Besides structural alterations of the own home, ICT can provide significantly increase comfort, safety, health, and well-being at home. What is needed is assistance in the management of everyday activities in the home environment. Supporting persons in their own homes in their daily living in a seamless and helpful fashion is one of the big challenges of ambient assisted homes. The objective is to improve the quality of life in the golden age with new technologies. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and with it ambient assisted homes include methods, concepts, (electronic) systems, devices as well as services that are providing unobtrusive support for daily life based on context and the situation of the assisted person. For ambient assisted homes traditional means for user interface development as known from desktop computing is often not suitable as many other conditions have an influence on the design in this context. One essential need in ambient assisted homes is seamless interaction, which is integrated into the immediate personal environment of the user. Novel user interfaces need to react intelligently to the user's situation, interaction and goals in a coherent way. Focus of this workshop is the design of novel seamless user interfaces in ambient assisted homes. We invite researchers from different areas computer science, psychology, nursing care, gerontology, geriatrics, and rehabilitation medicine to submit original results in the design, development, and evaluation of seamless interaction methods but also relevant experience reports and case studies that will contribute to future ambient assisted homes. Scenarios addressed include support for the daily tasks in the personal household, monitoring and prevention in home-based rehabilitation sport, assessment of activity, social interaction, as well as prevention and detection of emergency situations. ====================================================================== TOPICS Topics of the workshop lie in the area of seamless interaction for ambient assisted homes. Ich möchte Sie auf das sechste Treffen des Fachgespräches Ortsbezogene Anwendungen und Dienste Do. 10. und Fr. 11. September 2009 an der Universität Bonn der GI-Fachgruppe "Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme" (KuVS) aufmerksam machen. Bitte notieren Sie sich jetzt schon diesen Termin. Ziel des Fachgespräches ist, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aber auch Vertretern der Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem intensiven Gedankenaustausch zu geben. ---------------------------------- Call for papers: 2nd International Workshop on Dependable Network Computing and Mobile Systems (DNCMS 2009) to be held in conjunction with SRDS 2009, Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A., Sept. 27, 2009 http://www.scs.ryerson.ca/iwoungan/DNCMS009/Call_for_Papers.html Due to the strong growth in mobile devices, networked embedded systems, wireless sensors,and the ever increasing information computing power offered by computing clusters and information services over stationary networks, the integration of network computing and mobile systems presents new challenges, especially with respect to the dependability of integrated applications: accepted measures of availability, costs, and quality of service for high-bandwidth, high-quality stationary systems, have to be re-thought, facing possibly new dependability paradigms for cheap, resource restricted, unreliable mobile systems with low-bandwidth communication facilities, being embedded and subject to the conditions in the physical world. This workshop solicits papers addressing dependability issues related to the design, analysis, and implementation, of infrastructures, systems, architectures, algorithms and protocols that deal with network computing and mobile/ubiquitous systems. Having the development of low-cost imaging sensors, CMOS cameras, sensitive microphones, PMSN have been proposed and drawn lots of attention from the research community. PMSN are a new and emerging type of sensor network that contains sensor nodes equipped with cameras, microphones, and other sensors producing multimedia content. These networks have the potential to enable a large class of applications ranging from assisting elderly in public spaces to border protection that benefit from the use of numerous sensor nodes that deliver multimedia content, e.g., multimedia surveillance networks, target tracking, environmental monitoring, and traffic management systems. PMSNs require effective harvesting and communication of event features in the form of multimedia such as audio, image, and video. Comparing with traditional wireless sensor networks, a lot of new challenges are faced by PMSNs, e.g., energy efficient multimedia processing and communication, heterogeneous multimedia reliability definitions, tight QoS expectations, and high bandwidth demands. This workshop is intended to provide a forum for presenting, exchanging and discussing the most recent advances in different aspects of pervasive multimedia sensor networks and applications. ICT control systems are used to continuously monitor the state of industrial processes and status of critical infrastructures. Over the last few years Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSAN) technology appeared as an ideal technological building block to improve the reliability and availability of ICTs in critical operational environments. On the other hand WSANs themselves become part of a critical infrastructures and processes. Whenever another layer of complexity is added to a system, this opens new possibilities for system failures, misuse or malicious attacks. The critical prerequisite for WSANs to be adopted in performance critical applications is their dependability, i.e. the ability of a system to deliver specified services to the user. It is, however, by far not trivial to make WSANs dependable for variety of applications in different operation environments and having different performance requirements. For DWSAN workshop we solicit original contributions aiming at achieving dependability of WSAN technology on different layers. Experiences from real-life deployment of dependable WSANs, application dependent WSAN design methodologies, dependable MAC, network and transport protocols, general issues of reliability, security in dependable WSANs are some of the key research topics to be discussed during the workshop. The goal of the workshop is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. 2nd International Workshop on the Network of the Future (FutureNet II) IEEE GLOBECOM 2009 Workshop December 4, 2009, Honolulu, Hawaii http://www.futureinter.net/ CALL FOR PAPERS Objectives In the past few years, there has been a renewed worldwide interest in future Internet architectures, leading to early-stage research programs such as NSF FIND/GENI in the US, FP7 in Europe and NWGN in Japan. The objective of these R&D programs is to evolve or re-architect the Internet protocol to improve security and usability, incorporate new optical and wireless technologies and better serve the next generation of content, mobile and pervasive network services. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (FutureNet) is a platform for both evolutionary and clean-slate approaches for redesign of the Internet. The event will uniquely bring together approaches driven by mobile and wireless requirements, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest The workshop invites contributions that report early results addressing research challenges on topics related to the network of the future. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. The convergence of existing and emerging technologies such as broadband, mobile, and broadcast networks is considered as a promising opportunity for existing providers to increase their service subscriber base, so that the 4G vision and beyond becomes a reality. An important research effort is undertaken by main actors to face the multidimensional, in terms of transport technology, session signaling, and QoS provisioning, heterogeneity of Next Generation Networks (NGNs). The efficient management of wireless and wired technologies side-by-side and of the number of multimedia services provisioned over these integrated networks is a key ingredient in the effort to provide cost effective, innovative, and mass-market solutions that are likely to become a major source of income for different stakeholders. The need to evolve management tools, solutions, platforms and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobile and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, quadruple play convergence, and the integration of embedded systems in different domains, from smart homes/cities to next generation automotive systems. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating converged multimedia networks and services. Inevitably, integrated management is a key element in addressing this challenge. The MMNS 2009 technical program committee is soliciting research papers in the broad area of network and service management that address new models, architectures, and technological designs to enable multimedia and mobility proliferation in NGNs. MMNS 2009 intends to continue the success of the outstanding agendas of the past, and will emphasize and solicit novel research in the management of wired-wireless multimedia networks and services. Late-breaking advances and work-in-progress reports from ongoing research are also encouraged for submission to MMNS 2009. Papers under review elsewhere MUST NOT be submitted to MMNS 2009. Authors are requested to submit either long papers or short papers (work-in-progress reports), strictly in LNCS format (see below): Long papers (up to 12 single-spaced single-column pages) Short papers describing work-in-progress (up to 6 single-spaced single-column pages) Submissions exceeding the above mentioned paper size will not be reviewed and will be returned to the authors. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM Multimedia 2009 - Technical Demonstrations ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Beijing Hotel, Beijing, China October 19-24, 2009 http://www.acmmm09.org ACM Multimedia Technical Demonstrations will show leading edge work in any area of multimedia technology and its applications. Submissions are particularly encouraged in the areas of haptics, smell, sensors, novel interface design, 3D multimedia and immersive technologies, wireless multimedia applications, multimedia-based security applications, digital rights management, multimedia databases, content analysis, content-based retrieval, multimedia search, multimedia storage, multimedia networking, media processing, entertainment, compression, hypermedia authoring, multimedia social networking, multimedia advertising and innovative applications. Each submission should consist of a 2 page paper (which will be included in the proceedings if accepted) and a presentation/video, which can be a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, a Macromedia Flash presentation, or an MPEG/WMV video clip (not more than 5 minutes long). Please zip all files into one, and add the EDAS number at the end of the file name before uploading it. The paper should be prepared in double-column ACM proceedings style as a PDF file. The two files should be packed into one using zip for upload, where each file is named using the assigned EDAS paper number. The submission should be registered and the zipped file uploaded through EDAS: http://edas.info/N7691 All submissions will be peer-reviewed to ensure quality. An award will be given for the best technical demonstration, as judged by an evaluation panel. Demonstrators will be provided with space and access to a local network (the demo should not rely on Internet access). The participants will be required to provide their own computing equipment and any additional network, display, haptic, sensor, etc., hardware needed for the demonstration.
