Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSANs, WSNs, robot networks, and robotics and automation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Autonomous sensor networks * Emergent behavior in WSAN * Modeling and simulation of WSAN * WSAN architectural and operational models * Autonomic and self-organizing coordination and communication * Sensor-actor (robot) and actor-actor coordination * Energy-efficient and real-time communication protocols * Bandwidth-efficient and delay-tolerant communication protocols * Distributed control and management in WSAN * Neighborhood discovery and mobility management * Communication protocols for swarms of mobile actors (robots) * Map exploration and pattern formation of mobile robots * Actor (robot) task assignment * Biologically inspired communication * Ecological systems * Architectures and topology control * Localization in WSAN * Probabilistic integration in WSAN * Quality of service, security and robustness issues * Applications and prototypes * Hybrid networks and wireless Internet * Data management, gathering, aggregation and query processing Papers must not exceed 6 single-spaced and two-column pages using at least 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inches pages, and must be formatted in strict accordance with the IEEE author guidelines. Submissions are being considered with the understanding that they describe original research, neither published nor under review elsewhere. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Digital Library after the conference and included in DCOSS 2012 proceedings. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communication as well as on cellular systems. This workshop will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, consisting of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elements that are connected through a continuous network. However this type of service has severe problems if it is to be adopted in the business area. Some aspects which are not solved for the mobile domain include dependability, device management, provability of intent and information filtering. Due to the increasing computing capabilities and the increasing quality of hard- and software of smartphones, we expect these problems to find solutions in the next years and solicit any original scientific work which addresses one of these unsolved challenges. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges for the design, operation and backend integration of mobile applications for non-commercial Apps as well as enterprise applications. However, a battery-powered system has a finite operation time. Power supplies using energy- harvesting devices apparently open the door to unlimited and uninterrupted operation. This requires a dedicated power management that predicts available power budgets and aims at maximizing performance metrics for a given budget. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. The workshop complements the topics of the main EuroSys conference, since the research issues with online social networks span the topics of distributed computing, databases, and storage systems as well as security and privacy. This workshop will focus on the systems issues of online social networks. Broadly, a systems issue of social networks comprises three main areas: 1. Infrastructure support for social networks (including distributed systems, databases, and storage systems). 2. Ways of leveraging social networks in systems design. 3. Measurement and analysis of existing deployed social networks. Unfortunately, the wireless and mobile research communities lack such data, with typical human contact traces consisting of less than 100 nodes. We believe that large-scale datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. Topics of interest include but are not restricted to: . Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data collection, especially from other disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, sociology . Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets . Techniques for mobility data storage and processing . Knowledge discovery from mobility data . Regulatory, legal and ethical issues in planet-wide data collection FULL PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6 pages and in PDF format, and use the ACM templates. All fonts must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable). Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. The workshop complements the topics of the main EuroSys conference, since the research issues with online social networks span the topics of distributed computing, databases, and storage systems as well as security and privacy. This workshop will focus on the systems issues of online social networks. Broadly, a systems issue of social networks comprises three main areas: 1. Embedded sensors and data capture devices in such environments have potential to capture the state of the evolving physical systems and processes creating situational awareness of the activities in the instrumented space. Situational awareness, in a broad sense, refers to a continuum of knowledge that captures the current state of the physical environments being observed, to future projected states of these observed environments. Such situational awareness offers opportunities to realizing new functionalities and / or bringing transformational improvements in many application domains. While the potential of sensor enabled situational awareness is well recognized, its realization poses numerous challenges which are being actively pursued by the research communities in different disciplines ranging from embedded computing, networking, distributed systems, middleware, data management, software engineering, machine learning, to privacy and security. On the application side, sensor enabled situational awareness forms a critical core for several of the emerging applications including environmental monitoring, Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems. The purpose of this workshop is to serve as a multidisciplinary forum to bring researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss the state of the art, identify new emerging challenges and opportunities. With CPS week hosting several conferences related to the domain of cyber physical systems, including IPSN and ICCPS, SESA serves as a fitting venue to discuss the broad challenges in the domain before specific ch allenges are addressed in each of these conferences. The workshop will comprise contributed and invited papers, a keynote and a panel on topics as outlined below. List of Topics: We solicit papers/contributions related (but not limited) to the following themes: New sensing modalities - e.g., audio/video sensors, mobile phone based sensing, human sensors and social networking as information sources. Novel applications of sensor enabled situational awareness. Programming methodologies /abstractions that overcome complexities due to sensor heterogeneity, uncertainty, and errors in sensor data. Modeling & understanding observed environments. Context reasoning and aggregation leading to situational awareness. Scalability and robustness of sensor driven systems that continuously monitor physical spaces. Privacy challenges due to fine-grained sensor data capture. Take advantage of diversity of communication methodologies aware. Energy aware applications optimizing on limited battery capacity even when it comes to today's smartphones. Experiences in building sensor driven situational awareness. Paper Submission: A submission should report on original, previously unpublished research that is not being concurrently considered elsewhere for publication in a journal or conference. A submission consists of up to 8 single-spaced pages using at least 11-point Times Roman font and one-inch margins on all sides on A4 or letter sized pages. The page limit includes title page, references, figures, and tables. Extra material, such as additional experiments, proofs, and graphs, can be included in a clearly-marked appendix, which will be read at the discretion of the program committee. Doctoral students working in areas related to wireless, mobile and multimedia networking are solicited to submit an extended abstract comprising a summary of their research findings, work in progress and planned research. The forum will be a platform for PhD students to interact both with their peers as well as experienced researchers from industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session and will include a ‘1-minute madness’ introduction by each student. Current Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract. Submissions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to attend WoWMoM 2012 and present their poster at the PhD Forum. The best presentation at the Forum will receive a sponsored award, and there is likely to be travel assistance for some students. Accepted extended abstracts will appear in conference proceedings. Extended Abstract Submission: Ph.D. students are invited to submit two-page extended abstracts that describe current research and potential contributions to theory and innovation in mobile and wireless computing/communications, multimedia on mobile networks and closely related areas. Submissions must be received by no later than April 2, 2012. Extended abstracts should include the author's name, affiliation, and email address. URL: http://www.iet.ntnu.no/~jgding/ *Subject of the Workshop* We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor networking (WSN), which makes it possible to monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time, the physical environment. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in the emergence of Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders, whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but he might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is an emerging paradigm that transmits events captured by low-end machines such as sensors and smart meters, to high-end applications that translate the captured events into meaningful information. Data generally flows from a machine over a wired, wireless, or hybrid network and then through a gateway to a system where it can be automatically reviewed and actions may be taken without any interaction from an operator. M2M is used in a wide range of applications such as remote e-healthcare, smart homes, utility management, and industrial automation. Connecting different WSNs/part of a WSN is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance, where an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. *Topics* Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as connectivity issues in WSNs. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Such a vision is also becoming known under the name of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), where the absence of human interaction in the system dynamics is further stressed. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges are: i) the definition of architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (Future) Internet; and ii) the creation of value-added services, esp. open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept: technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - System architectures for the IoT/M2M - Communication protocols for the IoT/M2M - Service platforms for the IoT/M2M - Enabling technologies and standards for the IoT/M2M - Mobility management - Context awareness - Sustainable design - Location-based services and geographic information systems - Experimental prototypes and large-scale testbed infrastructures - Performance evaluation of IoT/M2M solutions - Convergence with the Internet of Services - Applications, including: eHealth/mHealth; Smart Grid/Smart Metering; connected consumer; fleet management; surveillance; Intelligent Transportation Systems; Smart House/Neighborhood/City - Business development and processes - Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION All submissions must describe original research, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. This forms a framework on harmonization of results obtained separately in different areas of network research like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer network design. The conference goal is in the identification, investigation and integration of new algorithms, approaches, architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and efficient operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network. Therefore, wireless networks and their interaction with wired networks shall be widely examined and addressed throughout the conference.
