The goals of this event are: 1. To enable PhD students to get quality feedback on their ongoing work, from the conference participants. 2. To enable interaction among PhD students, and between PhD students and potential employers! Thus PhD students as well as potential employers stand to gain from this forum. *Conference Attendance Support* The PhD student participants selected for this forum will automatically be eligible for conference attendance support. This will be in terms of a travel grant and substantial registration fee support. *Event Structure* The event will be structured as a series of 12-15 minute presentations (strictly timed!). Depending on the participation, we may have two parallel tracks. There will be a best student presentation award. Students selected for participation will be expected to go through a feedback-based revision process for their presentation, prior to the conference. This is to have improved quality as well as better control over time at the conference session. *Important Dates* Submission date: 15 October 2010 Notification date: 26 November 2010 *What to Submit* Students have to submit two things: 1. A 15-minute presentation, as they would be presenting at the conference if their submission is selected. This presentation should include: * The PhD problem motivation and problem statement * A crisp view of related work (i.e. why the problem is still unsolved) * An overview of the technical contributions thus far, including the main results and their implications The presentation should typically be about 8-10 slides. Including many more slides is likely to be counter-productive. 2. A 2-page extended abstract to help the reader understand the above slides. This abstract may refer to figures, tables, or graphs in the presentation slides. However, this vision introduces novel challenging issues and strong motivations for next generation middleware supports (either infrastructure based or peer-to-peer) capable of simplifying the development, deployment, and runtime management of mobile applications that adapt to their changing execution environments with minimum impact and complexity for application developers. In particular, we claim that there is the need for novel middleware solutions capable of addressing connectivity-level, location-dependent, and context-dependent support aspects, by specifically focusing on tremendously challenging research issues, such as scalability and interoperability in open wide-scale deployment environments, which are all crucial for next generation mobile applications. According to this vision, this special issue intends to disseminate the latest results in the emergent and large research area of middleware for mobile devices and applications, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art about middleware architectures, mechanisms, algorithms, and integrated frameworks. Practical experiences, extensive experimentation, and lessons learned from deployment over real wide-scale execution environments are welcome, as well as original disruptive proposals and groundbreaking ideas. Instead of looking at them separately, it is useful to arrange a venue for the researchers and practitioners in these two fields to come together and interact. This workshop aims to build this cooperation. Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks: According to the GESI study, the ICT sector contributes around 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To increase the competitiveness, energy efficiency (E2) must also be a design criterion of the network and service architectures. Flexible networks that adapt their capacity to the requirements can lead to significant energy savings. Novel networking paradigms need to be introduced to assure that all components are used with maximum utilization. E2 network architectures will be the cross-layer, cognitive and cooperative aggregation of techniques and mechanisms to provide a communication infrastructure where the energy consumptio n is minimized while guaranteeing the grade of service required by the applications. Along with energy efficiency, spectrum utilization is to be optimized and radiation is to be minimized. In E2Nets, the following topics of energy efficiency in sensor, mesh, and ad-hoc networks are considered: ・ Physical layer techniques, channel or network coding for energy efficiency ・ Methodologies and architectures for energy efficiency ・ Energy-efficiency measures ・ Energy-efficient flooding and multicast ・ Energy-efficient device and service discovery ・ Collaborative, cooperative, cognitive networking protocols for energy efficiency ・ Algorithms for scheduling and resource management ・ Energy harvesting ・ Cognitive networking for energy reduction in large scale environments ・ Device level collaboration and cognition for energy efficiency ・ User mobility modelling to predict and adapt to patterns ・ Hybrid fibre-wireless networks for energy-efficient delivery of wireless signals ・ Energy efficiency using harvesting in sensor, ad hoc, mesh and vehicular networks. To address the other 98% of the global CHG emissions, wireless networks can be used to reduce the energy consumption of industrial, home, office environments, applications. For example, along with the research in low-carbon road transportation technologies, wireless networks can be employed to analyze the traffic jams and help navigators to find a suitable route leading energy savings. To this extent, in this workshop the topics of wireless networks for energy efficiency consist of: ・ ICT for minimization of the energy consumption of other systems such as transportation, houses, offices and industrial buildings. ・ Energy efficient cloud computing and emerging applications, ・ Sensor and ad hoc networks for energy efficiency in industrial/harsh environments ・ Vehicular networks to reduce the CHG emissions ・ ICT for energy-efficient data centers The first workshop in Cape Town with ICC-2010 was well received with approximately 33% acceptance ratio. The highlights of the workshop were: (a) an open forum allowing everyone to participate actively and debating the ideas to be pursued further; and (b) papers from many fields and areas focusing on energy efficiency issues related to ICT. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library. Paper submission is via EDAS. In the meantime, embedded computing has developed and grown enormously, where tiny autonomous devices, such as wireless sensor nodes, form distributed sensing systems. The next grand challenge is the amalgamation of the Internet and the world of embedded devices to form an Internet of Things (IoT) where all kinds of devices extend the Internet into the physical world. The advent of an interoperable MAC layer (IEEE 802.15.4) and IPv6 connectivity for resource-constraint devices (6LoWPAN) are essential first steps. However, as the number of IoT devices is envisioned to surpass the number of nodes in the Internet by several orders of magnitude, IP connectivity is just a first milestone on the way of designing and developing IoT applications. Beyond basic networking there is a need for unifying concepts, methods, and software infrastructures that allow the efficient development of robust, interoperable, and scalable IoT applications spanning and integrating the Internet and the embedded world. Open issues include discovery, search, and management of services as well as service invocation on IoT devices in a highly scalable manner. Another fundamental aspect is the unified description of the semantics of the services provided by the embedded devices. While existing Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) are designed for PC class devices, there is a lack of light-weight approaches suitable for the resource constraints of embedded devices. The goal of this workshop is to exchange ideas and first results between experts working in the field of Wireless Sensor Networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Algorithms, and Semantics. A new era of vehicular technology that includes vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications is approaching. Peer-to-peer computing is an encroaching domain of very large scale distributed computing. The concept of P2P computing was developed to enable content distribution which is beyond the means of traditional client-server systems. Since then a number of P2P applications have been evolved. File sharing, voice communication, audio, and video streaming are the popular P2P applications. As a P2P system is a large scale, extremely dynamic, and decentralized system, besides the core logic, a wide range of research issues have to be addressed for deployment. Due to advances in wireless communication technologies, campus and enterprise-wide availability of wireless networks is already a reality. In some cases, an entire metropolitan area is covered by a single wireless network. Smartphones and handheld devices, equipped with modern communication interfaces, allow wireless data access from anywhere and at any time. Those devices and the associated data access services are attracting more consumers due to their decreasing prices. As a result, the demand to port network applications for mobile handheld devices is increasing. However, in spite of many interesting technological developments, wireless networks are still constrained by several factors, such as limited and expensive bandwidth and variable wireless channel conditions. Additionally, capability of mobile devices is restricted by their limited computing power, smaller memory and permanent storage, and extremely small power source. Dynamics of P2P networks simply worsen the scenario and make the deployment of P2P applications in wireless networks challenging. This special issue aims to portrait a picture of the recent studies in the realm of theories, systems and, solutions for P2P networks and applications in wireless and mobile environment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - P2P architectures in wireless and mobile networks - Efficient searches in wireless and mobile P2P networks - Trade-offs between replication, bandwidth, storage, and search costs - Energy aware P2P networks in wireless and mobile networks - Channel/bandwidth awareness in wireless and mobile P2P networks - Business logic in wireless and mobile P2P networks - P2P content distribution in wireless and mobile networks - Caching in wireless and mobile P2P networks The review process is divided into two phases. In particular, Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are becoming increasingly interesting and popular due to recent advances in inter-vehicular communication technologies and decreasing cost of communication devices. Differently from traditional wireless sensor nodes, vehicles are not typically affected by energy constraints and can easily be equipped with powerful processing units, wireless communication devices, GPS, and sensing devices such as chemical detectors, still/video cameras, vibration and acoustic sensors. Thus, they enable brand new and promising sensing applications, such as traffic reporting, relief to environmental monitoring, distributed surveillance, only to mention a few promising (and not the most visionary) service provisioning scenarios. The design, implementation, and deployment of dynamic, opportunistic, collaborative, scalable, efficient, reliable, robust, and secured mobile sensing applications for VSNs, especially over realistic and large-scale deployment environments such as municipalities, presents extraordinary challenges to the pervasive and mobile computing research community. This special issue intends to disseminate the latest research results in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in VANETs, VSNs, and mobile sensing. This workshop aims at bringing researchers and practitioners together that are working in areas such as sensor networks, architectures and services for the Future Internet, P2P overlays, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and novel communication paradigms like opportunistic and delay tolerant networking. You are invited to present your current work in the area of global sensing, to discuss and identify main challenges, and to foster new cooperation in the field. WORKSHOP TOPICS The workshop is seeking contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of architectures, applications, and services for global sensing: - Sensor networks - Public Sensing - Geosensor networks - Middleware for global sensing - Services and service provisioning for global sensing - Communication architectures for global sensing - Delay tolerant and opportunistic networking for global sensing - Complex event and stream processing - P2P overlays for global sensing - Quality for global sensing - Security aspects in global sensing SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. Contributions may present i) novel and possibly preliminary research results (10 pages), ii) position papers describing major challenges (10 pages), iii) new trends from the industry (2 pages). Each submission will be reviewed by three members of the program committee. Papers are selected according to their originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted papers will appear in the KIVS Workshop proceedings. For accepted papers, at least one author must register with the workshop and give a presentation at the workshop. Workshop papers are planned to be published in the open access journal ECEASST and will also be distributed to the participants of the conference in electronic form. The WiMAX, LTE, and LTE-Advanced standardizations have already processed toward this direction but still require significant improvements. Network planning and optimization faces many challenges arising from the use of new air interfaces and new technologies (e.g., MIMO, smart antennas, cooperative relay), the mix of voice, video and data traffic, the co-existence of different RATs (Radio Access Technologies), the growing importance of indoor coverage and the paradigm shifts (e.g., femtocells). The future wireless networks cannot operate efficiently, unless these challenges are properly addressed. This workshop will bring together both the mobile communications industry (operators, telecom vendors, radio network planning and optimization consulting firms and tool producers) and academia to present and discuss the problems, challenges, directions, and state-of-art in the fields of future wireless communication networks deployment, planning and optimization. Topics of interest relating to network planning and optimization and future wireless communications are (but not limited to): * Automatic UMTS/HSPA/LTE/LTE-A/WiFi/WiMAX radio network planning and optimization methods * The use of measurements in radio network planning and optimisation * Indoor network planning and optimization (BBU+RRU, repeaters, DAS, picocells and femtocells) * Heterogeneous wireless networks (UMTS/HSPA/LTE/WiFi/WiMAX/DVB) simulation, planning and optimization * Self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing in LTE and LTE-Advanced networks * Traffic modeling and real network traffic scenarios **Submission Guidelines** PlanNet accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers. Submissions must include an abstract, five to ten keywords, the e-mail address of the corresponding author and should not exceed 5 pages, including tables and figures (up to 2 extra pages at additional cost) in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font). Over the years, the wireless networks have not only expanded in their sizes, such as geographical area and number of nodes, but also in the variety of services, users, and deployment environments. Small mobile devices, such as smart phones, that allow instantaneous high speed information access and data processing have radically changed the way of our living. Moreover, the development of ad-hoc networks allows the easy formation of wireless networks for information sharing and data gathering. Due to various factors, wireless networks are constantly changing. For example, the service pattern, workload, available resources (power supply, bandwidth, beacons, nodes etc.) are not fixed. Therefore, it is important to be able to access and manage the quality of services for ensuring the optimal performance of the networks. There are basically two aspects to QoS study in wireless networks. One aspect is accessing and diagnosing the status of the networks and evaluating the current level of service quality. The other aspect is to study the network design to handle the changing factors of the networks so that the quality of service is optimized under the constraint of the available resources and service pattern. The quality of service management and diagnosis of a network is closely related to wide range of fundamental issues such as network topology, routing protocols, resource allocation, communication layer, and working environments etc. The contributed papers will study both practical and theoretical models and algorithms for ensuring the high quality of service in wireless networks and the approaches for quality of service evaluation and diagnosis.
