Key characteristics envisaged are powerful network infrastructures, numerous applications and services, and the evolution of existing and the emergence of new business models, compared to today. The infrastructure will be highly pervasive: people, smart objects, machines and the surrounding space, all embedding devices (e.g., sensors, RFID tags, etc.), will result in a highly decentralized environment of resources, interconnected by dynamic Networks of Networks. These characteristics entail that management in the FI era will have additional complexity to support, which derives from the need to handle multiple, demanding and changing situations for the provision of QoE/QoS levels, the exploitation of the infrastructure for increased efficiency in QoE/QoS provision, and the support of diverse interactions, objectives and policies designated by business model aspects. Autonomic systems are seen as the most viable direction for realizing the FI era, at first due to their self-management and learning features. Self-management is essential for fast adaptations to changing situations. Learning can increase the reliability of decisions through knowledge, for instance, on situations encountered, on how they were addressed, and on the efficiency of the action plan. This opens the opportunity towards multiple and essentially heterogeneous management systems on top of a common managed infrastructure in both fixed and mobile Internet. This opportunity clearly leads to reductions in the OPEX and CAPEX, which need to be quantified, but also calls for a research on future Unified Management Framework that must allow diversity and evolution of business model, as well as Total Illusion of Ownership of shared infrastructure. In line with the targets of cost reduction is the achievement of "green" targets by the management systems. Autonomic systems call for the design, development and validation of functionality in the area of context acquisition and reasoning, the derivation and evaluation of policies, distributed optimization techniques, and learning for acquiring and sharing knowledge and experience. *Scope* Research is producing results in the area of autonomics/self-management. Now is the appropriate time for taking the essential steps that will show that the technology reaches maturity and, therefore, is closer to the market. In this respect, the special issue solicits innovative and high-quality work, as well as general, survey-like papers on relevant areas. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: - Future Internet visions and initiatives, requirements for management, business drivers for facilitating adoption of autonomics; reference models for the evolvable FI architecture. - New business models for a sustainable Future Internet. - Unified Management Framework: components, patterns, interfaces and systems; Consolidation and federation of approaches; Principles for network governance and re-defined human-to-network interactions. - Design of self-managed networks. - Performance evaluation of autonomic network intelligence; functionality and results on context reasoning, policies, distributed optimization, machine learning. - Cooperation protocols, knowledge/experience management and sharing. - Prototypes, experiments, trials, pilots, and guidelines for migration or transition to an autonomic Future Internet. - End-to-end validation with respect to QoE/QoS offered, cost factors, green targets, convergence, coherence, scalability. - Stability of autonomic solutions, approaches for establishing trust and certification. - Standardization initiatives. *Manuscript Submission* Articles should be of tutorial in nature and authors must follow the IEEE Network guidelines for preparation of the manuscript and its format. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements for e-Health systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable e-Health systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of ICT is necessary (i.e., bioengineering, wearable sensors, wireless communications, data fusion and processing, decision support systems and others). This is fundamental to make e-Health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective e-health systems. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to E-health, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content - and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities....indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven't been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following. *Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular networks * System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and mobile applications * Real-world measurements and characterization * Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and mobile applications * Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks * Testbeddesign and implementation * Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the PHY layer to applications * Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater networking * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks * Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless networking systems MobiCom’11 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiComprogram committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. In such approaches, the principal paradigm is not host-to-host communication as in the current Internet architecture. Instead, an increasing demand for highly scalable and efficient distribution of content has motivated the development of architectures that focus on information objects, their properties, and receiver interest in the network to achieve efficient and reliable distribution of such objects. Corresponding network architectures can leverage in-network storage, multiparty communication through replication and interaction models such as publish-subscribe to provide general platforms for communication services that are today only available in dedicated systems such as peer-to-peer overlays and proprietary content-distribution networks. Important research topics for ICN include: naming and addressing (how to name information objects, how to represent location information), routing and resolution (deciding on how to forward "interest" in information and actual information objects, whether and how to resolve information object names to lower layer identifiers during that process), resource management (implications of in-network caching and paradigms such as receiver-orientation to resource sharing, congestion control etc.) and security (privacy, data protection and key distribution have to be adapted to the new communication models). This workshop invites original contributions on Information-Centric Networking architecture topics as well as on results from implementations and experimentation. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities.indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they havent been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. The central element of this vision is the existence of a network of interconnected objects (from books to cars, from electrical appliances to food) that will be able not only to obtain information from their surroundings and interact with the physical world, but also to use existing Internet standards to provide services. However, security is extremely important for achieving this goal. As this worldwide network of interconnected objects can be exploited anywhere by anyone and anytime, it is necessary to enhance it with strong security foundations able to give birth to a world-changing paradigm. In fact, in order to adequately protect the IoT, there are plenty of factors that must be taken into account. For example, the protection of the different building blocks, the creation of interoperable security mechanisms, the development of new services that allow multiple entities (e.g., human beings, machines, objects) to cooperate with each other, and the management of all the information produced by those interactions. This special issue is proposed to cover research results and innovation case studies on security for the Internet of Things. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * New security problems in the context of the IoT. * Privacy risks and data management problems. * Identifying, authenticating, and authorizing entities. * Development of trust frameworks for secure collaboration. * New cryptographic primitives for constrained "things". * Connecting heterogeneous ecosystems and technologies. * Legal Challenges and Governance Issues. * Resilience to external and internal attacks. * Context-Aware security. * Providing protection to an IP-connected IoT. * Web services security and other application-layer issues. * Distributed policy enforcement and rights management. * Usability of Security and Privacy Technologies in the context of the IoT. Submitted papers must represent high-quality and previously unpublished works. Original research papers are solicited in all areas on security for the Internet of Things.
