NetSys conference proceedings will be published in IEEE Xplore®. NetSys is a biennial event that originates from the key scientific conference on networked systems in German-speaking countries KiVS (Kommunikation in Verteilten Systemen) – which was initiated 37 years ago and has international orientation since 2013. NetSys is organized by the special interest group “Communication and Distributed Systems” (KUVS), which is anchored both in the German Computer Science society (Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI)) and in the Information Technology society (Informationstechnische Gesellschaft im VDE (ITG)). It is technically co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society and in cooperation with ACM SIGCOMM. Analysis of the data may be used to provide context-based services (e.g., presence detection), but also serves as the foundation for novel services (e.g. automated recommendations for energy savings). To date, the potential of this domain has barely been explored, although more and more energy data is becoming available due to the increasing number of deployed smart metering equipment. At the moment, one of the most important research challenges in smart energy systems is thus the creation of value-added services that exploit the information content in energy generation and consumption data such that they can inspire new functionalities and context models. The aim of the Third IEEE Workshop on Pervasive Energy Services (PerEnergy 2017) is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations of recent advances in the numerous opportunities opened up by the use of energy data in context-aware systems. It furthermore serves as a forum for the smart energy research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and future development of smart energy management systems. Contestants must first submit an abstract describing their approach in detail by the contest registration deadline. Solutions will be evaluated based on the reliability of transmissions, the end-to-end latency, and the energy-efficiency. A complete description of this year's evaluation scenario will be published on September 15, 2016. CATEGORIES AND PRIZE: Depending on the nature and number of submissions, multiple categories may be defined and cash awards will be given to the winners in each category. Manufacturers plan to introduce new cars into the market with V2V and V2I communication systems as soon as 2019 (estimated). Large-scale testbeds are running or planned in different parts of the world, such as the Cooperative ITS Corridor that connects Austria, Germany and Netherlands, and the USDOT plan to install V2V technology in 10,000 city-owned vehicles in New York City. On the other hand, the technology will continue to evolve. In parallel to the deployment phase, multiple discussions are taking place at different levels and in different forums about the next generation of vehicular networks. The 3GPPP has launched a Work Item to study the feasibility of LTE-based V2X services and connected vehicles are being considered a relevant part of the future 5G ecosystem. The automated (and connected) vehicle will soon come into play and may significantly change the roots of vehicular networks. The 2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) seeks to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to present and discuss recent developments and challenges in vehicular networking technologies, and their applications. In addition to the standard full and short paper tracks, IEEE VNC 2016 will continue the tradition from previous editions to include a poster and demo session to allow the authors to closely interact with and obtain feedback from the conference audience on new or ongoing research contributions related to vehicular communications and networking. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully validated through complete extensive evaluation. IEEE VNC 2016 will also include a demonstration session for researchers to showcase their latest prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. The demo session will be co-located with the poster session to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction with the conference audience. We solicit proposals for demonstrations from industry and academia related to vehicular networking. Submissions should showcase innovative systems and prototypes developed for either commercial use or for research purposes. We will consider two different categories of papers: * Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to eight (8) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding 8 pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all. * Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and there will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference. From the perspective of power sector, V2G networks necessitate a careful management of the energy flow for charging/discharging a tremendous number of EVs, with the objectives of guaranteeing grid stability, improving energy utilization, and reaping potential arbitrage value. Meanwhile, as indispensable bridges for managing the EVs connected to the power grid and the associated energy flows in V2G networks, designs of efficient communication networks for facilitating V2G/V2V communications are indispensable. Such designs not only cover a wide range of important directions such as network infrastructures, cross layer communication protocols, signaling systems, quality of service! , and resource managements, but also need the integration of the emerging ICT technologies such as M2M (or D2D) communications, IoT networks, software defined networks. Moreover, driven by the growing security issues in cyber spaces, securing the operations and communications of V2G networks and protecting the privacy of EV owners will be of practical and timely importance. The challenge of interacting with automated (and connected) vehicles is also creating opportunities for the further development of mobile and wearable technologies. To complete registration, developers must provide a list of team members and a brief description of the App. * To be considered as a finalist, developers must submit the following materials by October 30, 2016: * Two-page paper * The proposal must be in PDF format, no longer than two pages in IEEE conference paper format (see the submission guidelines page on the VNC 2016 website). The paper must provide the name of the App and detailed description (i.e., the goal, features, functionality, applied techniques, and/or future enhancement), innovation and/or uniqueness in the market, as well as a list of similar or related apps in the market when applicable. The paper must also provide the name and contact information of the author(s). * Supplementary materials (Please pack the code and video into a ZIP file and upload the ZIP file as supplementary materials through the VNC online submission system.) * Code * Android Apps: You must upload an .apk file. * iOS Apps: You must upload a test build. * Others: For other platforms, please upload the executable binary or source codes in a single compressed file. * Video * Less than 5 minutes in length. * Footage must include a comprehensive demonstration clearly outlining the features and functionality of the App. * Finalists will be announced on November 10, 2016. All finalists must attend VNC '16 and provide a 15-minute demonstration of the App to be considered for the final awards. * The following requirements must be followed in the development of all Apps: * Language Requirements * All submission materials must be in English. * App Requirements * Functionality: The App must be ready to install and operate on the platform for which it is intended. The App must function as depicted in the video. * Platforms: Submitted Apps must be implemented on at least one of Android or iOS mobile devices, including phones, tablets, and/or watches, which are suitable for demonstration. All necessary servers or sensors must also be available, as developers will be expected to demonstrate the entire App system if selected as a finalist. * Originality: The App must be newly created by the developer. Apps that have been previously published or posted on Google Play or Apple Store (or any similar app distribution sites) are ineligible. The App may not be submitted simultaneously to another contest. * Copyright issues: All materials used in the app, including drawings, images, sounds, and computer code, must be original. It is the responsibility of the individual making the submission to secure necessary permissions and/or licenses for the use of any auxiliary materials that include the work of third-party individuals or organizations (including copyrighted music or movie excerpts). Evaluation Criteria * Creativity and Innovation: Inventive new ideas for the transportation sector; creativity and design that makes an impact. * Potential Value: Potential to assist individuals, organizations, or communities to make informed decisions. * Technical Depth: Technical expertise in wireless communication, data analytics, machine learning, visualization, etc. * Completeness: Authors should not overstate the capability of their apps. Scenarios include mobile communication networks, haptic communications for 5G, device-to-device (D2D) networks, and wearable sensor networks. In these systems, human users interact extensively with the system, and the user-perceived quality-of- experience (QoE) is critical. However, various important human factors, e.g., predictable and repeating behavior, have not yet been well understood and fully taken into consideration in current generation mobile networks. Hence, a paradigm shift is required for designing a new human-in-the-loop architecture for mobile networks, by actively learning, predicting, adapting to, and steering user behavior, so as to greatly improve system efficiency and to provide superior users QoE. Specifically, such an architecture includes the following main components. (i) Human behavioral big data: Large-scale data is the foundation of user behavior study and prediction. However, their formats must be carefully designed to reflect user features in multi-dimensions, the crowd needs to be incentivized for data sensing and acquisition, and one may also need to leverage distributed caching, computing and communication capabilities of smart devices for scalable and reliable data communications. (ii) Human behavior learning and analytics: Human behavior exhibits significant amount of predictability, and tends to have repeated patterns, e.g., mobility and usage patterns. Efficient techniques must be developed or tailored towards human behavior modeling and data processing, and must be able to handle the dynamic nature of acquired data and respect heterogeneous constraints in data sampling and processing. (iii) Intelligent control for human-intense mobile networks: Online learning-based control and predictive control techniques must be developed to enable seamless integration of data in system optimization. They should be able to exploit benefits of behavior learning, while handling the selfish nature of human users and randomness in human actions, with the ultimate objective of guaranteeing superior QoE in resource-limited mobile networks. In this special issue, we focus on fundamental problems involving human activities and interactions with future mobile networks. We invite submissions of high-quality original technical papers, which have not been published previously. The operation of modern electronic communication devices rely on constant energy sources such as DC power obtained from AC sources via AC to DC conversion or small chargeable/replaceable batteries. However, in some cases, providing constant energy source is not feasible. Due to the advancement in technology, energy harvesting technologies can be exploited to power-up the modern day electronic communication devices. These energy harvesting technologies rely on energy sources naturally present in the environment, such as solar energy, wind energy, and heat energy. Moreover, energy can also be acquired from the human body from movement of different parts of the body such as walking, heartbeat, movement of arms, just to name a few. All these energy harvesting technologies and techniques may satisfy the need of energy for low power communication devices and may enable the charging of electronic mobile devices anywhere and at any time. In this Special Section, we focus on the most recent advances in the interdisciplinary research areas encompassing the Energy Harvesting domain. This special section will bring together researchers from diverse fields and specializations, such as communications engineering, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering, bio-medical engineering, education sector, mathematics and specialists in the areas related to energy harvesting technologies. From the perspective of power sector, V2G networks necessitate a careful management of the energy flow for charging/discharging a tremendous number of EVs, with the objectives of guaranteeing grid stability, improving energy utilization, and reaping potential arbitrage value. Meanwhile, as indispensable bridges for managing the EVs connected to the power grid and the associated energy flows in V2G networks, designs of efficient communication networks for facilitating V2G/V2V communications are indispensable. Such designs not only cover a wide range of important directions such as network infrastructures, cross layer communication protocols, signaling systems, quality of service! , and resource managements, but also need the integration of the emerging ICT technologies such as M2M (or D2D) communications, IoT networks, software defined networks. In WSRN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSRNs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials.WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSRN. Topic of Interest Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSRN and traditional wireless sensor networks, robotic networks, as well as robotics and automation. The maximum length of ICNC paper without over-length charge is FIVE (5) page. The authors are allowed to pay for up to TWO (2) additional pages at $150 per over length page. Submitted papers may not have been previously published in or under consideration for publication in another journal of conference. The organizing committee of WiSARN reserves the right to not review papers that either exceed the length specification or have been submitted or published elsewhere. Submissions must include title, abstract, keywords, author and affiliation with email address. During the initial paper submission process via EDAS, the authors are required to make sure the pdf file and EDAS registration page of a paper have the same list of authors and the paper title. Be certain to add all authors in EDAS during the initial paper submission process. Failure to comply with this rule may cause a paper be withdrawn from the review process. Starting as a niche application over Wi-Fi, they can now be found in mainstream technologies like Bluetooth LE, LTE Direct and Wireless LANs, and have become the cornerstone of upcoming networking paradigms including mesh and sensor networks, the Internet of Things, cloud networks, vehicular networks, disruption tolerant and opportunistic networks, underwater and intra-body networks. The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. Examples include how to make smart use of these novel technologies when multiple technologies or a mix of permanent services and on-demand networking opportunities are available to a network node, how to provide robust services in highly dynamic environments, how to efficiently employ and operate heavily resource-constrained devices, and how to develop robust and lightweight algorithms for self-organization and adaptation. Finally, there are many application-specific challenges. WONS, now in its thirteenth edition, is a high quality forum to address these challenges. WONS aims to provide a global platform for rich interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative contributions in a stimulating environment. This announcement solicits original contributions of high-quality research providing novel insights on all aspects of wireless on-demand networks and systems; from protocol and network design, modeling, performance evaluation, energy efficiency, QoS models and mechanisms, practical implementations, service level aspects, application use-cases, to the integration of multiple wireless network technologies.
