POLICY 2010 has grown out of a highly successful series of workshops and this is recognized by the elevation of the event to an IEEE symposium. This year's event will have a special focus on policy-driven real-life applications, and we encourage submissions in this area as well as the topics listed below. To this end, developing tools and technologies that can build, access, manage, deploy, and maintain applications in clouds in a developer-friendly manner has become critical. Clouds aim to power the next generation data centers by architecting them as a network of virtual services (hardware, database, user-interface, application logic) so that users are able to deploy and access applications globally and on demand at competitive costs depending on users QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud infrastructures are exposed through collections of software services at SaaS and PaaS layers designed to support creation and deployment of application services. Currently, public IaaS vendors including Amazon (web services), Microsoft (.Net), Google (python), and GoGrid offer different level of software programming abstractions and interfaces. Next, these are implemented using different programming languages, hence should be accessed through Vendor-dependent adapter interfaces. Traditional distributed (RPC, RMI, CORBA) and enterprise programming technologies (J2EE, .Net, SOA), and tools are insufficient to handle the complexity posed by Cloud computing platforms. There are significant programming challenges to be solved, if an enterprise or scientific application has to be ported to clouds. The application services arriving at a public cloud also have radically different application characteristics and workload profiles, ranging from the traditional e-Commerce application types, to the newer social networking and collaboration applications, to the enterprise business applications such as CRM and ERP, and to the scientific computing and data intensive type of applications. Further, there is possibility to create Cloud mashup applications that can combine data and functionality from multiple external services that are offered by different SaaS and PaaS vendors. Hence, there is a need to develop tools, programming APIs, and plug-ins, IDEs that can hide the complexity of Cloud platforms from the application service developers. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases because of the more complex models and of the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the workshop seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. An emerging trend is the collaboration of miniature devices to achieve a common goal. Representative examples include wireless sensor networks, pervasive computing and embedded systems. Along this trend, the notion of Cooperating Objects collectively refers to embedded computing devices equipped with communication as well as sensing or actuation capabilities, able to cooperate and organize themselves autonomously into networks to achieve a common task. As such, Cooperating Objects envision a single, coherent system formed by a wide range of devices, including those from the areas mentioned above. The complexity germane to the interaction inside and across networks of Cooperating Objects presents a rich set of research questions, and entails a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as networking, software engineering, and control theory. CONET 2010 will provide a discussion forum for researchers, aimed at fostering synergy and convergence of complementary areas towards the vision of networks of Cooperating Objects. Mobile phones are one of the most pervasive technologies on earth: almost every person has access to a mobile device. Yet, little attention has been given to the design of the interface of these devices, or to its services, to include more equitably people with different abilities or cultures. A big challenge of mobile UI design is the physical input limitation. In most cases users only have a simple 5-way controller, a few selection keys, and a keypad to enter both text and numbers. Recently, top of the line devices also include touch screens that are able to recognize multi-finger interaction. Nevertheless, this seems to be still limiting when compared to the myriad of possibilities offered by other technologies. In particular, sensing technologies could be easily incorporated into mobile devices that could broaden the range of interaction capabilities. Related to the lack of input is the limitation of the output capabilities of these devices. Screens are small, thus showing information and creating visual cues is a challenging task for designers. The iPod comes to mind as a good example of design solution to the input/output challenge. Apple designers started from the users’ goals and the context in which the device had to be used. Accessibility for mobile devices is not just a hardware challenge. The design of software components has to adapt to people with different abilities and needs. For instance, the design of an interface for people with visual impairment has to adapt its visual components so to maximize readability while maintaining internal and external consistency. Finally, accessibility for such universal technology should take into account people belonging to different cultures. The most obvious example is related to languages that are written from right to left – something that interfaces developed for western cultures do not take into account. However, supporting multiple cultures is not just a matter of rendering text. The metaphors that are associated with elements of the interface are often fundamentally driven by the particular culture of the designer of that interface. The challenge for MobileHCI2010 consists in designing innovative software and/or hardware solutions for mobile devices that could allow people with different abilities or cultures to be supported in achieving their goals and satisfying their needs. We are seeking examples and case studies of solutions that are designed with the focus on users’ needs and context of use. Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSN), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSAN are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN, WSN, robot networks, and robotics and automation. The main advantages of WSN include its low cost, rapid deployment, self-organization, and fault tolerance. WSN has received tremendous interests of various research communities, and significant progresses have been made in various aspects including sensor platform development, wireless communication and networking, application signal and information processing, as well as network performance evaluation and design. Such work has established good foundation for WSN research and development. The research and development of WSNs are stimulated by novel exciting applications. For example, WSNs, particularly the wireless body sensor network, make the old people/patient healthcare monitoring possible in smart home environment, where advanced signal processing algorithms are required to extract medical parameters like heart beat rate from raw sensor measurements such as ECG signal, estimation algorithms are required for occupant location and motion tracking, and machine learning algorithms are required for occupant activity recognition. The indoor environment (e.g., temperature and humidity) can be monitored by ambient wireless sensor network, and help design highly efficient distributed air-conditioning control system to improve the energy efficiency and enhance occupant comfort. Such WSN applications must address a number of key technological challenges induced by limited network resources such as node energy and network bandwidth. As a result, the application algorithms should be resource constrained and the network protocols should be application-driven. Advanced closed-loop system can be expected as an integrated system solution to link the application algorithms and the lower layer networking protocols by means of control theoretic or optimization approaches. To be scalable and reliable, such algorithms and protocols should also be distributed in nature via node local processing and collaboration with limited information exchange to achieve complex overall network goal. This special issue is a follow-up of the previous special issue on Networked Sensing, Decision Making and Control in Journal of Control Theory and Applications organized by Lihua Xie and Frank L. Lewis, which received warm responses. Different from that special issue, which mainly addresses the theoretic approaches for WSNs and networked control systems challenged by network uncertainties and limited resources, this special issue will be more focused on novel real WSN applications and application-driven research and development. Papers with real practices on platform development, network deployment, and system operational lessons or experience are particularly welcome. The management of content distribution services is an important key to attract and keep customers, while increasing profits to content providers. At the same time the complexity and dynamics of content networks require special solutions in order to provide efficient delivery and deployment of real-time multimedia services. Further, emerging diverse and heterogeneous wired and wireless systems is a challenging research objective. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols, as well as, the demand for improved Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE), and seamless mobility control creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols, architectures and methods towards Future Multimedia Networking Systems. Thus, one major challenge is the ever growing complexity of communication management and network maintenance. Solutions are required in which services, management and administration entities interact and behave autonomously, with the overall goal of creating content centric networks. The objective of the Future Multimedia Networking - FMN 2010 workshop is to discuss state-of-the-art research and developing activities contributing to aspects of multimedia systems, content networking, and autonomous communication. We are inviting both theoretical and experimental papers as well as work-in-progress research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Content centric networks - Autonomic content networks - Audio-visual systems - Novel protocols for multimedia services - Grid networking for multimedia services - Multimedia in personal, sensor and ad-hoc networks - Multimedia in peer-to-peer networks and autonomic network infrastructures - Multimedia in mobile and broadband wireless access networks - Quality of service management in content centric networks - Quality of experience management in content centric networks - Seamless mobility of multimedia services in emerging content networks - Multicast and broadcast multimedia service management - Resource reservation for multimedia services - Context-aware content distribution - Energy-efficiency in content centric networks - Multimedia Security PARALLEL POSTER/DEMONSTRATION SESSION A parallel poster/demonstration session entitled “Demonstrations on Future Multimedia” will be organized along with the main workshop. This event encourages researchers to present and discuss “work-in-progress” or “experience-in-practice” of their current implementations and research prototypes that cover the topics of FMN 2010. Authors are invited to submit a short paper of up to 6 pages following the format of workshop. All accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings of FMN 2010. The workshop will retain the LAN/MAN mainstay of Local and Metropolitan area networking, including edge applications. This year, the workshop will also focus on two compelling issues for edge networks that are currently experiencing significant change and innovation: the first is the design of scalable architectures for enterprise and data center networks. This area is motivated by the evolution of mega-scale data centers for which traditional layer-2 network designs simply do not scale, as well as the need to better design enterprise networks that carry increasing high bit-rate traffic. The second focus area is the design of scalable mechanisms and protocols for network management and trouble-shooting in home and enterprise networks. Currently, many of these issues are handled manually --- this practice is simply not scalable as home and enterprise networks get larger and user needs get more demanding. LAN/MAN seeks both theoretical and experimental contributions. Single-track presentations are planned to stimulate technical exchange among researchers and practitioners with a broad interest in networking. We expect the workshop to be a forum for discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on new architectures, paradigms, concepts, and economic and service models. Novel and speculative ideas are particularly encouraged. We also encourage studies based on measurements from real-life networks and testbeds. Unlike existing wireless sensor networks which are composed of static sensors and sink nodes, wireless mobile sensor networks allows diverse entities to move within the network field all the time, e.g., mobile base station, mobile sensor nodes, mobile relay nodes, mobile cluster heads. Enabling mobility in traditional static sensor networks makes a great impact on most existing research solutions and poses a large number of research challenging issues in both communication and data management aspects, e.g., challenges for localization in mobile sensor networks, challenges for providing coverage services by mobile sensor networks, and challenges for data collection in mobile sensor networks. On the other hand, these challenges in mobile sensor networks also provides lots of opportunities that researchers can leverage the mobility feature to exploring improvement for traditional solutions and methods in various aspects, e.g., node localization, network coverage, and data collection/streaming/management. This special issue is seeking papers working on these challenges of the mobile ad hoc and sensor networks from the academia researchers and the industry practitioners, as well as papers that addressing various hot topics of the mobile sensor networks. SearchMonkey and Google. Moreover, social data about people and their interaction is made available in machine-understandable format in projects like FOAF or SIOC. Facing this amount of data, privacy and trust consideration is an important step to take right now. The challenging research questions arising from this movement include: * How do people know that the data gathered from several sources for reasoning purposes can be trusted? * How can one avoid that personal data exposed on the Semantic Web will be combined with other available semantic data in a way that sensitive information may be revealed? * How shall a safe reasoning process look like that does not end up in a conflict only because a single Semantic Web peer exposed a contradiction? We expect discussions and results concerning questions like these at SPOT2010 leading to solutions and research results in the realm of Semantic Web and social data for the pervasive issue of privacy and trust on the Web. Submissions for the Research Papers and Demos and Applications will be made using the EasyChair Conference System, and proceedings of the papers will be provided through the CEUR online service. The following types of contributions are welcome: * Research Papers: short (up to 6 pages) and full (up to 12 pages) technical papers that aims to explore how Semantic Web technologies can provide solutions to trust and privacy issues on the Web, focusing on one or more topics from the various ones identified within the main CFP. Especially, we very welcome papers focusing on theoretical work as well as applications regarding the benefits of Semantic Web technologies to solve these issues.
