CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue of Computer Communications on Multimedia Networking and Security in Convergent Networks http://www.elsevier.com/locate/comcom Scope: Authors are invited to submit detailed technical manuscripts reporting recent developments in the topics related to the special issue. Note the special emphasis on convergent and heterogeneous networks – this special issue is devoted to exploring the challenges and solutions for multimedia communication and security in convergent network environments. The new challenge in network management is to deal with heterogeneous client capabilities as well as dynamic end-to-end resources availability, and to ensure satisfactory service quality for every client. The new challenge in secure communication is to solve the privacy and security issues becoming increasingly important topics in network convergence. CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Autonomous and Adaptive Communications Systems (IJAACS) http://www.inderscience.com/browse/callpaper.php?callID=1254 Special Issue on: "Ubiquitous Deployments of Body Sensor Networks" The rapid growth in medical sensing technologies with low power requirements and wireless data transmission has led to ubiquitous deployments of body sensor networks (BSNs), i.e. networks of sensors worn on or implanted in a person, sensing vital readings and transmitting these (wirelessly) to a base station. Applications are often in the healthcare domain, for keeping an eye on one’s health status or for monitoring chronic conditions (diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular issues). This data can then be forwarded to clinicians, carers or hospitals in real time (especially important for alerts). In the past, existing wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been modified as BSNs for usage in biomedical applications. However, traditional WSNs suffer from various limitations when they are deployed in such applications, including restricted bandwidth capabilities and limits in terms of computational power (especially considering the amount of data that is being read, processed and streamed or transmitted). Therefore, modified WSN frameworks alone are often deemed to be infeasible for BSN applications, and substantial research is required to overcome these and other limitations by taking into account the requirements for biomedical sensing applications. As these BSNs become ubiquitous - monitoring not just chronic conditions but a person’s everyday health - new challenges in terms of secure communications, interoperability and device size become evident. This special issue will publish high-quality papers that describe how various issues in the deployment of ubiquitous body sensor networks have been addressed by researchers and practitioners in this domain. Distinguished papers accepted and presented at UBSN 2010, after further revisions, will also be included in the issue. Subject Coverage: Some of the topics that may be described include but are not limited to: * Interoperability o BSN systems must ensure seamless data transfer across standards such as Bluetooth or ZigBee to encourage information exchange, plug-and-play device interaction, etc. The definition of standards for data exchange may be required. * Scalability o Systems should be scalable, ensuring efficient migration for a patient or person across networks and offering uninterrupted connectivity for those both wearing and monitoring UBSNs. * Privacy o Transmission of data within UBSNs and between UBSNs and other networks must be both secure and precise, e.g. to avoid a patient’s data being corrupted or accidentally including another patient’s readings. * Security o Some consider BSN technologies as a potential threat to their privacy (or even safety), if applications could be tampered with beyond their intended exclusive medical usage. Social acceptance is key to UBSNs finding wider application, but extensive testing and reviews can aid with such reassurances. * Devices o The sensors used in UBSNs should be light, low in complexity, have reduced form factors, and be easily reconfigurable. * Storage o Storage devices are needed to facilitate remote storage and viewing of patient data via the Internet, as well as allowing access to background processing algorithms and analysis tools. Following continuous advances in wireless communication technologies, there has been growing interest in the design, development and deployment of BSN systems in applications for improving people's daily life, which has led to an increased demand for interconnecting BSNs with other emerging wireless technologies, such as RFID technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiBree, video surveillance systems, WPAN, WLAN, the Internet, and cellular networks. With BSNs being incorporated into these technologies, BSNs have become ubiquitous. As a result of this, and due to an increased demand for advanced e-healthcare management systems in recent years, the marketing opportunities for advanced consumer electronics and related services have greatly increased. More and more autonomous and intelligent applications which are closely integrated with a person's everyday life are being generated. For example, by using BSNs to collect patient information, and by deploying diverse wireless networking systems for enhanced diagnostic assistance and action handling, better e-healthcare management systems can be designed for providing more desirable services. In this workshop, we solicit research papers (regular papers and posters) on hardware for body sensors, system architectures, networking and communication protocols, applications, testbeds and prototypes, biomedical sensor data processing and sensor data management. In particular, we are interested in the following communication issues: * Intra-BSN Communication: The term "intra-BSN communication" defines communications directly related to the user (within radio coverage of about 2 meters), which consists of two categories: (1) the communications amongst the body sensors, which are deployed strategically on the human body, implanted inside the body, or attached within in the person's clothing; (2) the communication between the body sensors and the portable personal server, which typically can be a cell phone, PDA or headset. * Inter-BSN communication: The term "inter-BSN communication" defines communications between the personal server and one or more access points. The access point can be deployed as a part of a home or work infrastructure, or strategically placed within a dynamic environment for handling emergency situations. Inter-BSN communications will interconnect BSNs with the wide range of networks which are easily accessible in daily life. * Beyond-BSN communication: Beyond-BSN communication is used to interconnect a BSN with the outside world, which enhances the application possibilities and brings the coverage / range of body sensor systems a step further via pervasive communication technologies, such as the Internet and cellular networks. The objective of this workshop is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of Ubiquitous Body Sensor Networks. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference/workshop are solicited. The Second International Workshop on Information Quality and Quality of Service for Pervasive Computing (IQ2S 2010) http://www.iq2s.org in conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2010 (http://www.percom.org/) Mannheim, Germany, March 29 - April 2, 2010 CALL FOR PAPERS Pervasive computing enables computers to interact with the real world in a ubiquitous and natural manner. It is, in its core, an application-driven discipline encompassing the pervasive acquisition, transportation, processing, and consumption of information from diverse sources, including widespread sensor deployments. Thus, the traditional study of QoS in transporting sensory data in pervasive systems ought to be balanced with the study of QoI in delivering sensor-originated information. Quality of Information (QoI) or Information Quality (IQ) relates to informationÕs level of fitness for a purpose, e.g., when contributing to an applicationÕs utility. Harnessing and optimizing the QoI derived from sensor networks will be key to bringing together effectively the aforementioned acquisition, transportation, processing, and consumption elements that the broad spectrum of smart, information-intensive, sensor-enabled pervasive applications depend on, such as remote habitat monitoring, utility grid monitoring, environmental control, supply-chain management, healthcare, intelligent transportation systems, military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR), border control, and hazardous material monitoring, just to mention a few. The effectiveness of an applicationÕs actions using a piece of information serves as the ultimate measure of the informationÕs quality and value-add; an action may be highly effective achieving all its anticipated goals, partially effective, or entirely ineffective. Complementing traditional provisioning of QoS with QoI and action effectiveness for pervasive computing is challenging and difficult due to the resource constrained, dynamic and distributed nature of the sensory systems involved, their security weaknesses, and so on. Novel mechanisms and designs are required which integrate QoI with network and computational QoS that take into account the aforementioned challenges while dealing with different types of sensory resources and their inter-dependencies. It is an objective of this workshop to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers working on QoI and QoS in wireless sensor networks for pervasive computing. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of QoI and QoS in wireless sensor networks for pervasive computing. *******Topics******* Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of QoI and QoS provisioning in pervasive computing are solicited. Papers describing experience on real prototype implementations are particularly welcome. The main advantages of WSN include its low cost, rapid deployment, self-organization, and fault tolerance. WSN has received tremendous interests of various research communities, and significant progresses have been made in various aspects including sensor platform development, wireless communication and networking, application signal and information processing, as well as network performance evaluation and design. Such work has established good foundation for WSN research and development. The research and development of WSNs are stimulated by novel exciting applications. For example, WSNs, particularly the wireless body sensor network, make the old people/patient healthcare monitoring possible in smart home environment, where advanced signal processing algorithms are required to extract medical parameters like heart beat rate from raw sensor measurements such as ECG signal, estimation algorithms are required for occupant location and motion tracking, and machine learning algorithms are required for occupant activity recognition. The indoor environment (e.g., temperature and humidity) can be monitored by ambient wireless sensor network, and help design highly efficient distributed air-conditioning control system to improve the energy efficiency and enhance occupant comfort. Such WSN applications must address a number of key technological challenges induced by limited network resources such as node energy and network bandwidth. As a result, the application algorithms should be resource constrained and the network protocols should be application-driven. Advanced closed-loop system can be expected as an integrated system solution to link the application algorithms and the lower layer networking protocols by means of control theoretic or optimization approaches. To be scalable and reliable, such algorithms and protocols should also be distributed in nature via node local processing and collaboration with limited information exchange to achieve complex overall network goal. This special issue is a follow-up of the previous special issue on Networked Sensing, Decision Making and Control in Journal of Control Theory and Applications organized by Lihua Xie and Frank L. Lewis, which received warm responses. Different from that special issue, which mainly addresses the theoretic approaches for WSNs and networked control systems challenged by network uncertainties and limited resources, this special issue will be more focused on novel real WSN applications and application-driven research and development. Papers with real practices on platform development, network deployment, and system operational lessons or experience are particularly welcome. To facilitate humans in accessing and managing the explosively growing multimedia content, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to automatic multimedia analysis and processing in the last decades, such as categorization, annotation and indexing. However, despite great advances in recent years, several key difficulties still exist, the most important of which is the semantic gap in multimedia modeling. It is evident from recent results that most of the semantic gap problems cannot be solved automatically within the near future and without additional information or resources. On the other hand, we have witnessed the power of collective human efforts in the Web 2.0 era in providing high-quality tags and comments to large amounts of images and videos in sites such as Flickr and YouTube. In fact, a lot more can be accomplished through simple online games such as the ESP. Hence, more and more researchers believe that a possible approach to addressing the semantic gap problem is to incorporate the efforts of humans into the computational process, i.e., by combining human intelligence and automated computer processing to jointly tackle the problems in a collaborative manner. The past decade has witnessed the increase of such efforts, such as relevance feedback in content-based image retrieval, active learning in multimedia modeling, the interactive video search evaluation task in TRECVID, new search and browsing interfaces in VideoOlympics to facilitate humans’ interaction, and the recent human computation efforts such as the ESP game on Google image search website. This special issue aims to bring together the range of research efforts in interactive multimedia computing. The goals of this special issue are threefold: (1) to introduce novel research work and systems in this area; (2) to survey the progress of this direction in the past years; and (3) to discuss new technologies that will be potentially impactful (primary results are needed). [Apologies for multiple postings] 2nd International Workshop on Underwater Networks (WUnderNet 2010) http://www1.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/~hptan/WUnderNet2010 In conjunction with IEEE ICC Capetown, South Africa, May 2010. More than 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water. Despite having strong influences and impact on climate regulation, nutrient production, oil retrieval and transportation, the oceans remain the least explored frontiers of this planet and many oceanic and maritime applications seem relatively slow in exploiting the state-of-the-art info-communications technologies. The natural and man-made disasters that have taken place over the last few years have aroused significant interest in monitoring oceanic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, homeland security and military needs. The shipbuilding and offshore engineering industries are also increasingly interested in technologies like sensor networks as an economically viable alternative to currently adopted and costly methods used in seismic monitoring, structural health monitoring, installation and mooring, etc. The technology used in current remote telemetry and in-situ local sensing systems leaves much to be desired. Ideally, there should be highly precise, real-time, fine grained spatial sampling of the target environment, be it a physical structure like an oil rig, or the ocean bed in the vicinity of frequent seismic activities. Wireless terrestrial ad hoc and sensor networks have been studied extensively but the notion of a wireless underwater network is relatively new due to the lack of an efficient underwater communications technology. The existing viable underwater communications technology is acoustic communications, which is characterized by severely limited range-dependent bandwidth and attenuation, extensive time-varying multipath propagation, long propagation times, and high temporal errors. This is a drastic change from the radio channel used by terrestrial wireless sensor networks and presents new challenges for every aspect of the network protocol suite. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and industry experts in areas relevant to underwater networks. Different aspects of the protocol stack from the physical layer to the application layer, as well as cross-layer issues, will be represented. The objective is to serve as a forum for presenting state-of-the-art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Concepts such as dynamic spectrum access, convergence, unified network architectures and seamless service access in heterogeneous networks are gaining widespread popularity. Resource-Constrained Networks (RCNs) include a wide variety of networks in which resources – such as processing, communication, and energy – are limited. Examples of RCNs include ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobile networks, and pervasive systems. In RCNs, the tradeoff between data quality and resource usage (especially energy) is a major concern. In this case, Localized Algorithms and Information Fusion are particularly interesting for RCNs, since the development of efficient practical solutions and algorithms is possibly the most challenging task for such networks. On one hand, Localized Algorithms are special distributed algorithms in which only a subset of nodes partakes in the network tasks, such as data acquisition, processing, and communication. On the other hand, Information Fusion is often used for improving the quality of data being transmitted in these networks. Thus, Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion must deal with the challenge of working with partial views, or incomplete data, to provide accurate results at reduced cost. This special issue will cover a broad range of aspects of Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion in RCNs, including ad hoc and mobile networks, wireless sensor networks, networked pervasive systems. We seek technical papers describing original (previously unpublished in any form or forum) ideas, groundbreaking results, and quantified system experiences. We especially encourage submissions that highlight practical deployments of RCNs, new application domains, and critical surveys of the state-of-the-art. Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to: - In-network query processing and data storage; - Localized signal processing; - Localized estimation, reasoning, and inference; - Localized information fusion for time synchronization; - Localized information fusion for location discovery and location-based services; - Localized information fusion for reliability and fault tolerance; - Localized information fusion for communication protocols at all layers (MAC, scheduling, routing, transport, and application); - Quality-aware resource management using localized information fusion; - Mobility control and coordination; - Optimization techniques for localized information fusion in homogeneous and heterogeneous RCNs; - Localized information fusion for data compression and distributed source coding. Manuscripts must describe original, completed, and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal, magazine, or conference. The marriage of current wired-network-based social networks with mobile wireless networks triggers exciting new research areas. For instance, knowing the network features such as throughput and delay can help mobile social networks select a contact (e.g., a job advice centre) to which the network route has the best performance. This leads to the so-called wireless-aware social networks and the problem domain is within social networks. On the other hand, there is also social-aware or social inspired wireless network research where the knowledge of social network users is exploited for the benefit of wireless network design. Therefore, a cross-layer design that incorporates both the upper-layer mobile social networks and the lower-layer wireless networks is needed. And this comprises the thematic essence of this Special Issue. This cross-layer design method calls for a novel interdisciplinary research thinking that embraces not only these disciplines that are closely related to the field such as computer science, social science and network/communication engineering but also other subjects such as biology, physics, etc. The goal of this SI is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions that embark on the above interdisciplinary and cross-layer design methodologies to design and implement a better-performed mobile social network or wireless network. Triggered by FIND/GENI activities of the NSF both the EU in the 7th Framework as well as the German BMBF in its IT strategy for 2020 have addressed this topic. Although many discussions took place in such a research environment, the application of new ideas into test-beds and possibly industry shows an emerging demand today. These two combined workshops and their topics do cover the areas of technology, infrastructure, economic theory, and operations. Furthermore, methodological and architectural topics range from the incremental improvement of today's Internet to a complete new start (clean slate approach). The two main goals of the 4th GI/ITG Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme (KuVS) Workshop on Future Internet and the 2nd Workshop on Economic Traffic Management (supported by the FP6 NoE EMANICS and the FP7 STREP SmoothIT) are to give scientists, researchers, and operators the opportunity to present and discuss their ideas in these areas as well as strengthening the cooperation in the field of an economic-technology interplay.
