Wireless networking affects a number of fields, including healthcare, environmental, home appliances, education, military applications, among others. In general, designing, developing and testing of an efficient wireless network protocol is a great challenge for the researchers in these areas. Moreover, the development of an application specific protocol in any of these fields depends on various factors including the security, miniaturization, application constraints, hardware constraints, and energy requirements. The traditional trend in wireless network protocol design and development is towards maximization of the performance observed by the end-user, in terms of perceived throughput, delay, QoS, etc. Nevertheless, the rate of advances in battery technology continues to lag behind that of semiconductor technology, which is still well predicted by the celebrated Moore’s law. This imbalance in the rate of advances creates a gap between the energy a wireless network needs to operate and the battery capacity that powers its nodes. Hence, the requirement of Energy-Efficiency appears as an extremely important property of new protocols for wireless networks with battery-powered mobile nodes. Moreover, Energy-Efficiency is the tool to realize the vision of green wireless networks, which are deemed important these days due to the increasing share of wireless systems of the total energy expended in communications and networking systems. Energy-awareness contributes to achieving the task of energy-efficiency, as it provides the ability to networking protocols to adapt their operation according to the energy reserves of the network nodes and thus increase the energy-efficiency of a system. The objective of this special issue is to report state-of-the art results in energy-aware wireless networking protocols by welcoming contributions originating from both academic and industrial research. These should be original contributions solicited in relevant areas of energy-efficient wireless networking protocols. A large body of research, from various perspectives, have been produced by both the ad hoc networking and the robotics research communities to achieve self-organization and coordination of groups of sensors, actuators, robots or drones toward target-oriented missions. But, the convergence of objectives and methodologies of the two disciplines is still open for further significant research efforts and challenging problems remain. The research on ad hoc networks, autonomic networks, cyber physical systems, self-organizing networks and machine-to-machine communications has involved issues, concepts and challenges that are useful for characterizing the pathway toward the formalization of the theory and the definition of algorithms for Wireless Networked Robotics (WNR). WNR brings together the physical control of the devices along with their communication capabilities and it includes that so far have been either neglected or only partially explored by the ad hoc networking and the robotics research communities. In WNR some or all of the devices are expected to have memory and reasoning capabilities, which allow them to use the input coming from other devices, the environment and their history to select the best behaviour to assume according to mission objectives. Therefore, machine learning and cognitive networks concepts and algorithms would greatly contribute to WNR theory and algorithms. This special issue aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the theory, algorithms and applications of wireless networked robotics. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this new paradigm. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) http://www.elsevier.com/locate/future Special Issue on "Management of Cloud Systems" The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality because of the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). At the current stage, after the initial hype of enthusiasm, several ongoing research efforts are deeply focusing on the open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to enable and boost a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite several recent provisioning of Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions can withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services de/activation and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The mission of this Special Issue is to put on the foreground all the above issues and to disseminate the latest research result in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in management of Cloud systems. Along that direction, this special issue will collect a mix of extended and updated versions of papers recently presented at the international Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011), and of other papers submitted from this open call. In particular, all the authors of papers accepted for inclusion in the MoCS11 proceedings are invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers; in addition, we are asking for high-quality papers (from open call) reporting original research results. ICN focuses on finding and transmitting information to end users instead of connecting end hosts that exchange information. The key concepts are expected to have a huge impact on the familiar textbook protocol stack, in network architecture in general, and will create new opportunities for all associated stakeholders including equipment vendors, network operators, service and content providers, and above all end-users. Scope and Objectives Information-centric networking is to succeed only if it can to provide clearly superior solutions to well-known problems in the current generation of all-IP networks and can be introduced to general usage incrementally. We invite authors to consider the following aspects with respect to information-centric networks: * Naming & addressing: What breakthroughs in naming and addressing will make ICN scalable when faced with a global network of billions of devices and zettabytes of available content? * Protocol stack: Can ICN deliver a neat and simple protocol stack? * Network architecture: What does a ICN network architecture look like? * Management: What are the essential characteristics of a complete management framework that is scalable, flexible, and suitable for ICN? * Caching: New issues to be addressed such as buffer management and caching policy. * Energy efficiency: Will ICN pave the way to a holistic energy efficient operation? * Internet of Things (IoT): How does ICN scale in the scenarios envisioned for the IoT and how does it compare with current IP-based IoT solutions? * Security: Can ICN foster the development of a more secure and trusted global communications infrastructure? * Which business models could foster a fair relationship between content producers, content providers and service/network providers? Submitted articles do not need to cover all these aspects but should strive to clearly contrast the ICN approach with the current TCP/IP-based state of affairs. Recently, we have been also observing that the communication distance between transmitters and receivers shrinks in many commercial applications. This includes sensor/RFID networks, WiFi and near field communication (NFC) devices. Such shortened distance is mostly caused by the high volume of data demand of users. One other reason is that the modern communications is not any more for human-to-human (H2H) information exchange only but also for machine-to-machine (M2M) or machine-to-human (M2H). The inter-machine distance will be gradually decreasing in many upcoming applications. This trend adds complexity to the communication protocols with very high node density and unpredictable interference in particular in wireless networks. The machine in M2M or M2H refers to various devices from remote metering modules to vehicles or small networked robots with communication functions embedded. M2M applications and use cases currently under consideration by ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE are mainly focused on stationary nodes (machines) or at least control of node mobility is out of scope of M2M applications. However, the controllable node mobility willconstitute a core part of M2M communications. Robotic networks will belong to this class of M2M, where the position of nodes can be changed to meet the needs of M2M applications. Independently, in the automatic control and robotics community, there has been special interest in connecting multiple robots for effectively achieving the common mission of a group of autonomous robots. This area is known as networked robotics. The main background of this approach is that connecting robots with less intelligence would be more beneficial than a single isolated robot with full intelligence. In particular, there have been a group of researchers focusing on the behaviours of small animals to mimic their grouping patterns such as group navigation and communications. This special issue is dedicated to fundamentals and applications in the machine and robotic networks. The main emphasis is to introduce and to open new research horizon to the networking researchers. Those who are currently investigating protocols for inter-machine data exchange or designing a group of networked machines (including robots) are potential authors for this special issue. The comprehensive survey and forecasting of this inter-disciplinary area with deep insight on research challenges and business opportunities are also seriously considered. They have a considerable engineering, commercial and societal impact and pose numerous challenges to designers. One class of issues is the continuous offering of services in spite of various types of failures that are everyday events in networks. The increasing complexity, the participation of many different autonomous entities in the service provision, the lack of information, coordinated actions as well as governance makes this challenge increasingly difficult. In addition to a design of reliable network segments, server clusters etc., new technological issues like stability and failure management across heterogeneous autonomous systems arise. They also involve novel fields at the border of technology, business and society, like risk-awareness or influence of public policy. The goal of this issue is to present state of the art research contributions that focus on the reliable network-based services (RNS) provisioning. Contributions are invited from prospective authors with interests in the indicated special issue topics and related areas of application. All contributions should be of high quality, original, unpublished, and not submitted for publication elsewhere.
