Overview Wireless connected robots and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have enabled great potentials and a large space for ubiquitous and pervasive applications. Robotics and WSNs have mostly been considered as separate research fields and little work has investigated the marriage between these two technologies. However, these two technologies share several features, enable common cyber-physical applications and provide complementary support to each other. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia, and industry working in to both robotics and sensor networks areas to present and discuss recent advances and innovative ideas pertaining to these fields. Papers dealing with the coupling between robots and sensor networks are particularly sought. The workshop also looks for contributions about cyber-physical applications based on robotics and sensor networks, such as intelligent transportation systems, healthcare monitoring, industrial automation, etc. The workshop will provide a relaxed forum to present and discuss new ideas, new research directions and to review current trends in these areas. The workshop will be based on short presentations that should encourage discussions among the attendees. Statements which are innovative, controversial or that present new approaches are specially sought. However, a battery-powered system has a finite operation time. Power supplies using energy- harvesting devices apparently open the door to unlimited and uninterrupted operation. This requires a dedicated power management that predicts available power budgets and aims at maximizing performance metrics for a given budget. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. For that purpose, we particularly enencourage preliminary contributions by Ph.D. students in addition to completed work. In addition to paper presentations, there will be a poster and demo session. Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. This workshop continues the successful WiNMee series, begun at WiOpt in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. We seek novel papers that advance the understanding of wireless networks through testbed measurements or field experiments. Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. The workshop complements the topics of the main EuroSys conference, since the research issues with online social networks span the topics of distributed computing, databases, and storage systems as well as security and privacy. This workshop will focus on the systems issues of online social networks. Broadly, a systems issue of social networks comprises three main areas: 1. Embedded sensors and data capture devices in such environments have potential to capture the state of the evolving physical systems and processes creating situational awareness of the activities in the instrumented space. Situational awareness, in a broad sense, refers to a continuum of knowledge that captures the current state of the physical environments being observed, to future projected states of these observed environments. Such situational awareness offers opportunities to realizing new functionalities and / or bringing transformational improvements in many application domains. While the potential of sensor enabled situational awareness is well recognized, its realization poses numerous challenges which are being actively pursued by the research communities in different disciplines ranging from embedded computing, networking, distributed systems, middleware, data management, software engineering, machine learning, to privacy and security. On the application side, sensor enabled situational awareness forms a critical core for several of the emerging applications including environmental monitoring, Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems. The purpose of this workshop is to serve as a multidisciplinary forum to bring researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss the state of the art, identify new emerging challenges and opportunities. With CPS week hosting several conferences related to the domain of cyber physical systems, including IPSN and ICCPS, SESA serves as a fitting venue to discuss the broad challenges in the domain before specific ch allenges are addressed in each of these conferences. The workshop will comprise contributed and invited papers, a keynote and a panel on topics as outlined below. List of Topics: We solicit papers/contributions related (but not limited) to the following themes: New sensing modalities - e.g., audio/video sensors, mobile phone based sensing, human sensors and social networking as information sources. Novel applications of sensor enabled situational awareness. Programming methodologies /abstractions that overcome complexities due to sensor heterogeneity, uncertainty, and errors in sensor data. Modeling & understanding observed environments. Context reasoning and aggregation leading to situational awareness. Scalability and robustness of sensor driven systems that continuously monitor physical spaces. Privacy challenges due to fine-grained sensor data capture. Take advantage of diversity of communication methodologies aware. Energy aware applications optimizing on limited battery capacity even when it comes to today's smartphones. Experiences in building sensor driven situational awareness. Paper Submission: A submission should report on original, previously unpublished research that is not being concurrently considered elsewhere for publication in a journal or conference. A submission consists of up to 8 single-spaced pages using at least 11-point Times Roman font and one-inch margins on all sides on A4 or letter sized pages. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in the emergence of Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders, whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but he might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is an emerging paradigm that transmits events captured by low-end machines such as sensors and smart meters, to high-end applications that translate the captured events into meaningful information. Data generally flows from a machine over a wired, wireless, or hybrid network and then through a gateway to a system where it can be automatically reviewed and actions may be taken without any interaction from an operator. M2M is used in a wide range of applications such as remote e-healthcare, smart homes, utility management, and industrial automation. Connecting different WSNs/part of a WSN is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance, where an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. *Topics* Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as connectivity issues in WSNs. Many applications that could only have been dreamed of, have now become a reality due to the high computing resources, display and networking capabilities of smartphones. With applications ranging from productivity, entertainment, enterprise, social networking, communications and mixed reality, the smartphone is the "swiss army knife" of it all. However, there are still many untapped elements and unlimited possibilities that smartphones can provide that have not been explored much in detail. The PhoneCom 2012 workshop is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present innovative ideas and results on all aspects of smartphone computing, including theoretical foundations, techniques and methods, tools and platforms, prototypes, evaluation, practical implementations and applications. The workshop aims to attract and bring together mobile computing, cyber-physical computing, ubiquitous computing, social computing, wireless networking and communications researchers along with user interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds. The workshop will be a full day workshop. Besides research paper presentations, the workshop will feature an Invited Talk (keynote) and a Panel Discussion session. The workshop will be held in Macau, China in June 2012, in conjunction with the 32nd IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2012) (http://icdcs-2012.org/). Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Network (co-located with CPSWEEK 2012) - will host a Ph.D. Forum on Sensor Network Research. The Forum will provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present their dissertation research, including work in progress, to the sensor network community and obtain individual feedback from leading researchers in the field. The Forum will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students, followed by individual discussions, feedback, and advise. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their own perspectives on current and future sensor network research, as well as on how to best purse a Ph.D. in this field. Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with CPSWEEK attendees. Current Ph.D. students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-page extended abstract about their dissertation research in sensor networking to be considered for the Ph.D. Forum. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph bio of the student, along with information on how long he/she has been in Ph.D. school and the expected time until graduation. The student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others should be acknowledged. Submissions will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Forum committee to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance to the Forum. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person to the Forum - to be held on April 15th, 2012 - and to present a poster both at the Forum and at the main conference. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Such a vision is also becoming known under the name of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), where the absence of human interaction in the system dynamics is further stressed. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges are: i) the definition of architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (Future) Internet; and ii) the creation of value-added services, esp. open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept: technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. Complex networks research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6 pages and in PDF format, and use the ACM templates. All fonts must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable). In order to allow papers to appear in the ACM Digital Library, authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit, together with their camera-ready, an ACM proceedings copyright transfer form. Moreover, with the number of wireless subscribers expected to triple over the next five years, it is obvious that current networks will not be able to satisfy customer demands in the near future. In order to meet this traffic growth and provide service to their customers, vendors and operators are working on the development of new technologies and cellular standards. Within them, heterogeneity in network deployment has been heralded as the most promising way of increasing both the coverage and the capacity of future wireless systems. Thus, it is expected that new elements such as remote radio heads, picocells, femtocells, and relay nodes will be deployed overlying macrocells. Therefore, future networks are expected to be heterogeneous. In this way, networks will be closer to users, and system capacity will be enhanced through a better spatial spectrum reuse. However, although HetNets are envisioned to support the increasing data traffic demand and meet the requirements imposed for the fourth generation of mobile networks, they also lead to new technical challenges never faced before. For example, due to the larger number of cells and thus of cell boundaries, the management of interference becomes an intricate problem. Since centralized network planning and optimization cannot deal with the individualistic nature of user-deployed cells, e.g., femtocells, a key to the success of HetNets is the cooperation between nodes in a decentralized and distributed manner. Such cooperation is the only way to ensure a proper network operation. However, cooperation is not easy to achieve due to different issues and threats imposed by the network itself, e.g., limited back-haul capabilities, dynamics of traffic and radio channel, energy consumption, operational costs, etc. _____________________________________________ Main Topics: The target of this workshop is to bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss all recent challenges and developments related to cooperation in HetNets, and establish future research directions. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: - Collaborative techniques in macro/pico/femto-cellular networks. - Performance modeling and simulation for HetNets. - Cooperative communications between HetNet nodes. - Downlink and uplink PHY/MAC design for cooperative HetNets. - Self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing in HetNets. - Cognitive radio techniques in HetNets. - Mobility management in HetNets. - Load balancing in HetNets. - Restricted access versus open-access for low-power HetNet nodes. - Interference analysis, mitigation and avoidance in HetNets. - Power saving mechanism in HetNets. - Distributed radio resource management in cooperative HetNets. - Cooperative sensing techniques and feedback in HetNets. - Remote radio headers planning and deployment. - Expanded region picocells planning and deployment. - Cooperative relaying in HetNets. - eICIC techniques in LTE-Advanced HetNets. - MIMO techniques in HetNets. - Positioning and tracking systems based on HetNets. _____________________________________________ Instructions for Authors: Submitted manuscripts must be formatted in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font) and must be submitted via EDAS ( http://edas.info/ ) as PDF files (formatted for 8.5x11-inch paper).
