The 22nd EW conference will take place in Oulu, Finland, organized by Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC), the university-based research unit operating within the University of Oulu. The main topic of EW 2016 will be "5G: Applications, Businesses and Technologies". Paper submissions are invited in, but not limited to, the main topics of interest listed below. The EW conference is committed to high publication ethics standards through a rigorous single-blind peer-review process. Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Network (IPSN, co-located with CPSWEEK) provides an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present their work in progress to the scientific community and obtain individual feedback from leading researchers in the field. The Forum will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students, followed by collective discussions. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their own perspectives on current and future research in the field, as well as on how to best purse a Ph.D. in this context. A "speed mentoring" session will conclude the Forum to let the students obtain individual feedback and advise. Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with CPSWEEK attendees. Current Ph.D. students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-page abstract about their on-going research to be considered for the Ph.D. Forum. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph bio, along with brief information on how long the student has been in Ph.D. school and the expected time until graduation. The student should be the *sole* author, although contributions of the advisor and others should be acknowledged. The presentation at the Forum and the poster at the conference will be considered for a "Best Research Proposal" award. The Ph.D. forum abstracts will also be part of the official IPSN proceedings. Submissions will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Forum committee to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance to the Forum. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person to the Forum - to be held on April 11th, 2016 - and to present a poster both at the Forum and at the main conference. There will be no separate registration fee for the Forum. Participating students will only need to register to the main IPSN conference. In addition to full-length technical papers, IPSN welcomes exciting demonstrations of novel sensor network technology, applications, and hardware as well as posters showing promising early work. All location techniques, such as ranging, fingerprinting, infrastructure, or device free, are welcome, except those that require end users' manual measurements. Contesters can deploy their own infrastructure of *up to 5 devices*. Normal RF interference is expected, but no jammers from other deployments are allowed. The results must be shown on a portable device, such as a phone or a tablet/laptop that a person can easily carry around. Demo submissions that do not meet one or more of the guidelines above will be included in the poster session and will be evaluated as a regular submission, but they will not be considered for prizes. The competition will take place if *at least 5 teams* respond to this preliminary call for competition. CATEGORIES Depending on the nature and number of submissions multiple categories might be defined based on the accuracy (i.e., point-based vs. area based), the size, the cost, or the type (i.e., software vs. hardware) of the proposed solution. Given our past experience, this year we expect to have the following categories (note that these categories have not been finalized. The final categories will be announced shortly after the registration deadline and they will depend on the number and type of submissions received): 1. Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Technologies: Submissions in this category should be able to work with unmodified commercial off-the-shelf devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets. In this category, the unmodified COTS device is localized. Teams in this category will not be allowed to interface any custom hardware to the COTS devices (i.e., UWB or ultrasound hardware). Only changes to the software of the devices will be allowed. Submissions in this category could be further classified to infrastructure-based and infrastructure-free depending on their requirement to deploy custom hardware (i.e., BLE beacons) in the evaluation area. 2. Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Technologies with Initialization: Submissions in this category should meet all the criteria of the COTS Technologies category, with the additional requirement to initialize the location of the COTS device being localized to a ground truth location before the evaluation. 3. Modified Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Technologies: Submissions in this category could interface custom hardware to the COTS devices to be localized (i.e., UWB or ultrasound hardware). Submissions in this category could be further classified to infrastructure-based and infrastructure-free depending on their requirement to deploy custom hardware (i.e., BLE beacons) in the evaluation area. Most, if not all, submissions in this category are expected to be infrastructure-based. For instance: * WiFi fingerprinting approaches that also leverage inertial sensors will be classified as infrastructure-free COTS Technologies as they do not require to interface any custom hardware to the COTS device being localized. * WiFi fingerprinting approaches that also deploy custom BLE beacons in the evaluation area will be classified as infrastructure-based COTS Technologies as they don't modify the COTS device being localized, but they require the deployment of custom hardware. * Approaches based on inertial sensing that require to be initialized to a ground truth location before being evaluated will be classified as COTS Technologies with Initialization. * UWB approaches will be classified as infrastructure-based modified COTS Technologies as they require modifications to the COTS device being localized, and they need to deploy custom hardware in the evaluation area. In the past, teams were asked to report 2D locations (X,Y). In this year's competition, teams will be required to report 3D locations (X,Y,Z). The evaluation area we have reserved, even though it does not contain multiple floors, it includes locations with different elevation characteristics. On top of that, we plan to place the devices to be localized at different heights during the competition to evaluate the 3D localization accuracy of each team. *Not all teams will have to report 3D locations*. We understand that some technologies are not suited for 3D localization (i.e., WiFi/geo-magnetic fingerprinting, dead reckoning, BLE-based etc.), but they are still excellent candidates for commercial indoor location systems. With this in mind, the organizers will determine shortly after the registration deadline which teams will be classified as 3D localization teams. It is not up to the individual teams to decide if they will report 2D or 3D locations. The organizers will ensure that all the teams in a given category will either report 2D or 3D locations. There will be no categories containing both 2D and 3D localization teams. EVALUATION AND PRIZE Results are judged based on accuracy, and an award will be given to the top 3 teams in each category. When accuracy ties, infrastructure requirements will be used for tie breaking. The winning teams in each category will be invited to present their approach at the conference, and receive a cash award. The exact accuracy metrics that will be used during evaluation will be announced shortly before the competition takes place. POSTER SESSION A poster session dedicated to all competition participants will be organized during the conference. Participants will have the opportunity to explain their system to conference attendees. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Contesters must submit an abstract describing their approach and deployment requirements by the contest registration deadline. Submissions are treated as confidential until the competition. Submissions must be at most two (2) single-spaced 8.5" x 11" pages, including figures, tables, and references. The seamless integration and convergence of vehicular communication networks, information and transportation systems, and mobile devices and networks will face a number of technical, economical and regulatory challenges. To that end, SmartVehicles 2016 workshop will bring together academics, researchers, and industry professionals from around the world to discuss and exchange ideas on recent developments, current research challenges and future directions in the use of networking, communications, data management, and applications to realize vehicular mobility systems that are more connected, efficient, and safe. In these networks, the users, but also the network entities can be potentially mobile. Wireless ad-hoc networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in history. Real wireless ad-hoc networks are now implemented, deployed and tested, and this trend is likely to increase in the future. However, as such networks are increasingly complex, performance modeling and evaluation play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful deployment and exploitation in practice. This special issue on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks era aims to open a new critical debate on the evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks. In particular, we seek original theoretical and/or practical contributions, from researchers and practitioners that identify and address issues in evaluating wireless ad-hoc networks. Connected vehicles are seen as one of the key enabling technologies for more efficient and sustainable transportation systems. To enable connected vehicles, it is of paramount importance to: i) design vehicular communication systems that enable road users and other actors to exchange information in real time and with high reliability; ii) enable pervasive sensing to monitor the status of vehicles and the surroundings; iii) develop data analytics tools for processing large amounts of data generated by the transportation infrastructure; iv) develop middleware platforms for information management and sharing; and v) define appropriate interaction interfaces between drivers and vehicles. The seamless integration and convergence of vehicular communication networks, information and transportation systems, and mobile devices and networks will face a number of technical, economical and regulatory challenges. To that end, SmartVehicles 2016 workshop will bring together academics, researchers, and industry professionals from around the world to discuss and exchange ideas on recent developments, current research challenges and future directions in the use of networking, communications, data management, and applications to realize vehicular mobility systems that are more connected, efficient, and safe. CALL FOR PAPERS ADHOC NOW 2016 The 15 th International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless (AdHoc Now) 2016, Lille, France Wireless Networks are becoming a necessity covering a wide range of application domains which include smart environments, health care, industry, precision agriculture, multimedia applications and intelligent transport systems, etc. This advancement in wireless and mobile technologies introduces new challenging issues. Since its creation in 2002, the International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless (AdHoc-Now) has become a well‐established and well known event dedicated to wireless and mobile computing. It serves as a forum for interesting discussions on ongoing research and new contributions. The conference addresses both experimental and theoretical research in the areas of ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mesh networks and vehicular networks. ACM e-Energy 2016: Call for Papers http://conferences.sigcomm.org/eenergy/2016/ Computing and communication technologies impact energy systems in two distinct ways. The exponential growth of these technologies has made them large energy consumers. Therefore, new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient. Additionally, these technologies will play a central role in the on-going transformation of our energy systems. They help measure, monitor and control energy resources, inform and shape human demand, and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers interact. The seventh International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Waterloo Canada in June 2016, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of smart energy systems, and in energy-efficient computing and communications. By bringing together researchers in a single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual interaction, it will be a major forum that will shape the future of this area. We solicit high-quality papers on smart energy systems and energy-efficient computing and communications. We welcome submissions describing theoretical advances as well as system design, implementation and experimentation. ACM eEnergy is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review process with sound and detailed feedback. Wireless sensor networking has attracted the attention of practitioners and researchers from both industry and academia. This type of networks consists of a collection of tiny, resource-limited, low-reliable sensing devices that are randomly or deterministically deployed in a field of interest to monitor a physical phenomenon and report their results to a central gathering point, known as a sink. These sensing devices suffer from their scarce capabilities, such as bandwidth, storage, CPU, battery power (or energy), sensing, and communication. In particular, mission-oriented WSNs are viewed as time-varying systems composed of autonomous mobile sensing devices (e.g., using mobile robots) that collaborate and coordinate distributedly to successfully accomplish complex real-time missions under uncertainty. The major challenge in the design of mission-oriented WSNs is due to their dynamic topology and architecture, which is caused mainly by sensing devices mobility. The latter may have significant impact on the performance of mission-oriented WSNs in terms of their sensing coverage and network connectivity. In such continuously dynamic environments, sensing devices should self-organize and move purposefully to accomplish any mission in their deployment field while extending the operational network lifetime. In particular, the design of mission-oriented WSNs should account for trade-offs between several attributes, such energy consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability, fault-tolerance, and delay. IEEE MiSeNet 2016 will aim to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented WSNs research and practice. IEEE MiSeNet 2016 will serve as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in the area of mission-oriented WSNs. IEEE MiSeNet 2016 will provide its participants with opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges of mission-oriented WSNs as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to their architecture, protocol, algorithm, and application design, in particular at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. IEEE MiSeNet 2016 will seek papers that present novel theoretical and practical ideas as well as work in-progress, which will lead to the development of solid foundations for the design, analysis, and implementation of energy-efficient, reliable, and secure mission-oriented WSN applications. All papers submitted to IEEE MiSeNet 2016 will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on their suitability (i.e., within the workshop scope), novelty, and merit. Submitted papers are limited to 9 pages. All submissions should be formatted in standard IEEE conference style for publication in the conference Proceedings. In these networks, the users, but also the network entities can be potentially mobile. Wireless ad-hoc networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in history. Real wireless ad-hoc networks are now implemented, deployed and tested, and this trend is likely to increase in the future. However, as such networks are increasingly complex, performance modeling and evaluation play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful deployment and exploitation in practice. This special issue on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks era aims to open a new critical debate on the evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks. Paper Submission Guidelines --------------------------- Papers should not exceed 10 pages (US letter size) double column including figures, tables, and references in standard ACM format. No changes to margins, spacing, or font sizes are allowed from those specified by the style files. Papers violating the formatting guidelines will be returned without review. All submissions will be reviewed using a double-blind review process. The identity of authors and referees will not be revealed to each other. To ensure a blind review, the authors' names and affiliations should not appear in the paper or the pdf file; bibliographic references should be made in a way that preserves author anonymity; acknowledgments and support information should not be included. At its core, we solicit papers that address important challenges in access/communication, energy, computing, security and user experience as it applies to wireless networking and mobile computing. In addition to regular, full research papers, the conference also invites submission in the following categories: Experience Papers The conference invites submission of short papers (limited to 8 pages excluding references) that present extensive experiences with implementation, deployment, and operations of mobile systems and wireless networks. Desirable papers are expected to contain real data as well as description of the practical lessons learned. The experiences papers will be evaluated by the MobiCom technical program committee, primarily for (i) the richness of their data or experiences, (ii) inferences drawn or lessons learned, (iii) discovery of new problems, and (iv) their impact on current and future mobile systems and wireless networks as well as on the society. Note that a paper that builds a system and presents a limited experimental evaluation is not suitable as an experience paper. The selected experience papers will be a part of the MobiCom technical program and will be published in the conference proceedings. Challenge Papers The conference also invites submission of short papers (limited to 8 pages excluding references) that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the wireless research community. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Today UAVs are equipped with many onboard sensors such as instrument measurement units (IMUs), global positioning systems (GPS), lasers, and cameras. Using this information, UAVs can work cooperatively in groups or swarms through a wide variety of scenarios, raising important challenges in their cooperative decision making and control. However, the collected context information from these sensors can also be transmitted and shared via wireless multihop communications with not only other UAVs, but also ground control stations and people on the ground. The new generation of smartphones and tablets is capable of establishing wireless communications and sensing a huge number of context variables. Thus, it is possible to plan cooperative missions that comprise both UAVs and other unmanned or manned ground devices, including tablets and smartphones. The cooperation of UAVs with the citizens carrying the portable devices will lead to a plethora of novel applications related to, for example, public protection, aerial monitoring, and transportation of goods. The purpose of this special issue is to publish high quality research papers related to novel applications of UAVs and mobile and wireless networks. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: - Cooperative tactical movements, mobility models, and decision making of UAVs in monitoring applications - Collision and obstacle avoidance using context information - Wireless communication technologies for UAV based applications - Data processing and fusion from UAVs, including artificial intelligence and data mining based strategies - Novel cooperative decisions and control systems, including formation reconfiguration - Communications protocols for UAVs: routing, broadcasting, and data dissemination - Integration and interoperability of wireless UAVs with other wireless multihop ad hoc networks such as MANETs, VANETs, and DTNs - Application of UAVs in disaster scenarios - Multiple UAVs path planning with collision avoidance - UAV-WSN cooperative localization - Context-aware information systems using UAVs - Monitoring applications (aerial photography and video) using UAVs - Simulation, prototypes, and real experimentation of UAV based applications Authors can submit their manuscripts via the Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/misy/auav/. Enriched with several sensing capabilities and networking interfaces, today’s portable devices are enabling new ways of communication including Mobile Networking in Proximity (MNP). This network mode complements the classic scenario with Internet coverage enlarging the range of functionalities of these devices through short-range communications (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi Direct, etc.) in situations where Internet may not be available. When two devices are in proximity, they could still share information without the need of continual Internet connectivity just exploiting the meeting opportunities and activating an opportunistic hop-by-hop forwarding towa! rds the destination. In this view, the social-aware or social-inspired mobile networking research is increasingly underlining the benefits and the need of having knowledge of the social behavior of users for the MNP design. On one hand, the social behavior of mobile nodes can be extracted from mobility. On the other hand, also online social network interactions may provide information about user’s social behavior. As such, the convergence between the two worlds, the physical offline one made by mobile devices and the cyber online one made by the online social networks is getting more and more important, opening a novel and interesting research field with many challenging issues. The goal of this Computer Networks Special Issue is to solicit the research closely related to the mobile and social networking reporting advances on approaches, methods, and applications envisioning and addressing the challenges in this field. To make a city smart, a strong communication infrastructure is required for connecting smart objects, people, and sensors together. Smart city communication involves multiple aggregation and access networks that can be either public or private. The rapid progress in smart cities research is posing enormous challenges in terms of significance, scope, and problem domain. Smart cities rely on wireless and mobile technologies for providing services such as healthcare assistance, security and safety, real-time traffic monitoring, and managing the environment, to name a few. Such applications have been a main driving force in development of smart cities. These mobile and wireless technologies enable several new services that result into better decision making and actions made by enterprises and governments.! Without the appropriate communication networks, it is really difficult for a city to facilitate its citizens in sustainable, efficient, and safer manner/environment. Considering the significance of mobile and wireless technologies for realizing the vision of smart cities, there is a need for conducting research to further investigate the standardization efforts and explore different issues/challenges in the wireless technologies, mobile computing and smart environments. This FT focuses on the crossroads between scientists, industry practitioners, and researchers from different domains in the wireless technologies, mobile computing and smart environments. We envision to provide a platform for researchers to further explore the domain and explore the challenges. In this FT, we invite researchers from academia, industry, and government to discuss challenging ideas, novel research contributions, demonstration results, and standardization efforts on enabling mobile and wireless technologies for smart cities. FOCUS FOR THE FT In this FT we would like to try to answer some (or all) of the following questions: How mobile and wireless technologies can improve the performance and services provided by smart cities? How to evaluate the impact of mobile and wireless technologies on smart cities services? What are the key mobile and wireless technological challenges that hinder the development of smart cities? How to standardize the wireless interfaces of devices for communication in smart cities? However, the convergence of IoT and Cloud can provide new opportunities for both technologies. It can open a new horizon of ubiquitous sensing, interconnection of devices, service sharing, and provisioning to support better communication and collaboration among people and things in a more distributed and dynamic manner. It can also support powerful processing and storage facilities of huge IoT data streams (big data) beyond the capability of individual “things”, as well as to provide automated decision making in real time. Thus, such convergence can enable the development of new innovative applications in various emerging areas such as smart cities, smart grids, smart healthcare and others to improve all aspects of life. While researchers have been making advances in the study of IoT and cloud convergence, very little attention has been given to the impact of next generation mobile and wireless networking technologies such as 5G wireless networks, software-defined networking (SDN), and cloud radio access networks (Cloud RAN) on this convergence paradigm. The next generation networking technologies will be the success factor for realizing this convergence since they will contribute to facilitate resource constrained devices to communicate efficiently with faster data generation and processing as well as improve QoS/QoE in data transmission. In addition, it can pave the way for a new form of interaction between IoT and Cloud by supporting better spectral efficiency, network capacity, mobility and coverage. This FT (Feature Topic) targets a mixed audience of researchers and investigators from several communities and research fields, including those from communications, networks, IoT, multimedia signal processing, distributed and cloud computing as well as other related disciplines to share and exchange new concepts, ideas, principles, and methodologies, aiming to advance the convergence paradigm.
