SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger font, single-spaced). The following information must be provided on the first page: o Paper title o Full names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors o An abstract (up to 150 words) o Five to ten keywords/phrases o A footnote with the indication of the corresponding author, plus the complete address, phone and fax numbers of the corresponding author Papers should be submitted by emailing them to: llilien(a)wmich.edu Each received submission will be confirmed, usually within no more than two workdays. 3. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content - and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities....indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven't been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following. *Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular networks * System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and mobile applications * Real-world measurements and characterization * Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and mobile applications * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks * Testbeddesign and implementation * Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the PHY layer to applications * Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater networking * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks * Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless networking systems MobiCom’11 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiComprogram committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. In such approaches, the principal paradigm is not host-to-host communication as in the current Internet architecture. Instead, an increasing demand for highly scalable and efficient distribution of content has motivated the development of architectures that focus on information objects, their properties, and receiver interest in the network to achieve efficient and reliable distribution of such objects. Corresponding network architectures can leverage in-network storage, multiparty communication through replication and interaction models such as publish-subscribe to provide general platforms for communication services that are today only available in dedicated systems such as peer-to-peer overlays and proprietary content-distribution networks. Important research topics for ICN include: naming and addressing (how to name information objects, how to represent location information), routing and resolution (deciding on how to forward "interest" in information and actual information objects, whether and how to resolve information object names to lower layer identifiers during that process), resource management (implications of in-network caching and paradigms such as receiver-orientation to resource sharing, congestion control etc.) and security (privacy, data protection and key distribution have to be adapted to the new communication models). This workshop invites original contributions on Information-Centric Networking architecture topics as well as on results from implementations and experimentation. PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ADAMUS 2011 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. Papers must be written in English and should not exceed 6 pages. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities.indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they havent been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. The central element of this vision is the existence of a network of interconnected objects (from books to cars, from electrical appliances to food) that will be able not only to obtain information from their surroundings and interact with the physical world, but also to use existing Internet standards to provide services. However, security is extremely important for achieving this goal. As this worldwide network of interconnected objects can be exploited anywhere by anyone and anytime, it is necessary to enhance it with strong security foundations able to give birth to a world-changing paradigm. In fact, in order to adequately protect the IoT, there are plenty of factors that must be taken into account. For example, the protection of the different building blocks, the creation of interoperable security mechanisms, the development of new services that allow multiple entities (e.g., human beings, machines, objects) to cooperate with each other, and the management of all the information produced by those interactions. This special issue is proposed to cover research results and innovation case studies on security for the Internet of Things. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. In cooperative networking, individual network nodes can cooperate to implement network goals in a coordinated way, and the cooperation can take place in a cross-layer fashion. Successful cooperative networking can prompt the development of advanced wireless networks to cost-effectively provide multimedia services and applications such as telecommuting, video conferencing, interactive media, real-time Internet games, etc., anytime, anywhere. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative networking on the cross-layer design beyond cooperative transmissions are not well-understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies include: theoretical tools to guide the design of cooperative networking systems, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, new protocol design for cooperative networking, and compatible deployment of cooperative networking over the existing infrastructure. This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research and development on cooperative networking. The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. The MobiCom conference series serves as a highly selective, premier international forum addressing networks, systems, algorithms, and applications that support mobile computers and wireless networks. PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research related to the theory and practice of mobile computing and wireless networking that pertain to the layer two or above of the OSI protocol stack. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following. *Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular networks * System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and mobile applications * Real-world measurements and characterization * Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and mobile applications * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks * Testbed design and implementation * Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the PHY layer to applications * Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater networking * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks * Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless networking systems MobiCom’11 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to posters where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2011 Poster and Demo committee will review all demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2011 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2011, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. (Please contact the poster chairs if this restriction represents a hardship.) Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program is sponsored by Microsoft Research. Winners will advance to ACM Grand Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the winners of other ACM conferences. Why Should You Submit a Poster? This is a great chance especially for students to obtain interesting and valuable feedback on ongoing research from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. Travel Grants for Student Posters Students who are submitting posters are highly encouraged to examine if they are eligible for student travel grants. What is a Poster? We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm), to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct) that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques, results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract describing in text what the poster would present. What and Where to Submit Please submit a two-page abstract on the work to https://sigcomm2011posters.cs.wisc.edu. The decision will be taken primarily by reading the abstract. Submissions are single blind, so please include authors' names and affiliation. Content: The abstract should clearly state: • the problem being addressed; • what makes this problem interesting, important, and difficult; • your approach to the problem; • the key contribution In the final version of the abstract, you should include a URL that provides additional information about your work to the attendees. Formatting: Prepare your abstract using ACM conference style, modified to 10pt. Concretely, two columns, minimum 10pt times with 0.75 inch margins and 1/3 inch space between columns.
