After the successful editions of Wireless Days 2008 in Dubai, UAE (43.8% acceptance ratio), Wireless Days 2009 in Paris, France (37.6% acceptance ratio), Wireless Days 2010 in Venice, Italy (32.6% acceptance ratio), and Wireless Days 2011 in Niagara Falls, Canada (35% acceptance ratio), the fifth edition of Wireless Days will be held in Dublin, Ireland, on November 21-23, 2012. Wireless Days 2012 will include presentations of both theoretical and experimental achievements, innovative wireless systems, prototyping efforts, case studies and advances in technology related to wireless networking and communication infrastructures. Wireless Days 2012 is technically co-sponsored by IEEE and IFIP and all accepted and presented Wireless Days 2012 papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore. Deployment of 4G networks and releases of new smart phones and tablets will undoubtedly raise the demand for better signal coverage, faster transmission, and seamless adaptation. One emerging research direction is wireless access virtualization, in which a group of access points collaboratively provide the illusion of a single wide-coverage access point to simplify connection management on the client side. While enjoying the benefits of accessing information at any time from anywhere, data transmitted over the wireless medium are more susceptible to eavesdropping and packet sniffing. This raises the concerns for data authentication and privacy issues. These technical challenges are aggravated by the proliferation of various cloud services, social networking platforms, and smart connected vehicles. This symposium is devoted to covering original contributions in the design, development, and analysis of novel architectures, platforms, protocols, and applications in mobile computing and vehicle communications. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. These workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss themes of common interest in a less formal setting. We are open to all topic areas, but do encourage workshop proposals covering emerging and future trends in the field. The proposed workshop should consider topics that can move the field forward and suggest promising new research directions. We accept proposals for full day (~6 hours) or half day (3-4 hours, morning or afternoon) workshops. If the proposal is accepted, the workshop is publicized as part of the conference. The criteria, reviewing and acceptance will be handled by the workshop organizers. Workshops are only open to people accepted by the workshop organizers and who register for the main conference (workshop participation itself is free of charge). Advances in hardware design and micro-fabrication have made it possible to potentially embed sensing and communication devices in every object, from banknotes to bicycles, leading to the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT). It is expected that physical objects in the near future will create an unprecedented network of interconnected physical things able to communicate information about themselves and/or their surroundings and also capable of interacting with the physical environment where they operate. Key peculiarities of IoT are the extremely large number of devices and their capability of seamlessly communicating via the Internet Protocol, which is expected to make IoT technology pervasive. IoTech will tackle technical issues related to fundamental as well as applied research on Internet of Things. Our intention is being inclusive, gathering practitioners, implementors and researchers with differing backgrounds and expertise to foster technical discussion and collaborations among IoT technology. For this second edition we would like to emphasize two aspects: 1) on the one side, the ability to scavenge energy to facilitate a sustainable IoT; and 2) on the other side, the coexistence of different technologies in the IoT, e.g., (low-power) WiFi, IEEE 802.15.4 (and its many variants), LTE Femtocells as gateway access points, mixed wired and wireless network setups. Already today, mobile network operators are suffering from the exploding number of subscribers accessing high-volume mobile data services, and this trend is expected to intensify even further in the near future. The enormous proliferation of multimedia-capable portable devices -- such as smart phones, tablets and laptops equipped with 3G and WLAN interfaces -- has increased the volume and variety of multimedia digital content and related services. A large portion of portable devices benefit today from cellular flat rates, offered by mobile operators as a response to the increasing usersâ demand for ubiquitous and seamless access to content. This demand is mainly caused by the exponential growth of the popularity of multimedia web based services, such as YouTube, Flickr and Facebook, which has ultimately created a large pool of mobile multimedia âconsumersâ. Moreover, user portable devices are typically equipped with integrated cameras, enabling people to create multimedia content in a simple way, and thus dramatically enlarging the population of multimedia "producers" as well. Current network infrastructures are not prepared to deal with this traffic increase. The mobile Internet was not designed with video requirements in mind and, as a consequence, its architecture is not tailored to efficiently handle a large volume of video traffic. Scope and Contributions The goal of this special issue is to share research efforts on the design, adaptation and enhancement of IP-based mobile network architectures aimed at providing efficient video traffic support. Students submitting to the MobiCom 2012 Poster Session can opt to have their posters considered also by the SRC committee. Selected competitors will receive up to $500 USD for their conference travel, depending on need, and will earn a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals. The winners will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet. Competitors should be prepared to attend the poster session and, if selected for further competition, give a short talk about their research projects. Winners of the MobiCom 2012 SRC will be announced at the conference. The Student Research Competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students whose submissions are accepted by the SRC committee. Several switch/router vendors are “opening” their hardware, offering APIs to allow a “software defined” control of the networking operations. The vitality of the SDN approach is witnessed by the release of several SDN tools and development environments, most of which are open sourced. *OpenFlow* The OpenFlow specifications, now standardized by the Open Networking Foundation, can represent a key component in a SDN architecture, but the SDN scope and concept is much wider than the OpenFlow APIs. In particular there is the need of higher level SDN abstractions and higher level SDN APIs, as the ones that should be offered to applications (e.g. SDN “north-bound” interfaces). *European* What makes an SDN workshop “European”? Traditional strengths of European research and development have been in optical transmission and wireless, especially cellular networks. The workshop emphasizes aspects of Software Defined Networks that come up when extending SDN 'beyond Ethernet'. In this regard, “European” does not mean that we restrict to a geographic scope, we welcome contribution and participation from all over the world. *Motivation* One goal of the workshop is to bring together industry and academia on the topics of SDN, in particular the workshop will feature an “industry forum”, i.e. a session with presentations of key industrial players (manufacturers, telecom operators, ...). ACM UBICOMP/CASEMANS 2012 - Call for papers Cloud computing, autonomic computing, pervasive computing, and mobile computing tend to be converging to maximize the combinedbenefits of these paradigms. A large number of applications can takeadvantage of this, including healthcare, traffic control, andsocial network applications. However, these applications are complexby nature and introduce several challenges of their own, for example,reliable sensing, accurate context recognition, scalability, security,dealing with previously unforeseen side-effects of adaptations, and so on. These challenges can be meaningfully addressed whenresearchers of diverse background come together to provide differentviews of the same problems and to help each other understandthe complex relationships between contending ideas. The Casemans 2012 workshop aims to open a platform for researchersof ubiquitous computing, autonomic computing, and similar fieldsto address these issues. This year, we are building on the success of casemans 2011 by introducing full and short paper sessions. Full papers will demonstrate solid research results (4-6 ACM pages) while short papers (typically 2 ACM Pages) demonstrate visionary, critical and even controversial ideas and work-in-progressthat can encourage discussion and further research.
