To get that overview as quick as possible and to coordinate the rescue teams during their mission, it is essential that the teams are able to communicate with each other. However, as the disaster area is unknown and the previous communication infrastructure may be broken, the rescue teams ideally have to bring their own communication equipment to set up an independent infrastructure. Such an infrastructure may be based on small, fast, and autonomously flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that are able to fly over affected areas. These devices carry network equipment that creates an ad-hoc communication network infrastructure among all UAVs, dedicated for the rescue teams. Such a basic communication system can be used to coordinate the teams, to search for people that need help by scanning for isolated cell phones, or to offer new kinds of applications that assist the rescue teams during their work. In the second step, this temporary network can be extended by devices that have more capabilities than UAVs, for example cars or trucks that are able to carrying heavy base stations. Having such a system would be very beneficial for rescue teams that enter large-scale disaster areas. However, as each disaster scenario is different and each deployment poses different challenges, it must be possible to adapt such a communication system to the specific needs of arbitrary disaster scenarios easily. Requirements of such a system include: * adaptation to arbitrary disaster scenarios, e. g. by defining missions in a dedicated language, * having a communication scheme among the nodes that copes with mobility, * offering basic services for common tasks, e. g. scanning for infrastructure remains, and * it has to incorporate self-organized algorithms, to follow missions autonomously. This workshop will cover aspects of such communication architectures dedicated to disaster scenarios as a whole. It brings together researchers working on different layers of communication systems, as working on such an architecture benefits from knowledge regarding a broad set of aspects. The exponential growth in deployment of these technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. Therefore, new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, these technologies are at the center of the on-going revolution in next-generation 'smart' and sustainable energy systems. They measure, monitor and control energy systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources; and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements. The fourth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Berkeley, CA in May 2013, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid), and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual and small-group interaction, it will serve as a major forum for presentations and discussions that will shape the future of this area. By 2020, several tens of billions of devices are predicted to be connected. It is envisioned that the physical things/devices will be outfitted with different kinds of sensors and actuators and connected to the Internet via heterogeneous access networks enabled by technologies such as embedded sensing and actuating, radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks, real-time and semantic web services, etc. IoT is actually a network of networks with many unique characteristics. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. Now, the passengers during travelling can take smart decisions by knowing the outside environment variables such as traffic conditions, density of the vehicles in a particular region, duration of traffic lights in a particular areas, etc. Moreover, these passengers can download and upload the heavy contents while travelling with the aid of the already deployed Road Side Unit (RSUs) which are connected to Internet to provide various services to the end users. Modern Vehicles equipped with sensor nodes monitor and collect the data in sparse and dense regions which can be processed for the benefit of community of peoples, e.g., health monitoring and diagnostic systems, safety alarms, intelligent transport systems, and environment monitoring. The vehicles during movement, equipped with sensor nodes, can also collect the data from human body and that data can be processed in collaboration with the other vehicles for various medical purposes. In this case, VANETs can also be used in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). However, as a new technology emerges, it throws new challenges to the research community. Although there exist many solutions of different kinds in the relevant areas, there is still a requirement of more efficient solutions which can be used in wide variety of applications. Many industrial and academic institutions have already geared up to provide solutions for the benefits of the community. Moreover, there are many constraints that have to be resolved before providing any standard solution. However, the energy harvesting process may be sporadic, due to which nodes may temporarily run out of energy. Algorithms and protocols need to be designed that are robust to the sporadic and possibly limited energy resources available for sensing and communication. Energy efficiency (EE) is a topic of very active research in wireless communications and networking. However, realistic evaluations in real-world deployments are challenging and time consuming. Often, different simplifying assumptions are made, which makes the results (a) applicable only in specific scenarios, and (b) hard to compare across literature. There is thus a need to come up with standardized tools for benchmarking, and to develop absolute yardsticks against which all schemes that strive to improve the EE of communications can be evaluated and compared. With the recent advances in simulator tools as well as an increasing number of testbeds, the next step in evaluating energy efficiency is now practicable: realistic evaluations of energy efficiency for wireless systems, wireless sensor networks and mobile systems. This workshop aims to bring together academic experts and industrial researchers interested in the design and development of EHC, realistic evaluations of the EE and energy consumption of architectures and protocols, and novel applications in wireless communications and networks. It will create a forum for researchers to share results and collectively identify design principles for optimizing the performance of EHC and EE evaluations. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PUBLICATION AND INDEXING Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 19 and 33. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral presentation at the workshop is strictly required. As in previous years, the workshop will continue to focus on both established and emerging research topics, high-risk high-return ideas and proposals, and future research directions in multimedia networking and systems, in a single-track format that encourages active participation and discussions among academic and industry researchers and practitioners. The workshop seeks papers in all areas of multimedia networking and systems. Authors are especially encouraged to submit papers with real-world experimental results and real data sets. Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to): - Cloud and peer-to-peer system architectures - Media streaming, distribution and storage support - Multimedia communications and system security - Multi-core and many-core architecture support - Networked GPUs, graphics and virtual environments - Networked games / Real-time immersive systems - Operating system, middleware and network support - Web 2.0 systems and social networks - Wireless networks and embedded systems for multimedia applications In particular, we are interested in soliciting papers that discuss system-level support for social media and social networking, papers that focus on improving performance with multi-core and many-core processors, as well as papers that focus on multimedia applications on mobile devices and/or in a cloud computing environment. Submitted papers must be original and should not be currently under review for any other publication. Authors of accepted papers will need to sign an ACM copyright release form and present their paper at NOSSDAV 2013 in person.
