaction between dynamic environments and physical systems, and the efficiency issues in smart homes, buildings, communities and connected vehicle systems together with their reliability, are highly desirable. In particular, studying the merging and communication between information-centric and node-centric systems from a CPS perspective is extremely promising. It is anticipated that the IoE will provide connectivity for billions of devices and millions of individuals worldwide. However, such an interconnection will only be possible if a reliable and high-speed wireless communication infrastructure is built to sustain the massive and heterogeneous traffic that will stem from the IoE. Such an infrastructure will encompass a variety of wireless systems, ranging from cellular networks to WLANs. Owing to its pervasiveness, scale, and heterogeneity, the IoE will introduce many novel and unique challenges for wireless communications that range from enabling a co-existence between machine type devices and human type devices to delivering ultra-low latency communication and developing resource allocation mechanisms that can adapt to the heterogeneous IoE environment. Moreover, the IoE will also incorporate emerging technologies such as drone-based and UAV communications which will have their own, unique challenges. This workshop aims to attract high quality contributions in the general area of IoE. The goal is to provide attendees a comprehensive view of the latest developments in this area. In this view, consumer centric solutions, platforms, data management, and business models have to be developed and consolidated in order to deploy effective solutions in the specific fields. The availability of low cost general purpose processing and storage systems with sensing/actuation capabilities (now available also to prosumers) coupled with communication capabilities are broadening the possibilities of IoT leading to open systems that will be highly programmable, virtualized and will support large numbers of APIs. Internet of Things emerges as a set of integrated technologies new exciting solutions and services that are set to change the way people live, produce goods. Internet of Things is rewarded by many as a fruitful technological sector in order to generate revenues. IoT covers a large wealth of consumer centric technologies (from sensors to communications up to software platforms) and it is applicable to an even larger set of application domains (from manufacturing to e-health, from logistics to automotive). Innovation will be nurtured and driven by the possibilities offered by the combination of increased technological capabilities, new business models and the rise of new ecosystems. IoT will be characterized by a few enablers: * Sensors, actuators and new consumer devices. * New Communication capabilities (from short range to LPWAN to 4G and 5G networks, with NB-IoT). In addition, new communication protocols and the exploitation of NFV/SDN for better communications. * Data management and Big Data analysis to deal with large data sets and streams generated by IoT systems. * New solutions for large distributed systems (e.g., combination of Cloud, Grid and Edge/Fog Computing). * Cognitive systems. Large IoT systems will be more and more complex, and as such they will require new cognitive techniques in order to be effective. * Platform programmability. APIs and other means for supporting the programmability of IoT systems in order to enable the exploitation of programmable features made available. * New Business models and ecosystems. What is the value of IoT systems, what ecosystems support it, how to monetize IoT. * Consumer centric aspects including IoT application development, utilization of semantics and security, privacy, trust. This proposed Feature Topic (FT) issue will gather articles from a wide range of perspectives in different industrial and research communities of IoT. The primary FT goals are to advance the understanding of the challenges faced in IoT communications, networking, distributed processing, new signal processing capabilities, software platforms and end – users devices over the next decade, and provide further awareness in the IoT research communities on these challenges, thus fostering future investigation. Information fusion helps in combining the information into a new set of information while minimizing uncertainty. Researchers are leveraging information fusion techniques to minimize the uncertainty of the data for enabling the smart objects of IoT to make the reliable decisions. The exploitation of information fusion techniques in IoT will open new dimensions for designing the reliable and autonomous systems that can operate without the need for human interactions. Environmental energy, from sources such as solar, wind, radio frequency, and temperature gradient can be harvested and stored for sustainable operation, thereby enabling battery-free nodes. Such nodes can be applicable in scenarios where small device volume and perpetual operation are desirable. Moreover, they have the potential to enable autonomous sensing and communications tasks without human intervention following the deployment. However, challenges are posed by the need to coordinate the sensing and communications among battery-free nodes while guaranteeing the system performance. Since the harvesting of energy is typically hard to predict, some preliminary works designed efficient energy management schemes. Yet, designing new architectures that enable autonomous battery-free sensing and communications is an open problem. The objective of this special issue is to capture the state-of-the-art advances in this area, and foster new avenues for research. Technically, the IoT is an emerging paradigm that seamlessly integrates through a large amount of smart objects interlinking the physical and the cyber worlds and keeping them in a tight and continuous interaction. As such, while the envisioned paradigm will need to address significant complexity, the IoT is an exciting, broad, and nascent area spanning a multitude of scientific research communities as well as several areas of applied industrial research and development. With the introduction of this exciting new paradigm, a variety of new problems and challenges present themselves. Traditional Internet approaches are insufficient to solve these unprecedented issues. This special issue focuses on the technical issues we face when designing, engineering, deploying, and maintaining the IoT. We seek high-quality and unpublished papers that push research in all the facets of the IoT. Contributions may present and solve open technical problems, integrate novel solutions efficiently, and focus on the performance evaluation and comparison with existing standards. Both theoretical and experimental studies are welcome. A submission must not exceed 16 pages, including the cover page, figures, tables and references. The cover page should include the title of the paper, the authors’ names, affiliations and e-mails, an abstract, information about the contact author, and a list of keywords. Additional details may be included in a clearly marked appendix or as supplementary material which will be read at the discretion of the reviewers. Submissions are expected to be intelligible and complete without such additional details. A submission must report on original research that has not previously appeared in a journal or conference with published proceedings. It should not be concurrently submitted to such a journal or conference. Any overlap with a published or concurrently submitted paper must be clearly indicated. The Program Chairs reserve the right to reject submissions that are out of scope, or of clearly inferior quality, or that violate the submission guidelines. Each of the remaining papers will undergo a thorough reviewing process. Publication OPODIS has post-proceedings published by Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs) in gold open access mode. The camera-ready version of a paper must have the same format and be of the same length as its submitted version. All accepted papers will be evaluated for the best paper award.
