Aims and Scope: ============== Wireless Sensor Networks are nowadays an extended engineering technology for many markets due to the great amount of their possibilities in collecting data from complex environments and processing them for different purposes. Nevertheless, this interest is not enough to apply this kind of networks as trustworthy solution for many real-world environments, such as industrial processes and critical infrastructures, where high reliability is required, together with other related key aspects as energy, security and efficiency. Many companies could overcome their reluctances if economic, reliable and easily deployed solutions are provided in this field. In this scenario, the heuristics and computational intelligence play an important role to solve many involved optimization problems, doing necessary the research on advanced solutions that result in a successful product. In this sense, there are many challenges, trends and open possibilities in this area that deserve to be known. In this special issue, we seek original, high quality articles, clearly focused on theoretical or practical aspects of the heuristics and mathematical optimization methods for obtaining reliable and efficient wireless sensor networks, including but not limited to the topics shown below. Topics of Interest: ================== The topics related to heuristics for reliable and efficient Wireless Sensor Networks deployments that are relevant to this special issue include but are not limited to: * Energy minimization aspects: network lifetime and power savings. * Efficient networks deployments. * Heuristics and computational intelligence applied for solving optimization problems. * Multiobjective optimization problems. * Fault tolerance and quality of service. * Robust routing algorithms, network protocols and operating systems. * Security and privacy aspects of the communications. * Microprocessors, circuits, and embedded applications. * Application cases, user studies and experiences. Papers must be tailored to the problem of the wireless sensor networks and explicitly consider heuristics and mathematical optimization methods. Delay constraints, scaling laws, parameter estimation (e.g., in massive MIMO networks), interference management and modeling techniques, and distributed implementations are some of the challenging aspects to be researched for next-generation wireless networks. This calls for creative cross-disciplinary methods to analyze, model, understand, and design algorithms for future wireless networks, which will be characterized by denser and heterogeneous deployments. Recently, there have been several fruitful insights and approaches inspired from the areas of physics and mathematics, including statistical mechanics, elementary particle physics, algebraic and stochastic geometry, machine learning, electrostatics, game theory, and random matrix theory, among others. The data contributed from multiple participants can be combined to build a spatiotemporal view of the phenomenon of interest and also to extract important community statistics. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones and the high density of people in metropolitan areas, participatory sensing can achieve an unprecedented level of coverage in both space and time for observing events of interest in urban spaces. The Participatory Sensing and Crowdsourcing symposium at ISSNIP 2014 is designed to attract diverse participation from researchers and practitioners working at the leading edge in participatory sensing and crowdsourcing technologies. This necessarily covers a broad spectrum of topics, representative of the cross-cutting nature of the area -- from novel applications, to making sense of large-scale sensor data, to human computer interaction, to practical experiments. In addition to currently used underlying networks and protocols, new wired/wireless networks and protocols are planned to be deployed for different components/applications of the Smart Grid. Based on the data requirements of the applications, new challenges have arisen at the network layer of the protocol stack with respect to routing and data forwarding. Smart Grid is expected to be a multi-tier network supported by a hybrid mesh of different communications technologies to provide efficient and reliable access to grid components in diverse environments. Mainly, there will be three components of this multi-tier network which can be deploying a variety of communications networks. These networks are known as Home Area Network (HAN)/ Field Area Networks (FAN), Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Recent research on Smart Grid mostly focused on the security and privacy aspects of its applications. While some of the current routing protocols designed for wireless networks can be partially used in some of the Smart Grid networks, unique characteristics of Smart Grid applications as well as the large-scale size of the infrastructure necessitates new research at the network layer. In particular, there are several key issues need to be addressed in order to support network interconnectivity across the Smart Grid communication infrastructure that consists of HANs, NANs and WANs. For instance, scalability is an issue if a wireless infrastructure is to be used given that current wireless networking protocols are geared for small-size networks. In this respect, employment of power-line communications requires careful adaptation of the current routing protocols to address interference issues on power-lines. Another important issue is security since Smart Grid will consist of multiple-interconnected networks with diverse underlying communication technology, ownership and management. The availability and reliability of the Smart Grid as well as certain privacy information such as power usage data from each household need to be protected en route to the destination. Furthermore, the communication infrastructure will require status monitoring, fault detection, isolation, and recovery that pertain to rerouting. Finally, the ability to uniquely identify elements in the network and routing capabilities to all network end points for a wide range of applications with different quality of service (QoS) requirements will need to be addressed. The goal of this special issue is to collect papers in the area of routing in several networks of Smart Grid with different goals, characteristics and limitations. We solicit papers which will address routing challenges that are unique to Smart Grid and address major issues such as security, privacy, reliability, QoS, interference and scalability which pertain to Smart Grid applications. In particular, the topics of interest include but are not limited to - Scalable routing protocols for NANs and FANs - Efficient routing protocols in HANs - Novel routing protocols in powerline communications - Adaptation of existing routing protocols for powerline communications - QoS routing on NANs for Demand Response and WASA (Wide Area Situational Awareness) applications - Secure routing protocols in HANs and NANs - Reliable routing in lossy environments - User privacy and routing trade-offs in HANs and NANs - QoS and security tradeoffs in routing HANs and NANs - Interoperability, standardization and node heterogeinty in routing across HANs, NANs and WANs - Node placement and routing performance issues - Routing protocols for fault-detection and recovery - Data aggregation and routing - Cross-layer routing via multiple channels and MIMO - Routing experiences in testbeds and real-life applications - Support for aggregation and disaggregation of Smart Grid data in support for temporal and spatial visibility - In-network processing and sharing of distributed generation and renewable energy source and its communications infrastructure - Routing support for bad data detection - Interference and routing interrelations and techniques to mitigate the performance Degradations - Routing techniques to deal with massive data from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and smart meters Submission Format and Guideline All submitted papers must be clearly written in excellent English and contain only original work, which has not been published by or is currently under review for any other journal or conference. In traditional sensing techniques such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), distributed sensors are leveraged to acquire real world conditions. However, static sensing is affected by several conditions, such as insufficient node coverage, high installation/maintenance cost, and lack of scalability. Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) presents a new sensing paradigm based on the power of various mobile devices/objects (e.g., smartphones, wearable devices, sensor-equipped vehicles, etc.). The sheer number of mobile device users and their inherent mobility enables a new and fast-growing sensing paradigm: the ability to acquire local knowledge through sensor-enhanced mobile devices ®C e.g., location, personal and surrounding context, noise level, traffic conditions, and in the future more specialized information such as pollution ®C and the possibility to share this knowledge within the social sphere, practitioners, health care providers, and utility providers such as municipalities for example. The information collected by the mobile devices on the ground combined with the support of the cloud where data fusion takes place, make mobile sensing a versatile platform that can often replace static sensing infrastructures, and enabling a broad range of applications from urban dynamic mining, public safety, environment monitoring, just to name a few. Numerous and unique research challenges arise from the mobile crowd sensing paradigm ranging from participatory and opportunistic data collection, proper incentive mechanisms, transient network communication, and big data processing. By having human participation in the loop, several other issues regarding to the privacy and security of data (e.g., sensitive information such as human voice, location may be revealed), quality/trust of the data contributed (e.g., there might be fake or malicious nodes involved) should also be addressed. This feature topic issue provides the opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and application developers to review and discuss the state-of-the-art and trends of MCS techniques and applications or propose new solutions. In the light of the above, the main purpose of this feature topic on Mobile Crowd Sensing is threefold: -to promote unprecedented approaches and techniques in participatory and opportunistic data collection, communication, analysis, and visualization; -to identify open issues which remain a challenge towards the convergence of information and communication technologies, privacy protection methods, social and psychological theories in MCS; -to exploit novel application areas and demonstrate the benefits of MCS in contrast with more traditional static sensing approaches. The coupling between such objects and a worldwide standard-based communication infrastructure constitutes the Internet of Things (IoT) and is characterized by machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The IoT enables a detailed characterization of the physical environment, as well as a rich set of interactions with the physical world. As such, the IoT has the potential to revolutionize pervasive computing and its applications. The overall goal of the Pervasive Health Conference is to take a multidisciplinary approach to Pervasive Healthcare Technology research and development. The Pervasive Healthcare Community is addressing a broad scope of research topics and concerns: * identify and understand problems from a technological, social, and medical perspective (with a particular emphasis on understanding and supporting patient needs); * design, implementation, and evaluation of supporting hardware and software infrastructures, algorithms, and applications; and * organisational strategies that facilitate integration of Pervasive Healthcare Technology into the healthcare enterprise. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. *Short Papers and Posters* (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. Emphasis will be placed on the interplay between social and mobile wireless networks, aiming at identifying commonalities and complementarities between them, with the final objective of highlighting approaches, properties and features that can be used in order to simultaneously improve their design and operation. Such interplay between social and mobile wireless networks has been lately addressed in the field of Complex Network Analysis (CNA), and DySON, aspires to receive and present the highest quality contributions regarding analysis, control and optimization from the perspective of CNA, thus achieving diversity of application domains (mobile/online social and wireless networks) and promoting the most interesting interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary analytical methodologies. The workshop will be centered both on formal methods, as well as on noteworthy technical contributions of more practical flavor. Concepts and knowledge from several fields need to be jointly considered to address the corresponding challenges, while opening new frontiers and opportunities in relevant research. CNA and utility maximization already applied in the field of complex networks and socio-aware information networks exhibiting the tight interplay between wireless and social networks, along with the design of communication protocols and respective algorithms are just few indicative examples. Furthermore, WBANs are envisioned to transform the health industry by significantly reducing health care costs and providing independence and freedom to the elderly and disabled. In parallel to applications in health, WBANs have a diverse range of applications in a number of fields, such as sport, entertainment and social networking. This workshop aims to bring together leading researchers in the area of Wireless Body Area Networking (WBAN) to present cutting edge research and developments with respect to WBAN challenges. The workshop will have two major objectives: The first objective is to present current state-of-art in terms of the development of real test-bed and devices for various scenarios in WBANs. This increasing trend has urged mobile operators to examine new ways for improving their coverage and boosting their network capacities. A promising approach to this challenge is the dense deployment of short range and low power base stations in conjunction with the macrocellular network, as well as relays, distributed antennas and radio remote heads. However, the CAPital and OPerating EXpenditures (CAPEX and OPEX) of such heterogeneous networks increase with the increasing number of nodes. The solution to this problem is the deployment of Self-Organizing NETworks (SONETs). SONETs represent a novel paradigm based on the deployment of networks with self-organized functionalities. There are significant technical problems that need to be addressed for the successful deployment and operation of SONETs. In particular, time-, frequency- and spatial-domain interference management is a fundamental issue. To deal with increasing peak data demands, SONETs design should be self-organized based on interference/load/congestion levels, dynamically adapting their transmissions via smart traffic offloading strategies onto licensed/unlicensed bands. The IEEE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SELF-ORGANIZING NETWORKS (*SONETs*) will offer an excellent opportunity for academic and industrial researchers for spreading and sharing the latest results and understandings for rendering wireless networks more efficient in terms of capacity, coverage, Quality-of-Service performance and energy consumption.
