Vehicular networks aim to ensure traffic safety for drivers, provide comfort for passengers and reduce transportation time and fuel consumption. The development of vehicular communication and networking technologies are expected to enable many potential applications , including automatic collision notification and prevention, emergency management, assistances for safe driving, real-time traffic congestion notification, location-based driver information services, high-speed tolling, vehicle tracking, automobile Internet access, and many others. To facilitate these applications, many different types of communication and networking would be involved, including intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle (V-to-V), vehicle-to-roadside (V-to-R) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V-to-I) communications. This special issue aims to foster the dissemination of high-quality, original, unpublished research covering all aspects related to the Vehicular Communications, Networks, and Applications. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide in Europe, US and Asia. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful first and second WiVeC editions in 2007 and 2008, the third IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 71th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2010 Spring conference, and will take place at the Grand Hotel in Taipei on the 16th and 17th of May 2010. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. All accepted papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the VTC 2010-Spring conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. Note: VTC Fall editions are traditionally located in North America, while VTC Spring is located in other areas of the world. Since WiVeC was originally launched co-located with VTC Fall editions, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society decided that WiVeC would take place every year and a half in order to ensure that the conference is alternatively co-located with VTC Fall and Spring editions. This resulted in that there was no WiVeC edition in 2009. Topics of interest ------------------ The WiVec Symposium seeks original papers - not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal - in the area of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-person (V2P) wireless communications. Applications comprise a wide range of system capabilities including cloud computing, mobile laptops or PDAs, as well as cell phones, sensor networks, and deeply embedded devices. Thus, for functional and ecological reasons energy awareness and energy-aware operation are fundamental demands for any system. In recent years, a new research domain was established as an interdisciplinary field among different areas of computer science (e.g., operating systems and computer networks) and electrical engineering (e.g., wireless communication and chip design). Based on findings in the field of energy-aware systems and methods, novel application scenarios can be envisioned encompassing even stronger requirements on reliability, resilience, lifetime, adaptability, and self-organization. This workshop aims to provide a forum to discuss recent results in the field of energy-awareness that is a cross-cutting concern in many areas in systems research. Based on intensive discussions of energy-critical issues in the different layers and the different approaches to energy-aware system design, the participants will be able to study energy-related problems from multiple perspectives and to look into the complex interactions among those layers. We especially encourage PhD students to participate, to share their ideas and findings, and to network with other fellows working in the same field. In cloud computing, information is permanently stored in large data centers on the Internet and temporarily accessed and cached on clients that include desktops and portable PCs, sensors, etc. With the "cloud" as a metaphor for the Internet, cloud computing promises to deliver massively scalable IT-enabled data, software, and hardware capabilities as a service to external clients using Internet technologies. Cloud computing has been envisioned as the key technology to achieve economies of scale in the deployment and operation of IT solutions. Cloud computing has unique attributes that raise many security and privacy challenges in areas such as data security, recovery, and privacy, as well as legal issues in areas such as regulatory compliance and auditing. In contrast to traditional enterprise IT solutions, where the IT services are under proper physical, logical and personnel controls, cloud computing moves the application software and databases to the servers in large data centers on the Internet, where the management of the data and services are not fully trustworthy. When clients store their data on the server without themselves possessing a copy of it, how the integrity of the data can be ensured if the server is not fully trustworthy? Will encryption solve the data confidentiality problem of sensitive data? How will encryption affect dynamic data operations such as query, insertion, modification, and deletion? Data in the cloud is typically in a shared environment alongside data from other clients. How the data segregation should be done, while data are stored, executed, and transmitted? How the virtulized resources is being managed and secured in the cloud? Due to the fundamental paradigm shift in cloud computing, many security concerns have to be better understood, unanticipated vulnerabilities identified, and viable solutions to critical threats devised, before the wide deployment of cloud computing techniques can take place. Wireless mesh networks are expected to be a key element of this future by providing a highly scalable, reliable and cost-effective wireless backbone to mobile devices a multi-hop wireless communication system. However, there are still a lot of technical challenges that need to be solved in order to reach the full potentialities of this innovative technology. This workshop aims to bring together the technologist and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions on recent advances in the analysis design and implementation of systems, protocols and services for next generation mobile mesh networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at all layers of mesh networks, from application to physical layer. Recently it has become increasingly popular to utilize sensor networks for providing various services, e.g., audio/video surveillance, real-time monitoring, etc. Such WSN functionality demands the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in terms of delay, jitter, loss, or throughput using intelligent resource reservation schemes, policy-based service provision, etc. Enabling QoS guarantees in large-scale WSNs, while utilizing the network resources in the most efficient way, is critical for the success and life-time of the service-oriented WSNs. Providing QoS in WSNs involves addressing various technological issues, e.g., inherent limitations of sensors, varying network loads, network congestion, multi-path routing, changing channel capacity as a function of environment, time, and interference from neighbors, mobility and cross-layer design, etc. In addition, the trade-off between predictable network behavior and network lifetime, as well as between policy-based route selection and load distribution need further investigation. Privacy of sensor information is also a concern since multiple sensors share/access a common media. QoS2N workshop aims at providing a platform for discussing the above issues, recent challenges and solutions, and directions for future research on enabling QoS in WSNs. Researchers, professionals and application developers from industry and academia are welcome to exchange ideas, discuss results, and share experience in a broad range of topics related to QoS and sensor networking. Both theoretical and practical experience papers are solicited. Work-in-progress and position papers are welcome. This results in an unprecedented request for lightweight, wireless communication devices with excellent usability and performance as well as the ability to support added-value services in a highly mobile environment - following the user everywhere he goes (at work, at home, while travelling, in a classroom, etc.). Besides attractive business opportunities this opens up exciting research and development areas. This scenario clearly demands significant upgrades to the existing communication paradigm in terms of infrastructure, devices and services to support the ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANY DEVICE philosophy, introducing novel and fast-evolving requirements and expectations on research and development in the field of information and communication technologies. The core issue is to support wireless users' desire of 24/7 reliable network availability and transparent access to "their own" personalized services. In this framework and motivated by the interdisciplinary competences needed to build successful lightweight wireless systems, the MOBILIGHT conference will provide an international forum where practitioners and researchers coming from the diverse areas involved in lightweight wireless systems design and deployment will be able to interact and exchange experiences, and thus realize cross-fertilization among the different worlds of academia, research centers and industry.
