IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, collaborative objects and the Internet of Things, machine learning, mobile and social sensing, and embedded systems design. Of special interest are contributions at the confluence of a multiple of these areas. In addition to regular research papers, in IPSN 2014, we also encourage submissions of Challenge Papers that lay out visions and future challenges in the field of information processing in sensor networks. Challenge papers are up to 6 page long and the title should start with “Challenge: … ” These submissions are reviewed based on the novelty of the concepts and potential of impacting the field. The conference features two submission tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. Authors are encouraged to read the foci of the tracks and make indications in the submission site accordingly. However, submission tracks are for review preference only. The program committees work together in the review process. Topics: The IP track focuses on algorithms, theory, and systems for information processing using networks of embedded, human-in-the-loop, or social sensors. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PUBLICATION AND INDEXING Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 32 and 43. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral presentation at the workshop is strictly required. The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types. An entity is a person, device, place, or object relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, such as location, time, activities, and services. Context awareness allows for customization or creation of the application to match the preferences of the individual user, based on current context such as enterprise environment or home network. > A first area of interest concerns the Person Context Awareness. The recent emergence of the so-called social networks, the widespread presence of smartphones equipped by heterogeneous sensors, such as GPS receivers, accelerometers, compasses, microphones and cameras, and the availability of geo-referenced information enable analysis of new context definitions that may concern individual, social, and urban scenarios. Indeed, recently, the available information may include mobility patterns of people and also physical activities (movements), physical status, and emotional conditions. This information is often acquired and shared, in real time, by users. Allowing the reliable extraction and sharing of that information is a fundamental research issue with important applications. It could improve the experience of individual, communities, organizations, and societies by adapting context to the environment (home, hospitals, campuses, offices, etc.). > Another area in this field deals with the Object Context Awareness. The research involved in developing applications for these classes of problems lies at the intersection of several diverse disciplines, including sensing systems, signal processing, machine learning and data mining, data management, and large-scale distributed systems - for both online as well as offline analysis. †In this workshop, co-located with AMC SenSys 2013, we will include state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of extracting knowledge, by mining data from sensor networks in large-scale settings. The goal of the workshop is to establish a new research community and a venue for researchers, practitioners, and academics to present their results in these disciplines. We expect this workshop to be a long-term, continued venue for this research community, and to also lead to the setup of appropriate special issues and journals. As part of this workshop, we will include both peer-reviewed and invited papers. All accepted papers will be included in the ACM digital library. Embedded in a beautiful, unspoiled natural landscape the former residence of counts, dukes and grand dukes is now home to 160,000 people and a vibrant, modern city - a university city with 4 universities and more than 20,000 students. Going to Oldenburg is easy: Bremen airport is only 45 minutes away and is just one hop from the major international airport hubs Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris. Other major airports in easy reach are in Hamburg, Hanover and Münster/Osnabrück. SUBMISSIONS and PUBLICATION The conference invites the submission of original work through the Confy paper submission system in one or more of the following formats: full and short papers, workshops, posters, interactive demonstrations. Pervasive Health 2014 will accept submissions in the following categories: Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. Short Papers and Posters (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference. Poster category combines submissions reporting on the progress of ongoing research and insights into the lessons learned from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. Medical Perspective Abstracts (1-2 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in traditional medicine whose results are interesting to Pervasive Health audience. This track will give Pervasive Health attendees a way to learn about ongoing research initiatives, both in medicine and technology, and will provide presenters with an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable direct feedback from experts. Demos (2 pages submissions) - The demos track will showcase the latest developments and prototypes related to the topics of interest of the conference. The expected demo submissions should describe the technical details of the demo alongside its contribution to the healthcare domain. Workshop proposals (2 pages submissions) - Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to pervasive healthcare. Doctoral Colloquium (4 pages) – This event will enable doctoral students to present and reflect on their work alongside other doctoral students and a panel of experts. Submissions should include a description of work done, intended future work, alongside a specific research question or challenge that you would like to be discussed at the colloquium. Each paper will be blind, peer-reviewed by members of the Pervasive Health 2014 program committee with additional expert reviewers drawn from relevant research domains. Submissions will be evaluated based on their originality, significance of the contribution to the field, technical correctness and presentation. The paper should make explicit how the work offers unique and substantial contribution beyond what has already been published or submitted. The acceptance rate was around 30% for Pervasive Health 2011, 2012 and 2013. All accepted submissions will be published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library (pending). Authors will also be invited to submit their camera-ready papers in ACM format, to be published in ACM Digital Library (pending). For new technologies or infrastructure designs to be adopted, they must not be only based on sound engineering performance considerations but also present the right economic incentives. Recent changes in regulations of the telecommunication industry make such economic considerations even more urgent. For instance, new concerns such as network neutrality have a significant impact on the evolution of communication networks. At the same time, communication networks and networked systems support increasing economic activity based on applications and services such as cloud computing, social networks, and peer-to-peer networks. These applications pose new challenges such as the development of good pricing and incentive mechanisms to promote effective system-wide behavior. In relation to these applications, security and privacy also require consideration of economic aspects to be fully understood. The need for ‘greener’ communications technologies has been recognized by the research community as demonstrated by the significant research efforts in this area during the last years. However, many challenges still remain to be addressed. The special issue of Computer Networks on Green Communications will focus on recent research results in the area of green communications. Discussions revolved around both the state of the art and around future directions of inter-vehicle communication research, from physical layer optimizations to novel applications of vehicular networks and from microscopic evaluation metrics to problems of scale, crime, and privacy. It will be the goal of this new Fachgespräch to again bring together talented young researchers to follow-up on the discussions. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular systems. Goals The goal of this event is to give an interdisciplinary overview on recent advances and early results in the area of vehicular inter-networking technologies and related applications. This seminar will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. The objective is to discuss recent advancements in this highly active research area, to highlight interdisciplinary challenges in the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and to share lessons learned from field trial experiences. Scope of Contributions: Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (2-4 pages) presenting new research results related to the theory or practice of vehicular communications and applications. Manuscripts formatted according to IEEE conference layout should be submitted as PDF documents. Accepted contributions will be published in a technical report (thus, the copyright will remain with the authors). It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4) Enabling new services. SenSys 2013 Doctoral Colloquium November 13 November 2013 (afternoon), Rome, Italy. http://sensys.acm.org/2013/doccol.html The Doctoral Colloquium (DC) of SenSys'13 is to provide a friendly, supportive, and constructive environment where PhD students can present their research-in-progress for an open discussion guided by a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least four months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a half-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by round table discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In addition to the DC presentation, the participants will be given a chance to present a poster at the poster session during the main conference. Submissions Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress and including a 100-word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. The submission site can be found at: https://sensys2013.cs.virginia.edu/doctoralCol/index.php Research summaries will be reviewed by the chairs and panel members. If the work is accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to the research summary by the camera-ready deadline. Note that the research summaries will not be formally published, but hard copies will be made available to colloquium delegates. A prize for best student presentation will be awarded by the panel. Registration Accepted participants of the doctoral colloquium shall register with the SenSys workshop registration rate (if applicable at the student rate). The registration is free if the student also attends and has registered for the SenSys conference. Participants can also apply for SenSys travel grants.
