The marriage of current wired-network-based social networks with mobile wireless networks triggers exciting new research areas. For instance, knowing the network features such as throughput and delay can help mobile social networks select a contact (e.g., a job advice centre) to which the network route has the best performance. This leads to the so-called wireless-aware social networks and the problem domain is within social networks. On the other hand, there is also social-aware or social inspired wireless network research where the knowledge of social network users is exploited for the benefit of wireless network design. Therefore, a cross-layer design that incorporates both the upper-layer mobile social networks and the lower-layer wireless networks is needed. And this comprises the thematic essence of this Special Issue. This cross-layer design method calls for a novel interdisciplinary research thinking that embraces not only these disciplines that are closely related to the field such as computer science, social science and network/communication engineering but also other subjects such as biology, physics, etc. The goal of this SI is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions that embark on the above interdisciplinary and cross-layer design methodologies to design and implement a better-performed mobile social network or wireless network. The goal of the second MobiHeld workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to investigate challenges in designing and utilizing this platform for the Internet of tomorrow. The management of content distribution services is an important key to attract and keep customers, while increasing profits to content providers. At the same time the complexity and dynamics of content networks require special solutions in order to provide efficient delivery and deployment of real-time multimedia services. Further, emerging diverse and heterogeneous wired and wireless systems is a challenging research objective. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols, as well as, the demand for improved Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE), and seamless mobility control creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols, architectures and methods towards Future Multimedia Networking Systems. Thus, one major challenge is the ever growing complexity of communication management and network maintenance. Solutions are required in which services, management and administration entities interact and behave autonomously, with the overall goal of creating content centric networks. The objective of the Future Multimedia Networking - FMN 2010 workshop is to discuss state-of-the-art research and developing activities contributing to aspects of multimedia systems, content networking, and autonomous communication. We are inviting both theoretical and experimental papers as well as work-in-progress research. This event encourages researchers to present and discuss “work-in-progress” or “experience-in-practice” of their current implementations and research prototypes that cover the topics of FMN 2010. Authors are invited to submit a short paper of up to 6 pages following the format of workshop. All accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings of FMN 2010. Based on short- and medium-range communication as well as on cellular systems, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular safety applications (including collision avoidance and safety warnings), efficiency applications (e.g.real-time traffic congestion and routing information) and other commercial or public authority applications (high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others). The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving VANET technologies presents an extraordinary challenge for the wireless research community. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular inter-networking in terms of mobility behavior, applications scenarios, and application requirements makes VANET research an exciting and demanding application- and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking. Furthermore, VANET present a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANET. These include research programs like the ones on cooperative systems within the eSafety framework of the European Union, the Intellidrive initiative in the US, Smartway, DSSS (Driving Safety Support System) and ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) in Japan, simTD in Germany and SCOREF in France. Standardization is well under way with the activities worldwide in ISO TC204 and IEEE (802.11p and 1609.x), SAE J2735 in the US, ETSI TC ITS and CEN WG278 in Europe and ARIB T-75 in Japan. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to the theory or practice of vehicular inter-networking (VANET). All submissions must describe original research results, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. Generally, progress has been relatively slow until a significant boost in the last few years became possible thanks to recent developments in standardization and enabling technology. The progress achieved in the development of the IEEE 802.11p standard for the PHY and MAC communication layers and the IEEE 1609 suite of standards defining higher-layer functionalities, such as resource management and security, and the allocation of spectrum in the Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) band in several countries, have led to growing experimental testbed evaluation of related technologies by industry and state road authorities. Despite these advances, the space of road and vehicular communications is in its infancy compared to more mature applications such as Wi-Fi or cellular networks, in both the fundamental research and the practical sense. There are many open questions remaining, ranging from physical-layer issues of the wireless channel behavior in the highly dynamic and interference-prone outdoor road environment, to specialized solutions for channel access, routing and mobility management, and to novel communication paradigms that go beyond the traditional point-to-point exchange of messages (e.g. geocasting). Above all, it is not yet clear which of the wealth of potential applications, ranging from safety and collision avoidance to driver assistance to traffic management to passenger infotainment, will take hold in the market and prove to be popular with the public. The Special Issue on Road and Vehicular Communications and Applications is soliciting original contributions on related advances in theoretical research, standardization work, experimental evaluation, and practical implementation and deployment. Submissions reporting on accomplished results as well as detailed surveys of the state-of-the-art are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Wireless channel behavior in the road and vehicular environment * Transceiver design for vehicles and roadside infrastructure * Medium-access protocols for vehicular communication * Protocols and algorithms for vehicular networks (VANET) * Cooperative communication and relaying * Opportunistic routing and forwarding * Location, navigation and mobility management * Geographical routing methods * Security and privacy in vehicular communications * V2V and V2I communications * Intra-vehicle wireless communication * Public transport communication systems * DSRC/WAVE standards * Experimental evaluation and testbed deployments * Applications of road and vehicular communications in safety and traffic management Submission Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers. Thereafter for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple access techniques. The aim of this workshop is to discuss both multi-user communications theory and multiple access techniques and standardization activities in areas related to PHY and MAC layer protocols - and their interactions - for contemporary networks. We intend to provide the experts from both the academic institutes and industry with an opportunity to present their state-of-the-art results and exchange the ideas on multiple access techniques and related areas: - PHY-layer multiple access techniques: CDMA, OFDMA, etc. - Link-layer MAC access protocols: duty-cycle, scheduled, random access, polling-based, etc. - PHY/MAC cross-layer techniques; - Multi-user information theory: broadcast, multi-access and (multiple) relay channel, multiuser detection, etc. - Queuing theory, modeling and analysis techniques: stochastic models, Markov models, new simulation models and tools. The MACOM 2010 event has special interest to address the new paradigms and theoretical foundations for future wireless communication systems. Sensor networks are increasingly being deployed within and around the human body to form Body Area Networks (BodyNets). In addition to monitoring focused applications BodyNets allow also for closed loop systems incorporating actuators. They can be utilized in diverse applications such as physiological monitoring, human computer interactions, education and entertainment through interactive games. This conference will explore and explain the scope and challenges of designing, building, and deploying BodyNets. In this regard, the conference aims to establish a forum to bring together research professionals from diverse fields including computer science, biomedical engineering and medicine in both academia and industry to address the technical, social, system and application issues related to BodyNets. TOPICS: The conference invites original technical papers that were not previously published and are not currently under review for publication elsewhere. Topics include, but are not limited to: 1 Communications and Networking: * In-body, on-body, and around body networks * Communication techniques and protocols for BodyNets * Scalable, flexible network architectures & deployments * Networking and security issues for BodyNets * Advanced propagation and channel model for BodyNets 2 Medical applications: * Pervasive health care and patient monitoring * Integrating BodyNets into the healthcare system * Novel closed-loop applications of BodyNets 3 Systems and Technology: * System design issues, and performance modeling * Signal processing, reliability and fault-tolerance issues * Emerging self-powered BodyNets * Novel wireless communication technologies 4 Wearable computing: * Wearable system design issues * Entertainment and lifestyle applications * Assistive technologies for independent aging * Interactive Arts PAPER SUBMISSION: Authors are invited to submit full papers of up to 7 pages for full papers, 4 pages for short papers, posters and demos, in ACM Proceedings format (7"x9" print area, single spaced, double column, 9-pt font size).
