Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Submission Deadline: Jan 15, 2012 Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content — and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities. Indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven’t been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following. * Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular networks * System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and mobile applications * Real-world measurements and characterization * Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and mobile applications * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks * Testbed design and implementation * Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the PHY layer to applications * Modeling, simulation, emulation and measurement of mobile systems * Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater networking * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks * Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless networking systems * Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks MobiCom’12 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Selected outstanding papers will be fast-tracked for publication in a special section of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. From traditional wireless networks to opportunistic networks of mobile devices in urban environments and deep-space communications, the new approaches require an efficient merging with the traditional wired infrastructure. The need for novel all-weather protocols, clean-slate or evolutionary architectures, merging and assembling of different network technologies, unified operation and management of the heterogeneous components and the support for new multimedia services are only few examples of the wide range of technologies building-up this new global network. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics and cross-layer interactions. This year, we particularly emphasize on areas such as Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Networks (DTNs) and Opportunistic Networks. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field of global internetworking, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, within 9 years, a high quality level, which is reflected both on the level of participation as well as on the acceptance ratio and the amount and quality of submitted papers. Following the conference tradition there will also be a best paper award. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes of Computer Science (LNCS) Series. Extended versions of selected papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of an international journal. Scope: Energy Harvesting Communications (EHC) offers the tantalizing possibility of perpetual operation, as the communication nodes only use energy harvested from their environment for processing and communication. However, the energy harvesting process may be sporadic, due to which nodes may temporarily run out of energy. Algorithms and protocols need to be designed that are robust to the sporadic and possibly limited energy resources available for sensing and communication. This workshop aims to bring together academic experts and industrial researchers interested in the design and development of EHC. This demand has been necessitated by the human desire for information and communication. Hence, wireless networks have been designed to serve mainly Internet best-effort traffic as well as delay-sensitive voice and video applications. Besides this, we have also witnessed research into new network paradigms like Mobile Ad hoc Networks and Wireless Mesh Networks which serve the same types of traffic in general. Recently, the vision of an Internet of Things has become more and more a reality. Wireless sensor networks and Machine-to-Machine networking connect resource-constrained and likely battery-powered devices such as sensors and actuators with each other and with control units. For example, recent years have witnessed the adoption of wireless sensor-actuator networks as a communication infrastructure for industrial applications such as process monitoring and control. Open industrial standards such as WirelessHART have shown promise through commercial products and system deployments in real-world industrial environments.However, industrial and process control have substantially more stringent requirements in terms of reliability, real-time, security and networked control performance than even time-critical best-effort applications like Voice-Over-IP have. This workshop will provide an open forum for academic and industrial researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in this important area. The focus is on 'soft' real time requirements as well as on 'hard' real-time requirements potentially with very low latencies. The workshop cross-cuts the diverse areas associated with CPS Week including real-time systems (RTAS), wireless sensor networks (IPSN), control (HSCC), and the integration of them in cyber-physical systems (ICCPS). For these efforts to be sustainable, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector must overcome a number of challenges, such as: reducing the life-cycle resource consumption of the exploding market in mobile devices; using as little electricity from non-renewable sources as possible; improving efficiency of the individual devices; and managing complex interconnected systems, communication products and services. While significant research progress have been made in networking and communication aspects of WSNs, new design paradigms are required for wireless sensor actor and actuator networks (WiSAANs). In particular new ideas are required to address the challenges resulting from introducing actors and actuators in the network. This workshop aims to bring the state-of-art research contributions in theory, design and implementation of communication protocols for WiSAANs. This is directly linked to the fact that people are living longer with an expected 761 million of us being over the age of 65 by 2025. This will increase the risk of chronic disease and other co-morbidities amongst the elderly and estimates suggest that treating this particular group of people currently accounts for 78% of all healthcare expenditure (over a trillion US dollars per year) with spending expected to be $4.3 trillion in 2018 compared to $27.5 billion in 1960. Whilst increasing life expectancy is at an all-time high, it has become difficult to sustain. One suggestion is that quality of life and life expectancy can be increased through healthy aging and lifestyle choices. Positive behavioural changes will empower people and support the prevention of acute episodes, including the provision of provide better services that are tailored to people’s healthcare needs. This presents a unique opportunity were the use of information and communications technology could be used to support the delivery and management of healthcare services. Building on advances in Smartphone technologies and wireless communications it is possible to bridge the gap between people and medical facilities and transform healthcare services and clinical intervention within the community. These technologies, as well as allowing us to make a phone call, text a friend, or update our social networking site, provide access to vital data about a person that can be collected and analysed to support research, medical and healthcare education, and clinical practice with less reliance on secondary care (hospital admissions). Empowering people in the community, particularly the aging population, allows them to evaluate lifestyle choices and to take control of their own healthcare needs. Diseases, such as diabetes and obesity are often caused by an accumulation of unmonitored health-related choices, such as poor nutrition and lack of exercise, which occur over decades rather than weeks or months. Smartphones, body sensors, and wireless communications provide the necessary tools to host community healthcare services and applications capable of real-time monitoring and analysis of lifestyle choices. Using digital diaries, social networking, SMS, amongst other technologies, makes it possible to manage adherence and provide education about relevant medical conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, sexual health, poor nutrition and the lack of exercise. All this will have the ability to empower people and encourage personal consumer healthcare beyond what is currently possible. Nonetheless, due to the criticality of healthcare and the complex coordination and delivery of healthcare services it is not surprising that we have not seen widespread adoption of mobile ICT in health. The healthcare domain is sensitive to change and this will require new processes, methodologies and tools, and this comes at a time when sustainable health is becoming increasingly more difficult. From a technical perspective, a number of challenges still remain and form part of the topics under this call for papers. Submission Deadline Dec 20, 2011 Scope of the Workshop The scope of the CoCoNet4 workshop is to bring together a highly qualified group of people with interest in cooperative and cognitive wireless networks. Cooperation is becoming a major subject in research in the wireless communication community as it has been identified as one of the underlying principles for future wireless communication systems. Cooperation, altruistic or non-altruistic, is the basis to break up the cellular concept and enrich it by multi hop, peer-to-peer, or grid functionalities. The workshop will highlight the newest trends in this emerging area, complementing it with first practical implementations and demonstrations in this field. New technologies and concepts such as network coding and mobile clouds are the driving forces for cooperative and cognitive networks. Besides the technical insights, the workshop will encourage the participants to discuss among each other. The workshop is seeking papers for oral presentations and papers which will be presented in poster sessions possibly accompanied with demonstrations or test-beds. Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory/Elsevier Special Issue on Simulation-based Performance Evaluation of Infrastructures for the Internet of Things: Connectivity and resource considerations in the mobility Era Call for Papers ---------------- Smart wireless devices that are configured to communicate in a Mobile Peer-to-Peer (MP2P) manner will be soon able to have integrated features hosting all kinds of daily needs’ applications, in a 3A (Anything, Anytime, Anywhere) reliable configuration, and interact with one another using multiplatform applications. These advancements create the need of the development of a supportive infrastructure and network architecture that will enable the realization of the Internet of Things (IoT) which will be able to host real-time applications in a resource and energy efficient reliable way. The IoT realizes its potential in the context of a global communications platform that can be used by millions of independent devices co-operating together in large or small combinations, and in shared or separated federations. It involves connected embedded-devices such as sensors, home appliances, weather stations and even movable objects (such as toys, wearable devices-objects etc) to Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks. This Special Issue addresses the trend in both science and industry for smart embedded devices (smart objects) to become IP-enabled, as well as the latest frontier of the Internet, consisting of wireless low-power embedded devices-called the Wireless Embedded Internet. It also targets the development and implementation of new fundamental architectures for the efficient support of IoT technologies, where many resource limitations can be faced and various network mechanisms will be optimized by providing new middleware architectures that will face application-specific issues. Additionally the Special Issue aims to present novel middleware architectures and techniques for optimizing the power consumption, connectivity and reliability aspects, as well as aims to propose new models for capacity and data flow management for providing sufficient end-to-end resource management. Performance evaluation can be performed using simulation in order to evaluate the performance under different efficiency angles. With modeling and simulation the dynamically changing IoT environments, can be further analyzed and explored by utilizing computational and mathematical techniques, while creating a model construct of a conceptual framework that describes an IoT system. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this new paradigm.
