Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. The PURBA 2011 Workshop fosters discussions covering topics such as (but not limited to): - Pervasive computing applications for urban planning and design - Mining of data collected from urban networks e.g. transportation, energy - Urban mobility and geo-localization - Multi-source urban information integration - Real-time urban information processing - City-related knowledge infrastructure and computational models - Case studies and applications of mixed urban sensing and mining - Analysis of social networks in urban space - Middleware for mobile urban computing - Context-aware systems for urban space - Smart cities - Intelligent transportation system - Urban application demos and visualizations - Wireless sensor networks, mobile devices, and social network sensing - Security, privacy, reputation, and trust issues in urban computing - Impact of pervasive technologies in urban space e.g. social, economical, and psychological. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger font, single-spaced). In cooperative networking, individual network nodes can cooperate to implement network goals in a coordinated way, and the cooperation can take place in a cross-layer fashion. Successful cooperative networking can prompt the development of advanced wireless networks to cost-effectively provide multimedia services and applications such as telecommuting, video conferencing, interactive media, real-time Internet games, etc., anytime, anywhere. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative networking on the cross-layer design beyond cooperative transmissions are not well-understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies include: theoretical tools to guide the design of cooperative networking systems, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, new protocol design for cooperative networking, and compatible deployment of cooperative networking over the existing infrastructure. This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research and development on cooperative networking. Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles, reflecting various aspects of cooperative networking are encouraged. The topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to: * MAC/link layer issues such as adaptive access connection and scheduling; * Cooperative routing at the network layer, transport layer issues such as multi-homing transport layer protocols, end-to-end flow and congestion control; * Application layer such as peer-to-peer system design over cooperative networks; * Cross layer design and optimization, and heterogeneous QoS provisioning; * Topology control and mobility management; * Resource management; * Security support to complement/enhance cooperative networking; * Information theoretic aspects, asymptotic performance analysis, coding schemes and scaling law; * System modeling and experimental study such as those in cellular network, vehicular network, femtocell, and ad hoc/mesh network; * System level topics such as incentive for cooperation, and economics issues related to cooperative networks. The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The feature issue will consider original survey and research articles written in a tutorial style. Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in a mobile network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary contacts among the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as well as providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking research community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to posters where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2011 Poster and Demo committee will review all demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2011 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2011, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. (Please contact the poster chairs if this restriction represents a hardship.) Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program is sponsored by Microsoft Research. We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm), to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct) that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques, results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract describing in text what the poster would present. What and Where to Submit Please submit a two-page abstract on the work to https://sigcomm2011posters.cs.wisc.edu. The decision will be taken primarily by reading the abstract. Submissions are single blind, so please include authors' names and affiliation. Content: The abstract should clearly state: • the problem being addressed; • what makes this problem interesting, important, and difficult; • your approach to the problem; • the key contribution In the final version of the abstract, you should include a URL that provides additional information about your work to the attendees. Meanwhile, high speed vehicles such as airplanes and high speed trains play an increasingly important role in people’s lives, since they provide a relatively stable and spacious environment for long distance travel. As a result, there will be a strong demand for broadband wireless communications (BWC) for high speed vehicles to provide information and onboard entertainment services to passengers. BWC is also needed in vehicle control systems for operational information such as fault sensor measurements and diagnostics, video surveillance, and so on. Interesting research areas and various challenges arise when designing BWC systems for high speed vehicles. For example, a new network structure is needed since a direct transmission signal between the passenger and infrastructure-base-station experiences serious deterioration when traveling through the speeding vehicle. Distributed antenna and radio over fiber can be employed for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Moreover, due to the lack of accurate channel information, innovative radio resource allocation schemes are also needed at the infrastructure-base-station to assign resources to high speed vehicles. The fast movement of high speed vehicles through cellular networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs, degrading the user experience. This prompts the need for designing fast and reliable handover and random access schemes. In addition, novel physical layer techniques of BWC in high speed mobile environments need to be considered. In particular, there is a strong need to evaluate the effect of Doppler spread and revisit the noncoherent coding, modulation and MIMO schemes. Therefore, BWC for high speed vehicles is a pressing research topic that has huge applications. It is imperative to develop the key techniques enabling BWC for high speed vehicles. The goal of this issue is to bring together the most updated research contributions in this area. We are soliciting high quality, original and unpublished work in BWC for high speed vehicles, especially those pushing the envelope in terms of vehicle speed and communication bandwidth. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective e-health systems. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. Mobile software advances just as quickly with researchers and practitioners migrating from desktop-centric to smartphone-centric applications. Research in this area is driven by the all-mobile lifestyle, consumer demand and advances in hardware design and communication networks. The goal of this special issue is to explore application-layer research and development in mobile computing and solicit high-quality research works outlining application development and industry status and trends. All articles should consider the practical application of the idea advanced through case studies, experiments, or systematic comparisons with other approaches already in practice. Examples of complex networks are found in living organisms, in engineering systems, as well as in social networks. Most of the real-world systems have the required degree of complexity to be called "complex systems". Complexity may have to do with the intricate dynamics of the interacting components, with the non-trivial properties of the underlying network topology, or with the sheer size of the system itself. Despite the numerous workshops and conferences related to network science, it is still a set of loosely interacting communities. Those communities would benefit from better interactions. Simplex aims at triggering different computer science communities (e.g. communication networks, distributed systems) to propose research areas and topics that should be tackled from the network science perspective. We also seek contributions from network science that are relevant to solve practical computer science problems. Two types of contributions are foreseen from prospective authors. The first type would consist of use-cases of theoretical tools and methods to solve practical problems. Such contributions should be as usable as possible by practitioners in the related field. The second type of contributions would come from practitioners that have identified a problem that may be solved by tools from network sciences. The point of such contributions is to make the network sciences community aware of the importance of a high-impact problem, and to suggest means by which the problem may be solved by the network science community. Both contributions should stimulate interaction between theoreticians and practitioners, and also have high potential impact in either field. This workshop concentrates on such network layer problems as data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed approaches where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes. The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on various aspects of localized algorithms and protocols in this rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks. Topics of Interest The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · Localized unicast and multicast routing protocols · Localized broadcasting algorithms · Localized QoS communication protocols · Localized geocasting protocols · Localized clustering algorithms · Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks · Localized auto-configuration and network formation algorithms · Topology construction and maintenance based on local information · Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient communication · Relative positioning algorithms based on local information · Network graph properties supporting localized protocols · Localized algorithms for data management and query · Localized incentive schemes for selfish wireless networks · Localized algorithms in delay/disruption tolerant networks · Security based on local information in wireless sensor networks · Bounds analysis in localized solutions · Worst and average case analysis in localized algorithms Paper submission Papers are solicited in the IEEE proceedings format with up to six (6) pages. Papers in PDF format must be submitted via Easy Chair by using the following URL: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=localgos10. All submissions must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. By enabling vehicles to communicate with each other via Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) as well as with roadside base stations via Roadside-to-Vehicle Communication (RVC), vehicular networks will contribute to safer and more efficient roads by providing timely information to drivers and concerned authorities. This symposium is intended to serve as a forum and bring together the researchers and engineers in both academia and industry to exchange ideas, share experiences, and report original work about all aspects of vehicular communications. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of vehicular communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Vehicle-to-vehicle/roadside/Internet communication Experiences from real-world deployments and field trials Innovative safety and non-safety applications Middleware support Security, privacy and trust Medium access and power control protocols Routing protocols Cross-layer design Mobility models and vehicular traffic models Simulation tools Network management Channel modelling Antenna technologies Standarization efforts Radio resource management Quality of service Data dissemination and delay-tolerant networking techniques Vehicular sensor networks Vehicular social networks Submitted papers will be reviewed by three independent experts in the field. Proceedings of the symposium will be published together with those of other IWCMC symposia and workshops, and will be available in digital format in IEEE Explore. Selected papers will be further considered for possible publication in journal special issues. SUBMISSION: Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 6 camera-ready pages (in 10 pt font, double column, US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches, IEEE format), including text, figures and references. Authors should use only standard fonts, i.e. Times Roman, Courier, Symbol, Helvetica or equivalent. Papers must be submitted electronically via EDAS (http://edas.info/N9425). All papers must include title, complete contact information of all authors and abstract on the cover page. The corresponding author must be clearly identified.
