Moreover, theoretical advances on wireless network communications, such as cooperative relay networks, network coding, constructive use of interference, and interference alignment, promise to have significant impact on practical wireless networks in the following years. To better understand the nature of these advances, it is important to evaluate these ideas in real-world environments via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. WiNMee 2013 is the ninth edition in the International Workshop on Wireless Network Measurements series that began in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. However, moving streams of data between the parallel path of the internal router and external serial-channel links between them consumes additional power. One challenge is encoding the data and minimise the switching activity of data in the serial links in order to reduce the additional power dissipation; while under real-time and minimal hardware constraints. Extending the EHW principle to architectural adaptation, the authors study the capability of evolvable hardware classifiers to adapt to intentional run-time fluctuations in the available resources, i.e., chip area, in this work. To that end, the authors leverage the Functional Unit Row (FUR) architecture, a coarse-grained reconfigurable classifier, and apply it to two medical benchmarks, the Pima and Thyroid data sets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. Tyrrell (Department of Electronics, University of York, York, UK) Transport triggered architectures are used for implementing bio-inspired systems due to their simplicity, modularity and fault-tolerance. However, producing efficient, optimised machine code for such architectures is extremely difficult, since computational complexity has moved from the hardware-level to the software-level. Presented is the application of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) to the evolution of machine code for a simple implementation of transport triggered architecture. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by evolving machine code for a 4-bit multiplier with three different levels of parallelism. The results show that 100% successful solutions were found by CGP and by further optimising the size of the solutions, it’s possible to find efficient implementations of the 4-bit multiplier. Further analysis of the solutions showed that use of loops within the CGP function set could be beneficial and was demonstrated by repeating the earlier 4-bit multiplier experiment with the addition of a loop function. Nashed (Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma, Parma, Italy) and Stefano Cagnoni (Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma, Parma, Italy) The authors formulate the body pose estimation as a multi-dimensional nonlinear optimization problem, suitable to be approximately solved by a meta-heuristic, specifically, the particle swarm optimization (PSO). Starting from multi-view video sequences acquired in a studio environment, a full skeletal configuration of the human body is retrieved. They use a generic subdivision-surface body model in 3-D to generate solutions for the optimization problem. PSO then looks for the best match between the silhouettes generated by the projection of the model in a candidate pose and the silhouettes extracted from the original video sequence. The optimization method, in this case PSO, is run in parallel on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and is implemented in Cuda-C™ on the nVidia CUDA™ architecture. Such wireless health monitoring platforms aim to continuously monitor mobile patients needing permanent surveillance. However, to set up such platforms several issues along the communication chain should be resolved. The acquisition of medical information via a set of wireless sensors embedded in the patient himself, the treatment and use of this information either by a local contractor equipment or offset after transfer in 3G and/or WiFi connection to a data server, the access to the collected data, ...etc. are some of the important challenges that we have to consider. Each level represents a fairly complex subsystem with a local hierarchy employed to ensure efficiency, portability, security, and reduced cost. MobileHealth'2013 workshop aims to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas and would be an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective pervasive wireless healthcare systems. The workshop will include presentations of theoretical and experimental achievements, innovative wireless systems, prototyping efforts, case studies and advances in technology related to wireless healthcare networking and systems. This announcement solicits technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. It is important to collect correct raw data in an efficient way; but more important is to analyze and mine the raw data to abstract more valuable information such as correlations among things and services to provide web of things or Internet of services. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Such a vision is also becoming known under the name of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), where the absence of human interaction in the system dynamics is further stressed. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges are: i) the definition of architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (Future) Internet; and ii) the creation of value-added services, esp. open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept: technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. This emerging field of technology aims to improve safety of passengers and traffic flow, reduces pollution to the environment and enables in-vehicle entertainment applications. The safety-related applications could reduce accidents by providing drivers with traffic information such as collision avoidance, traffic flow alarms and road surface conditions. Moreover, the passengers could exploit an available infrastructure in order to connect to the internet for infomobility and entertainment applications. The increasing necessity of this network is an impetus for leading car manufacturers, research communities and governments to increase their efforts toward creating a standardized platform for vehicular communications. However, VANET’s unique characteristics and special requirements excite new challenges to the research community. To address these challenges in both safety- and comfort-oriented applications, there is a pressing need to develop new protocols and algorithms for channel characterization and modeling, Medium Access Control (MAC), obstacle modeling, adaptive geographical routing to sparse and dense traffic conditions. This special issue aims to theme innovative research achievements in the field of vehicular networks and communications. We are seeking original and unpublished papers. Many applications that could only have been dreamed of, have now become a reality due to the high computing resources, display and networking capabilities of smartphones. With applications ranging from productivity, entertainment, enterprise, social networking, communications and mixed reality, the smartphone is the "swiss army knife" of it all. However, there are still many untapped elements and unlimited possibilities that smartphones can provide that have not been explored much in detail. In this workshop, we will explore how smartphones can help enable cyber-physical computing, that bridges the gap between the physical and the virtual world and also enable social computing by creating mobile social networks, social networks that are built around the interactions of mobile phones. The PhoneCom 2013 workshop is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present innovative ideas and results on all aspects of smartphone computing, including theoretical foundations, techniques and methods, tools and platforms, prototypes, evaluation, practical implementations and applications. The workshop aims to attract and bring together mobile computing, cyber-physical computing, ubiquitous computing, social computing, wireless networking and communications researchers along with user interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2013 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green solutions for the processing of real-world Big Data knowledge base and streams over the Cloud. Dear all, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013. After the long Christmas and New Year break and upon requests from many potential authors, the submission deadline of the "IEEE Workshop on Telecom Standards: From Research to Standards" has been extended to 25 January 2013 (FIRM). It has been also decided that extended versions of selected best papers will be recommended for publication in Special Issues of IEEE Magazines. The organization of the second edition of the workshop is decided based on the great success of the first edition (which won the Best IEEE ComSoc Workshop Award at IEEE ICC 2012). The workshop will be collocated with IEEE ICC 2013 (June 9 - 13, 2013) in Budapest, Hungary. The goal of this Workshop is to bridge the gap between researchers, scientists, and standards experts in both academia and industry and to promote standardization as an important vehicle for information sharing and cooperation between academia and industry. An additional goal is to bring together experts from different standardization bodies, providing opportunities for closer understanding and collaboration; catalyzing development of more interoperable standards and more efficient and effective communication systems. The Workshop technical program will deliver high quality technical as well as visionary papers that will be reviewed and selected by an international program committee representing both academia and industry with a strong standardization background.
