The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. Submissions must be fully anonimized, as REALWSN will apply a double-blind review process. Accepted papers will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes on Electrical Engineering series and indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar, ...). The problem of understanding and enhancing Quality nof Experience (QoE) in complex, distributed and diverse environments has been and is continuing to be the subject of intense research investigation. Considerable efforts have been devoted to assessing QoE via objective or subjective means for new and emerging multimedia services over modern fixed/mobile devices (e.g. IPTV/HDTV/3DTV, Tablet video call, 3D smartphone). As of today though we do not know how to manage and control QoE in a diverse heterogeneous environment. The variables that affect QoE are just too many and span several disciplinary areas, including multiple technologies, but also psychology and sociology factors. Despite the efforts devoted to QoE studies, managing and controlling user QoE is still an open issue. D2D communication enables two or more mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish direct local links, either in an autonomous manner to form an ad hoc network or coordinated by a base station to perform direct data transfer. The benefits of D2D communication include ubiquitous computing and communication, traffic offload from cellular networks, improved energy efficiency and coverage extension, peer-to-peer communication supporting social networks etc. However, there are many issues to be addressed before the concept of D2D communication can be implemented and commercialized. These problems include for example how to find device proximity, how to manage interference and how to control link quality, how to achieve energy efficiency for neighbor discovery and multi-hop communication establishment, etc. The main objective of this workshop is to bring together the state-of-the-art results in the field of D2D communication, including both cellular-coordinated approaches and distributed ad hoc networking solutions, and to share knowledge to trigger D2D communication from concept to reality. The topics to be addressed by this workshop include both physical layer and networking issues as well as envisaged services and applications. Topics of interest cover all aspects related to D2D communication with and without infrastructure, including results for both cellular-coordinated approaches and distributed ad hoc networking solutions from academia, industries as well as standardization bodies. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Perhaps, one of the biggest drivers for the many technological advances we see today is the need for faster and more reliable communications. Emerging applications of such faster and more reliable communications technologies include home entertainment, high-quality visual communication applications, massive multi-player gaming, and personal, body-area and sensor networking. Some of these applications will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content generation, manipulation and distribution. For example, TV content (including both non-premium and premium) can now be viewed wherever we are and on any connected device - a concept called TV Everywhere. Another example is high-definition video telephony/conferencing and collaboration over smart connected TV sets. These are all made possible by networking, software and middleware that provide ease of use, security and stunning interactivity to the consumers. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide-area communications via cellular or satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces, we see automobile functionality being extended, blurring the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking articles that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Particular topics of interest include: Scope of Contributions • Emerging wireless technologies for consumer networking • Pervasive computing and contextual systems in consumer communications • Architecture, platforms and protocols for consumer communications, networked games and virtual worlds • Middleware for networked consumer devices • Media and device adaptation • Social networking and its impact on consumer communications • Home and networked entertainment • Home networking and automation Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being all members of the communication technologies community. They should be written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. Articles should not exceed 4500 words. (humans?) emote all the time and decisions are always socially inspired. The next-generation automotive interfaces need to include the essence of social intelligence to become more effective and safer. Researchers have recently started to think about the topic of socially inspired cars and, in our comprehension, a broader discussion on the benefits and consequences of socializing cars is very likely to start in the near time. The central objective of this special issue is to provoke an active debate on the adequacy of the concept of socializing cars and the topic addressed by this special issue raises elementary questions including who can communicate what, when, how, and why? To tackle these questions we would like to invite researchers to take part in an in-depth discussion of this timely, relevant, and important field of investigation. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. Submissions must be fully anonimized, as REALWSN will apply a double-blind review process. Accepted papers will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes on Electrical Engineering series and indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar, ...). Authors of accepted papers will need to sign an IEEE copyright release form and present their paper at the conference. The incentive to protect the driver, the suppliers and the car manufacturers has been generally recognized. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners in all security related to modern and next generation automotive systems. CyCAR workshop will be colacted with ACM CCS 2013. This workshop offers an opportunity to trigger the transfer of the accumulated knowledge by the ACM CCS community to the car industry while taking into account typical automotive constraints such as interoperability, reliability, dependability, quality, resource constraints or complex supply chain. Not only this is the first time that CCS is organized in Germany (country well known for his cars), this is also the first academic conference workshop only focusing on security and dependability for cyber vehicles. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. Submissions must be fully anonimized, as REALWSN will apply a double-blind review process. Call details ============ While computing is provided by the cloud and services increasingly pervade our daily lives, dependability and security are no longer restricted to mission or safety critical applications, but rather become a cornerstone of the information society. Unfortunately, large-scale, dynamic, and heterogeneous software systems that typically run continuously, often tend to become inert, brittle, and vulnerable after a while. The key problem is that the most innovative systems and applications are the ones that also suffer most from a significant decrease in dependability and security when compared to traditional critical systems, where dependability and security are fairly well understood as complementary concepts and a variety of proven methods and techniques is available today. In accordance with Laprie we call this effect the dependability gap, which is widened in front of us between demand and supply of dependability, and we can see this trend further fueled by the demand for resource awareness, green computing, and increasing cost pressure. Among technical factors of dependability, software development methods, tools, and techniques contribute to dependability, as defects in software products and services may lead to failure and also provide typical access for malicious attacks. In addition, there is a wide variety of fault and intrusion tolerance techniques available, including persistence provided by databases, redundancy and replication, group communication, transaction monitors, reliable middleware, cloud infrastructures, fragmentation-redundancy-scattering, and trustworthy service-oriented architectures with explicit control of quality of service properties and service level agreements. Furthermore, adaptiveness is envisaged in order to react to observed, or act upon expected changes of the system itself, the context/environment (e.g., resource variability or failure/threat scenarios) or users' needs and expectations. Provided without explicit user intervention, this is also termed autonomous behavior or self-properties, and often involves monitoring, diagnosis (analysis, interpretation), and reconfiguration (repair). In particular, adaptation is also a means to achieve dependability and security in a computing infrastructure with dynamically varying structure and properties. We apologize for any cross-postings. 2nd Call for Papers SPECIAL ISSUE OF PERVASIVE AND MOBILE COMPUTING The Social Car: Socially-inspired Mechanisms for Future Mobility Services Submissions due: July 31, 2013 ************************************************************************* In the long tradition of driver-vehicle interaction, information systems have been socially ignorant ? they have not accounted for the fact that drivers? (humans?) emote all the time and decisions are always socially inspired. The next-generation automotive interfaces need to include the essence of social intelligence to become more effective and safer. Researchers have recently started to think about the topic of socially inspired cars and, in our comprehension, a broader discussion on the benefits and consequences of socializing cars is very likely to start in the near time. The central objective of this special issue is to provoke an active debate on the adequacy of the concept of socializing cars and the topic addressed by this special issue raises elementary questions including who can communicate what, when, how, and why? To tackle these questions we would like to invite researchers to take part in an in-depth discussion of this timely, relevant, and important field of investigation. This is specifically due to constrained energy and computation capability, nondeterministic sensor failures, channel impairments, node mobility, hostile and distrusted environments, and even external attackers. In all these respects, wireless sensor networks exhibit substantial vulnerability when compared to other networks. It is challenging to design a robust wireless sensor network by devising novel algorithms or developing new theories whilst introducing minimal communication overhead and energy consumption. For example, sensor nodes are often deployed in outdoor or hazardous environments. Power outage of sensors can lead to node failure and cause many serious problems. Recently, an aggressive approach has been developed that wirelessly re-charges the sensor nodes to increase the robustness of the sensor networks. The charging tasks can be performed by single or multiple mobile machines. However, the algorithmic and theoretical issues in the wireless charging problem for WSNs were not fully explored. The main focus of this special issue is devoted to deeper understanding of the algorithms and theories which are developed to build up a robust wireless sensor network. Moreover, it is to push the theoretical and practical research forward for a deeper understanding in the fundamental algorithm, modeling, and analysis techniques of robust wireless sensor networks. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: • Algorithms and theories for wireless sensor networks related to robustness issues • Performance analysis of reliable protocols for wireless sensor networks • Robust routing algorithms in wireless sensor networks • Robust topology control techniques in wireless sensor networks • Robust coverage algorithms in wireless sensor networks • Robust MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks • Robust position estimation in wireless sensor networks • Duplicate data and resource optimization in mobile wireless networks • Wireless recharging strategies in mobile wireless sensor networks • Fault-tolerant clustering and cooperative strategies in wireless sensor networks • Robust boundary detection algorithms in wireless sensor networks Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijdsn/guideline.
