Contributions can be analytical, empirical, technological, methodological, or even cross-cutting. Evaluations should be appropriate to the type of contribution in terms of metrics and scale. Papers reporting strong systems engineering contributions backed by solid and appropriate evaluations are strongly encouraged. In all cases, the impact of the contributions should be demonstrated and evaluated in the context of pervasive computing and communications. Papers applying known techniques from other fields must clearly demonstrate substantial novelty in or impact on pervasive computing and communications. ## Workshops and Affiliated Events A number of workshops will be held in conjunction with the main conference. Workshop papers will be included and indexed in the IEEE digital libraries (Xplore) along with papers from the main conference. As in the past, PerCom 2017 will also feature a PhD Forum, Work-in-Progress Posters, and Live Demonstrations. Please visit the conference website for details. ## Best Paper Award The best paper will receive the prestigious Mark Weiser Best Paper Award. Papers of particular merit will be considered for a special issue of the Elsevier journal of Pervasive and Mobile Computing (PMC). ## Submission Guidelines Submitted papers must be unpublished and not considered elsewhere for publication. Also, they must show a significant relevance to pervasive computing and networking. Only electronic submissions in PDF format will be considered. Papers must be 9 pages of technical content (10pt font, 2-column format), including text, figures, and tables and up to one additional page for references only. The IEEE LaTeX and Microsoft Word templates, as well as formatting instructions, can be found here (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Intelligent Vehicles: As vehicles are equipped with more sensing and computing capabilities, vehicles become more intelligent and are able to accomplish a number of challenging tasks including autonomous driving. We are currently witnessing the pursuit of high-performing, reliable, scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as associated mobility services. These ongoing innovations present an extraordinary challenge for the research community. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. CarSys 2016 brings together researchers from these initiatives around the world to chart the way forward in this rapidly evolving field. In the current cloud-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) model, smart devices (such as sensors, smartphones) exchange information through the Internet (routers and/or servers on cloud) to cooperate and provide services to users, which could be citizens, smart home systems, and industrial applications. Even though the cloud based IoT model describes a uniform, concise, and scalable solution for supporting IoT applications, the deployments of IoT applications on cloud, however, are facing the challenges originated from economic considerations, social concerns, technical limitations, and administrative issues. In real world, things (which could be cheap sensors) generate lots of data. Moving these big data from the network edge (end networking devices) to the network core (cloud computing servers) and vis verse naturally brings the following issues: (i) it is expensive for moving the big data through the Internet; (ii) the cost is prohibitively high when storing the big data on clouds; (iii) the Internet access may be unavailable, unreliable, and slow; (iv) the Internet access might be congested by the big data transmissions; (v) the Internet based transmissions may increase the probability of information leakage; (vi) the large number of things, which may have less or no security protection, may be easily utilized by hackers to start DDoS attacks; (vii) the administrative team may question the security, the easiness, and the availability of managing the big data saved on clouds. On the other hand, clouds may not be always necessary for implementing IoT solutions. For instances: (i) data generated by things may only be valuable for a group of users who are closely located; (ii) existing infrastructures may still be good and scaling up could be achieved by local resource sharing; and (iii) local mass data storage is already sufficient; etc. There is no doubt that the big data generated by things is surprisingly useful. Fog consists of all the smart computing/sensing systems that are around us, tied together. Typically, it includes a small data center that is placed close to the things in IoT. Fog computing is probably the most promising technology to support IoT applications while simultaneously and successfully addressing all the aforementioned challenges and issues. It adds a new dimension to IoT model for meeting the customers’ needs such as fast connection, high security, easy for management, infrastructure reuse, off load core network traffic, and scale quickly. Fog Computing are expected to support a wide range of IoT applications, including device-to-device data sharing, wearable cognitive assistance, video editing and sharing, vehicular systems, and etc. To address the arising new challenges and opportunities, we plan this feature topic issue to help both industry and academia research communities better understand the recent advances and potential research directions on the converging paths of IoT and Fog Computing. The papers in this feature topic issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research and the grant challenges in various aspects of Fog Computing for IoT. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000. With ageing, probability increases of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. IoT technology may provide significant enhancement to quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need. Effective solutions for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) require appropriate ICT algorithms, architectures and platforms, that cannot leave out of consideration the development of new and innovative approaches, particularly in the area of pervasive and mobile systems. The personal communication between elderly people, their environment, and relevant groups of care givers is an important aspect in AAL; such a need for a pervasive connectivity may leverage the IoT capabilities, to connect humans to smart objects, and put smart objects at the service of users’ needs. At the same time, the realm of Active and Assisted Living may provide a way to capitalize the vast amount of research and knowledge developed up to know in the manifold aspects and facets of IoT. This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship among IoT and AAL, to identify effective approaches towards an increased Quality of Life for the current and future ageing populations. Among the different technical issues that have to be considered when designing IoT solutions for AAL, some of them emerge as critical, i.e.: low power communication technologies and energy-saving design at different layers, and in a cross-layer approach; security and privacy issues, both at the single node/object level, and in a system/platform perspective; big data, analytics, and signal processing for AAL enabled by an IoT approach; cloud and mobile cloud architectures supporting AAL through IoT. Nevertheless, applications that operate in such environments generate mission critical data that must be disseminated promptly and reliably, despite the challenging nature of the communication environment. Many years of research efforts have been invested into IP-based communication networks to achieve the above goals, but only resulted in limited success. The root cause of the difficulties is a fundamental mismatch between the IP-based communication model and the challenged environments. The former assumes communications through established stable infrastructures. It requires the creation and maintenance of end-to-end connectivity between senders and receivers, while neither the infrastructure nor end-to-end connectivity exists in the latter. The key to solving the problem is to identify a new communication model that makes effective use of the heterogeneous network resources of challenged environments, removes dependency on infrastructure components, and emphasizes data dissemination in lieu end-to-end connectivity. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and Named Data Networking (NDN), as the most prominent realization of the ICN vision, have emerged in recent years as promising directions to address the above stated challenges. By its name, this new networking model focuses on information (named data) retrieval, instead of reachability between nodes and locations. Therefore, it can circumvent the lack of persistent connectivity in challenged environments by focusing on moving data instead of end-to-end connectivity, utilizing any connectivity, as it comes into existence, to move data hop-by-hop towards requesting parties. This workshop aims to provide a timely venue for all interested parties to exchange their ideas and initial results in applying the NDN paradigm to: address the communication needs of mission critical applications in challenged environments, explore different design options, and identify design tradeoffs. By directly addressing information, ICN supports mobile users and mobile networked devices, offers a higher-level communication service to applications, and promotes authentication and efficiency in the transmission and dissemination of information. Over the last few years, a global research and development community has grown around the idea of ICN. ICN 2016 is the third edition of the ACM Conference on Information-Centric Networking, the premier international forum for researchers and practitioners to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, experiences, and challenges in information centric networking. ACM ICN 2016 will be a single-track conference featuring paper and poster presentations, panel discussions, and demonstrations. In addition to the "best paper award", ACM ICN 2016 will give this year a "best demo award" (based on community judging by registered participants), as well as a "best dataset award" (for poster submissions qualifying for this category). The Technical Program Committee of ACM ICN 2016 invites high-quality submissions describing unpublished research results in all aspects of ICN. The third edition on ACM ICN will especially welcome work that reflects the maturity of ICN field, under several angles, including for instance interoperability, architectural comparison with quantitative assessment, and critical reassessment of previous work with particular emphasis on contributions to architectural designs and reproducible experimental evaluations. Specifically, authors are required to adhere to the ACM Policy and Procedures on Plagiarism and the ACM Policy on Prior Publication and Simultaneous Submissions. ACM ICN 2016 invites two kind of submissions, namely Full-paper and Short-paper submissions. All submissions must be in English and in PDF format. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE's D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the ten previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year's edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in the **new directions of challenged networking such as mobile cloud/mobile edge computing, IoT, mobile data offloading, and challenged SDN**. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. BuildSys has established itself as the premier conference for researchers and practitioners working to develop and optimize smart infrastructure systems that are driven by sensing, computing, and control functions. Paper submissions should be no more than the indicated page count and must follow a double column format. All figures, appendices, and references must fit within this page limit. Paper reviewing is single-blind and submissions should list author names on the front page. Regular and short papers must be submitted through the BuildSys submission site. In the meantime, the network infrastructure is the process of transforming from a hardware dominated landscape to an increasingly virtualized and software-defined, cloud-based system with decreasing dependency on hardware. The increasing ability to collect and process large amount of data pertaining to network, devices, and users is posing new challenges to network design. As these trends continue in the near future, a reexamination is urgently required for the architecture of the mobile-centric Internet. Particularly, there is a need to deal with new opportunities and challenges as a result of the support of information and contents, the availability of software defined architecture, the computational support from the cloud, the emerging spectrum access techniques and the massive amount of data. MobiArch 2016 has mobile Internet data analysis as the central theme, a new rising and challenging networking environment that mixes the mobility of users and the design of mobile services and networks with the analysis of data coming from the network, the devices and the applications. The emergence of Cloud-dependent mobile services and the widespread growth of user-generated data, as well as the ever increasing use of cellular and wireless technologies, are leading to the collection of a vast amount of user mobility data as well as measurements of network states and service provisioning elements. In this context, various networking challenges rise such as seamless IP mobility management, the definition of algorithms correlating user mobility and application usages, the online or offline exploitation of large amount of mobility and usage data from the access network and user devices, the possibility of offload computing tasks, whole application or part of device operating system to the cloud, possible algorithm correlating traffic offloading to content offloading and application offloading as a consequence of mobile data analysis, pattern inference and estimation, etc. To tackle these challenges, various issues need to be addressed, such as efficient mobility management and optimization, security and privacy, multi-homing, transport over wireless access, user incentives to reduce network congestion, incentives for network providers to deploy new/alternative mobile Internet infrastructure, incentives for service developers/providers to define new mobile services, efficient multimedia content distribution, information centric networking solutions, collection and management of data, new business models for mobile data, to related operational concerns and legal issues. MobiArch 2016 welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners from academia and industry that explore challenges and advances in architectures, protocols, and technologies in the current Internet or in the future clean-slate Internet. In fact, most technologies and solutions for accessing real-world information are either closed, platform-specific, or application-specific. Recent efforts to define IoT reference architectures, such as IoT-A, OpenIoT, SENSEI, or FI-WARE, are important steps in the right direction, but they still lack features that are important for people-centric applications, such as adaptability, intuitiveness, and integration capabilities. So, on one hand, there is need to define an IoT architecture that goes beyond vertical solutions by integrating all required technologies and components into a common, open and multi-application platform. On the other hand, there is need to develop a set of common building blocks, middleware and services that can be used to construct people-oriented applications in an open, dynamic and more effective way into smart environments including but not restricted to smart cities, businesses, education and e-health. This Feature Topic solicits technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, pertaining to People-Centric Internet of Things, including architectural aspects, middleware, and applications. It provides a forum for a broad range of unsolicited high quality scientific research papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. Submissions should clearly identify how they relate to topics under consideration in this special issue. Contributions describing an overall working system and reporting real world deployment experiences are particularly of interest. Particularly encouraged are the demonstrations that include participation by conference attendees. Research prototypes as well as commercial products are welcome. However, MobiHoc is not an appropriate forum for marketing or sales presentations. The presenter is expected to understand the system being demonstrated and explain the technical contributions of the system to the audience. This can include Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality interactions. * Advanced manufacturing and logistics with IoT: Evaluation of challenges of real world deployments of Industrie 4.0, Industrial Internet and GS1 system implementations. Including planned deployments, investigations of consumer aspects of 3D printing technology and IoT. * Internet of Things architecture: Novel information architecture design on field device, edge device and servers in cloud, investigation of technologies supporting transitioning functional and processing allocation across system entities. * Advanced data capturing and networking technology: Novel and advanced object identification, access and networking technology, localization, image recognition, 3D scanning methods to facilitate capturing physical events and reality. * Interoperability of IoT systems: Service and device discovery, synchronization of distributed directory systems, and semantic data description frameworks. * Data sharing and acceptance of IoT Systems: Data security, authentication and authorization. Privacy protection, data sharing technologies (incl. blockchain technology), tampering protection and detection in IoT systems. Only full papers written in the English language will be considered for acceptance in the conference proceedings and must contain original material that has not been published in other publication venues or is currently under review elsewhere. In this view, consumer centric solutions, platforms, data management, and business models have to be developed and consolidated in order to deploy effective solutions in the specific fields. The availability of low cost general purpose processing and storage systems with sensing/actuation capabilities (now available also to prosumers) coupled with communication capabilities are broadening the possibilities of IoT leading to open systems that will be highly programmable, virtualized and will support large numbers of APIs. Internet of Things emerges as a set of integrated technologies new exciting solutions and services that are set to change the way people live, produce goods. Internet of Things is rewarded by many as a fruitful technological sector in order to generate revenues. IoT covers a large wealth of consumer centric technologies (from sensors to communications up to software platforms) and it is applicable to an even larger set of application domains (from manufacturing to e-health, from logistics to automotive). Innovation will be nurtured and driven by the possibilities offered by the combination of increased technological capabilities, new business models and the rise of new ecosystems. IoT will be characterized by a few enablers: * Sensors, actuators and new consumer devices. * New Communication capabilities (from short range to LPWAN to 4G and 5G networks, with NB-IoT). In addition, new communication protocols and the exploitation of NFV/SDN for better communications. * Data management and Big Data analysis to deal with large data sets and streams generated by IoT systems. * New solutions for large distributed systems (e.g., combination of Cloud, Grid and Edge/Fog Computing). * Cognitive systems. Large IoT systems will be more and more complex, and as such they will require new cognitive techniques in order to be effective. * Platform programmability. APIs and other means for supporting the programmability of IoT systems in order to enable the exploitation of programmable features made available. * New Business models and ecosystems. What is the value of IoT systems, what ecosystems support it, how to monetize IoT. * Consumer centric aspects including IoT application development, utilization of semantics and security, privacy, trust. This proposed Feature Topic (FT) issue will gather articles from a wide range of perspectives in different industrial and research communities of IoT. The primary FT goals are to advance the understanding of the challenges faced in IoT communications, networking, distributed processing, new signal processing capabilities, software platforms and end – users devices over the next decade, and provide further awareness in the IoT research communities on these challenges, thus fostering future investigation. In addition a perspective on the business possibilities of IoT are of interest in order to enable and deploy the foreseen technical solutions. Submissions for both posters and demos should not be more than three pages (strictly based on IEEE conference 2-column template) in length. The documents must contain the authors' names, affiliations, and contact information and the designated corresponding author. Accepted authors of posters/demos will have a space in the poster/demo session room to display their posters or exhibit their demos, as well as to describe their work in discussions with interested attendees.
