Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least six months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a one-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by roundtable discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In order to provide such individual attention, the number of accepted DC participants will be limited to twelve. SUBMISSIONS Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: 1) Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress, and including a 100 word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. 2) Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Students submitting to the MobiCom 2010 Poster Session can opt to have their posters considered also by the SRC committee. Selected competitors will receive up to $500 USD for their conference travel, depending on need, and will earn a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals. The winners will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet. Competitors should be prepared to attend the poster session and, if selected for further competition, give a short talk about their research projects. Winners of the MobiCom 2010 SRC will be announced at the conference. The Student Research Competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students whose submissions are accepted by the SRC committee. To be considered, complete a submission to the Poster Session and indicate that you would like to participate in the SRC by adding “[SRC]” in the subject line. Current ACM student membership and student status as of the submission deadline are required for the lead student. Submission Instructions: The posters should be submitted to mobicom10.poster(a)gmail.com. The submission should be formatted as a paper or extended abstract describing the research to be presented in your poster and should submitted as a PDF file of at most THREE pages, including all figures and references (formatted into the US letter size of 8.5 × 11 inches with fonts no smaller than 10 point size). The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems (MEDES) aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end. Recently, there is a growing interest in the design, development and deployment of sensor systems for applications of high-level inference, which leads to an increasing demand on interconnecting wireless sensor networks with other emerging technologies, such as RFID technology, Multimedia Based surveillance System, biomedical technology, mobile agent based networks, P2P technology and Business Process, etc. With sensor technology being incorporated into these technologies, demands from more and more autonomous and intelligent applications can be met. This workshop is intended to provide a forum for presenting, exchanging and discussing the most recent advances in different aspects of integrating wireless sensor networks with emerging technologies. The coexistence of wireless heterogeneous networks has been widely recognized, and it has become more and more common that new mobile devices get equipped with multiple and heterogeneous wireless interfaces. Furthermore, the recent advances in software-defined and cognitive radio technologies promise even more diversity and heterogeneity. This brings about a lot of opportunities and challenges for mobile wireless networking. With the emerging wireless technologies, mobility has more generic meaning than just node movement as in the traditional sense. It also means that when the operational environment changes (such as frequency and power), a node or the network adapts to the environmental changes, which requires the cognitive capability. On one hand, it is of critical importance that seamless, low latency and transparent services are provided to the users, via potentially multiple heterogeneous wireless technologies or opportunistic spectrum access involved during the course of node movement or environmental changes. Environment cognizance, spectrum-aware mobility management, and vertical handoff become critical components in the solution space. On the other hand, host and network mobility also affects the performance of network protocols significantly, while at the same time allows opportunistic interconnections of heterogeneous networks, which in turn makes mobility adaptability an important design issue. This asks the design of wireless architectures, protocols, spectrum management, and mobility management mechanisms to be revisited. Cohesive with the main theme of Globecom 2010 --- "moving into the age of mobile interactivity", this workshop welcomes original submissions from both researchers and practitioners that explore recent advances in architecture, system, protocol, modeling, and testbed design, as well as emerging applications and standards to enable seamless mobility and transparency in wireless networks. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. . Submission deadline: 15th July 2010 *** CALL FOR PAPERS *** This workshop continues the line of UbiHealth workshops organized at the Ubicomp conference in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Up till now, the majority of research within Ubiquitous Healthcare (UbiHealth) has focused on ubiquitous computing for somatic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, and obesity. Research on these topics is still very relevant and represents the main contribution to UbiHealth. This year, however, we intend to expand the participation to include researchers working with ubiquitous computing for mental disorders and maintenance of mental health. While, some research has been directed towards dementia and autism, less focus has been given to the major mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and chronic stress. However, mental disorders affect around a quarter of all people at some time during their life. These disorders are universal - affecting all countries and societies, and individuals at all ages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental disorders have a major negative direct and indirect impact on economy and on the quality of life of individuals and families. *** CONTRIBUTIONS *** We invite researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds such as engineering, computer science, pervasive computing, human computer interface design, psychology, psychiatry and other medical sciences. The main objective of the workshop will be to strengthen the cooperation within the growing community in pervasive healthcare research, allowing lively exchange of ideas and foster new collaborations. Ich möchte Sie an das siebte Treffen des Fachgespräches Ortsbezogene Anwendungen und Dienste Do. 23. und Fr. 24. September 2010 an den Deutsche Telekom Laboratories/TU Berlin der GI-Fachgruppe "Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme" (KuVS) erinnern. Ziel des Fachgespräches ist, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aber auch Vertretern der Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem intensiven Gedankenaustausch zu geben. Grundlage dazu sind Vorträge zu verschiedenen Forschungsarbeiten aus diesem Bereich. Nach den erfolgreichen Treffen in den vergangenen Jahren findet in diesem Jahr das siebte Treffen in Berlin statt. Teilnehmer, die ihre Forschungsarbeit auf dem Treffen präsentieren wollen, möchten wir zur Einreichung eines Abstracts aufrufen (1 Seite, auf deutsch oder englisch). Nach dem Treffen werden die Teilnehmer zur Einreichung von Vollartikeln aufgerufen, die als Tagungsband veröffentlicht werden. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. *Submission Instructions* Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to mobicom10-demos#(@ &#ee.duke.edu. The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed, and in PDF format only. Please indicate "MobiCom 2010 Demo Submission" as the subject of the email. Ideally, wireless users want to have the same services and capabilities that they have commonly come to expect with wired networks. However, to meet these objectives, the wireless community faces certain challenges and need an excellent understanding of all aspects of wireless networks. Wireless networks are large complex entities. This complexity brings to the many problems, such as network planning, resource management, Quality of Service scheduling, congestion and flow control, connection admission control, and Medium Access Control. These problems are outside the traditional communications background. They can be properly addressed with methodologies such as optimization, estimation, adaptation, fuzzy control, games control, robust stability, distributed control, hybrid control. For instance, recently, there has been a surge in research activities that utilize optimization techniques to analysis and design wireless networks. The purpose of this special issue is to bring research papers addressing the theme of control and optimization for wireless networks. Subject areas of interest include, but not limited to, the following: Applications of control theory to wireless network problems Admission control, power control, and congestion control of wireless networks Control system design base on wireless networks Network utility maximization for wireless networks Allocation of wireless network resources such as bandwidth, rate, or power Optimization-based models of network traffic and topology Digital communications signal processing algorithms via optimization methods Cross-layer design through nonlinear optimization decomposition Modeling and performance evaluations for wireless networks Submission Format: The submitted papers must be written in English and describe original research which is not published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences.
