Security and Communication Networks Journal (Wiley) Special issue on: Security Challenges in Emerging and Next-Generation Wireless Communication Networks Wireless network technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different wireless networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Concepts such as dynamic spectrum access, convergence, unified network architectures and seamless service access in heterogeneous networks are gaining widespread popularity. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMAX, Bluetooth, ZigBee, RFID, IEEE 802.20, IEEE 802.22 and software defined radio are becoming increasingly popular. The workshop will try to build a bridge between the mobile communications industry and academic research so that future collaborations between two sectors can be identified. The goal of future wireless networks is to provide ubiquitous connections and support high data rate demand. The WiMAX, LTE, and LTE-Advanced standardizations have already processed toward this direction but still require significant improvements. Network planning and optimization faces many challenges arising from the use of new air interfaces and new technologies (e.g., MIMO, smart antennas, cooperative relay), the mix of voice, vide o and data traffic, the co-existence of different RATs (Radio Access Technologies), the growing importance of indoor coverage and the paradigm shifts (e.g., femtocells). The future wireless networks cannot operate efficiently, unless these challenges are properly addressed. In this workshop, the advances of wireless communications that enable future wireless networks and challenges in network planning and optimization arising from the adoption of new technologies will be discussed. PlanNet seeks papers dealing with architectural issues, theoretical studies, new paradigms, enabling technologies, practical implementations, and policy issues for future wireless communications and network planning and optimization problems. Besides the technical insights, the workshop will provide a supportive environment for technical discussions between like-minded researchers and engineers. The World Telecommunications Congress brings together leading experts from industry, academia and government to map out the future requirements for telecommunications technologies, applications and policy. The World Telecommunications Congress (WTC) builds on the traditions of quality, timeliness and open interaction from its origins in the ISS (International Switching Symposium) and ISSLS (International Symposium on Services and Local Access). Even despite the global economic downturn that has hit the car industry hard, research continues in this area, as new technical challenges have evolved that demand research and development. Industry players like the automobile companies, and government agencies, like the US Department of Transportation, are investing heavily in research and development in VII. Technologies and applications for VII are rapidly emerging, and there is an critical need to bring together researchers & engineers, academia and industry, standards, private and public sectors, to exchange ideas. This workshop is intended to serve as a forum and bring together the researchers and engineers in both academia and industry to exchange ideas, share experiences, and report original work about all aspects of vehicular communications, VANETs, information dissemination, road safety, ITS, emergency services, etc.. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, algorithms, and applications for inter-vehicular communication environments. This workshop will also address some leading standardization efforts (802.11p, p1609, TIA TR48, etc.). Work in progress is also welcome. Key industrial players (GM, Toyota, Telcordia, BMW, etc.) will be represented at this workshop. PAPER SUBMISSION Please, submit your papers through EDAS. In addition, they include monitoring applications such as video surveillance, traffic enforcement and control systems, advanced health care delivery, structural health monitoring, and industrial process control. In spite of the increasing demand for multimedia wireless networking, we are still lacking a clear understanding of analytical and computational techniques, as well as best practices, to design resource allocation schemes, communication protocols, and self-organization algorithms for wireless multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks that will deliver, in a predictable and quantifiable fashion, the quality of service and experience required by the end user. In addition, while significant advances in physical layer techniques offer new opportunities for cross-layer optimizations designed to satisfy application needs, efforts to leverage these techniques from a networking perspective to support the needs of multimedia traffic demands in multi-hop wireless networks are still at initial stages. In particular, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radios, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques, ultra-wide-band and cooperative communications, among other techniques, will have a profound impact on our ability to flexibly and predictably deliver multimedia content over wireless networks. Finally, with a few exceptions, processing of multimedia content has mostly been approached as a problem isolated from the network-design problem. However, in-network processing and delivery of multimedia content are not independent and their interaction has a major impact on the levels of quality of service (QoS) that can be delivered. Hence, it is necessary to develop flexible and self-organizing architectures and algorithms to flexibly perform in-network processing of multimedia contents. This special issue solicits papers on all aspects of multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks, with a primary focus on three key aspects. First, content-aware cross-layer design and resource allocation techniques, as well as new networking protocols based on metrics associated with quality of service/video/experience are of particular interest. Second, original papers examining networking aspects that leverage advances in physical and multiple access techniques to support multimedia traffic are particularly welcome. Third, papers investigating the interdependencies between multimedia in-network processing and networking aspects are sought, e.g., architectures and techniques to store, process in real-time, correlate and fuse multimedia data originating from heterogeneous sources. The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of multimedia content delivery over ad hoc and sensor networks. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference are solicited. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. Many MAC, routing protocols, scheduling scheme were proposed to promote energy conservation without degrading the performance of the network. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. During the last years, the wide-scale deployment of wireless access and the emerging of new access technologies, such as 802.16, Beyond 3G cellular packet systems, and Wireless Mesh Networks, as well as the ever-increasing popularity of applications requiring Quality of Service (QoS), such as Voice over IP and video streaming, have made the thorough and sound assessment of QoS a challenging but indispensable task for the evolution towards a future Internet. Furthermore, emerging user-centric and service-oriented network paradigms require new definitions of QoS and service attributes, closer to the user perception, as well as new simulation models to assess them. Last, but not least, new research directions in networking architectures, advocating a long-term disruptive or “clean slate” (re-)design of the Internet, also demand new simulation tools and techniques to prove the feasibility and assess the performance of the proposed solutions. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic and industry researchers and practitioners from both the networking and the simulation communities to discuss current and future trends in simulation techniques, models and practices for the Future Internet and to foster interdisciplinary collaborative research in this area. The workshop values both theoretical and practical research contributions. Some examples of features where biological networks have an advantage include their ability to maintain homeostatic environments, adapt rapidly to environmental changes, self-organize, assemble simple structures into complex tasks, autonomous operations, self-replication, protection against attacks of various natures, etc. While computer networking has many features which perform better than any biological system, it is a reasonable proposition that application of biologically inspired techniques to computing systems and networks will improve on the current state of the art in computer networks. This special issue is focused on highlighting approaches for designing computer networks that are biologically inspired, and which show an improvement in some aspect of the current state of computer networking. The goal is to develop techniques that improve the adaptability, scalability and autonomicity of comptuer networks. We welcome papers that provide new architectures and insights, real-world experience in building biological systems, theoretical advances in biological networks, and any other area of bio-inspired improvements to computer networks. Any paper that covers a technology which has a clear connection to a biological system and a demonstrable advantage to computer networks will be considered within scope. We welcome both tutorial type papers, as well as papers describing new research activities. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research on wireless networks having attractive claims. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different wireless networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, 802.20, 802.22 and software defined radio are gaining popularity. Even though these technologies hold great promises for our future, there are several research challenges that need to be addressed. Some of these research challenges are attributed to the simulation, modeling and characterization of these emerging wireless networks. Call for papers: IEEE SUTC 2010 The Third IEEE Intl. Conf. on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and Trustworthy Computing June 7-9, 2010 Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Newport Beach, California, USA http://sutc2010.eecs.uci.edu The availability of small, low-cost, and low-power sensors, radios, and microcontrollers has triggered a huge wave of research in networked embedded sensing systems. As a result, different research communities have emerged that work on related aspects, but have slightly different foci. A focus of the sensor network community is on energy-efficient systems and networking solutions. While these aspects are also fundamental for ubiquitous computing, a focus of the latter community is on user interaction. The currently emerging cyber-physical systems community emphasizes the integration of actuation and control. Despite these differences, the realization of the above visions involves a common fundamental challenge: The need for trustworthy computing solutions to deliver secure, private, and reliable computing and communication services. The aim of the IEEE International Conference on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and Trustworthy Computing (SUTC 2010) is to bring together the above communities to exchange latest results, to join efforts in solving the common challenges, but also to contrast the developments in the different communities. To support this goal, the conference will feature several (serial) tracks devoted to sensor networks, ubiquitous computing, and cyber-physical systems, as well as tracks devoted to common themes such as pervasive services and data management, embedded networking, and trustworthy computing. In addition, the conference features invited talks and panel discussions. TOPICS OF INTEREST Submissions of high quality papers describing mature results or on-going work are invited.
