Go beyond the theoretical limitations, and shed off the numerous assumptions about wireless systems. Present an operational prototype that has the potential to revolutionize wireless networking. Innovations can be at any layer, from physical to application. However, we particularly encourage innovations that span over multiple layers. The innovations must have wireless networking as its key topic. The demo must be demonstrated live, i.e., a presentation of a demo (powerpoint, video, etc.) only is not allowed. Also, we emphasize that the demo contest is not a forum to display commercial products. The demo contest will be judged by a panel from industry and academia based on the technical merit and relevance to the workshop. * The winners will take home cash prizes and bragging rights to award-winning research demonstrators. * CALL FOR POSTERS WiNTECH 2011 is seeking proposals for posters describing novel work in wireless network testbeds, measurements and characterizations. The areas of interest are the same as those listed in the technical call for papers. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. All submissions will be reviewed by the technical program committee and will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to workshop. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Poster/Demo submissions will be handled by emailing the writeup to the chair (tmelodia(a)buffalo.edu) with the following requirements: - A maximum of TWO 8.5″x11″ pages (including figures, tables, and references) - The write-up must be in two-column format, using 10-point size or greater and reasonable margins and must use PDF format - For demos, a third page should be included that lists the requirements for the demo at the workshop venue if the demo is selected. Aims and Scope: Unmanned systems are increasingly used in a large number of contexts to support humans in dangerous and difficult-to-reach environments, e.g. ground-based robotics, aerial sensor systems, space and underwater applications. In order to fulfill challenging tasks, visionary scenarios foresee unmanned vehicles to be organized in networked teams and even swarms. The corresponding wireless networks must provide highly reliable and delay-tolerant control links for the management of the behavior of the unmanned vehicles' behavior as well as data links to reliably transfer telemetry and sensor data respectively. At the same time, unmanned vehicles offer the capability to provide ad-hoc wireless networks, for example to compensate network outages in case of public events and large scale incidents. The successful first workshop at GLOBECOM 2010 focused mainly on unmanned aerial vehicles (www.wi-uav.org). This year's workshop addresses any kind of unmanned autonomous systems. The workshop aims to discuss most recent results of various international research initiatives on new communications networks enabling the efficient operation of teams of unmanned vehicles/systems operating on the ground, in the air, underwater and in space scenarios. Contributions addressing heterogeneous scenarios, e.g. combination of aerial and underwater devices are highly welcome. With the variety of services one can find in today's Internet, the requirements in rate, data volume and latency differ strongly. To maximize resource utilization and, at the same time, provide satisfying performance to all users, application layer knowledge is needed. As different resource allocation and adaptation mechanisms already exist in MAC, transport and application layer, an integral consideration of the problem space is required. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. Because large over-provisioning factors are economically unfeasible, similar questions on capacity sharing also arise in fixed access networks, such as high bandwidth passive optical networks or cable networks. The objective of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders of mobile and fixed access networks, the classic Internet world and of the application and transport community. We solicit presentations on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. We are especially looking forward to (possibly provocative) visionary presentations to foster a lively discussion about how to face the upcoming challenges in the future mobile Internet. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunication networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially,economically and yes, even psychologically.This special issue aims to advance understanding of research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers.In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical data of actual urban environments. With the variety of services one can find in today's Internet, the requirements in rate, data volume and latency differ strongly. To maximize resource utilization and, at the same time, provide satisfying performance to all users, application layer knowledge is needed. As different resource allocation and adaptation mechanisms already exist in MAC, transport and application layer, an integral consideration of the problem space is required. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. Because large over-provisioning factors are economically unfeasibly, similar questions on capacity sharing also arise in fixed access networks, such as high bandwidth passive optical networks or cable networks. The objective of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders of mobile and fixed access networks, the classic Internet world and of the application and transport community. We solicit presentations on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. We are especially looking forward to (possibly provocative) visionary presentations to foster a lively discussion about how to face the upcoming challenges in the future mobile Internet. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to * Application-layer adaption for mobile services * Transport layer solutions and possible interactions with cellular/fixed access networks * Context-aware resource allocation & cross-layer adaptation * QoE and fairness definitions, metrics and evaluation * Data traffic characteristics in fixed and mobile Internet * Economic aspects on capacity sharing and business models * Similarities and differences of capacity sharing in mobile and fixed access networks * Related standardization activities and projects Submission Information ---------------------- Please inform the workshop organizers by email to CapacitySharingWS(a)ikr.uni-stuttgart.de about title and abstract (max. 1 page) of your planned presentation. September 2011 an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München der GI-Fachgruppe "Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme" (KuVS) aufmerksam machen. Ziel des Fachgespräches ist, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aber auch Vertretern der Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem intensiven Gedankenaustausch zu geben. Grundlage dazu sind Vorträge zu verschiedenen Forschungsarbeiten aus diesem Bereich. Nach den erfolgreichen Treffen in den vergangenen Jahren findet in diesem Jahr das achte Treffen in München statt. Teilnehmer, die ihre Forschungsarbeit auf dem Treffen präsentieren wollen, möchten wir zur Einreichung eines Abstracts aufrufen (1 Seite, auf deutsch oder englisch). Recent advances of wireless vehicular communications supporting vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications have become a cornerstone of ITS. Wireless vehicular communications for ITS is one of the most interesting and active research topics, which is requiring vital efforts from both the industry and the academic. In particular, studies on network routing and communication algorithm for V2V and V2I have posed various challenges. Most of the current works on V2V and V2I communications mainly focus on non-IP data communications. These challenges require developing new network routing protocols and design communication algorithms, especially for IP data communications. This special issue is intended to bring together the industry and academic working on different aspects related to ITS and to highlight the state-of-art research on ITS.
