An emerging trend is the collaboration of miniature devices to achieve a common goal. Representative examples include wireless sensor networks, pervasive computing and embedded systems. Along this trend, the notion of Cooperating Objects collectively refers to embedded computing devices equipped with communication as well as sensing or actuation capabilities, able to cooperate and organize themselves autonomously into networks to achieve a common task. As such, Cooperating Objects envision a single, coherent system formed by a wide range of devices, including those from the areas mentioned above. The complexity germane to the interaction inside and across networks of Cooperating Objects presents a rich set of research questions, and entails a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as networking, software engineering, and control theory. CONET 2011 will provide a discussion forum for researchers, aimed at fostering synergy and convergence of complementary areas towards the vision of networks of Cooperating Objects. Work-in-progress systems, provocative ideas, and position papers paving the road towards such synergy and convergence are particularly welcome. Wireless networking affects a number of fields, including healthcare, environmental, home appliances, education, military applications, among others. In general, designing, developing and testing of an efficient wireless network protocol is a great challenge for the researchers in these areas. Moreover, the development of an application specific protocol in any of these fields depends on various factors including the security, miniaturization, application constraints, hardware constraints, and energy requirements. The traditional trend in wireless network protocol design and development is towards maximization of the performance observed by the end-user, in terms of perceived throughput, delay, QoS, etc. Nevertheless, the rate of advances in battery technology continues to lag behind that of semiconductor technology, which is still well predicted by the celebrated Moore’s law. This imbalance in the rate of advances creates a gap between the energy a wireless network needs to operate and the battery capacity that powers its nodes. Hence, the requirement of Energy-Efficiency appears as an extremely important property of new protocols for wireless networks with battery-powered mobile nodes. Moreover, Energy-Efficiency is the tool to realize the vision of green wireless networks, which are deemed important these days due to the increasing share of wireless systems of the total energy expended in communications and networking systems. Energy-awareness contributes to achieving the task of energy-efficiency, as it provides the ability to networking protocols to adapt their operation according to the energy reserves of the network nodes and thus increase the energy-efficiency of a system. The objective of this special issue is to report state-of-the art results in energy-aware wireless networking protocols by welcoming contributions originating from both academic and industrial research. These should be original contributions solicited in relevant areas of energy-efficient wireless networking protocols. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. CFP: With mobile terminals becoming the primary Internet devices for most of the people in the world and smartphone users generating on average 10 times more traffic than other users, it is critical that Telco operators and ISPs adopt smarter traffic management and pricing strategies. Current forecasts expect mobile data traffic to grow by 300-500 times more over the next 10 years, whereas the capacity of cellular infrastructure only doubles every 2 years. By 2020, more than half of the revenue in the global broadband industry is likely to be from two business models: wholesale and .two-sided. fees for improved access capacity and quality. Those models require the enforcement of stringent policy control mechanisms for bandwidth management, QoS and service level agreements, according to subscriber policies with real-time perspective on usage, location, device and user type, radio access technology, network capacity and topology. In this area, several research challenges are still to be addressed: . How can the network be made service-, state- and/or context-aware in order to apply specific policies to enhance the end user experience (QoE)? . How can the service provider bridge QoE and QoS, and change the QoS level based on spending limits? . How can different IP flows of the same packet data network (PDN) be routed via different accesses? In addition, how is it possible to move IP flows of the same PDN from one access to another for seamless WLAN offload or for usage of WLAN access to connect to Internet without traversing operator's core network? . How can selected IP traffic be offloaded from the cellular infrastructure and save transmission costs? . How can mobile networks be optimized for mass machine-type communications/applications? . How to optimize the utilization of Digital Dividend (unprecedented amount of spectrum that becomes available as a result of the switchover from analog to digital terrestrial TV)? This timely feature topic issue of IEEE Communications Magazine will bring together researchers from industry, academia and standardization bodies to present and analyze the above challenging issues in the important area of managing traffic for existing and future mobile broadband networks, i.e. within and beyond the existing standardization frameworks (3GPP, 3GPP2, IEEE 802.16, etc.). Key characteristics envisaged are powerful network infrastructures, numerous applications and services, and the evolution of existing and the emergence of new business models, compared to today. Autonomic systems are seen as the most viable direction for realizing the FI era, at first due to their self-management and learning features. Self-management is essential for fast adaptations to changing situations. Learning can increase the reliability of decisions through knowledge, for instance, on situations encountered, on how they were addressed, and on the efficiency of the action plan. This opens the opportunity towards multiple and essentially heterogeneous management systems on top of a common managed infrastructure in both fixed and mobile Internet. This opportunity clearly leads to reductions in the OPEX and CAPEX, which need to be quantified, but also calls for a research on future Unified Management Framework that must allow diversity and evolution of business model, as well as Total Illusion of Ownership of shared infrastructure. In line with the targets of cost reduction is the achievement of "green" targets by the management systems. Autonomic systems call for the design, development and validation of functionality in the area of context acquisition and reasoning, the derivation and evaluation of policies, distributed optimization techniques, and learning for acquiring and sharing knowledge and experience. *Scope* Research is producing results in the area of autonomics/self-management. Now is the appropriate time for taking the essential steps that will show that the technology reaches maturity and, therefore, is closer to the market. In this respect, the special issue solicits innovative and high-quality work, as well as general, survey-like papers on relevant areas. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: - Future Internet visions and initiatives, requirements for management, business drivers for facilitating adoption of autonomics; reference models for the evolvable FI architecture. - New business models for a sustainable Future Internet. - Unified Management Framework: components, patterns, interfaces and systems; Consolidation and federation of approaches; Principles for network governance and re-defined human-to-network interactions. - Design of self-managed networks. - Performance evaluation of autonomic network intelligence; functionality and results on context reasoning, policies, distributed optimization, machine learning. - Cooperation protocols, knowledge/experience management and sharing. - Prototypes, experiments, trials, pilots, and guidelines for migration or transition to an autonomic Future Internet. - End-to-end validation with respect to QoE/QoS offered, cost factors, green targets, convergence, coherence, scalability. - Stability of autonomic solutions, approaches for establishing trust and certification. - Standardization initiatives. *Manuscript Submission* Articles should be of tutorial in nature and authors must follow the IEEE Network guidelines for preparation of the manuscript and its format. This is fundamental to make e-Health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective e-health systems. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to E-health, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content - and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities....indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven't been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiComprogram committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Submitted papers must be original work, and a paper with substantial similarity must neither be already published, nor be currently under review for publication in any other venue. In such approaches, the principal paradigm is not host-to-host communication as in the current Internet architecture. Instead, an increasing demand for highly scalable and efficient distribution of content has motivated the development of architectures that focus on information objects, their properties, and receiver interest in the network to achieve efficient and reliable distribution of such objects. Corresponding network architectures can leverage in-network storage, multiparty communication through replication and interaction models such as publish-subscribe to provide general platforms for communication services that are today only available in dedicated systems such as peer-to-peer overlays and proprietary content-distribution networks. Important research topics for ICN include: naming and addressing (how to name information objects, how to represent location information), routing and resolution (deciding on how to forward "interest" in information and actual information objects, whether and how to resolve information object names to lower layer identifiers during that process), resource management (implications of in-network caching and paradigms such as receiver-orientation to resource sharing, congestion control etc.) and security (privacy, data protection and key distribution have to be adapted to the new communication models). This workshop invites original contributions on Information-Centric Networking architecture topics as well as on results from implementations and experimentation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Naming and addressing in ICN * Routing and name resolution in ICN * Resource management (caching strategies, congestion control) * Security, privacy and trust in ICN * Testbeds and simulation frameworks * Business and deployment aspects * New application opportunities with ICN * Design and definition of the basic ICN primitives * Accountability in ICN (e.g. referrals, click-throughs, etc) * Billing, costing and invoicing for ICN traffic * Metadata and network extensions for ICN * Real-time traffic over ICN (voice, video, etc) * PDUs, fragmentation and â€œpacket sizeâ€ implications on design * Overlays and underlays with ICN * ICNs in mobile networks * Concurrency, locking and synchronization for ICN data * Versioning, deletion, revocation and general ICN object management * Monitoring, troubleshooting and management tools for ICNs Submission instructions ------------------------ Submissions must be no greater than 6 pages in length and must be a pdf file.
