In this context, many national and international collaboration projects currently ongoing practically demonstrate the relevant government, industry, and academia interest in the field. In particular, Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are becoming increasingly interesting and popular due to recent advances in inter-vehicular communication technologies and decreasing cost of communication devices. Differently from traditional wireless sensor nodes, vehicles are not typically affected by energy constraints and can easily be equipped with powerful processing units, wireless communication devices, GPS, and sensing devices such as chemical detectors, still/video cameras, vibration and acoustic sensors. Thus, they enable brand new and promising sensing applications, such as traffic reporting, relief to environmental monitoring, distributed surveillance, only to mention a few promising (and not the most visionary) service provisioning scenarios. The design, implementation, and deployment of dynamic, opportunistic, collaborative, scalable, efficient, reliable, robust, and secured mobile sensing applications for VSNs, especially over realistic and large-scale deployment environments such as municipalities, presents extraordinary challenges to the pervasive and mobile computing research community. This special issue intends to disseminate the latest research results in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in VANETs, VSNs, and mobile sensing. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. A number of recent developments give momentum to this new field of research, including: the proliferation of embedded sensors in open programmable smartphones; the ease at which researchers and developers can distribute new applications using vendor specific "app store" delivery channels (e.g., Apple AppStore, Android Market, Microsoft Mobile Marketpace, Nokia Ovi); and, finally, the emergence of the mobile computing cloud. The combination of three drivers is creating new opportunities in mobile phone sensing not seen before. Emerging applications on apps phones and cloud can sense, mine, and learn human behaviors and intentions to provide personalized feedback and persuasion. Example application domains include mobile advertisement, social networking, healthcare, entertainment, education, safety and business. Inspired from traditionally well studied mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), these networks deploy specialized heterogeneous wireless nodes and are expected to be used in many real-life applications involving inter-disciplinary research. In addition to the challenges inherent to MANETs and WSNs, these emerging wireless ad hoc networks introduce new challenges at all layers of protocol stack including new forms of wireless communication (e.g., multi-channel, acoustic, underground communication), new mobility models (e.g., vehicle, underwater, actuator mobility), quality of service (QoS) (e.g., bandwidth, delay and reliability guarantees) and new node placement and self-organization techniques (e.g., cameras, mesh router, and actuator placement). Published solutions for MANETs and WSNs cannot be directly applied to aforementioned wireless ad hoc networks due to their special characteristics and constraints. In this context, many national and international collaboration projects currently ongoing practically demonstrate the relevant government, industry, and academia interest in the field. In particular, Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are becoming increasingly interesting and popular due to recent advances in inter-vehicular communication technologies and decreasing cost of communication devices. Differently from traditional wireless sensor nodes, vehicles are not typically affected by energy constraints and can easily be equipped with powerful processing units, wireless communication devices, GPS, and sensing devices such as chemical detectors, still/video cameras, vibration and acoustic sensors. Thus, they enable brand new and promising sensing applications, such as traffic reporting, relief to environmental monitoring, distributed surveillance, only to mention a few promising (and not the most visionary) service provisioning scenarios. The design, implementation, and deployment of dynamic, opportunistic, collaborative, scalable, efficient, reliable, robust, and secured mobile sensing applications for VSNs, especially over realistic and large-scale deployment environments such as municipalities, presents extraordinary challenges to the pervasive and mobile computing research community. This special issue intends to disseminate the latest research results in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in VANETs, VSNs, and mobile sensing. These networks show promise to support the development of always-on services in next generation mobile systems. Initially, it was natural to inherit the traditional layered network architecture in designing systems and services. More recently, the need to support high performance applications while coping with the limited node capabilities highlights the necessity of cross-layer design in these networks. Cross-layer design offers new opportunities to exploit the potential offered by joint optimization of design parameters, satisfy QoS requirements, among others, that cannot be addressed by traditional architecture in a satisfactory manner. However, at the current time, we lack a clear understanding of the interactions among the layers, and a comprehensive framework for cross-layer design in the network stack. Scope of Contributions The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address the key aspects of cross layer design in ad hoc and sensor networks. At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real world aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. Innovations can be at any layer, from physical to application. In addition, we particularly encourage innovations that span over multiple layers and/or multiple heterogeneous exerimental platforms (federation of testbeds). The demo must be presented live, i.e. a presentation of a demo (powerpoint, video, etc) only is not allowed. Also, we emphasize that the demo session is not a forum to display commercial products. WiNTECH 2010 is also seeking proposals for posters describing novel work in wireless network testbeds, measurements and characterizations. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content — and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities….indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven’t been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. On one hand, autonomous applications embedded in automatic environments have rapidly expanded from classical industrial ones to applications where different modular devices, actuators and sensors interact closely and on the other hand communication technologies have also known a great growing development related to sensor networks, ad-hoc networks, wireless networks, etc. Healthcare and wellness applications such as helping elderly people, assisting dependent persons, habitat monitoring in a smart environment constitute some of the potential scenarios of convergence between robotic systems and network technologies. These applications, which are based on high-level commands and in order to accomplish some specific tasks, reveal new challenges regarding mechanic design, portability, acceptability, power support, control theory, etc. In addition to portability and low-power systems, which are vital challenges that limit substantially any successful robotic application, network paradigms should also take into account issues related to cost, scalability and security. This workshop will highlight the overlapping of these two domains of autonomous systems and network technologies devoted for different applications. Issues related to concepts, new technologies, and protocols will elicit particular attention. The WiMAX, LTE, and LTE-Advanced standardizations have already moved toward this direction but still require significant improvements. Network planning and optimization faces many challenges arising from the use of new air interfaces and new technologies (e.g., MIMO, smart antennas, cooperative relay), the mix of voice, video and data traffic, the co-existence of different RATs (Radio Access Technologies), the growing importance of indoor coverage and the paradigm shifts (e.g., femtocells). The future wireless networks cannot operate efficiently, unless these challenges are properly addressed. This workshop will bring together both the mobile communications industry (operators, telecom vendors, radio network planning and optimization consulting firms and tool producers) and academia to present and discuss the problems, challenges, directions, and state-of-art in the fields of future wireless communication networks deployment, planning and optimization. Topics of interest relating to network planning and optimization and future wireless communications are (but not limited to): 1. Automatic UMTS/HSPA/LTE/LTE-A/WiFi/WiMAX radio network planning and optimization methods 2. The use of measurements in radio network planning and optimisation 3. Indoor network planning and optimization (BBU+RRU, repeaters, DAS, picocells and femtocells) 4. Heterogeneous wireless networks (UMTS/HSPA/LTE/WiFi/WiMAX/DVB) simulation, planning and optimization 5. Self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing in LTE and LTE-Advanced networks 6. Traffic modeling and real network traffic scenarios PlanNet2011 accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers. Submissions must include an abstract, five to ten keywords, the e-mail address of the corresponding author and should not exceed 6 pages, including tables and figures (up to two extra pages at additional cost) in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font). Submission of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will register for the conference and present the work.
