These domains present new challenges that include expressing, verifying and validating requirements and ensuring functional correctness. Formal methods are one approach to address these challenges. Pervasive, self-adaptive and context-aware systems add additional concerns to classical safety-critical applications and require rethinking how to apply well-established formal methods. Examples of these approaches include state-action models (e.g., labeled transition system, timed automata, and Petri nets) or process models (e.g., pi-calculus). Alternatively, semi-formal methods like ontologies or UML, a common specification language for the describing software models, model knowledge for context-aware applications. Both formal and semi-formal methods have their advantages and disadvantages. This special issue will address the state of the art: the research challenges, and the available methods, methodologies and tools to specify, validate, and verify pervasive, self-adaptive and context-aware systems. Topics The special issue intends to focus on the above issues and solicits papers that address theoretical and experimental work related to formal and semi-formal methods for pervasive computing. Papers are solicited from, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Formal specification of pervasive, self-adaptive, self-organizing, and context-aware systems - Ontology based approaches - Specific UML profiles - Formal verification of specifications and implementations - Model-Checking techniques and tools - Run-time and automated verification - Methodologies, languages, and tools - Applications and experiences in critical scenarios (e.g. healthcare, disaster recovery, etc.) Submission Guidelines Papers should be up to 20 pages (appendixes are not included into the overall count of pages), formatted according to the guidelines provided at the ACM TAAS Web site (http://taas.acm.org/) and submitted via the TAAS manuscript central systems at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/taas Please make explicit in the cover page that your paper is intended as a submission to the special issue on Formal Methods for Pervasive, Self-Adaptive, and Context-Aware Systems. Call For Papers JCN SPECIAL ISSUE ON EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND APPLICATIONS OF WIRELESS COMMUNICATION IN HEALTHCARE PUBLICATION DATE: April 2011 With the emerging technologies of wireless communication, Healthcare systems can be significantly improved with lower cost and higher quality healthcare services, and more safety for patients. These benefits and impacts to the facilities of human society have fuelled increasing interests in the public and have attracted large support and investment from government, industrial and academic researchers. For wireless healthcare system assisted with Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN), the medical sensors implanted on/in body gather patients’ health information and transmit the private health information through heterogeneous wireless networks such as Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) and Wireless Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), in order for the patients to receive high quality healthcare services remotely on time regardless of patients’ physical location. However, this new form of healthcare system also poses critical requirements to traditional wireless networks and has promoted a promising research area recently. Challenges facing the wireless communications in healthcare systems include: definition of healthcare policy and legal issues towards potential new applications; the design of architectures among wireless communications for supporting safe and reliable signal propagation with low network latency; emergency response and detection; the need for privacy preservation of patients. This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research on emerging wireless technologies and applications in healthcare, highlighting research challenges and open issues and bringing together researchers and medical professionals from the academia, industry and government with the goal of fostering collaboration among them. Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles, reflecting those aspects of wireless communication research in healthcare distinctly different from wireless communication research in general are encouraged. The integration of heterogeneous networks in multi-access and multi-operator environment is revolutionizing the ICT area, introducing new opportunities, better communication channels and an enhanced quality of provided applications and services. In this environment, a user is able to connect to a number of heterogeneous RATs (Radio Access Technologies), either covering the same, or complementing geographical areas. These networks can be macro-cellular, WLANs, femto-cellular or even ad-hoc. In this environment, seamless mobility is coupled according to user preferences, enabling mobile users to be "Always Best Connected" (ABC) so that Quality of Experience is optimised and maintained. Topics of interest The proposed Workshop will report the results of latest research efforts on convergence among heterogeneous wireless systems in Future Internet. Recently, it has been reported that energy costs can account for as much as half of a mobile service provider's annual operating expenses. If the aggregate energy consumption of networking devices would follow the growth trajectories of Internet traffic (i.e., about 60% per year), the environmental and financial consequences will be dire. Thus, making ICT equipment and applications "greener" can not only have a tangible positive impact on environment, but also help operators attain long-term profitability. Moreover, green communications can help the world reduce dependence on fossil fuel, enable demand response and distributed energy resources, and ultimately achieve sustainable prosperity. Accordingly, a myriad of communications and information technologies have already been exploited by the global smart grid initiatives to empower conventional power grid to support two-way energy and information flow. To meet the green communications challenges, we have to resort to a plethora of paradigm-shifting technologies, including but not limiting to energy-efficient network architecture & protocols, energy-efficient wireless transmission techniques, energy-efficient home networking, energy-aware backbone networks, Smart Grid, and opportunistic spectrum sharing without causing harmful interference pollution (e.g., Green Spectrum). This IEEE Communications Magazine special issue (feature topic issue) aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in technology, regulation and standardization for "Green Communications", and present a holistic view of research challenges and opportunities in the coming green era. For many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed value instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile smart networks, and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. Is it more effective to use fixed gateways? Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks new vulnerabilities will take place. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Finally, social multimedia is also expected to improve the performance of traditional multimedia information search and retrieval approaches by contributing to bridge the semantic gap. The integration of these aspects, however, is not trivial and has created a new interdisciplinary area of research. In any case, there is a common issue that needs to be addressed in all the previously identified social multimedia applications: the interoperability and extensibility of their applications. This is an interdisciplinary field by its very nature: advances in many areas such as computer architecture, operating systems and compilers are all needed to reduce the energy consumption. Many of the proposed ideas have a direct impact on how networks are designed and provisioned. The power consumption of network infrastructure has itself come under scrutiny. At the same time, we have begun to see networking technologies play a significant role in reducing energy consumption in other domains such as utility networks and transportation systems. The First Green Networking workshop at SIGCOMM will focus on networking issues involved in designing green infrastructures in both computing and non-computing domains. We welcome papers that utilize networking technologies and principles to other domains besides traditional networking areas such as transit, energy that influence our daily life. The marriage of current wired-network-based social networks with mobile wireless networks triggers exciting new research areas. For instance, knowing the network features such as throughput and delay can help mobile social networks select a contact (e.g., a job advice centre) to which the network route has the best performance. This leads to the so-called wireless-aware social networks and the problem domain is within social networks. On the other hand, there is also social-aware or social inspired wireless network research where the knowledge of social network users is exploited for the benefit of wireless network design. Therefore, a cross-layer design that incorporates both the upper-layer mobile social networks and the lower-layer wireless networks is needed. And this comprises the thematic essence of this Special Issue. This cross-layer design method calls for a novel interdisciplinary research thinking that embraces not only these disciplines that are closely related to the field such as computer science, social science and network/communication engineering but also other subjects such as biology, physics, etc. The goal of this SI is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions that embark on the above interdisciplinary and cross-layer design methodologies to design and implement a better-performed mobile social network or wireless network. Recently it has become increasingly popular to utilize sensor networks for providing various services, e.g., audio/video surveillance, real-time monitoring, etc. Such WSN functionality demands the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in terms of delay, jitter, loss, or throughput using intelligent resource reservation schemes, policy-based service provision, etc. Enabling QoS guarantees in large-scale WSNs, while utilizing the network resources in the most efficient way, is critical for the success and life-time of the service-oriented WSNs. Providing QoS in WSNs involves addressing various technological issues, e.g., inherent limitations of sensors, varying network loads, network congestion, multi-path routing, changing channel capacity as a function of environment, time, and interference from neighbors, mobility and cross-layer design, etc. In addition, the trade-off between predictable network behavior and network lifetime, as well as between policy-based route selection and load distribution need further investigation. Privacy of sensor information is also a concern since multiple sensors share/access a common media. QoS2N workshop aims at providing a platform for discussing the above issues, recent challenges and solutions, and directions for future research on enabling QoS in WSNs. Researchers, professionals and application developers from industry and academia are welcome to exchange ideas, discuss results, and share experience in a broad range of topics related to QoS and sensor networking. Both theoretical and practical experience papers are solicited. Work-in-progress and position papers are welcome. Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSN), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSAN are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN, WSN, robot networks, and robotics and automation. Visionary, early-stage works that are rigorously presented and can steer discussion to new topics are particularly welcome. We are actively encouraging researchers to share their views, research proposals and solutions for multimedia applications over wireless networks. Since the first workshop edition in 2006, the proliferation of wireless access technologies and multimedia applications over IP networks is leading to a growing interest in the convergence between wireless networks and multimedia applications. However, the strict requirements of multimedia applications, the unreliability of wireless media and the cost of wireless resources make this convergence very challenging.
