One of these quality goals, which become more and more important, is “energy efficiency of software systems”. Improving the energy consumption of mobile devices will not only increase the uptime and battery lifespan, it will also improve the carbon footprint. Viewing energy efficiency, is not only restricted to mobile devices, it also affects e.g. embedded systems and data centers, where energy is a major factor in costs and environmental burden. Next to serious and ongoing efforts in hardware design, on operating system level, and by optimized code generation, software engineering techniques also contribute to optimizing energy consumption by improving software design: wasting energy can be avoided by e.g. removing energy code smells, improving data-base queries and storage methodologies, exchanging fast, but energy consuming components by slower but more energy efficient alternatives. The EASED workshop series on Energy Aware Software-Engineering and Development, which will be held at EnviroInfo for the 5th time, focusses on the intensive presentation and discussion of methods and technologies to optimize the energy consumption of systems by improving the used software. Among others, these techniques include techniques * detecting energy smells, * optimizing code, * avoiding energy waste, * measuring energy consumption, caused by software, and * modeling software caused energy behavior of embedded systems. EASED@EnviroInfo requests for papers according the EnviroInfo paper style, e.g. presenting * online and offline approaches and techniques to estimate or measure the software related energy consumption of embedded systems and/or its components, * techniques validating improvement of energy consumption by these techniques, * models, metrics, or profiles representing the energy consumption of complex systems and their components like memory, CPU, bus systems, displays, communication interfaces, * approaches to derive energy models, metrics, or profiles from existing systems, * standardized procedures to compare and certify the energy consumption of software intensive systems, and experience reports on applying these techniques and procedures Proceedings of the workshop will be published within the EnviroInfo proceedings. Quality Characteristics and Workshop Management Workshop submissions will be handled by the EnviroInfo submission system. Submissions will be selected based on their scientific contribution to the workshop´s topics and their potential to stimulate intensive discussions on the energy-efficiency on software intensive systems. Format of the Workshop The EASED workshop series are carried out as discussion-intensive workshops, to provoke intensive collaborations among the participants, so discussions within the presentations are welcome. Next to presenting papers, further discussion sessions will be planned to set up and establish intensive collaborations between the participants, maybe to initiate further common research activities. According to an "anti-Copernican" view, humans are put back at the centre of the "Internet universe", whenever they are in the loop of cyber-world services. Applications, middlewares, but even Internet services and network protocols are more and more designed incorporating Human Individual and Social Behavioural (HISB) models. This is particularly the case when users' personal devices are themselves the network, or provide services to each other such as in mobile self-organising networks, because devices become the "proxies" of their users in the cyber world. Interestingly, similar approaches are also explored in Internet technologies in developing scenarios, where users' participation is often exploited as another resource for networking services. This vision, that we call "the Internet of People" (IoP) generalises emerging concepts and technologies such as IoT, which put the emphasis on the communication between "machines", and adapt to the users' behaviour only as an afterthought. Designing IoP protocols, services and applications thus requires a profound inter-disciplinary approach, where "non-ICT disciplines" such as social sciences, cognitive sciences, economics, complex network sciences, impact the way Internet algorithms are conceived and defined. Note that other types of inter-disciplinary design patterns i.e., bio-inspired approaches where non-human natural behaviours are used as inspiration for network protocols and services, are out of scope. This workshop aims to stimulate research following this view, and aggregate an inter-disciplinary community of researchers around the concept of the Internet of People. Specifically, we seek papers presenting IoP approaches, addressing any layer of the canonical Internet stack or cross-layer combinations thereof, where the human behaviour is at the centre of the design. Also, we welcome submissions that analyse how the human behaviour is affected (and possibly modified) by the use of Internet systems, and how the latter can be improved or re-designed accordingly. The workshop will accept papers where quantitative evidence is available or quantitative approaches are applied. Therefore, purely methodological papers or qualitative analyses will be considered out of scope. Papers proposing novel, thought provoking ideas, possibly presenting preliminary results and analyses are also welcome. However, we do not call for position papers. Surrounding energy, from sources such as solar, wind, radio frequency, etc., can be collected and stored for sustainable operation, leading to a new area: battery-free systems. Getting rid of batteries, nodes can be applicable to scenarios where nodes with large volume and limited lifetime are not preferred. Such battery-free systems have great potential to function autonomously, doing sensing and communications tasks without attended operation from human after deployment. The challenging issue lies in how to coordinate the sensing and communications among battery-free nodes such that the system performance can be guaranteed. Since the energy arrival at nodes is typically hard to predict, some preliminary works have been done to design efficient energy management schemes. However, it is still pressing to design a new architecture that enables autonomous battery-free sensing and communications. The objective of this call is to bring more thoughts, effort, and applications in the related areas that may help put together a clear picture for this new area. The potential interesting topics of this call include, but are not limited to: New energy harvesting technologies for battery-free systems; Energy management for perpetual operation; New architectures for battery-free sensing and communications; Resource management for autonomous operations; Operating systems for battery-free devices; Security issues in battery-free systems Emerging applications by battery-free systems Future directions for battery-free systems The manuscript must be original and has not been under submission in any other journals or conferences. On the other hand, rural areas may become depopulated and have a hard time keeping up with changes in business technology and management. Connected Communities is an emerging research area investigating design, deployment and management techniques for establishing and maintaining an ICT infrastructure supporting a highly connected, data-intensive and sustainable urban community. It also considers BURD-Bridging the Urban Rural Divide - looking at means to leverage the advances in wireless and mobile communications to engage and sustain rural communities. Pervasive sensing enables collecting and sharing information about mobile users and their surrounding environments, which promises to enhance the awareness of the cyber, physical, and social environment and thus provide essential supports, in forms of services, applications, and so forth, to our daily lives. More and more researchers started to investigate the potential of pervasive sensing in different disciplines. However, a diverse range of problems and challenges remain existent and need emerging solutions, especially on theoretical studies, practical applications, architectures, and experimental prototypes issues. Examples of such mergers include e.g. Intelligent Transport Systems (ICT, transport telematics, traffic engineering), electric vehicles (ICT, automotive, power supply), e-health (ICT, medicine) and, perhaps ultimately, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS; ICT and pretty much everything else). For CPSs, hard requirements on e.g. reliability and response times imply that often technologies will need to be co-developed (as opposed to be integrated ex-post). Such co-development will require very close co-operation between the different technical disciplines. This represents a considerable problem also for standards setting. Standards Setting Organisations (SSOs) with very different cultures and from equally different backgrounds with very diverse technology life cycles will need to co-operate. On top of that, CPSs in general and specifically applications like e-health need to address issues of information security and safety and of trust up-front. The WS aims to discuss how standardisation of (e)merging technologies should be managed from a European perspective. This includes trying to find answers to questions like (among others) - How can cross-disciplinary standardisation be achieved? - Is there a need for closer collaboration between the European Standards Organisations (ESOs) and private standards consortia? If so, how could this be organised? - Could there be benefits in actively encouraging and founding (EU-led) consortia specifically targeting CPSs? - How could co-operation between ESOs and their international counterparts (ISO, IEC, ITU) be improved? - Is increased co-operation with emerging powerful players from China desirable in the field of CPSs? - How can conditions that improve the link between R&D and standardisation in the field of CPSs be established? - How can all relevant stakeholder groups be adequately involved in the process? - Which role could and should the European Commission play in this process? Such drones are autonomous systems with a good awareness of their environment, provided by rich on board sensors, such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, lasers, GPS units and cameras, and embedded image processing. Nevertheless, all useful applications require a reliable communication link, or even rely on fleets of MAVs. DroNet welcomes contributions dealing with communication aspects of micro aerial vehicles, theoretical studies, algorithm and protocol design for flexible aerial networks, as well as mission-oriented contributions dealing with requirements, constraints, safety issues, and regulation. We are particularly looking for papers reporting on system aspects and experimental results, summaries of challenges or advancements, measurements, or innovative applications. To make a city smart, a strong communication infrastructure is required for connecting smart objects, people, and sensors together. Smart city communication involves multiple aggregation and access networks that can be either public or private. The rapid progress in smart cities research is posing enormous challenges in terms of significance, scope, and problem domain. Smart cities rely on wireless and mobile technologies for providing services such as healthcare assistance, security and safety, real-time traffic monitoring, and managing the environment, to name a few. Such applications have been a main driving force in development of smart cities. These mobile and wireless technologies enable several new services that result into better decision making and actions made by enterprises and governments.! Without the appropriate communication networks, it is really difficult for a city to facilitate its citizens in sustainable, efficient, and safer manner/environment. Considering the significance of mobile and wireless technologies for realizing the vision of smart cities, there is a need for conducting research to further investigate the standardization efforts and explore different issues/challenges in the wireless technologies, mobile computing and smart environments. This FT focuses on the crossroads between scientists, industry practitioners, and researchers from different domains in the wireless technologies, mobile computing and smart environments. We envision to provide a platform for researchers to further explore the domain and explore the challenges. In this FT, we invite researchers from academia, industry, and government to discuss challenging ideas, novel research contributions, demonstration results, and standardization efforts on enabling mobile and wireless technologies for smart cities. FOCUS FOR THE FT In this FT we would like to try to answer some (or all) of the following questions: How mobile and wireless technologies can improve the performance and services provided by smart cities? How to evaluate the impact of mobile and wireless technologies on smart cities services? What are the key mobile and wireless technological challenges that hinder the development of smart cities? How to standardize the wireless interfaces of devices for communication in smart cities? It is in fact a common opinion that, in the near future, our cities will be populated by a potentially higher number of devices that actively participate to the execution of pervasive and advanced services. At the same time, end-user mobile devices are becoming more and more pervasive. In many countries, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions greatly overcomes the current population (even more than +150%). Furthermore today’s smartphones/devices are provided with increasing sensing/communication/computation capabilities and they are capable to produce fine-grained context-information by properly analysing/mining the data produced by embedded sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, etc. In this futuristic scenario the citizens with their smartphones, tablets and portable devices, will assume the very special role of information prosumers (PROducers and conSUMERS). In fact, they will be constantly connected with whatever surroundings them and they will be formidable information consumers. At the same time, citizens roaming around the city may be considered as mobile probes that, by making uses of cyber and physical data accessible by smartphones, will analyze the situation and will produce reports to the community. Furthermore the citizen’s smartphones will actively contribute in creating the communication infrastructure by forwarding data coming from surrounding devices thus partially relieving the communication infrastructure from the heavy burden of the huge amount of data produced in the envisioned scenario. All in all, cities are going to become a new complex ecosystem which has the potentiality to offer many amazing features and support innovative application. Unfortunately, fully exploiting, managing and accessing that ecosystem are still far to be fully viable and their fulfillment surely poses a formidable challenge. The CoWPER workshop aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms, methodological studies and experimentations on how to enable the formerly described ecosystem. Specifically, on how devise a city-wide networking infrastructure capable to efficiently guarantee communication in the new envisaged ecosystem, to manage the complexity of heterogeneous devices and access technologies, and to guarantee robust, ubiquitous, and secure connectivity over the urban environments. For both of the academia and industry, how to utilize the emerging mobile technologies to help people's online social interactions has become a viable trend. The 8th International Workshop on Hot Topics in Planet-scale mObile computing and online Social neTworking (HotPOST 2016) is organized with the goal to bring researchers working on the intersection of mobile and OSN together to present and discuss their latest research results and ideas, thereby promoting the development and evolution of this area.
