Consumers and doctors envisage an era where mobile health monitoring systems will work seamlessly and in concert to eliminate the lag time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis. To this end, WBAN can provide a key contribution, but, compared to traditional wireless sensor and ad hoc networks, it also introduces several new research challenges. The aim of the 2014 IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Sensors Networks for Mobile Health is to collect recent advances on WBAN for healthcare and pervasive applications. Submission of original and unpublished work in all areas of WBAN is welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Antenna design for in- and on-body networks - Channel modeling and radio propagation issues for WBAN - Electromagnetic radiation and human tissues - Interference management and mitigation - Coexistence of WBAN with other wireless technologies - Protocols and algorithms for PHY, MAC and network layers - End-to-end QoS provision for WBAN - Energy efficient and low-power consumption protocols - Power management for WBAN - Machine-to-machine for WBAN - Integration of WBAN with heterogeneous networks - Lightweight security, authentication and cryptography solutions for WBAN - Modeling and simulation for WBAN - Context awareness for WBAN - Energy harvesting for WBAN - Real life experimental platforms, prototypes and pilot studies - Personal devices for monitoring of disease detection, progression, remission and fitness - Recent standardization activities for WBAN - Regulatory issues All papers accepted in MoWNet 2014 workshops will be published in the MoWNet 2014 Proceedings and will be available in IEEE Xplore, since MoWNet'2014 has received the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE Communications Society. ================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd IEEE Workshop on Telecommunication Standards: "From Research to Standards" Part of IEEE Globecom Dec. 8-12, 2014, Austin, Texas, USA The workshop's BEST PAPERS will be recommended for publication at the IEEE Communications Magazine's supplement on Communications Standards. Recommended papers have to follow the submission guidelines of IEEE Communications Magazine. The emergence of nearly-ubiquitous mobile broadband connectivity is revolutionizing the way people live, work, interact, and socialize. Telecommunications are at the heart of this social revolution and have been attracting ever-increasing attention from researchers in both academia and industry. Although both communities have been making outstanding contributions to communications, frequently, one of these communities is unaware of the capacities, expertise, and challenges faced by the other. Standards are keys for the success of the communications industry, as enablers of global systems inter-operability. Moreover, since standardization is inherently a social body, it is a perfect environment for promoting technologies that will evolve an increasingly information oriented society. Building on the success of the previous editions of the workshop, the goal of this event is to close the gap between researchers, scientists, and standards experts from both academia and industry, and to promote standardization as an imperative vehicle for global consensus and cooperation among the key players, especially on the development of next-generation mobile communications systems (5G). An additional goal is to assemble experts from different standardization bodies, providing opportunities for a closer understanding and collaboration, catalyzing development of more interoperable standards, as well as more efficient and effective communication systems. The workshop will be organized in Austin, Texas, as part of IEEE Globecom 2014. The workshop will deliver high quality technical as well as visionary papers, which will be reviewed and selected by an international technical program committee (TPC) representing both academia and industry, with a strong standardization background. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, enhancements to existing systems and communication protocols developed by standards bodies such as ITU-T, IEEE, IETF, 3GPP, TISPAN, ETSI, OMA, Broadband Forum, oneM2M, among others. Visionary papers on hot topics, such as Advanced 5G Network Infrastructure, Software Defined Networks and Services, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), and other works in progress being currently discussed by the standardization bodies are also welcome. All submissions are required to comply with Globecom’s guidelines. Initial submissions for review are limited to seven (7) pages. Camera-ready papers should not exceed six (6) pages including figures without incurring additional page charges (maximum 1 additional page with over length page charge). Each accepted paper must be presented at the workshop by one of the co-authors. Only timely submissions through EDAS will be accepted for review. Accepted papers will appear in IEEE Xplore. It is designed to simulate discrete event systems, but the primary application area is the simulation of communication networks. After six successful editions of the International Workshop on OMNeT++, we decided to change the workshop format to allow for less costs, more interaction between participants, and more coding on-site. The successor of the International Workshop on OMNeT++ is the OMNeT++ Community Summit. The OMNeT++ Community Summit provides a forum for discussions on recent developments and novel ideas in the broad area of network simulation and modeling, with a focus on the OMNeT++ simulation environment. The summit brings together developers and researchers to discuss applications and ideas on the important topics of integrating simulation models, coupling different simulation tools and providing more accurate and more efficient modeling approaches. Further we encourage proposals for tutorials, coding sessions, discussion panels, etc. All submissions to the summit should be of interest to the OMNeT++ community. We welcome case-studies that employ OMNeT++ in the evaluation of new systems as well as contributions addressing general questions of simulation using OMNeT++. For model-centric submissions we encourage the author's to publicize source code at the time of submission. All submissions will be checked by the organizers. Individual contributions will be invited to be presented as oral presentations, posters, demos, tutorials or panels, depending on their expected interest for the community. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful 2007 (Baltimore), 2008 (Calgary), 2010 (Taipei), 2011 (San Francisco) and 2013 (Dresden) editions, the sixth IEEE WiVEC symposium will be co-located with the 80th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2014 Fall conference. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution.?The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate "Big brother scenario". Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0. IoTIP features two tracks: - Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation; - Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT. UCNs are spontaneous and grassroots deployments of wireless architectures (e.g., ad-hoc or infrastructure), often involving low-cost deployment. Furthermore, users in such environments tend to roam frequently. In such roaming environments, users carry equipment that plays an active role in terms of topology changes (e.g., an LTE phone which is sharing Internet access to other surrounding devices, may become active or inactive without operator control). Common to user-centric environments is a social behaviour that heavily impacts network operation from an end-to-end perspective, and on the different layers of the OSI stack. UCNs empower the end-user as a new Internet stakeholder and not just as a consumer and producer of content. User-centric networking technologies can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, encompassing: i) sharing subscribed broadband Internet access; ii) providing support for better Internet connectivity; iii) allowing the use of communication services even in the absence of reliable Internet access; iv) assisting networking services based on user involvement for the detection and repair of communication problems. The new role of an empowered end-user is disruptive in several aspects, namely: i) in the end-to-end Internet paradigm, end-user devices will actively participate as a network element in addition to being an endpoint host; ii) network boundaries of trust will need to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior; and iii) end-user devices should be capable of handling intermittent Internet connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators. There is also the need to further understand wholesale models incorporating UCNs, as well as to understand the impact of UCNs in the context of standardization. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network. In some scenarios, data even has to travel through the sensor network and the Internet to reach the destination. According to recent predictions, 25 billion of "things" will be connected to the Internet by 2020 among which vehicles will constitute a significant portion. The difference of the vehicle concept in VANET and IoV makes these two scenarios essentially different in the device, communications, networking, and services aspects. In VANET, a vehicle is mainly considered as a node to disseminate messages among vehicles. In the IoV paradigm, each vehicle is considered as a smart object equipped with a powerful multi-sensor platform, communications technologies, computation units, IP-based connectivity to the Internet and to other vehicles either directly or indirectly. In addition, a vehicle in IoV is envisioned as a multi-communication model, enabling the interactions between intra-vehicle components, vehicles and vehicles, vehicles and road, and vehicles and people. IoV enables the acquistion and processing of large amount of data from versatile geographical areas via intelligent vehicles computing platforms to offer various categories of services for road safety and other services to drivers and passengers. There are many unprecedented challenges to realize IoV. A typical challenge is the big data processing and storage in IoV due to huge number of connected vehicles. Personal cloud and mobile cloud computing are envisioned to play important roles in dealing with the big data. The seamless integration of the social context into IoV is a promising approach as well as an important question to achieve green transport. In addition, the wide penetration of electrical vehicles in the near future will demand a very careful consideration on the intelligent interactions between IoV and the smart grid. Here, the interactions are not limited to the communications and computation, but the power load scheduling within the demand response management framework in the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) network. All these issues are being studied in academics, industries, and standardization organizations. This special issue is seeking original contributions on IoV, sharing the research efforts and deployment challenges in this area and discussing IoV challenges, key enabling techniques, platforms and field trails. It will enable preventive care, clinic-centric to patient-centered practice by applying diverse Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in sensors, computing, networking and communication, and can allow the individuals to participate in their own care. Future SCH will be realized by providing rich medical information to each individual through replacing infrequent, clinic-based measurements with unobtrusive, continuous sensing, monitoring and assessment. The development of SCH will play a key role in the modern society to meet the broad goals of medical applications. However, significant challenges still remain in the area. For example, lack of medical baseline data for each particular individual. The IoT technology such as continuous sensing mobile communication can be employed to create individualized baselines. The theme of the special issue (SI) is especially focused on the two major aspects of IoT for SCH: (1) monitoring and assisting individuals utilizing smart systems including sensors, devices, and robotics, (2) an interoperable digital health information infrastructure to increase medical/health information availability and use. The outputs of SCH with IoT could significantly improve a person's outcomes and quality of life. Findings from the SI will provide support for enabling IoT to move the focus from disease to health and wellbeing at the individual, system, and organizational level in many SCH applications. This new mobile sensor network formed by mobile devices provides a new horizon for ubiquitous sensing at a low cost. Under the new paradigm of mobile ubiquitous sensing, each mobile device is held by an individual. The underlying social tie among individuals will play an important role in the mobile sensing process. It is, therefore, of great interest to study the mobile ubiquitous sensing from the perspective of social networks. This issue has not received much attention though the traditional way of ubiquitous sensing has, instead, been extensively investigated. The IoT will improve society and quality of life, but making this vision a reality requires interdisciplinary efforts in a range of scientific domains. Specifically, enabling the design, implementation, validation, and real-world use of IoT software requires that we embrace diverse contributions in coherent and practical development frameworks, possibly based on current and future standards. This special issue seeks contributions about recent or ongoing research efforts, experience reports, and success stories in enabling an effective development of IoT software out of the individual building blocks available in different communities. Topics of interest include: - design and modeling approaches and methodologies for IoT software; - programming abstractions and languages expressly conceived for the IoT; - development techniques for IoT software appropriate for different hardware; - platforms, from tiny sensors to the enterprise level; - approaches for composing and interoperating existing IoT functionality; - cross-layer IoT software architectures; - standards for developing IoT software; and - real-world deployments and experiences in building IoT systems. Submission Guidelines: All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words, focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IEEE Internet Computing international readership: primarily practicing engineers and academics who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens familiarity with current topics.
