The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems holistically. Multimedia systems permeate many aspects of our daily life, and are steadily developed further. MMSys is a venue for researchers who explore: - Complete multimedia systems that provide a new kind of multimedia experience or systems whose overall performance improves the state-of-the-art through new research results in one of more components, or - Enhancements to one or more system components that provide a documented improvement over the state-of-the-art for handling continuous media or time-dependent services. Such individual system components include: - Operating systems - Distributed architectures and protocol enhancements - Domain languages, development tools and abstraction layers - Using new architectures or computing resources for multimedia - New or improved I/O architectures or I/O devices, innovative uses and algorithms for their operation - Representation of continuous or time-dependent media - Metrics, measures and measurement tools to assess performance This touches aspects of many hot topics: DASH, games, virtual environments, augmented reality, 3D video, immersive systems, telepresence, multi- and many-core, GPGPUs, mobile streaming, P2P, Clouds, cyber-physical systems – explore the connections on http://www.mmsys.org All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the technical program committee. Full papers will be evaluated for their scientific quality. Accepted papers must reach a high scientific standard and document unpublished research. Best papers' authors will be invited to submit a modified version of their contribution to the ACM TOMCCAP (Transaction on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications) journal. Student travel grants are available for a limited number of full-time student participants attending the conference. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be between 6 and 12 pages long (in PDF format) prepared in the ACM style and written in English. The unusual length of MMSys papers is meant to enable authors to present entire multimedia systems or present research work that builds on considerable amounts of earlier work in a self-contained manner. MMSys papers are published in the ACM Digital Library; they are available for just as long as journal papers and authors should not feel compelled by space limitations to publish extended works on top of an MMSys paper. Authors who submit very specific, detailed research work that does not require such brevity are encouraged to use less than 12 pages. The context is the information characterizing the situation of an entity and providing information about the present status of people, places, things and devices in the environment. An entity is a person, device, place, or object relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, such as location, time, activities, and services. Context awareness allows for customization or creation of the application to match the preferences of the individual user, based on current context such as enterprise environment or home network. > A first area of interest concerns the Person Context Awareness. The recent emergence of the so-called social networks, the widespread presence of smartphones equipped by heterogeneous sensors, such as GPS receivers, accelerometers, compasses, microphones and cameras, and the availability of geo-referenced information enable analysis of new context definitions that may concern individual, social, and urban scenarios. Indeed, recently, the available information may include mobility patterns of people and also physical activities (movements), physical status, and emotional conditions. This information is often acquired and shared, in real time, by users. Allowing the reliable extraction and sharing of that information is a fundamental research issue with important applications. It could improve the experience of individual, communities, organizations, and societies by adapting context to the environment (home, hospitals, campuses, offices, etc.). > Another area in this field deals with the Object Context Awareness. Context awareness may be implemented using quite different aspects under different environments, conditions, and layers, such as layered context-aware architecture for middleware, context awareness for connecting entities of network components, and infrastructure (Internet protocol, handoff management, sensing, network requirements, network controls and network implementation). > This feature topic’s scope will include both computing and communications networks, especially mobile computing networks. Embedded in a beautiful, unspoiled natural landscape the former residence of counts, dukes and grand dukes is now home to 160,000 people and a vibrant, modern city - a university city with 4 universities and more than 20,000 students. Going to Oldenburg is easy: Bremen airport is only 45 minutes away and is just one hop from the major international airport hubs Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris. Other major airports in easy reach are in Hamburg, Hanover and Münster/Osnabrück. SUBMISSIONS and PUBLICATION The conference invites the submission of original work through the Confy paper submission system in one or more of the following formats: full and short papers, workshops, posters, interactive demonstrations. Pervasive Health 2014 will accept submissions in the following categories: Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. Short Papers and Posters (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference. Poster category combines submissions reporting on the progress of ongoing research and insights into the lessons learned from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. Medical Perspective Abstracts (1-2 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in traditional medicine whose results are interesting to Pervasive Health audience. The paper should make explicit how the work offers unique and substantial contribution beyond what has already been published or submitted. In this context, there is a critical need for new ways of reducing energy consumption of communication systems if the current trajectory of traffic growth and supporting anywhere/anytime/anything access is to continue unabated. Energy costs are significant in a broad range of communications networks ranging from data center networks (where network equipment consume about 15% of the overall energy used) to cellular networks (where energy use of base stations amounts to around 70% of the t! otal). The need for ‘greener’ communications technologies has been recognized by the research community as demonstrated by the significant research efforts in this area during the last years. However, many challenges still remain to be addressed. The special issue of Computer Networks on Green Communications will focus on recent research results in the area of green communications. It will be the goal of this new Fachgespräch to again bring together talented young researchers to follow-up on the discussions. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular systems. Goals The goal of this event is to give an interdisciplinary overview on recent advances and early results in the area of vehicular inter-networking technologies and related applications. This seminar will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. The objective is to discuss recent advancements in this highly active research area, to highlight interdisciplinary challenges in the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and to share lessons learned from field trial experiences. It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4) Enabling new services. SenSys 2013 Doctoral Colloquium November 13 November 2013 (afternoon), Rome, Italy. http://sensys.acm.org/2013/doccol.html The Doctoral Colloquium (DC) of SenSys'13 is to provide a friendly, supportive, and constructive environment where PhD students can present their research-in-progress for an open discussion guided by a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least four months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a half-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by round table discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In addition to the DC presentation, the participants will be given a chance to present a poster at the poster session during the main conference. Submissions Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress and including a 100-word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. If the work is accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to the research summary by the camera-ready deadline.
