No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. However, many emerging WSN applications such as plant automation and control, smart cities or health care applications require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network. In some scenarios, data even has to travel through the sensor network and the Internet to reach the destination. In this situation the overall system spanning the Internet and sensor networks must provide together the required performance characteristics. Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a WSN with performance guarantees. Thus, the commercial success of wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this particular problem is understood and solved. The PWSN workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners designing and deploying sensor networks that have to meet specific performance targets. RITMAN workshop series aims to provide researchers and developers with a forum for the purpose of stimulating discussions and collaborations on missing ICT and novel applications that can enhance preparedness and resiliency against disasters, especially events of unforeseen sizes and severity. In mobile wearable communications, wearable devices communicate with each other in a Peer-to-Peer fashion or client-server fashion and also communicate with aggregation points (e.g. smartphones, tablet devices and gateways nodes). Wearable devices are expected to integrate multiple radio technologies for multiple applications needs with small power consumption and low transmission delays. These devices can hence collect, interpret, transmit and exchange data among supporting components, other wearable devices and the Internet. Data are not limited to people's personal biomedical data but they also include human-centric social and context data. The success of mobile wearable communications depends on communication and networking architectures that support efficient and secure end-to-end information flows. A key design consideration of future wearable devices is to ubiquitously connect to smart phones or Internet with very-low energy consumption. Radio propagation and accordingly channel models may be vastly different from those in existing wireless technologies. A huge number of connected wearable devices require novel big data processing algorithms, efficient storage solutions, cloud-assisted infrastructures, and spectrum-efficient communications technologies. Notably, these popular pocket-sized gadgets are embedded with a set of versatilesensors, which could provide abundant data about individuals, human society and environments. This new mobile sensor network formed by mobile devices provides a new horizon for ubiquitous sensing at a low cost. Under the new paradigm of mobile ubiquitous sensing, each mobile device is held by an individual. The underlying social tie among individuals will play an important role in the mobile sensing process. It is, therefore, of great interest to study the mobileubiquitous sensing from the perspective of social networks. This issue has not received much attention though the traditional way of ubiquitous sensing has, instead, been extensively investigated. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks. Thus, it allows for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. When human interaction is absent from the system dynamics, the vision is also referred to as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grids, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, and it is strongly expected that new applications will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges for the widespread use of IoT/M2M technologies are: 1. Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (future) Internet. 2. The creation of value-added services, especially open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application, and implementation of the IoT/M2M concepts: Technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate “Big brother scenario”. Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0. As a result, the IEEE VTS society decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful 2007 (Baltimore), 2008 (Calgary), 2010 (Taipei), 2011 (San Francisco) and 2013 (Dresden) editions, the sixth IEEE WiVEC symposium will be co-located with the 80th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2014 Fall conference. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVEC and VTC events. All accepted and presented papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the conference proceedings published by the IEEE and will be included in the IEEE Xplore digital library.
