Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSN), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSAN are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN, WSN, robot networks, and robotics and automation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Autonomous sensor networks * Emergent behavior in WSAN * Modeling and simulation of WSAN * WSAN architectural and operational models * Autonomic and self-organizing coordination and communication * Sensor-actor (robot) and actor-actor coordination * Energy-efficient and real-time communication protocols * Bandwidth-efficient and delay-tolerant communication protocols * Distributed control and management in WSAN * Neighborhood discovery and mobility management * Communication protocols for swarms of mobile actors (robots) * Map exploration and pattern formation of mobile robots * Actor (robot) task assignment * Biologically inspired communication * Ecological systems * Architectures and topology control * Localization in WSAN * Probabilistic integration in WSAN * Quality of service, security and robustness issues * Applications and prototypes * Hybrid networks and wireless Internet * Data management, gathering, aggregation and query processing Papers must not exceed 6 single-spaced and two-column pages using at least 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inches pages, and must be formated in strict accordance with the IEEE author guidelines. In particular, geosensor networks and public sensing have evolved as novel and important research fields. They offer applications easy and efficient access to sensor data at the scale of billions of sensing devices. This data is of high relevance to a wide spectrum of applications, for instance in the field of environmental monitoring, traffic control, and smart energy grids. It is of high importance that communication architectures and services for enabling such systems are highly scalable and able to cope with massive amounts of sensor data in order to meet the requirements of emerging applications. These requirements range from hard performance and quality demands to ensuring security and privacy for the provided data. They are particularly difficult to meet in the face of the heterogeneity of sensors, sensor networks, and communication architectures. Coping with these challenges requires an integrated research effort involving researchers from a wide spectrum of different research fields. This workshop aims at bringing researchers and practitioners together that are working in areas such as sensor networks, architectures and services for the Future Internet, P2P overlays, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and novel communication paradigms like opportunistic and delay tolerant networking. You are invited to present your current work in the area of global sensing, to discuss and identify main challenges, and to foster new cooperation in the field. In this context, many national and international collaboration projects currently ongoing practically demonstrate the relevant government, industry, and academia interest in the field. In particular, Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are becoming increasingly interesting and popular due to recent advances in inter-vehicular communication technologies and decreasing cost of communication devices. Differently from traditional wireless sensor nodes, vehicles are not typically affected by energy constraints and can easily be equipped with powerful processing units, wireless communication devices, GPS, and sensing devices such as chemical detectors, still/video cameras, vibration and acoustic sensors. Thus, they enable brand new and promising sensing applications, such as traffic reporting, relief to environmental monitoring, distributed surveillance, only to mention a few promising (and not the most visionary) service provisioning scenarios. The design, implementation, and deployment of dynamic, opportunistic, collaborative, scalable, efficient, reliable, robust, and secured mobile sensing applications for VSNs, especially over realistic and large-scale deployment environments such as municipalities, presents extraordinary challenges to the pervasive and mobile computing research community. This special issue intends to disseminate the latest research results in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in VANETs, VSNs, and mobile sensing. Currently, the GHG emissions produced by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry alone are said to be equivalent to the GHG emissions of the entire aviation industry. It is estimated that one small computer server generates as much GHG as a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Furthermore, with the increasing demand for higher data rates, the energy consumption for the ICT industry is increasing by 16-20% per year, and the energy costs for mobile network operators can already be as high as half of their annual operating budgets. Since the GHG footprint of the ICT sector is dominated by electricity consumption, an obvious way to reduce emissions is to focus on efficient energy consumption and use as much electricity from renewable sources as possible. In addition, the role of green communications and networking technologies includes not only the emission reduction and energy savings in products and services, but also enabling low GHG emissions in other industries, such as electric power. Indeed, networks are crucial technologies for a smart power grid, which monitors, protects and optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements from end to end, with two-way flow of electricity and information to create an automated and distributed energy delivery network. This Workshop on "Green Communications and Networking" provides a forum for discussions of all these most recent developments and brings together industry and academia, engineers and researchers. Leveraged by the control and mobility of robots, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification, and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSRN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSRN and traditional WSN, robot networks, as well as robotics and automation. Possible topics of interest include, but are certainly not limited to the following: * Autonomous sensor networks * Emergent behavior in WSRN * Distributed control and management in WSRN * Modeling, simulation and experimentation of WSRN * Autonomic and self-organizing communication and coordination * Robot task assignment and mobility management * Biologically inspired communication * Data management, gathering, aggregation and query processing in WSRN * Location service, neighborhood discovery and service discovery in WSRN * Map exploration and pattern formation and flocking of mobile robots * Localization and time synchronization in WSRN * Energy efficiency, Quality of Service and robustness issues in WSRN * Architectures, coverage and topology control in WSRN * Probabilistic integration in WSRN * Applications and prototypes of WSRN PAPER SUBMISSION * The submitted papers must be written in English and describe original research which is not published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences. Mobile P2P is a cross-disciplinary research involving networking, information dissemination, databases, and security. The main goal of the workshop is to gather scientists from these areas together to foster collaboration and sparkle discussion on various aspects of mobile P2P, including but not limited to, mobile users' scenarios and usage cases, overlay design, development and deployment, mobile data dissemination, mobile database management, and location- based information services. The workshop also aims to discuss mobile P2P in various networking environments such as vehicular, cellular and/or large-scale heterogeneous networks. Examples of CPS encompass a wide range of man-made systems such as avionics, healthcare, transportation, automation, and smart grid systems. In addition, the recent proliferation of smart phones and mobile Internet devices, equipped with multiple sensors, can be leveraged to enable mobile cyber-physical applications. In these systems, it is of critical importance to properly resolve the complex interactions between various computational and physical elements. This special issue aims to identify emerging research topics in CPS from the mobile communication and networking perspective. In particular, by properly addressing complex interactions between cyber and physical elements of CPS, we focus on challenging issues in networking that need to be resolved for deriving eventual working solutions for CPS. However, WSNs may operate in inhospitable environments and become prone to sensor failures which not only can degrade the quality of coverage but also disrupt the data traffic. To address such a problem, most approaches in the literature deploy redundant nodes during network setup and reconfigure the network topology to establish alternate data paths. However, sometimes the network suffers a large scale damage that involves many nodes and would thus create multiple disjoint partitions. For these cases, a provisioned approach for tolerating occasional failures at the network design level will not be effective. A similar scenario happens when an application can be leveraged by engaging a number of standalone WSNs. For example, the disaster response may involve collaboration among multiple governmental agencies and may need to combine the services of their autonomously-operating WSNs in the search-and-rescue process. Connecting such multiple WSNs or partitions of a damaged WSN is referred to as federation and these networks are called Federated Wireless Sensor Systems (FedSenS). The purpose of this workshop is to establish a platform to exchange ideas among researchers for creation, operation and management of FedSenS involving various heterogeneous sensor and gateway nodes. Topics of Interest Original, unpublished and unsubmitted work is sought in terms of algorithms, techniques, architectures, position papers, visionary approaches and modeling to deploy and maintain FedSenS. The workshop will be sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM), the Autonomic Communications Forum, EMANICS, and the POSTECH ITCE (all pending). It is widely agreed that, despite its many successes, the current Internet also has a set of systemic problems, ranging from an upcoming shortage of IP addresses to insufficient security. However, the lack of scalable and agile manageability is arguably more important, as without management, it is impossible to build systems that adapt the services and resources offered in a context-dependent manner. In either case (clean slate vs. evolution vs. revolution), we must consider the manageability of the Future Internet from the beginning. Following the success of the two previous editions of this workshop, held in conjunction with IM 2009 and NOMS 2010, this workshop aims at providing an international forum for researchers in these and similar areas. ManFI 2011 will combine original full paper presentations with a motivating keynote, quick hot topic presentations and a panel discussion to thoroughly explore this challenging topic. Late-breaking advances and work-in-progress reports from ongoing research are also encouraged. Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere can be submitted. Each submission must be written in English, accompanied by a 75 to 200 word abstract that clearly outlines the scope and contributions of the paper, and a list of key words. There is a length limitation of 8 pages (including title, abstract, all figures, tables, and references) for regular conference papers, and 4 pages for short papers describing work in progress. Submissions must be in IEEE 2-column style. Papers exceeding these limits, multiple submissions, and self-plagiarized papers will be rejected without further review. As a result, most of the public places such as airports, train stations, banks, shopping malls, subways and streets are nowadays equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia surveillance systems. These systems are meant to process the sensory data to automatically detect the suspicious or unusual behavior of the people and alert the security personnel so that a preventive action can be taken. Although this surveillance infrastructure has proved to be highly useful from a security perspective; there has been apprehension among people in regard to their privacy safeguards. Citizens have increasingly begun to object to being watched electronically. Hence, there is a need of preserving privacy of people yet providing them a sense of security through effective surveillance. Although there has been a significant progress in the field of surveillance research, the issues related to people's privacy have often been overlooked in the past and have only begun to attract the attention of researchers very recently. The goal of this issue is to bring forth the recent advancements in the privacy research for multimedia surveillance. Original and unpublished contributions covering the following and related issues concerned with privacy in multi-sensor multimedia surveillance settings are solicited: · Privacy considerations in acquisition and transmission of multimedia data · Privacy issues in multimedia information processing: fusion, analysis, presentation, and publication of multimedia data · Privacy in multimedia databases: storage, access, indexing and retrieval · Theory and models: assessment of privacy and utility, privacy leakage and covert channels · Ethical and legal issues of privacy Submission Details —--------------------- Submitting authors should follow the Author Guidelines available from http://www.ifi.uio.no/MMSJ/author.html.
