Submission Deadline: Aug. 15th, 2010.Call for Papers Telecommunication Systems Journal http://www.springer.com/journal/11235 (Springer) (SCI indexed) Special Issue on “Recent Advance in Mobile Sensor Networks” Scope The continuous growing technique of sensor networks has enabled many new applications in which mobility of sensor nodes (controllable sensors and uncontrollable sensors) are explored, such as sea monitoring, animal migration and patrol defense. Unlike existing wireless sensor networks which are composed of static sensors and sink nodes, wireless mobile sensor networks allows diverse entities to move within the network field all the time, e.g., mobile base station, mobile sensor nodes, mobile relay nodes, mobile cluster heads. Enabling mobility in traditional static sensor networks makes a great impact on most existing research solutions and poses a large number of research challenging issues in both communication and data management aspects, e.g., challenges for localization in mobile sensor networks, challenges for providing coverage services by mobile sensor networks, and challenges for data collection in mobile sensor networks. On the other hand, these challenges in mobile sensor networks also provides lots of opportunities that researchers can leverage the mobility feature to exploring improvement for traditional solutions and methods in various aspects, e.g., node localization, network coverage, and data collection/streaming/management. This special issue is seeking papers working on these challenges of the mobile ad hoc and sensor networks from the academia researchers and the industry practitioners, as well as papers that addressing various hot topics of the mobile sensor networks. The World is increasingly experiencing a strong need for energy consumption reduction and a need for efficient use of scarce natural resources. Official studies report that buildings account for the largest portion of World's energy expenditure and have the fastest growth rate. Clearly, energy saving strategies that target energy use in buildings and surroundings can have a major impact worldwide, driving the current energy market toward self-sufficiency and self-sustainability. This calls for effective techniques and methods that enable accurate carbon foot printing, monitoring and control of appliance activity, energy auditing and management in buildings and surroundings and the generation of energy awareness. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) plays a key role in enabling energy-saving systems in buildings and surrounding spaces by providing a reliable, cost-effective and extensible solution that can be placed in existing as well as new structures and be controlled via the Internet. In fact, WSNs allow the monitoring of the energy consumption in near-real time and, as such, they are an essential tool in the control loop that will be used in future structures for the generation and usage of diverse types of energy. Following the success of the past edition of the workshop, BuildSys 2010 focuses on the intersection between WSNs and energy in buildings by merging experts in the WSN domain and experts in the Building/Energy community in order to identify innovative solutions which achieve the broad goal of energy-reduction. The workshop welcomes sensor network-based techniques and applications that can clearly demonstrate how to: * Increase energy awareness and reduce consumption by leveraging on sensing systems/social networking/mobile phones, novel visualization and other forms of media to convey relevant information to users; * Systems that can influence a change of building occupant behaviour towards a more parsimonious usage of electricity, gas, heating, water, etc.; * Monitor and actuate appliances in residential and industrial settings (e.g. data centres, HVAC, etc.) * Monitor and control of alternative energy sources aiming at an increase of production efficacy; * Model and simulate heating cooling lighting, ventilation, water usage and other energy flows in buildings and surrounding spaces through the combination of real data from sensors and popular energy simulation tools such as Energy Plus and TrnSys; * Create innovative tools to model and visualize energy expenditure and production (from, e.g., solar panels, wind turbines); * Integrate sensor-based systems to improve grid operation and energy distribution (electricity, gas, water); Particular emphasis will also be given to: * Real evaluation of energy-saving techniques and case studies that demonstrate a decrease of energy expenditure in real scenarios; * Design of innovative architectures that are capable of reducing energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency; * Accurate case studies and issues experienced current energy systems and how sensor networks can improve the state of the art in building energy management; * Sensor systems for the identification of appliances in industrial and home environments, which can be used to estimate the energy usage/production model and to predict future demands; * Innovative Sensor Network-assisted building monitoring systems (BMS); * Integration of WSNs and wired sensor systems (e.g., Powerline, exing BMS) for the energy management in buildings. These networks show promise to support the development of always-on services in next generation mobile systems. Initially, it was natural to inherit the traditional layered network architecture in designing systems and services. More recently, the need to support high performance applications while coping with the limited node capabilities highlights the necessity of cross-layer design in these networks. Cross-layer design offers new opportunities to exploit the potential offered by joint optimization of design parameters, satisfy QoS requirements, among others, that cannot be addressed by traditional architecture in a satisfactory manner. However, at the current time, we lack a clear understanding of the interactions among the layers, and a comprehensive framework for cross-layer design in the network stack. Scope of Contributions The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address the key aspects of cross layer design in ad hoc and sensor networks. Original manuscripts describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal, magazine, or conference are solicited. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have emerged to address this challenge by offering infrastructure and mechanisms to deliver content and services in a scalable manner. To deal with such new requirements, more general Content Networks (CNs) are being introduced. The integration of these emerging technologies in content delivery opens new perspectives in Internet technologies, raising new issues in the architecture, design and implementa tion of existing CDNs. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least six months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Students submitting to the MobiCom 2010 Poster Session can opt to have their posters considered also by the SRC committee. Selected competitors will receive up to $500 USD for their conference travel, depending on need, and will earn a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals. The winners will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet. Competitors should be prepared to attend the poster session and, if selected for further competition, give a short talk about their research projects. Winners of the MobiCom 2010 SRC will be announced at the conference. The Student Research Competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students whose submissions are accepted by the SRC committee. To be considered, complete a submission to the Poster Session and indicate that you would like to participate in the SRC by adding “[SRC]” in the subject line. Current ACM student membership and student status as of the submission deadline are required for the lead student. Submission Instructions: The posters should be submitted to mobicom10.poster(a)gmail.com. The submission should be formatted as a paper or extended abstract describing the research to be presented in your poster and should submitted as a PDF file of at most THREE pages, including all figures and references (formatted into the US letter size of 8.5 × 11 inches with fonts no smaller than 10 point size). The extended abstract must include the names of the authors, affiliations and email addresses. The submission should include the following: ·In the submission you would need to indicate you want the submission to be considered for the Student Research Competition by adding “[SRC]” in the subject line. ·If you would like your submission to be considered for the SRC, you would need to indicate any of the student authors is an undergraduate student. Note that if any of the authors is a graduate student, then the submission will be considered under the graduate category. All poster submissions will be reviewed by a committee. While research and development in these areas has recently gained momentum, the space of potential solutions is still far from being explored. The Third International Workshop on Green Communications will be held in conjunction with the IEEE Global Communications Conference (IEEE GLOBECOM 2010) and will bring together academic and industrial researchers for discussing energy-efficient communications. After two previous successful workshops on green communications at ICC'09 and GLOBECOM'09, it will continue to serve as a forum for addressing research challenges between the already established conferences and workshops covering energy efficiency for IT on one side and for wireless sensor networks on the other side. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report recent results, share experiences, or address research challenges in energy-efficient network protocols and devices and in energy management. Such flexibility, inherent to wireless technologies, is giving rise to new types of networks which are spread by means of the end-user. Their potential is not explored in terms of new Internet horizons, potential business opportunities, nor in terms of social interaction: user-centric wireless networking models, where cooperation is the key topic, can contribute to the intensification of the phenomenon that is today the core of the so-called Web2.0. The second edition of the U-NET workshop aims at promoting a debate on opportunities and challenges related with user-provided networks, both in technical and in business terms. Such debate is highly relevant as of today since user-provided networking seems to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that: i) such novel functionality allows local-loop networks to operate in a completely autonomic way; ii) the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards, as well as based upon his/her own mobility patterns and social behavior. This brings about a lot of opportunities and challenges for mobile wireless networking. With the emerging wireless technologies, mobility has more generic meaning than just node movement as in the traditional sense. It also means that when the operational environment changes (such as frequency and power), a node or the network adapts to the environmental changes, which requires the cognitive capability. On one hand, it is of critical importance that seamless, low latency and transparent services are provided to the users, via potentially multiple heterogeneous wireless technologies or opportunistic spectrum access involved during the course of node movement or environmental changes. Environment cognizance, spectrum-aware mobility management, and vertical handoff become critical components in the solution space. On the other hand, host and network mobility also affects the performance of network protocols significantly, while at the same time allows opportunistic interconnections of heterogeneous networks, which in turn makes mobility adaptability an important design issue. This asks the design of wireless architectures, protocols, spectrum management, and mobility management mechanisms to be revisited. Cohesive with the main theme of Globecom 2010 --- "moving into the age of mobile interactivity", this workshop welcomes original submissions from both researchers and practitioners that explore recent advances in architecture, system, protocol, modeling, and testbed design, as well as emerging applications and standards to enable seamless mobility and transparency in wireless networks. The paper should be used as the basis for a 20 - 30 minute workshop presentation. Manuscripts should be written in English conforming to the IEEE standard conference format (8.5" x 11", Two-Column) and not exceed 5 pages in length. Submission of papers should be regarded as a commitment such that, if accepted, at least one author of the paper will register and attend the conference; otherwise it will be removed from the IEEE Digital Library after the conference. Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the EDAS paper submission website by going to <http://edas.info/N8656> and then selecting the appropriate workshop submission link. See instructions below. Proposals for research demonstrations and exhibits are strongly solicited. Demonstrations should be innovative research prototypes that show new research related to the practice of mobile computing or wireless and mobile networking. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: • Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility, limited bandwidth, limited power and/or intermittent connectivity • Applications and services for mobile users • Mobile cloud computing • Fundamental aspects of mobile computing and wireless networking • Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks • Location-dependent applications and protocols • Modeling, measurement and simulation aspects of mobile networks • Mobile ad hoc and sensor networks • Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking • Performance of mobile and wireless networks and systems • Security, privacy, and fault-tolerance of mobile/wireless systems • Wireless access technologies for mobile nodes (e.g., multi-radio and mesh systems, personal area networks) • Implementations and experimental mobile systems Student Demo Competition This year all research demo submissions with a student lead will be automatically entered into a Student Research Demo competition. The goal of this competition is to encourage students to build systems and prototypes validating their research results, and through the demo, make it more accessible to the wider community. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. . Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to "mobicom10-demos(a)ee.duke.edu <mailto:mobicom10-demos@ee.duke.edu>". The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed, and in PDF format only. Please indicate "MobiCom 2010 Demo Submission" as the subject of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged. The summary should include: • The names, affiliations, and email addresses of the authors. • Goals of the demo and the basic idea that it supports. • Equipment to be used for the demo. • Space needed and setup time required. • Additional facilities needed including power and Internet/wireless access. • Indicate a URL with any extra information, if needed. • Indicate whether the demo is eligible for the student demo competition by identifying the lead student(s) and their affiliations. Authors of accepted papers will need to sign an IEEE copyright release form and present their paper at the conference. The Proceedings of the conference will be published by the IEEE Communication Society and distributed at the conference; copies of the Proceedings will also be available for sale after the conference. All paper submissions will be handled electronically in EDAS via the INFOCOM 2011 submission page. Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF) version of their full paper. Papers should be no longer than 9 pages, size 10 font or greater, and compliant with the margin requirement. Please refer to the INFOCOM manuscript preparation page for details. Manuscripts that are not compliant with the requirements may be declined without review. The deadline for registering the title and the abstract of the paper with our electronic submission system is July 23, 2010, and the deadline for submitting the actual paper is July 30, 2010. All deadlines are 11:59PM PDT and are firm (i.e., no deadline extension will be made). All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through peer reviewing, where TPC members referee all papers and hold a TPC meeting to determine the set of accepted papers. A subset of the accepted papers will be invited to IEEE INFOCOM Mini-conferences and considered for inclusion in the IEEE INFOCOM Proceedings, in the event that the paper cannot be included in the main conference program.
