In the ERA Conference Ranking Exercise, ADHOC-NOW is considered as a B conference (same ranking as IEEE conferences ICC, Globecom, MASS, DCOSS, etc.) ADHOC-NOW serves as a forum for interesting discussions on ongoing research and new contributions. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in the emergence of Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders, whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but he might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs/part of a WSN is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance, where an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Topics: Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as connectivity issues in WSNs. Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. ========================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS PWSN 2012 4th International Workshop on Performance Control in Wireless Sensor Networks http://www.netrl.cs.ucy.ac.cy/pwsn2012/ May 18 2012, Hangzhou, China In conjunction with the 8th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS '12) ========================================================================= Wireless sensor networks are currently the subject of intense research and many prototype installations are currently investigated. However, most of the existing sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In contrast, many envisioned future application areas of wireless sensor networks (such as plant automation and control, traffic management, medical applications, emergency solutions) require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network towards the end user. To make the networking task more complex, in many applications the end user or the controlling intelligence is located remotely (e.g., remote monitoring, supervision and surveillance applications), and the wireless sensor network interworks with other networks (e.g., fixed infrastructure cellular, Internet). Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor network with performance guarantees. Thus, the commercial success of wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this particular problem is understood and solved. The PWSN workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners working on performance issues within wireless sensor networks. The workshop intends to examine research challenges associated with achieving dependability in WSNs, share experiences from real-life deployment of dependable sensor networks, discuss application-dependent wireless sensor-actuator design methodologies, illustrate dependable MAC, network and transport protocols, and in general, explore issues of reliability in WSNs. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city – which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms – also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions – socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This workshop is the second in this series building upon the successful PURBA 2011 workshop. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. This development in telecommunications opens doors to many sophisticated complex systems, e.g. social networks, smart grids, vehicular networks and sensor networks, that previously were not feasible. Graph theory is among the most widely used tools for modeling and analyzing the many types of interactions, relations and dynamics in these systems. Many problems of practical interest can be represented by graphs. The use of graph theory in vehicular networks, or more broadly highly dynamic networks, is of particular interest. The complex interactions among vehicles, between vehicles and road-side infrastructure, combined with the high mobility of vehicles and fast changing topology, present some unique challenges in network modeling and performance analysis, network design, resource management and communication protocol design. This special section aims to provide recent advances in graph theory that are applicable to highly dynamic networks, particularly vehicular networks, identify challenges in the area and present possible solutions, and furthermore to unveil the significant potential of graph theory in the domain of vehicular networks. ICWCUCA was originally dedicated to wireless communications in confined environments for industrial mining applications. An unusual environment refers to an environment that can be hazardous, costly or hard to reach. Such an environment can have experienced a natural or industrial disaster, or can be a remote natural area. In these conditions, network solutions have to be self-powered, robust against node losses, deployed quickly, and they have to provide a service during a long period (usually expressed in years). Thus, research on wireless sensor networks is a topic for ICWCUCA. Communication protocols that have limited energy consumption, that are resistant to losses and that can satisfy the application temporal constraints, on a peculiar physical medium, are the main expected contributions. In particular, the self-* properties (self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protection) outline the fundamental features of an autonomic computing system. Parallel and distributed systems, a computing domain with great applicability in a variety of industrial and domestic contexts, rely on self-* software to manage a large number of heterogeneous computation, communication, and storage resources. Years of effort had been given by researchers and engineers to maximize the lifetime of WSNs in almost all the aspects, e.g., routing, topology control, deployment, data aggregation, clustering, and sleep scheduling. However, recently advanced technical developments have allowed sensor nodes to harvest environmental energy from natural sources, e.g., wind, water flow, ocean currents, and solar, which enable WSNs to have the rechargeable energy supply. With multiple energy sources, the overall efficiency, reliability and sustainability are enhanced in any WSN application system. This emerging technical development gives sensor nodes a totally different energy model compared to traditional battery powered sensor nodes, which fundamentally changed the assumption for many existing lifetime optimization schemes. We should look back almost all traditional challenging issues in WSNs to cope with this new changing. New research issues, e.g., power management with multiple energy sources, should also be considered. This special issue aims at seeking new approaches, methods, and schemes for solving both traditional and new challenging issues in WSNs with environmental energy harvesting. In the ERA Conference Ranking Exercise, ADHOC-NOW is considered as a B conference (same ranking as IEEE conferences ICC, Globecom, MASS, DCOSS, etc.) ADHOC-NOW serves as a forum for interesting discussions on ongoing research and new contributions. Publication date : Q1/2013 !! ----- Aim and Scope: -------------- In recent years, the number of networked machines and/or devices, such as those encountered in automatic meter readers, vending machines, or in remote monitoring applications; has dramatically increased. As a result, we have witnessed the emergence of the so-called paradigm of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. M2M devices are often characterized by very modest data rates, low mobility and stringent cost requirements, along with the need to communicate over a wide area. Besides, in the coming years, M2M devices are expected to significantly outnumber voice and (often bandwidth-hungry) data terminals. All this entails a major re-design of future cellular networks, which were originally conceived with human-to-human communications in mind. This opens a wide research area for future M2M communications, including investigations on scalability, wide-area coverage, energy-efficiency, spectral-efficiency, heterogeneity, cooperation, security and inter-networking architectures. To this end, the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's M2M Technical Committee has proposed a hybrid architecture whereby cellular-enabled gateways act as traffic aggregation and protocol translation points for their capillary (i.e. wireless sensor) networks. Capillary networks, in turn, are composed of a potentially high number of devices (namely, sensors and actuators) equipped with short-range radio interfaces, often compliant IEEE802.15.4-related standards. Current standardization activities in 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) encompass a number of optimizations specifically addressing machine-type communication needs. Moreover, IPSO (IP for Smart Objects) is assembling a protocol stack from standards being finalized at the IEEE and IETF. This special issue aims at gathering recent advances in the areas of advanced M2M communication systems, and technologies, with the perspective of current M2M-related standardization activities in 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, IETF and IPSO. The design and implementation of these services in a high-performance, reliable, scalable, secure and privacy-preserving fashion presents exciting research challenges. Additionally, the experimentation and validation in VANETs either relies on simulations or testbeds. On the one hand, simulation requires realistic network and mobility models. On the other hand, with the emergence of communications standards and hardware, prototyping and testbeds allow to obtain performance measures under real-word conditions such as realistic signal propagation and vehicles' mobility. VANETs are therefore a popular and active research field with many ongoing large-scale projects involving governments, academia and industry. The workshop on VANETs from Theory to Practice (VTP 2012) will to bring together researchers on VANETs to present and discuss recent advances in the development of inter-vehicular networking technologies. The workshop covers all theoretical and practical aspects related to applications modelling, simulation, prototyping and testbeds in VANETs.
