Besides the regular conference program, MobiCom 2011 will also include a set of workshops, panels, research demonstrations, and a poster session that includes the ACM Student Research Competition. PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research related to the theory and practice of mobile computing and wireless networking that pertain to the layer two or above of the OSI protocol stack. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following. * Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular networks * System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and mobile applications * Real-world measurements and characterization * Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and mobile applications * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks * Testbed design and implementation * Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the PHY layer to applications * Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater networking * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks * Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless networking systems MobiCom’11 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. It has been estimated that information and communication technologies (ICT) account for about 600 billion kWh of electricity usage annually, about 400 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year. Therefore, there is great emerging interest in the design of networks which are energy-efficient, reusable, and yield a lower carbon footprint. There are many other ways in which communication networks can be deployed to enable initiatives pertaining to environmental sustainability; for instance, networks can be deployed to monitor air pollution, or manage energy utilization of buildings. And in a different, but related notion of sustainability, some application require the deployment and management of networks that can be sustainably operated over long periods, such as networks for monitoring earthquakes and tsunamis. The widespread use of complex, spectrum efficient techniques to support such high data volumes, the demand for higher data rates and the ever-increasing number of wireless users translate to rapidly rising power consumption. Currently consuming 3% of the energy and causing 2% of the CO2 emissions globally, the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) industries are facing an increase in associated energy consumption of 16-20% per year. Furthermore, the energy costs for mobile operators can be as high as half of their annual operating budgets. The foregoing considerations highlight the urgent need for focusing on energy efficiency. While there is much leeway for developing energy efficient and low power solutions for wireless networks, such as based on cognitive radios, multi-hop relaying, cooperative communications and MIMO systems, today’s communication networks are not much considering energy consumption issues into their design or development. The main reason is that this topic is not yet a focus of practical work and so far no solid research work has given support and evidence for any technique of reducing the overall system energy consumption. This Special Issue will assemble high-quality research articles as well as comprehensive survey papers on recent technological advances in the field of Green Radio Communication Networks. These contributions will serve as valuable references and trend indicators for researchers and engineers from both industry and academia. It draws upon a broad array of disciplines that span security, communications and networking. In addition to technical research papers, the technical program of ACM WiSec 2011 will include a Poster and Demonstration Session to provide a venue for presenting work that is at a nascent state of development or for demonstrating new technologies that are relevant to wireless networking and security. The WiSec Program Committee is encouraging both academic and industrial submissions, with the objective of exchanging ideas and receiving timely feedback from other members of the research community. Submissions to the Poster and Demonstration Session will be evaluated based on technical merit and innovation as well as their potential to stimulate interesting discussions and exchange of ideas. Ideally, the demos should allow participants to try things out themselves. Submission Instructions for Posters and Demonstrations For the posters, authors should submit a two page extended abstract that provides sufficient technical detail so that the evaluation committee can assess the technical merit of the work. The poster abstracts do not have to present completed work, but at the same time should provide enough concrete evidence to support the potential and validity of the proposed ideas. For demos, authors should to submit a two page extended abstract that describes the technology that they have developed, the relevance to wireless networking and security, and which also highlights the novelty of the prototype. For demonstrations, the abstract should also contain an extra page that clearly describes what conference participants will be able to see or do during the demonstration. Demonstrations should have a research component and, in particular, should not push a commercial agenda. Both types of abstracts should follow the WiSec formatting guidelines (with a 2 page limit + 1 extra page for demos), and authors should refer to the main WiSec website for instructions related to formatting. Abstracts of accepted posters and demos will be distributed to conference participants and selected abstracts will be published in the ACM SIGMOBILE MC2R magazine. The demo session will have a table per demo, power and wireless connectivity available. If a demonstration requires special arrangements, please note them in a separate email to the session chair parallel to submission. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. Without the introduction of alternative solutions to reduce the cost of conventional systems such as hospitalization and specialized institutions, the system will most likely collapse. For a long time, information and communications technologies (ICT) have been recognized as part of the solution to create new cost-effective solutions to reduce the cost of healthcare. For example, the Ubiquitous (U) Health Smart Home, a home equipped with ICT to support people directly in their home, has been identified by governments and medical institutions, as an important step towards financial savings, as well as a technologically and socially acceptable solution to maintain the current health welfare system. The aim of the Ubiquitous Health smart home is to allow elderly and disabled persons to continue to live a more independent life as long as possible in their own home while receiving the required medical and safety assistance. Doctors and other Healthcare providers can continuously access their health status or situation to detect as early as possible through a flexible remote access any anomaly so they can immediately intervene. With the help of the U-Health smart home, doctors, nurses and other health-related personnel do not need being physically close to the patients and reversely reducing therefore the load on hospitals and specialized institutions while ensuring the safety of the patients. While this concept had some difficulties to be fully realized, in recent years, tremendous advances in low-power electronics, nano/bio sensor technologies along with development of wired and wireless network technologies are facilitating the development of such solutions which are more and more requested by our societies. These advances have led to the development of small-sized wireless medical and environmental sensors that are capable of very efficiently monitoring physiological parameters of humans as well at the living environment. Further, advances in sensing and communication technologies, along with advances software engineering, make it possible today to build homes where healthcare providers could deploy novel health and safety applications. These solutions not only will improve the well-being and quality of health of people in their own home but could also benefit other places where the same technologies can be deployed such as smart spaces and smart hospitals. This special issue aims to gather the latest results in this area of Ubiquitous Healthcare Smarthome, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in the design, implementation and evaluation of supporting design, hardware, software, algorithms, protocols and applications. Practical experiences, extensive experimentation, and lessons learned from deployment of real prototype systems, along with field trials, are welcome. Many in the field argued that the Internet protocols were impractical for the resource constrained devices that were being embedded in the physical world; that the end-to-end architecture was inappropriate for the localized algorithms and in-network processing required to achieve robustness and scalability; and that an architecture designed to accommodate a wide range of applications was unnecessary as sensor networks would be tailored to specific target applications. In the past couple years, the Smart Grid push has placed a pressing need to deploy networks that have an unprecedented scale when compared to existing IP networks (e.g., 10 million end points within a single network targeted by utility manufacturers), allow multi-vendor interoperability, and utilize low-cost communication devices. Sensor networks are considered a natural fit for Smart Grid applications such as Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Home Area Networking (HAN). To address this need, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is working with researchers and practitioners to standardize protocols, such as 6LoWPAN and ROLL, for constrained networks. This workshop solicits articles that describe early experiences with such standards, papers that describe sensor network applications built on top of these standards, as well as research proposals regarding how to extend the standards. Submission of shorter papers is strongly encouraged whenever appropriate. Papers must conform to the Springer LNCS style (in which the text area per page is a little smaller than 5" x 7 3/4"). Follow the "Information for Authors" link at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. Papers not following these instructions risk being rejected without consideration of their merits. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap with papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. HotPETs As with the last several years, part of the symposium will be devoted to HotPETs the hottest, most exciting research ideas still in a formative state presented in 10 20 minutes for discussion and feedback from the audience. Submissions need not be technical in nature; we welcome challenges from other fields whereby our audience may learn about real world needs that require new research and solutions. Our intent is to bring new questions, approaches, and problems to our privacy community for discussion, feedback, and consideration of new approaches based on the diverse expertise of our attendees. Submissions to HotPETs may be in either a 1 to 4 page extended abstract format, or a full length paper format. We prefer extended abstract format, and all accepted full length submissions must be converted to extended abstract form prior to the camera ready deadline. Successful submissions will have their abstracts printed for hard copy distribution at the event. The abstracts will not be part of the PETS proceedings in order to ensure authors may subsequently publish the expanded work, either in a future PETS or elsewhere. Panels We also invite proposals of up to 2 pages for panel discussions or other relevant presentations. Technical Area With recent advances in technologies for wireless access (e.g., WiFi, 3G, and 4G) and mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, netbooks, and tablets), mobility has become a fundamental characteristic of today's Internet. Yet, basic architectural issues related to mobility such as efficient mobility management, the locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security, and various operational, deployment concerns are still in their early stages of exploration. Moreover, the Internet architecture itself, its end-to-end principles, and business models require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet. For instance, an appropriate system that allows communicating with a mobile host requires addressing several fundamental issues with the Internet architecture, such as ability to locate the mobile host/service, preserving ongoing communications upon changes of locations, as well as seamless and secure handover management. As another example, the emerging wireless technologies such as those in the 60 GHz and whitespace bands may pose additional challenges since they may introduce design principles different from the packet-switched Internet. MobiArch 2011 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and practitioners, in exploration of recent advances in architectures, protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on various mobility issues over the Internet, with an emphasis on wireless infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile network performance evaluation and modelling, multi-homing, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations. Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in a mobile network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary contacts among the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as well as providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking research community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. Without the introduction of alternative solutions to reduce the cost of conventional systems such as hospitalization and specialized institutions, the system will most likely collapse. For a long time, information and communications technologies (ICT) have been recognized as part of the solution to create new cost-effective solutions to reduce the cost of healthcare. For example, the Ubiquitous (U) Health Smart Home, a home equipped with ICT to support people directly in their home, has been identified by governments and medical institutions, as an important step towards financial savings, as well as a technologically and socially acceptable solution to maintain the current health welfare system. The aim of the Ubiquitous Health smart home is to allow elderly and disabled persons to continue to live a more independent life as long as possible in their own home while receiving the required medical and safety assistance. Doctors and other Healthcare providers can continuously access their health status or situation to detect as early as possible through a flexible remote access any anomaly so they can immediately intervene. With the help of the U-Health smart home, doctors, nurses and other health-related personnel do not need being physically close to the patients and reversely reducing therefore the load on hospitals and specialized institutions while ensuring the safety of the patients. While this concept had some difficulties to be fully realized, in recent years, tremendous advances in low-power electronics, nano/bio sensor technologies along with development of wired and wireless network technologies are facilitating the development of such solutions which are more and more requested by our societies. These advances have led to the development of small-sized wireless medical and environmental sensors that are capable of very efficiently monitoring physiological parameters of humans as well at the living environment. Further, advances in sensing and communication technologies, along with advances software engineering, make it possible today to build homes where healthcare providers could deploy novel health and safety applications. These solutions not only will improve the well-being and quality of health of people in their own home but could also benefit other places where the same technologies can be deployed such as smart spaces and smart hospitals. This special issue aims to gather the latest results in this area of Ubiquitous Healthcare Smarthome, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in the design, implementation and evaluation of supporting design, hardware, software, algorithms, protocols and applications. Practical experiences, extensive experimentation, and lessons learned from deployment of real prototype systems, along with field trials, are welcome. The aim of the SASO conference series is to provide a forum for the foundations of a principled approach to engineering systems, networks and services based on self-adaptation and self-organization. To this end, the meeting aims to attract participants with different backgrounds, to foster cross-pollination between research fields, and to expose and discuss innovative theories, frameworks, methodologies, tools, and applications. The complexity of current and emerging computing systems has led the software engineering, distributed systems and management communities to look for inspiration in diverse fields (e.g., complex systems, control theory, artificial intelligence, sociology, and biology) to find new ways of designing and managing networks, systems and services. In this endeavor, self-organization and self-adaptation have emerged as two promising interrelated facets of a paradigm shift. The fifth edition of the SASO conference emphasizes the interconnection of research between and within fields: application of self-* principles or systems to solve real-world problems or advance research in other research domains; advances in self-* mechanisms or analyses with potentially broad application; combination and interconnection of self-* systems; and extraction of new self-* principles or mechanisms from the study of natural or engineered systems. Self-adaptive systems work in a top down manner. They evaluate their own global behavior and change it when the evaluation indicates that they are not accomplishing what they were intended to do, or when better functionality or performance is possible. A challenge is often to identify how to change specific behaviors to achieve the desired improvement. Self-organizing systems work bottom up. They are composed of a large number of components that interact locally according to typically simple rules. The global behavior of the system emerges from these local interactions. Here, a challenge is often to predict and control the resulting global behavior. The topics of interest to SASO include, but are not limited to: * Theories, frameworks and methods for self-* systems * Robustness and dependability of self-* systems * Control of emergent properties in self-* systems * Biologically, socially, and physically inspired self-* systems * Management and control of self-* systems * Design and engineering for self-* systems (self-organization, self-adaptation, self-management, self-monitoring, self-tuning, self-repair, self-configuration, etc.) * Applications and experiences with self-* systems PAPERS *********** Contributions must present novel theoretical or experimental results, or practical approaches and experiences in building or deploying real-world systems, applications, tools, frameworks, etc. Contributions contrasting different approaches for engineering a given family of systems, or demonstrating the applicability of a certain approach for different systems are particularly encouraged. In addition to normal papers, authors are invited to submit "framework" papers. These papers are intended to facilitate dissemination of knowledge through and beyond the community. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide in Europe, US and Asia. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVEC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the past successful WiVEC editions in 2007, 2008, and 2010, the fourth IEEE WiVEC symposium will be co-located with the 74th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2011 Fall, and will take place at the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco on the 5th and 6th of September 2011. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVEC and VTC events. All accepted papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the VTC 2011-Fall conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. Note: VTC Fall editions are traditionally located in North America, while VTC Spring is located in other areas of the world. Since WiVEC was originally launched co-located with VTC Fall editions, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society decided that WiVEC would take place every year and a half in order to ensure that the conference is alternatively co-located with VTC Fall and Spring editions. This resulted in that there was no WiVEC edition in 2009.
