Networked games have grown in popularity over the past decade, catalyzed by the spread of mobile and residential Internet connections with high capacities and low latencies that encourage game developers to incorporate networked features into their products. Although networked games have demonstrated commercial, artistic, and technical successes, challenges and opportunities remain as computer technologies continue to grow. Powerful, inexpensive PCs and game consoles provide the potential for immersive, multiplayer game play, but must still overcome the geographic dispersion of gamers to be fun. Cloud computing promises new models for game computation, with the added challenge of delivering interactive game content to players. Cheap, always-connected smartphones and tablets provide a new frontier for game development, but with the connectivity and security challenges that come with mobile, wireless networks. Underneath all this is the challenge of connecting clients and servers over shared and unpredictably congested IP networks. This special issue aims to bring together new research results from a variety of backgrounds that address these core challenges. Topics of interest include networked game-related work in: - scalability, cloud support, and game system architectures; - performance evaluation and optimization; - effective visualization on Internet infrastructures; - efficient message distribution and network protocol design; - latency issues and lag compensation techniques; - operating system enhancements, service platforms, and middleware; - multiplayer usability, quality of experience, and user behavior studies; - mobile games; - security and cheat detection and prevention; and - social networking in multiplayer games. Editors' note: We encourage submissions from both academic and industrial practitioners, especially as they pertain to open source tools or products, but content must have technical merit, not be an advertisement. Submission Guidelines All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words, focused on Internet technologies and implementations. They are evolved to complex computer systems that are highly connected while still having to deal with automotive constraints and requirements such as safety, reliability, dependability, quality, and complex supply chain. Especially the increasing connectivity and the recent integration of smart devices (e.g., smartphones) and cloud services as well as the emerging applications give rise to new security and privacy issues. The incentive to protect the driver, the suppliers and the car manufacturers has been generally recognized. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners in all security related to modern and next generation automotive systems. CyCAR workshop will be colacted with ACM CCS 2013. This workshop offers an opportunity to trigger the transfer of the accumulated knowledge by the ACM CCS community to the car industry while taking into account typical automotive constraints such as interoperability, reliability, dependability, quality, resource constraints or complex supply chain. Not only this is the first time that CCS is organized in Germany (country well known for his cars), this is also the first academic conference workshop only focusing on security and dependability for cyber vehicles. The last ARO workshop (http://www.cybervehicle.umd.edu/[1]) has demonstrated that there is still a lot of security/privacy and dependability issues that need to be resolved, especially with the emergence of vehicles that are fully connected to theirs surrounding objects. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic and automotive industry researchers to discuss, identify and address the challenges related to achieving secure, dependable and privacy-preserving cybervehicle systems. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. Motivated by further examining recent advances in this field and promoting the optimization of the existing methodologies and/or approaches, as well as presenting efficient high performance techniques for extending the survivability of such systems, both in terms of performance and reliability, we are interested in organizing this workshop with the following primary objectives: § Explore new and innovative ideas and improvements of opportunistic networks that can affect the overall performance of the system; § Explore the impact of wireless mobility and resource management in order to offer high performance and resource availability in today¹s computing systems. The workshop also aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and applications, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource management field, and in a research pathway in order to present the various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing. For instance, new concerns such as network neutrality have a significant impact on the evolution of communication networks. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. Submissions must be fully anonimized, as REALWSN will apply a double-blind review process. Accepted papers will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes on Electrical Engineering series and indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar, ...). The problem of understanding and enhancing Quality nof Experience (QoE) in complex, distributed and diverse environments has been and is continuing to be the subject of intense research investigation. Considerable efforts have been devoted to assessing QoE via objective or subjective means for new and emerging multimedia services over modern fixed/mobile devices (e.g. IPTV/HDTV/3DTV, Tablet video call, 3D smartphone). As of today though we do not know how to manage and control QoE in a diverse heterogeneous environment. The variables that affect QoE are just too many and span several disciplinary areas, including multiple technologies, but also psychology and sociology factors. Despite the efforts devoted to QoE studies, managing and controlling user QoE is still an open issue. D2D communication enables two or more mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish direct local links, either in an autonomous manner to form an ad hoc network or coordinated by a base station to perform direct data transfer. The benefits of D2D communication include ubiquitous computing and communication, traffic offload from cellular networks, improved energy efficiency and coverage extension, peer-to-peer communication supporting social networks etc. However, there are many issues to be addressed before the concept of D2D communication can be implemented and commercialized. These problems include for example how to find device proximity, how to manage interference and how to control link quality, how to achieve energy efficiency for neighbor discovery and multi-hop communication establishment, etc. The main objective of this workshop is to bring together the state-of-the-art results in the field of D2D communication, including both cellular-coordinated approaches and distributed ad hoc networking solutions, and to share knowledge to trigger D2D communication from concept to reality. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Perhaps, one of the biggest drivers for the many technological advances we see today is the need for faster and more reliable communications. Emerging applications of such faster and more reliable communications technologies include home entertainment, high-quality visual communication applications, massive multi-player gaming, and personal, body-area and sensor networking. Some of these applications will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content generation, manipulation and distribution. For example, TV content (including both non-premium and premium) can now be viewed wherever we are and on any connected device - a concept called TV Everywhere. Another example is high-definition video telephony/conferencing and collaboration over smart connected TV sets. These are all made possible by networking, software and middleware that provide ease of use, security and stunning interactivity to the consumers. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide-area communications via cellular or satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces, we see automobile functionality being extended, blurring the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking articles that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Particular topics of interest include: Scope of Contributions • Emerging wireless technologies for consumer networking • Pervasive computing and contextual systems in consumer communications • Architecture, platforms and protocols for consumer communications, networked games and virtual worlds • Middleware for networked consumer devices • Media and device adaptation • Social networking and its impact on consumer communications • Home and networked entertainment • Home networking and automation Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being all members of the communication technologies community. The next-generation automotive interfaces need to include the essence of social intelligence to become more effective and safer. Researchers have recently started to think about the topic of socially inspired cars and, in our comprehension, a broader discussion on the benefits and consequences of socializing cars is very likely to start in the near time. Autonome Sensorknoten nehmen dabei Parameter der Umwelt durch Sensoren wahr und können diese durch Aktoren beeinflussen. Viele solcher autonomen und ressourcenbeschränkten Knoten kooperieren dabei mittels drahtloser Kommunikation. Die Eigenschaften dieser Knoten und Netze implizieren eine Vielzahl von neuartigen Herausforderungen, die sich in einer regen Forschungsaktivität widerspiegeln. Ziel dieser Reihe von Fachgesprächen ist es, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus Hochschule und Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem informellen Gedankenaustausch zu geben und die Kooperation in diesem multidisziplinären Forschungsbereich zu verstärken. *Beiträge* Im Rahmen des Fachgesprächs wird die Diskussion gegenüber der Vortragspräsentation im Vordergrund stehen. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. Submissions must be fully anonimized, as REALWSN will apply a double-blind review process. Accepted papers will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes on Electrical Engineering series and indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar, ...). All topics pertaining to real-world wireless sensor networks and modern forms of sensing are of interest, including but not limited to: * Experiences with real-world deployments * Mining real-world sensor network data * Sensor systems leveraging smart phones (crowd sensing) * Sensors systems involving Internet of Things (IoT), RFIDs, robots * Experimental validation/refutation of previous simulation results obtained by others * Real-world performance of self-organization and self-management * Debugging, testing, validation, and management * Deployment and configuration * Applications in medicine, industry, science, environmental monitoring * Security and trust * Scalability in practice * Development and prototyping platforms * Operating systems, sensor network programming paradigms, and languages * Middleware for heterogeneous networks * Real-time and dependability issues * Hardware support for real-world sensor networks * Robustness at all levels: communication, software, hardware * Energy efficient protocols * Hardware and software methods for energy measurement and profiling Important dates: * Electronic submissions due: June 28th, 2013 (extended) * Notification of acceptance: August 8th, 2013 * Camera-ready copy due: August 30th, 2013 * Workshop: 19-20 September 2013 We will organize a poster and demo session as well.
