Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSN), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSAN are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN, WSN, robot networks, and robotics and automation. In spite of the increasing demand for multimedia wireless networking, we are still lacking a clear understanding of analytical and computational techniques, as well as best practices, to design resource allocation schemes, communication protocols, and self-organization algorithms for wireless multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks that will deliver, in a predictable and quantifiable fashion, the quality of service and experience required by the end user. In addition, while significant advances in physical layer techniques offer new opportunities for cross-layer optimizations designed to satisfy application needs, efforts to leverage these techniques from a networking perspective to support the needs of multimedia traffic demands in multi-hop wireless networks are still at initial stages. In particular, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radios, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques, ultra-wide-band and cooperative communications, among other techniques, will have a profound impact on our ability to flexibly and predictably deliver multimedia content over wireless networks. Finally, with a few exceptions, processing of multimedia content has mostly been approached as a problem isolated from the network-design problem. However, in-network processing and delivery of multimedia content are not independent and their interaction has a major impact on the levels of quality of service (QoS) that can be delivered. Hence, it is necessary to develop flexible and self-organizing architectures and algorithms to flexibly perform in-network processing of multimedia contents. This special issue solicits papers on all aspects of multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks, with a primary focus on three key aspects. First, content-aware cross-layer design and resource allocation techniques, as well as new networking protocols based on metrics associated with quality of service/video/experience are of particular interest. Second, original papers examining networking aspects that leverage advances in physical and multiple access techniques to support multimedia traffic are particularly welcome. Third, papers investigating the interdependencies between multimedia in-network processing and networking aspects are sought, e.g., architectures and techniques to store, process in real-time, correlate and fuse multimedia data originating from heterogeneous sources. Analytical methods, simulation tools and laboratory experimentation were used to validate the proposals and demonstrate that the solutions put forth should work as expected. However, many such solutions failed (and sometimes quite dramatically) when deployed in a real-world application context. This is often the consequence of making ill-informed assumptions about the environment in which the WSN will be deployed, lack of attention to specific conditions that will be encountered in the deployment and incomplete application specification. In addition, good solutions for many important real-world deployment problems are missing. For example, mechanisms for dealing with missing data, in-network debugging tools or fault management strategies for real deployments are required. This special issue has several aims: * to collect insights from real-world deployment efforts that can help the WSN community to better understand the issues needed to be accounted for when designing WSN protocols, architectures and algorithms; * to document particular real-world deployment issues encountered by practical scientists and highlight more generic WSN solutions and tools born from practical, deployment experience; * to report on WSN protocols and mechanisms that have had, in the past, only a theoretical treatment but have recently been proven to work well in real-world deployments. We are seeking contributions describing innovative work in the realm of real-world WSN deployments. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Issues with deployment assumptions: setting realistic application requirements; user interaction with the WSN design process and with the end systems; the use of communication channel and sensor and sensing models; experiences with communication protocols, energy management and expected network lifetime; in-network processing; real-time issues in deployed systems; effective information extraction strategies. * Supporting tools and methods for real-world deployment: deployment and debugging tools; on-the fly programming, configuration and installation support; management of deployed sensor networks; security, availability and dependability issues in sensor networks; fault-tolerance and troubleshooting sensor networks; network health monitoring and management; practical medium access control protocols; topology control and routing protocols in real-world deployments; practical localization and time synchronization. * Novel real-life WSN applications: deployment success stories leading to technology adoption; failure stories leading to iterative hw/sw developments and re-deployment; novel measurement instruments based on WSNs. Notes for Prospective Authors: The scope of this call is restricted to work that falls within the remit of the MST Journal. Articles should bring forth new WSN based measurement techniques and systems, significant improvements to existing measurement techniques or describe the application of existing techniques in novel situations. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Expanded, archival versions of papers delivered at technical conferences are welcomed. Along with the rapid development of hardware and embedded systems, ad hoc and sensor networks are being further developed towards a large number of mobile and multimedia applications, e.g., video surveillance, traffic enforcement and control systems, advanced healthcare delivery, structural health monitoring, and industrial process control. To eventually realise these mobility and multimedia technologies combined applications, significant efforts are still needed from both the academic community and industrial fields, since the requirements for supporting both mobility and multimedia streaming in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks raise many challenging issues, e.g., mobile network self-organisation, limited resource intelligent allocation, cross-layer optimisation, and intelligent content-aware transmission. In this special issue, we solicit research papers on all aspects of mobile, multimedia, ad hoc and sensor networks. We are especially interested in the research submissions focusing on the following four key aspects: * Congestion control problem: when multiple multimedia source nodes are deployed in wireless multimedia sensor networks and they try to send out the streaming data to a single base station at the same time, a well designed congestion control scheme is essential * Mobility support problem: when both multimedia source nodes and sink nodes can be mobile, it is easy to see that there is an opportunity to apply the game theory to further solve some of the more complicated optimisation problems * Duty-cycle support problem: when sensor nodes in the wireless multimedia sensor networks are random duty-cycled based, the network topology and connectivity of sensor networks can change from time to time. It is important to further investigate a cross layer optimised sensor node sleeping scheduling scheme to guarantee the network connectivity for packet delivery * Target tracking problem: when multiple video sensor nodes are deployed to tracking a certain target in the sensor networks, it is important to further explore the collaboration between multiple video sensor nodes for facilitating the target tracking task. The objective of special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of mobile, multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review are solicited. Meanwhile, we have witnessed the unprecedented development and growth of new applications and services in recent years ranging from peer-to-peer (P2P) based applications, image and video applications, location-based services, secured transactions, online hosting services, machine-to-machine (M2M) interactions, and cloud computing. These new applications and emerging services have, in different degree, demanded better than the current best-effort quality of service. The future Internet is expected to be more agile, scalable, secure and reliable, which has been considered and pursued in research projects such as NSF FIND (Future Internet Design) and GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations) programs in the United States, and EIFFEL (Evolved Internet Future for European Leadership) and FIREworks (Future Internet Research and Experimentation - Strategy Works) projects in Europe. Such ever-emerging applications with different requirements and implications for the future Internet design pose a significantly new set of problems and challenges, which are not well understood, specifically : 1) how can they be efficiently provisioned in the future Internet? 2) how can the future Internet be evolved and/or re-designed possible with radical changes to cater for new applications and services? The goal of this special issue is to feature recent and emerging Internet applications and services, their performance, impact, demands and implications for future Internet design. Scope: Papers should contain substantial tutorial content and be accessible to a general audience of researchers and practitioners. Applications comprise a wide range of system capabilities including cloud computing, mobile laptops or PDAs, as well as cell phones, sensor networks, and deeply embedded devices. Thus, for functional and ecological reasons energy awareness and energy-aware operation are fundamental demands for any system. In recent years, a new research domain was established as an interdisciplinary field among different areas of computer science (e.g., operating systems and computer networks) and electrical engineering (e.g., wireless communication and chip design). Based on findings in the field of energy-aware systems and methods, novel application scenarios can be envisioned encompassing even stronger requirements on reliability, resilience, lifetime, adaptability, and self-organization. This workshop aims to provide a forum to discuss recent results in the field of energy-awareness that is a cross-cutting concern in many areas in systems research. Based on intensive discussions of energy-critical issues in the different layers and the different approaches to energy-aware system design, the participants will be able to study energy-related problems from multiple perspectives and to look into the complex interactions among those layers. Such a network consists of many small sensor nodes with sensing, control, data processing, communications, and networking capabilities. The wireless sensor networks have a broad spectrum applications ranging from wild life monitoring and battlefield surveillance to border control and disaster relief, and have attracted significant interests from both academy and industry. A wireless sensor node generally has limited storage and computation capabilities, as well as severely constrained power supplies, and the networks often operate in harsh unattended environments. Successful design and deployment of wireless sensor networks thus call for technology advances and integrations in diverse fields including embedded hardware manufacturing and signal processing as well as wireless communications and networking across all layers. We have seen the initial and incremental deployment of real sensor networks in the past decade, for example, the ZebraNet for wildlife tracking, the CitySense for weather and air pollutants reporting, and the Sensormap portal for generic monitoring services, to name but a few; yet the full potentials of such networks in the real world remain to be explored and demonstrated, which involves numerous practical challenges in diverse aspects. This special issue aims to summarize the latest development in the design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless sensor systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Practical architecture and protocol design for sensor communications and networking * Management, monitoring, and diagnosis of sensor networks * Implementation and measurement of experimental systems and testbeds * Experience with real-world deployments of wireless sensor networks * Interactions with ubiquitous communication and networking infrastructures * Novel killer applications of wireless sensor networks We solicit original unpublished research papers only. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. It is anticipated that wireless multimedia services (WMS) will change the way we operate and interact with the world with the development of numerous interesting wireless multimedia applications. The new possibilities of wireless multimedia computing pose several research challenges. One of the challenges is security issue in WMN. Therefore, in WMNs, not only novel techniques, algorithms, architectures and experiences regarding multimedia applications but also security services should be considered. This special issue will focus on the challenges and issues related to wireless multimedia networks and the security services. Doctoral students working in areas related to opportunistic networking and computing are solicited to submit an extended abstract comprising a summary of their research findings, work in progress and planned research. The forum will be a platform for Phd students to interact both with their peers as well as experienced researchers from industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session preceded by a '1-minute madness' introduction by each student. Current Ph.D. students, as well as researchers who have completed their Ph.D. dissertations since May 2009, are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract. Submissions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to travel to MobiOpp 2010 to present their poster at the Doctoral Forum. The best presentation at the Forum, will receive an award sponsored by Elsevier Publications and there is likely to be travel assistance for some students. Accepted extended abstracts will appear in conference proceedings. *Extended Abstract Submission*: Ph.D. students are invited to submit two-page extended abstracts that describe current research and potential contributions to theory and innovation in pervasive computing and communications. Submissions must be received by no later than December 14, 2009. Extended abstracts should include the author's name, affiliation, and email address. Despite this, given their distributed nature, they share a large amount of problems and issues (e.g. efficient delivery of updates, synchronization, load-balancing). The aim of this workshop is to address the current and future trends in these topics with a particular attention to aspects that are in common, with the goal to foster interdisciplinary collaborative research in this areas. While the main focus of the workshop is on simulation tools and gaming technologies, the workshop also encourages the submission of broader theoretical and practical research contributions, such as the report of relevant case studies. Cross-disciplinary position papers, posing problems and giving input to the involved communities, are particularly encouraged. Furthermore, one of the aim of the workshop is to bring academic and industry researchers together with practitioners.
