The current trend of unprecedented migration from rural areas to urban centers is expected to continue in the near future. This increasing urbanization has placed continuous and increasing pressure upon infrastructure, residential and commercial properties, and social communities. Cities of the future can be models of environmental efficiency, because increased density and better management reduce the cost of service delivery, promote innovation, and enable prosperity through economic development. The goSMART workshop will bring together academics, researchers and practitioners from around the world to discuss and exchange ideas on recent developments, current research challenges and future directions in the use of networking, communications, IT systems, applications and service to realize smart communities of the future. Topics of interest include but are not limited to - sensor networks for large-scale urban sensing - smart grid and efficient energy management - deployment issues for smart infrastructure in urban areas - traffic management and efficiency - mechanisms to measure quality of life of communities - participatory sensing for smart cities - security and privacy implications - methods to reduce carbon footprint of cities - mechanisms for motivating behavior change towards sustainability - experimental testbeds and simulation environments - smart clouds for management of large-scale data - service delivery and logistics planning Submitted papers will be reviewed by three independent experts in the field. Proceedings of the workshop will be published together with those of IEEE LCN, and will be available in digital format from the IEEE Explore Digital Library. Full papers should be restricted to 8 camera-ready pages (in 10 pt font, double column, US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches, IEEE format), including text, figures and references. At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such a diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real-world aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experiment! al wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. Deployment of 4G networks and releases of new smart phones and tablets will undoubtedly raise the demand for better signal coverage, faster transmission, and seamless adaptation. One emerging research direction is wireless access virtualization, in which a group of access points collaboratively provide the illusion of a single wide-coverage access point to simplify connection management on the client side. While enjoying the benefits of accessing information at any time from anywhere, data transmitted over the wireless medium are more susceptible to eavesdropping and packet sniffing. This raises the concerns for data authentication and privacy issues. These technical challenges are aggravated by the proliferation of various cloud services, social networking platforms, and smart connected vehicles. This symposium is devoted to covering original contributions in the design, development, and analysis of novel architectures, platforms, protocols, and applications in mobile computing and vehicle communications. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and relative lack of predictability (compared to well-calibrated sensors). The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. ACM MiSeNet 2012 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2012 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. ACM MiSeNet 2012 will provide them with opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. As a result of the advancements of ubiquitous and increasingly powerful wearable devices, to support the wide variety of application contexts, there exists a growing number of health monitoring systems with sophisticated capabilities. The combination of BSN, with their huge amount of gathered sensor data and their limited processing power can be tackled by exploiting a Cloud computing infrastructure to offer an integrated platform that provides: (a) the ability to utilize heterogeneous sensors; (b) scalability of data storage; (c) scalability of processing power for different kinds of analysis; (d) global access to the processing and storage infrastructure; (e) easy sharing of results; and (f) pay-as-you-go pricing for using BSN services. The aim of this special issue is to provide a comprehensive guide on new ideas and results in the BSN domain. In particular, it will focus on the state of the art, architecture, and associated techniques for BSN-Cloud integration, allowing collection and dissemination of health data from BSN to a storage Cloud repository, and processing and analysis of the stored data using software services hosted in the Cloud. It becomes more and more crucial to guarantee both performance and reliability of the systems. We need accurate models and efficient methods for quantitative analysis of these systems. The aim of this workshop is to study recent advances on probabilistic models and mathematical methods, in order to analyze these systems. Some specific problems are studied as the complexity and the size of the systems. Quantitative analysis could be very difficult to perform, so one objective of this workshop is to show how some new promising models and methods can solve these problems. Optimization methods provide also interesting solutions for example in network survivability. We plan to have one or two invited speakers from university and industry. We propose two kinds of papers: long and short papers. Long papers will be published in the proceedings. -Long papers: not exceeding 15 pages which describe research findings in the identified topics of the workshop. They should be in Springer LNCS format, and describe original work that has not been published elsewhere. Human-Computer Confluence Research Challenges May 14-15, 2012, Vienna, Austria MOTIVATION HCI research over three decades has shaped a wide spanning research area at the boundaries of computer science and behavioral science, with an impressive outreach to how humankind is experiencing information and communication technologies in literally every breath of an individuals life. The explosive growth of networks and communications, and at the same time radical miniaturization of ICT electronics have reversed the principles of human computer interaction. Up until now considered as the interaction concerns when humans approach ICT systems, more recent observations see systems approaching humans at the same time. Humans and ICT Systems apparently approach each other confluently. Human Computer Confluence has been mentioned to become a research priority in "Horizon 2020" (2013-2020), the funding programme of the European Commission that follows after the 7th Framework Programme (FP7, 2007-2013). HC2 VISIONS is a research agenda solicitation action (FP7 FET Project HC2) which may or may not be influential to the FET work programme discussion on new directions in human computer confluence. The HC2 VISIONS workshop invites key experts to pose initial research challenge statements articulated by the scientific community in a crowd sourced solicitation attempt. The goals of the workshop are to shape research challenge statements indicating (i) vision, (ii) research approach and (iii) expected impact of prospective research issues by world leading experts in the field. HC2 VISIONS is accompanied by a web-based white-book initiative at www.pervasive.jku.at/hccvisions. As the preven- tion of additional cognitive workload in HCI is a topic of increasing importance, new forms or modalities of interaction between humans and interfaces need to be explored. One promising approach is to use subliminal stimulation or the injection of information below aware perception. To throw light on this issue, the workshop is centered on the questions how subliminal effects can be scientifically supported or how a certain claim could be empirically re- futed. ENERGYCON is an international forum for the exchange of ideas and innovative technologies on Sustainable Generation, Distribution, Conversion and Utilization of Energy. This development in telecommunications opens doors to many sophisticated complex systems, e.g. social networks, smart grids, vehicular networks and sensor networks, that previously were not feasible. Graph theory is among the most widely used tools for modeling and analyzing the many types of interactions, relations and dynamics in these systems. Many problems of practical interest can be represented by graphs. The use of graph theory in vehicular networks, or more broadly highly dynamic networks, is of particular interest. The complex interactions among vehicles, between vehicles and road-side infrastructure, combined with the high mobility of vehicles and fast changing topology, present some unique challenges in network modeling and performance analysis, network design, resource management and communication protocol design. This special section aims to provide recent advances in graph theory that are applicable to highly dynamic networks, particularly vehicular networks, identify challenges in the area and present possible solutions, and furthermore to unveil the significant potential of graph theory in the domain of vehicular networks. Topics of interest for this special section include, but are not limited to: * Vehicular network modeling and performance analysis; * Network architecture design; * Vehicular technologies for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure networking & services; * End-to-end service delivery architectures, algorithms, protocols and scalability; * Cooperative communications; * Quality of service; * Resource management; * Robust network and communication protocol design; * Interference characterization and management; * Localization techniques; * Road traffic management.
