It will enable preventive care, clinic-centric to patient-centered practice by applying diverse Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in sensors, computing, networking and communication, and can allow the individuals to participate in their own care. Future SCH will be realized by providing rich medical information to each individual through replacing infrequent, clinic-based measurements with unobtrusive, continuous sensing, monitoring and assessment. The development of SCH will play a key role in the modern society to meet the broad goals of medical applications. However, significant challenges still remain in the area. For example, lack of medical baseline data for each particular individual. The IoT technology such as continuous sensing mobile communication can be employed to create individualized baselines. The theme of the special issue (SI) is especially focused on the two major aspects of IoT for SCH: (1) monitoring and assisting individuals utilizing smart systems including sensors, devices, and robotics, (2) an interoperable digital health information infrastructure to increase medical/health information availability and use. The outputs of SCH with IoT could significantly improve a person's outcomes and quality of life. Findings from the SI will provide support for enabling IoT to move the focus from disease to health and wellbeing at the individual, system, and organizational level in many SCH applications. We encourage submissions on theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies, from both academia and industry, related to all aspects of IoT for SCH. In addition, governments and standardization organizations have agreed upon a common set of standards (DSRC) specific to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Combined with the cellular network infrastructure, they pave the way for a plethora of solutions empowered by vehicular communications. Among these solutions we have emergency alerts, autonomous vehicles, infotainment, comfort services, cooperative road sensing and collaborative applications. Also, the integration between smartphones and vehicles has been addressed by many researchers, with a wide range of applications already available, and many more being expected. In terms of communication systems, mobility effects and channel conditions heavily affect the signal quality, introducing path-loss, fading, and received power fluctuations. Under such conditions, several issues remain open including message dissemination in congested environments, Quality of Service (QoS), efficient and adaptive routing, MAC layer enhancements, mobility prediction, efficient handovers, etc. This special issue is seeking for high quality contributions, soliciting high level technical papers addressing the main research challenges in the vehicular networking area. The possible contributions should consist in original theoretical or practical analyses, never published elsewhere, and validated by simulations or real testbeds. In mobile wearable communications, wearable devices communicate with each other in a Peer-to-Peer fashion or client-server fashion and also communicate with aggregation points (e.g. smartphones, tablet devices and gateways nodes). Wearable devices are expected to integrate multiple radio technologies for multiple applications needs with small power consumption and low transmission delays. These devices can hence collect, interpret, transmit and exchange data among supporting components, other wearable devices and the Internet. Data are not limited to people’s personal biomedical data but they also include human-centric social and context data. The success of mobile wearable communications depends on communication and networking architectures that support efficient and secure end-to-end information flows. Akey design consideration of future wearable devices is to ubiquitously connect to smart phones or Internet with very-low energy consumption. The conference will start with 3 days of excursions in the amazing nature of the Galápagos Islands. Along the way, participants will get to see and experience the islands and their plant and animal life, both above and beneath the surface of the ocean. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such a harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. After the excursions, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. ***************** Submission Guidelines --------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. Aims and Scope: Unmanned autonomous systems are increasingly used in a large number of contexts to support humans in dangerous and difficult-to-reach environments: e.g. aerial sensor systems, ground-based robotics, space and underwater applications. In order to fulfill particularly challenging tasks, visionary scenarios foresee unmanned vehicles to be organized in networked teams and even swarms. The corresponding wireless networks need to provide highly reliable and delay-tolerant control links for the behavior management of the unmanned vehicles as well as data links to transfer telemetry and sensor data. At the same time, unmanned vehicles offer the capability to provide ad-hoc wireless networks, for example to facilitate temporary hot spots and compensate network outages in case of public events and emergencies. This fifth edition of the workshop aims to discuss most recent results of various international research projects on new communications networks enabling the efficient control of teams of unmanned vehicles/systems operating on the ground, in the air, underwater and in space scenarios. Contributions addressing heterogeneous scenarios, e.g. combination of aerial and underwater devices are highly welcome. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Traditional examples of challenged networks include inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, rural and remote areas, and military battlefields. Recently, challenged networking has also found applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing. Inter-disciplinary approaches to challenged networking protocols are also successfully explored, exploiting, for example, findings in the area of social networking. The availability of enabling technologies in mobile devices, such as WiFi direct in Android and D2D communication in latest LTE releases, will further push towards practical developments of challenged networking solutions. This workshop builds on the success of the eight previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, to stimulate research on the most novel and challenging topics of challenged network research. CHANTS provides an ideal venue for researchers and engineers to present cutting-edge work and results, as research papers or demos, in the following topics: - Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs) - Opportunistic communication and computing - Architecture, design, and implementation of communication systems for challenged networks - Modeling, analysis and characterization of challenged networks and protocols - Network Coding in Challenged Networks - Information Centric and Content-centric Networking in Challenged Networks - Security/Trust/Privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks - Case studies involving real challenged network solutions in various stages of development or use - Applications of challenged networks in disrupted scenarios (e.g. disaster relief and emergency management) and in daily use (e.g., vehicular networks, mobile social networking, censorship evasion, crowdsourcing, sensor networks) - Green and energy-efficient communication using challenged networks - Real-world mobility trace collection, analysis, and modeling for challenged environments - Network science methods for challenged networks - Mobile data offloading via challenged networks - Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems - Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks - Challenged networking techniques for mobile cloud - Challenged networking techniques for participatory and opportunistic sensing Selected papers will be forward-looking, will describe their relationship to existing work, and will have impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Submitted papers must be no more than 6 pages long, and should adhere to the standard ACM conference proceedings format. The goal of the conference is to foster technical interactions among members of computer and communication networks research at large through a single track program promoting their most promising works. This new installment of the conference is proudly committed to the three values that made the conference successful for nearly ten years: Recognizing farsighted excellence, by selectively choosing papers with substantial novelty and research contribution. Promoting a broad definition of networking research, by welcoming submissions based on implementation and experimentation as well as theoretical analysis. Assuring authors of submitted papers a fair and thorough review process, with sound and detailed feedback guaranteed to each submissions in proportion of its scientific merit and potential. Scope The Program Committee of ACM CoNEXT seeks papers presenting significant and novel research results on emerging computer and communication networks. We especially encour- age submissions that present novel experimentation, creative use of networking technologies and new insights made possible using analysis or computing concepts rarely found among networking researchers. We invite submissions on a wide range of networking research including : * Networking aspects of mobile, wireless and ubiquitous computing * Networking aspects of operating systems and virtualization architectures * Network control and management, including datacenter, enterprise and SDN * Security and privacy aspects of computer networks and protocols * Theory and performance analysis of networking architectures and applications * Novel application of other fields to computer networking We are open to other contributions that stretch networking research outside of these topics, present new emerging computing trends and potentially involve unfamiliar techniques. We invite the authors to bear in mind that the main factor of interest for their work will be the implications of their results in networking. These should be clearly substantiated and explained. Submission Authors must submit their papers electronically, following the guidelines available on the ACM SIGCOMM CoNEXT web page. The committee encourages substantiated results with a succinct presentation. All papers will be part of a single track. More details will be provided on the format of the papers closer to the submission date. The selection of presentations will be based on peer-review by program committee members. This year, in an effort to inform judgment on the selection of presented papers, the PC will organize a rolling early feedback phase. During that time, and before review are completed, PC members are able to request authors for clarifications, typically on assumptions made and results obtained. Authors of submitted papers who receive such a request have the non mandatory option to answer that request within a week. We encourage this interaction espe- cially to give a chance to a minority of "controversial" papers that could be of special interest to our community, but raises important concerns that need to be addressed. Specifically, in the context of UC, a range of communication tools are integrated in a way that both corporations and individuals are able to manage all their communications in one entity instead of doing it disjointly. It is therefore said that UC bridges the opening between the various computer related communication technologies and Voice over IP (VoIP). However, this high level of heterogeneity expands the risks related to security and privacy that stakeholders should deal with. To eliminate or even prevent the increasing threats to end-users and operators, it is important to explore this growing and timely research topic. This feature topic will benefit the research community towards identifying challenges and disseminating the latest methodologies and solutions to UC security and privacy issues. Its objective is to publish high-quality articles presenting open issues, algorithms, protocols, policies, frameworks, standards, and solutions for UC related to security and privacy. Only technical papers describing previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research, and not currently under review by a conference or a journal will be considered. Reviews and case studies which address state-of-art research and state-of-practice industry experiences are also welcomed. Specifically, enabling the design, implementation, validation, and real-world use of IoT software requires that we embrace diverse contributions in coherent and practical development frameworks, possibly based on current and future standards. This special issue seeks contributions about recent or ongoing research efforts, experience reports, and success stories in enabling an effective development of IoT software out of the individual building blocks available in different communities. Topics of interest include: - design and modeling approaches and methodologies for IoT software; - programming abstractions and languages expressly conceived for the IoT; - development techniques for IoT software appropriate for different hardware; - platforms, from tiny sensors to the enterprise level; - approaches for composing and interoperating existing IoT functionality; - cross-layer IoT software architectures; - standards for developing IoT software; and - real-world deployments and experiences in building IoT systems. Submission Guidelines: All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words, focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IEEE Internet Computing international readership: primarily practicing engineers and academics who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens familiarity with current topics. Their powerful computing/communication capacities, huge population, and inherent mobility makes mobile-device networks a much more flexible and cost-effective IoT solution than static sensor networks. This promotes the emergence of a fast-growing consumer-centric sensing paradigm, the Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS). As an evolution of participatory sensing, MCS has two unique features: (1) it involves both implicit and explicit participation; (2) MCS collects data from two user-participant data sources: mobile social networks and mobile sensing. Various categories of knowledge (e.g. location, personal and social context, user feelings/opinions, traffic conditions, and pollution) reported by smart device users, are shared w! ithin the social sphere, practitioners, health care providers, and utility providers, enabling a broad range of applications and services such as urban dynamic mining, public safety, and environment monitoring. Numerous research challenges arise from the MCS paradigm including participatory and opportunistic data collection, incentive mechanism design, transient networking, quality of user-contributed data, privacy concerns, and big data processing and analytics. This special issue provides the opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and application developers to review and discuss the state-of-the-art and trends of MCS techniques and applications or propose new solutions. Best regards, Edward Knightly Harald Haas Hsin-Mu (Michael) Tsai ACM VLCS 2014 Chairs Workshop Theme Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a revolutionary communication technology that makes use of visible light from LED lights or LCD display to carry digital information wirelessly between devices. One of its greatest advantages is that the available bandwidth of the visible light spectrum is much larger - more than 10,000 times larger - than that of the RF spectrum, potentially solving the problem of wireless bandwidth shortage in the near future. In addition, since the radiation pattern of a “visible light transmitter,” i.e., a light, can be easily regulated by its optical design, and visual obstacles such as walls can fully contain the radiation energy (i.e., interference) to a smaller space, the optical spectrum can be used in a very efficient and hence scalable manner. Finally, lights for illumination purposes already exist in every place in our daily life - there are already 12 billion electric light bulbs in the world, consuming about 1/8 of the total electricity use ! - and hence they, or at least a large portion of them, can easily serve as the new infrastructure to provide pervasive wireless communications with minimum additional energy consumption and deployment cost. For the past few years, visible light communications has been an active research topic, and research has already brought the technology closer to commercialization and standardization. The objective of this workshop is to move beyond VLC links and to explore VLC-enabled networks, systems, and applications. The workshop will bring together a diverse community to present and brainstorm on a broad set of VLC-centered topics including unique devices such as camera-based communication to new application scenarios such as vehicular safety networks. The workshop will bring to light new application domains that could take advantage of the unique properties of VLC and enable understanding of how these diverse application requirements would shape the design of next-generation VLC systems.
