It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. However, we will consider any other original, interesting, and imaginative ideas and thoughts towards meeting this goal of a Personalized Network. * Architectural framework of personalized networks * Personalized Network Applications * Personal Communications in the next generation Internet * Personal Networks for rural areas * Context Awareness * Resource, service and context discovery * Self-organization and adaptation * Addressing and routing * Interworking between PANs, ad hoc networks, etc, and infrastructure-based heterogeneous networks * Mobility of personalized networks * Security, privacy and anonymity * Zero configuration methods and other enablers for ease-of-use * Dependability * Application-driven communication substrates * Personalized networks for group oriented networking * New QoS concepts in personalized networks * QoS across heterogeneous Networks and Devices * Mapping of functional requirements to physical devices and resources * Modeling and simulation of personalized networks * P2P paradigm in personalized networks * Innovative applications or prototypes and demonstrations of such person centric applications are equally valued Why should you participate in this workshop? Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Submissions of shorter versions of full papers that can be submitted to other conferences/journal in the near future are discouraged. Submission Instructions Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. Paper length should not exceed five-page technical paper manuscript. Papers should be submitted in a .pdf or .ps format to the EDAS paper submission website. A separate cover sheet should show the title of the paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the address (including e-mail, telephone, and fax) to which the correspondence should be sent. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. At least one author of accepted papers is required to register at the full registration rate. Both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications are used to implement a number of promising applications such as local hazard warning, efficient route planning and coordination of traffic flows. Even truly cooperative and, therefore, extremely challenging applications like cross traffic collision avoidance are being considered. In the last years a number of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) related projects and initiatives have been carried out (or will be completed soon). In Europe, for example, the European Commission initiated the eSafety Program to reduce the road fatalities by 50% before 2010 and to improve traffic efficiency. These R&D projects have created a solid technical basis for vehicular communications, and some of them have also performed some preliminary experiences, from what some important results have been obtained ("lessons learned"), as for example the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) in the US as well as several projects in Europe. All the aforementioned research efforts and initiatives can be considered as the 'phase 1' in the development of vehicular communications networks. This phase represents an initial and very important step towards the goals of improving road safety and traffic efficiency, and providing Internet services to the vehicles. Important achievements, architectural decisions and conclusions have been the outcome of this 'phase 1', such as the development of wireless physical and MAC protocols suited for the vehicular environment (e.g. IEEE 802.11p), new network architectures (some of them not based on classical TCP/IP), etc. We are now witnessing the 'phase 2' of research and development in vehicular communications networks, a new phase in which standardization and field trials will play a key role, as well as the refinement and extension of the network architectures and protocols defined in the 'phase 1'. Scope and Contributions The goal of this special issue is to share the research developments and efforts of this new phase ('phase 2') in the vehicular communications area. Paper submissions are invited on the following topics: * Overview of state-of-the-art for vehicular communication technologies and open challenges. * Network protocols for cooperative vehicular communications, such as geonetworking (geographical routing and addressing). * Networking aspects for use of 2G/3G cellular systems for vehicular communications. * New system architectures enabling the provision of safety, traffic efficiency and infotainment services in vehicular scenarios. * Security, location privacy and reliability issues. * Integration of IP protocols into the vehicular scenario. * Standardization for vehicular communications worldwide, interoperability and harmonization issues. * Field operational tests (FOTs) for cooperative systems employing vehicular communications networks. * Regulatory aspects. Submission Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the speciality of the article. Call for Papers Special Session: Advanced Technologies for Care at Home at IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference IEEE CCNC 2010 January 9 - 12, 2010, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.ieee-ccnc.org/2010 Due to a rapidly increasing ageing population, current care provision will become strained. A less costly and more practical solution will be to enable those requiring care to stay at home for longer. Those with long-term illness, physical or mental impairments may also prefer to remain in the care of friends and family. Assistive technology helps older people or those with impairments cope with normal life. Specialised technology is also being used to monitor situations such as someone becoming immobile or incapable. The aim is that, through use of sophisticated networking and management software, abnormal situations can be detected, acted upon and/or reported to a carer or a responder. This special session tries to bring together academics and commercial technology providers to explore current research issues with technologies for care at home. Topics of particular interest (but not limited to) include: • Integrated Home Care systems • Network Technologies for assistive technologies • User interfaces for care systems • Context aware health applications • Novel sensors, actuators, and augmented appliances for use in assistive systems • Mobile health applications • Experimental results and case studies on the use of technology for care at home All accepted submissions will be published in the proceedings of IEEE CCNC 2010. Submission Instructions Authors are invited to submit regular technical papers or position papers. The position papers should present novel technologies at an early stage of development or share future vision. All submissions should describe original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. The recent emergence of networked sensors as a result of rapid advances in sensor technologies and wireless networks, have set the stage for the realization of smart environments where unobtrusive sensors, either embedded or transportable by mobile carriers, enables fine-grain capture of environmental or ambient information that provides the basis of intelligence for higher-order cognitive systems, i.e. systems with capabilities to perceive, reason, learn, and react intelligently to their environment. Such systems in turn are envisioned to have wide ranging applications from intelligent wildlife and building structure monitoring to humanistic and social endevours such as health and elderly care service provisioning. Following the success of the first SeNAmI at PDCAT 2008 in Dunedin, New Zealand, this workshop once again aims to bring together researchers from academia and industry to present and discuss recent trends and advances in sensor networks and ambient intelligence, and from such engagement foster innovations towards technology maturity of sensor-based ambient intelligence systems. To address the special requirements of both safety and non-safety applications in the vehicle domain, there is a necessity to develop new communication technologies and find special integration solutions into vehicular and transportation systems. These result in various types of vehicular communications and networks: vehicle-toinfrastructure, vehicle-to-roadside, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. In this growing interdisciplinary field, many research challenges need to be addressed, e.g., how to characterize communication channels due to greater dynamics and higher requirements due to e.g. latency and reliability compared to conventional wireless channels, how to appropriately design medium access control (MAC) and network protocols that should essentially be scalable in performance and adaptable to environment changes due to rapid network topology changes and node density fluctuations, and how to evaluate and validate vehicular networking protocols under realistic assumptions using simulation methodologies and real-world testing. The goal of this special issue is to report on cutting-edge research achievements covering those aspects of vehicular communications and networks that are distinctively different from communication networks in general. We are seeking papers that describe high-quality, original, and unpublished contributions. Saeed, Ahmed A. Mabrouk, Amitava Mukherjee, Francisco Falcone and K. Daniel Wong Although WiMAX, LTE and WiFi all are provide wireless broadband connectivity, they have been optimized for different usage models: WiFi for very high-speed local area network connectivity and WiMAX, LTE for high-speed wireless cellular connectivity. By combining WiMAX, LTE and WiFi technologies, service providers can offer better usability of the networks infrastructure and support for seamless mobility and roaming. The unique similarities between WiMAX, LTE and WiFi networks that make the proposed synergy is promising is these technologies are fully packet switching uses IP-based technologies to provide connection services to the Internet. This standards- and IP-based network approach provides compelling benefits to service providers to collaborate between these technologies. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research in the area of WiMAX, WiBro, LTE and WiFi networking and the corresponding technical advances in the design and deployment of feasible network architectures and protocols and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in WiMAX/LTE and WiFi interworking. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Concepts such as dynamic spectrum access, convergence, unified network architectures and seamless service access in heterogeneous networks are gaining widespread popularity. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, IEEE 802.20, IEEE 802.22 and software defined radio are gaining popularity. Numerous attractive protocols have been proposed, which are expected to network places and devices that currently do not have the opportunity of "going online". Such environments reside at the edges of the current Internet infrastructure. For example, public and private transport vehicles, underwater, satellite and deep-space networks are potential DTN deployments of interest. Communication in the above-mentioned challenged environments is usually infrastructureless and consists mainly of mobile battery-powered devices. Moreover, mobility patterns are usually unknown, making connectivity periods between DTN-nodes intermittent and opportunistic. To achieve communication in such environments one has to deal with several performance tradeoffs, such as end-to-end delivery delay and energy consumption, or reliability and storage congestion. Since, in most cases, end-to-end connectivity does not exist (hence the difference from ad hoc networking) current Internet protocols fail permanently. Although there have already been a lot of research proposals for routing, (storage) congestion control, error control and application design for such networks, the IRTF has focused mainly on the Bundle Protocol (BP); BP is an application layer protocol that does not include the appropriate functionalities to deal with issues such as routing or storage congestion, for example. That said, DTN research and its future directions seem to lack a stable basis. For example, it is not clear yet if a "one-fits-all" protocol stack will be deployed, or if such an approach is feasible at all. In contrast, several different protocols that each would suit the needs of its specific architecture/setup would need to be able to interoperate. This workshop seeks novel ideas in the form of preliminary or work-in-progress results as well as mature research papers for Delay-/Disruption Tolerant Networks. We also encourage position papers that address and criticize the past, current and future trends of DTN research and are intended to trigger discussions on the whole spectrum of DTNs. But the Internet, as originally designed, may not have the capabilities to support the sheer number of new usage patterns and requirements. Around one billion people currently use the Internet and they will soon be joined by several billion mobile online devices. There will also be a shift from developed to developing countries. A fully pervasive anytime/anywhere and secure wireless Internet infrastructure will support and drive this trend. Therefore, the so called Future Internet (FI) needs to be able to match this growing demand and this will entail more than merely patching or upgrading the underlying network and service infrastructure. A profound change is required, leading to a range of technical, financial, society and governance challenges. There appears to be a common understanding that the FI will be at the heart of the future networked society. However, there is no agreed definition as to what a FI should cover in terms of research and non research topics. As well as being an Internet of Networks, FI is perceived of as being an Internet of Services and an Internet of Things that will integrate common objects into our lives. It is also regarding as being an Internet of Contents & Knowledge and an Internet of People. Developing the FI involves huge challenges regarding usability, reliability, mobility, scalability, interoperability, user acceptability, and trust and confidence. In addition, Internet governance, intellectual property, and education i.e. non-technical aspects - also need to be addressed. Early research work on FI focussed above all on networking issues, and on the need to support a range of innovative applications with enhanced management capabilities and a great capacity to deal with increased security issues. Alongside this, the FI is being driven by a vast set of new application requirements. This means that the FI should be approached in a holistic manner, beyond simply a "network" perspective. This special issue aims to intercept the strategies and trends related to the wireless segment of the development of the FI and to present new ideas and concepts in this area. These trends have a significant impact on the underlying network and service technologies and consequently drive research and technology requirements towards a Future Internet, hence continuing to shape future actions at a world level in a domain that has now become global. WANETs are based on the point-to-point networking concept, in which each node acts as wireless relay/router along the path between source and destination. This provides an essentially effective networking medium in infrastructure-less environments such as rural and desert areas. The nature of WANETs leads to several advantages in comparison with that of wireless cellular technologies. The relatively low cost and complexity of installation in infrastructure-less areas, the autonomous nodes, the self- healing and configuration capabilities, and several other properties enable WANETs for networking the most kinds of environment. Nevertheless, this nature also causes several technical issues and challenges for adopting WANETs in certain environments and/or for certain applications. The resources constrains due to channel sharing, the performance of current routing protocols and QoS mechanisms, the distributed coordination of network access, and many other issues and challenges represent essential topics for future enhancement of the current ad hoc technologies. Thus, beside the optimization of current WANET solutions the development of efficient solutions for those mentioned problems represents the main challenge for the Next Generation WANETs (NG-WANETs). In addition, using WANET based communication technologies in other fields such as for deep space communication networks could open new perspectives for accelerating the development and adoption of those technologies. Furthermore, bionic- inspired mechanisms and solutions can constructively help researchers to benefit from the nature experience to improve the current solutions and to develop new methods and concepts for solving critical technical problems. Consequently, new research fields could emerge which open new dimensions and creates new perspectives of WANETs for future applications and services. This workshop represents the first step to figure out these dimensions and perspectives of NG-WANETs and aims at providing a space for debate and knowledge sharing among researchers working on state-of-the-art solutions to the current issues and challenges of WANETs. It results that the philosophy of networking is currently reaching a new frontier, where the physical processes directly impact the logical information for the sake of pervasive and ubiquitous control of the surrounding environment. This objective can be achieved by means of massively networked embedded systems, also known as cyber-physical systems (CPS). The Wireless Sensor Network paradigm is known as the most prominent enabling technology for CPS. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has also been a pioneer technology in defining the new concept of Internet-of-Things. There is, as consequence, a tendency to change the concept of the Internet from a network a data to a network of physical objects. The objective of the the SensorNets 2009 School is to present a comprehensive state-of-the-art of the enabling technologies for the concept of Cyber-Physical Systems, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), RFID, wireless standard protocols, etc. The lectures of this school span the basic concepts as well as the latest achievement and the future challenges in the related research areas. To provide a specific example that relates to Internet access (connectivity), the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive in what concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between what is today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast, the Internet has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of network service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person communication, or information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also disruptive given that the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in order to accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth is the willingness to cooperate. Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the nature of the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators needs to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking spreads dynamically having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need to consider cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed based on topological information. Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that such novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely autonomic way and also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based upon his/her own mobility and social patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily imply the use of multihop technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases, simply relayed. The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers and a discussion panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a forum aiming to ignite a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or positively) that user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models. *Topics* U-NET'09 solicits high quality technical contributions within the context of user-provided networking. Events provide a natural abstraction of happenings in the real world. The concept of events has a long history in foundational sciences such as philosophy and linguistics. After first developing objects-based and entity-based approaches, computer science research is now addressing the concept of events and building many applications that consider events at least as important as objects. Consequently, we find many different solutions and approaches for modeling, detecting, and processing events. In addition, we find different applications that are based on events and make use of events. Conferences and workshops on events in computer science typically deal with the capturing, processing, and management of low-level events such as publish/ subscribe-approaches, middleware-based architectures, complex event processing, and event stream processing. Although this work is very essential for an efficient execution of the applications build on top of such approaches, the understanding of the concept of events is disconnected from the domain-level of events that the actual users of such applications have to deal with. However, considering multimedia data, its semantics is naturally closely tied to the event(s) it documents. The workshop focuses on how to detect, model, and process domain-level events and applications that make use of domain-level events in the context of multimedia data. We aim at bringing together researchers from the different fields that are interested in understanding the concept of events on domain-level. We invite original work in the areas of domain event modeling, detection of events from multimedia data, processing of events, organization of multimedia data using events as unifying mechanism, and applications of these techniques. The submissions should explicitly explain how they deal with the events of the considered domain and what kind of benefit is provided to the users by using events. Example application areas for events are multimedia-based experience sharing, lifelogs, emergency response, cultural heritage, news, surveillance, and others. The participants of the workshop will gain an insight into the current state-of-the-art of computer science research on domain-level events. They will get concrete examples of how events can be leveraged for human-centered research and how it can be detected, processed, modeled, and used for creating human- centered applications. They will also have the opportunity to discuss their approach with other researchers from the multimedia community in the hands-on part of the workshop. They shall be submitted in PDF format and not be longer than 8 pages. Papers will be submitted using the EDAS system of ACM Multimedia. In submitting a manuscript to this workshop, the authors acknowledge that no paper substantially similar in content has been submitted to another workshop, conference, or journal. All submitted papers will undergo a double-blind peer review process. At least three reviewers from the PC members and external reviewers will evaluate the originality, significance, clarity, soundness, relevance, and technical contents of the submitted manuscripts. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings together with the proceedings of the ACM Multimedia 2009 conference. Based on the quality of the manuscripts, selected papers will be invited to submit to a special issue of a top journal in the multimedia area (tbd).
