Such "network appliances" or "middleboxes" are a critical piece of the network infrastructure and represent, to a first-order approximation, the de-facto approach for network evolution in response to changing performance, security, and policy compliance requirements. However, most of this functionality is implemented in costly, hard-to-modify dedicated hardware, making the network difficult to evolve or adapt to changing traffic requirements. Recent work seeks to address this issue by shifting network processing from a world of dedicated hardware to one built on software-based processing running on (sometimes virtualized and shared) platforms built on commodity hardware servers, switches, and storage. This vision of "software-based" network services enables new in-network functions to be rapidly instantiated, on-demand, and at places in the network where it is most needed, without having to modify the underlying hardware. The scope of this workshop focuses both on the design of the data plane to support advanced services as well as the control plane functions necessary to manage these advanced data plane functions. In some sense, this vision is complementary to ongoing efforts in the SDN community, where the focus has largely been on the control plane and assuming a commodity data plane. While our workshop builds on the recent promise of realizing high-performance network processing on commodity hardware, many questions remain open: 1. What are the best virtualization technologies for implementing high-performance network functions? 2. What are the challenges when trying to push them to rates of 10Gb and beyond? 3. How do we provide the best possible isolation, both in terms of software isolation but also performance? 4. How do we ensure that middlebox modules from different entities running on the same platform are assigned to the available hardware in an optimal way? 5. How can we provide quick instantiation of processing (in the order of milliseconds or less)? 6. What control plane abstractions are necessary to manage such advanced and stateful services? The HotMiddlebox workshop will serve as an avenue to showcase and discuss ongoing work from both academic and industry efforts in this space and to identify key challenges and potential solutions, with the ultimate goal of providing a roadmap for practical deployment in operational networks. It is aimed at bringing together researchers from academia and industry. Internet has crossed new frontiers with access getting faster and cheaper. New applications and services are being offered – and their impact omnipresent. The Internet Society’s recent global Internet survey reveals that the Internet should be considered as a basic human birthright. On one end, we have the developed world where access is getting faster and services being developed to utilize faster access. On the other end, there are people who do not have access to the Internet at all. Some may not be able to get it due to lack of infrastructure support (which accounts to the notion of digital divide problem faced by most people in developed countries). There have been signiﬁcant initiatives to solve the problem of affordable infrastructure. Crucially, most of these approaches address infrastructural barriers without addressing economic ones. Leaving connectivity for all to be governed by market economics is a major impediment to achieving the full benefits of the Internet, and that basic Internet access should be made freely available to all due to its societal benefits. The current Internet access model which is governed by market economics makes it practically infeasible for enabling universal access especially for those with socio-economic barriers. The value chains do not reflect the technical development – as made obvious by recent debates between operators and content providers. There are both research and policy challenges to the realization of a future Internet capability that will offer appropriate access to all parts of society. The current Internet architecture is progressively reaching a saturation point in meeting increasing user's expectations and behaviors as well as progressively showing inability to efficiently respond to new technological challenges (in terms of security, scalability, mobility, availability, and manageability) but also socio-economical challenges. This widening range of requirements imposed on the Internet architecture leads to a growing collection of solutions, which each in their own right address a set of requirement while driving forward the fragmentation that ultimately stands in the way of achieving the digital inclusion vision. In contrast to the way the current Internet has evolved, the development of the next generation network will demand both collaboration and a shared vision between researchers, corporations, community groupings and governments. There can be no single uniform solution that embraces all types of user and all locations. We need an infrastructure that combines different transmission technologies, while at the same time support an increasingly diverse range of Internet applications. The research community should also encourage, identify and architect new modes of access that could increase the efficiency of the usage of existing communication resources, enhance cooperation among operators, cooperation among end users, improving access/accounting on a per service basis rather than on a per volume basis, enable “sponsoring” of access to communication as such as well as to selected services.   This workshop will address the problem of digital exclusion due to both geographical and socio-economic disparity. We would like also to pay attention to specific types of exclusion – like temporal exclusion caused by catastrophes (in terms of an earthquake or tsunami) and malicious activities. In such situations, the poorest communities suffer the most. Technologies that require an infrastructure setup may sometimes be not feasible due to cost, accessibility or availability. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Common examples of challenged networks include high delay environments such as inter-planetary networks, limited power environments such as sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, and communication in settings that lack infrastructure such as rural and remote areas, and military battlefields. Challenged networks also find application in everyday settings, when access to traditional infrastructure is restricted, expensive, overly complex, or rapidly changing. This workshop builds on the success of the seven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanis! ms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It acts as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. The conference will start with 3-4 days of hiking in the volcanic landscape of Iceland, leading up to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. Along the way, participants will get to see and experience breathtaking views over a harsh landscape and understand the challenges involved in networking in this region. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such an harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the hike, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. The WBAN consisting of a set of mobile and small intercommunicating sensors is expected to significantly impact future healthcare services. On the other hand, many other techniques such as smartphones, cloud services and social networks have been widely deployed for many mobile applications and are offering a great opportunity to extend the functionalities of WBANs. The integration of WBANs with these promising techniques for ubiquitous healthcare applications will lead to interpretation of the broad concepts of telemedicine and m-health. There are significant research challenges involving the development of protocols, platform, applications of WBANs, especially when wireless body sensors are either wearable or implanted into the human body and thus their resources and capacities are extremely limited. Many existing sensor network solutions are not applicable to WBANs. There are numerous research issues in WBANs related to interoperability, communication interference, security, mobility, energy, deployment, and costs, etc. In addition, there is a promising research trend for the integration of cloud computing with WBANs to provide ubiquitous and mobile healthcare services. Further, traditional solutions in WBANs have to be evolved with the emergence of new hardware and techniques such as smartphones and energy harvesting. For example, adopting energy harvesting techniques has led to the development of ultra-low power wireless communication and miniaturized sensors that are suited for m-health applications. New emphasis on the applications such as smart health and wellbeing will significantly speed up the wide deployment of WBANs and broaden their impact. It is a challenging task to develop more innovative health applications such as elder care, sports, military, or security. Extending the WBANs technology to new application domains can be supported by seamless and secure data communications between users, or between users and base stations with required quality of service (QoS). Therefore, it is critical to understand and develop WBANs from the perspective of applications, protocol and system. The specific focus of this special issue will be on the ubiquitous healthcare service impact and implications of emerging WBANs technologies. It is hence crucial to increase network capacity to accommodate these bandwidth consuming applications and services. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising concept to improve user experiences and resource utilization in cellular networks, both for licensed and unlicensed spectrum. It enables two mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish a direct local link and to bypass the base station or access point. D2D communication may either be network-controlled where the operator manages the switching between direct and conventional cellular links, or the direct links may be managed by the devices without operator control. D2D allows combining infrastructure-mode and ad hoc communication. Device-to-device communications may have advantages such as: 1) improved performance for devices; 2) improved spectrum reuse and system throughput; 3) offloading in cellular networks; 4) improved energy efficiency; 5) extended coverage; 6) creation of new services. It also poses new problems and challenges. A issue is how to share resources dynamically (e.g. spectrum and energy) between cellular communication and ad hoc D2D communication to accommodate larger volumes of traffic and to provide better service to users. Other challenges include: identification of services for which D2D communication is useful; radio resource allocation and resource management; self-organizing direct links; proximity-based offloading, and capacity evaluation and performance comparison. The special issue addresses research advances that enable D2D communications in cellular networks. The goal is to report on the most up-to-date contributions in this area. The conference will start with 3-4 days of hiking in the volcanic landscape of Iceland, leading up to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. Along the way, participants will get to see and experience breathtaking views over a harsh landscape and understand the challenges involved in networking in this region. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such an harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the hike, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. Scope ===== Smarter and greener environments are essential to address economic, social, and environmental challenges due to the increase in urbanization, requiring informed decisions based on Internet of Things (IoT) generated data. Rapidly, more and more devices are being added to the networks. Estimations show that by the end of 2020 there will be 50 billion connected devices to the IoT world-wide. Almost any kind of these devices will be allowed to seamlessly integrate into a large-scale Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication environment. In contrast to human-to-human and human-to-machine communication (which mainly involves multimedia sessions, web browsing, and remote control), M2M provides the opportunity of deploying completely new services. In M2M, smart devices are connected through the networks to novel service platforms in a self-controlled system; however, the current communication networks still being designed to support human-to-human communication, focus on the optimization of the communication between devices under direct human control. Recognizing the need for reliable network infrastructures, various standards developing organizations have recently promoted several standardization activities in the M2M domain, which need continuous research input. Open M2M platforms are being developed to implement middleware aiming to provide services for heterogeneous requirements, thus avoiding vendor-locking stove-pipe solutions, acting as a horizontal convergence layer supporting multiple vertical application domains such as transport and logistics, utilities, automotive, eHealth, etc. which may be deployed independently or as part of a common platform. M2MCIP provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to address and discuss challenges and proposed solutions to the open and upcoming issues in M2M, as state-of-the-art solutions and work in progress. This concept includes the well-known ideas of self-configuration, self-management, self-healing, but it pushes these features even farther until including the concept of node mutation and evolution. The "stemness" term recalls the peculiarity of a biological stem cell, able to evolve and specialize towards a specialized cell. The main difference with the biological counterpart and the our concept of stemness lies on the reversibility of the process. Each node is able to opportunistically configure its-self based on the specific task that needs to be accomplished. Strictly related to the stemness concept is not only selfness property of the system that come out in a straightforward way but also swarm concept. In fact, devices evolve and organize to each other by accomplishing simple sub-task, each of one is part of a bigger task.
