MobiCom 2009 will be held in September in Beijing. The MobiCom conference series serves as the premier international forum addressing networks, systems, algorithms, and applications that support mobile computers and wireless networks. MobiCom is a highly selective conference focusing on all issues in mobile computing and wireless and mobile networking at the link layer and above. Besides the regular conference program, MobiCom09 will also include a set of workshops and tutorials, panels, research demos and exhibits, and a poster session that includes the ACM Student Research Competition. PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research related to the theory and/or practice of mobile computing and/or wireless and mobile networking. All submissions must describe original research, not published or currently under review for another conference or journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: * Design, implementation, and evaluation of mobile systems and applications * Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking * Fundamental understanding of mobile computing and wireless networking * Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility, limited bandwidth, limited power and/or intermittent connectivity * Wireless and mobile techniques for delay-tolerant, mobile ad hoc, and wireless sensor networks * Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems * Wireless access technologies (e.g. mesh systems, personal area networks) * Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks * Protocols exploiting novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional antennas, and software radios * Techniques for dynamic spectrum use * Architectures, algorithms and protocols for cognitive wireless networks and their integration in the Internet * Modeling, simulation, emulation and measurement of mobile systems * Experimental test-beds for mobile/wireless networks * Performance evaluation of mobile and wireless networks, protocols, and systems * Next generation (beyond 802.11) wireless technologies and related systems and protocols MobiCom09 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the algorithm design. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. Wireless and mobile networks are being used in a wide variety of application contexts, such as sensor networks, pervasive computing, disruption tolerant networking, and vehicular networks. Papers that describe research and experimentation in such environments are encouraged, but the focus of such papers should be on addressing challenges associated with mobility and wireless networking. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These "challenges papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenges:" i.e., "Challenges: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF or PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), in font size no smaller than 10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches) with 1-inch margins. Detailed instructions on the paper submission procedure and format will be available on the conference web pages. The deadline for registering the title and the abstract of the paper with our electronic submission system is March 5, 2009 and the deadline for submitting the actual paper is March 12, 2009. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Human health can be broadly identified by two components: physical health and mental health. While there is no "official" definition for mental health (considering cultural differences and subjective assessments), physical health is typically attributed to health of various body organs including muscles, bones, and joints. Human performance can be considered as "focused behavior" or "purposeful work" and hence performance is typically domain specific such as sports performance, or performance of a physically challenged person. Recent advances in various technologies for medical sensors, computing, and wireless communication have resulted in monitoring, tracking, and quantifying the physical health. Providing ubiquitous health care and performance monitoring have thus become feasible, affordable, and in many cases indispensable. The proposed workshop will be multi-disciplinary, focusing on innovations in information processing and system aspects of health care and performance. Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing, and transport layer protocols. The aim of the conference is to create a forum in which researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists may work together in order to compare and debate different innovative solutions. V-Winets and V-ITS aim to ensure traffic safety for drivers, provide comfort for passengers and reduce transportation time and fuel consumption with many potential applications. For instance, vehicular safety applications include automatic collision notification, heavy fog detection and notification, remote diagnostics, emergency management, and other assistances for safe driving. Non-safety applications include real-time traffic congestion notification, location-based driver information services, high-speed tolling, vehicle tracking, automobile high speed Internet access, in-place traffic view, and many others. To facilitate these applications, many different types of communications and networking would be involved, including intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle (V-to-V), vehicle-to-roadside (V-to-R) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V-to-I) communications for V-Winet and V-ITS to provide timely information or Internet access to vehicles, drivers, and passengers. Consequently, V-Winet and V-ITS need to integrate existing networking technologies, such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11p, DSRC, 3G, IEEE 802.16, Bluetooth, Sensor networks, and ZigBee for easy, accurate, effective and simple communications among vehicles, users, and infrastructure networks. Workshop Announcement: WETICE2009 is announcing its workshops for participation in Gronigen, Netherlands, (June 29 - July 1st) www.WETICE.org It's first workshop in collaboration and cloud computing will focus on emerging excitement in Cloud Computing www.workshop.kawaobjects.com While current advances in cloud computing are commercially motivated and initiated by various service providers that different from conventional telecom or IP service providers, there is a body of experience from the academia, traditional telecommunications and IP service providers that can accelerate cloud deployment. We would like to solicit participation from not only current cloud computing pioneers but also challenge the academics and traditional computing and communications industry participants to bring their expertise and know-how to suggest innovative and open approach that can benefit cloud evolution. It is our belief that the telecommunication network and the Internet which are globally scalable and interoperable were made possible with collaboration from academics, industry and the creation of global standard bodies such as ITU and ITEF. Just as the telecommunication network connected billions of people to communicate with each other, and the Internet connected millions of computers, PCs and mobile devices to exchange multimedia content, the next generation clouds will enable social networks allowing hundreds of thousands of developers to create millions of services to reach billion of users. For the clouds to be interoperable and globally scalable, new innovation is necessary that brings new distributed computing models that are network centric and incorporates FCAPS management. Many lessons learned in many disciplines need to be brought together to accelerate the cloud evolution with open, vendor independent and technology agnostic collaboration frameworks. This workshop will sow the seed for the collaboration required. Papers reporting original work, work-in-progress, doctoral research proposals, descriptions of systems, and review papers are solicited from the academia, and the computer and telecommunication industries. All papers will be refereed by at least two experts in the area. In general DTN architecture can be defined by one or more of the following characteristics: (a) sparse connectivity (i. e., end-to-end route between source and destination may not even exist); (b) long or variable delay; (c) asymmetric data rate; and (d) high error rate. Such characteristics can be results of various factors, including sever power fluctuations, wireless range, network partitioning, catastrophic disasters, or malicious attacks. Consequently, applications of DTNs are highly diverse and can be expanded to a wide variety of areas. Examples of such areas are interplanetary networks for deep space communications, sensor networks for ecological monitoring, transient networks to benefit developing communities, ad hoc networks to disseminate information in tactical or roadway environments, and disaster recovery networks to restore communications following a natural disaster. Diversity of network environments and inherent uncertainty about network conditions make design of DTNs highly challenging in terms of architecture, protocol designs, interoperability, security, management, and stability. We hope this special issue can address some of these issues and further stimulate activity in the research community. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the- art research contributions that address the various aspects of delay/disruption tolerant communications, networks, architecture, and applications. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANET. These include consortia like Vehicle Safety Consortium (US), Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (Europe), and Advanced Safety Vehicle Program (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p (WAVE), and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to the theory or practice of vehicular inter-networking (VANET). All submissions must describe original research, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. Call For Papers -- PRESTO 2009 -- The Second ACM SIGCOMM Workshop on Programmable Routers for Extensible Services of TOmorrow August 22nd 2009 Co-located with ACM SIGCOMM 2009 in Barcelona, Spain. http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2009/workshops/presto/ There continues to be great interest in the networking research community in re-architecting the distribution of functions in IP networks. These efforts can be described as a dis-aggregation of router and switch functionality into various components and well-defined interfaces, towards the goal of deploying richer services and easing management of the network. Efforts in this space span the range from more sophisticated configuration interfaces, to open application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow specialized control and data plane functions on commercial routers, to open software, open firmware, and open hardware platforms that enable tremendous flexibility in the functionality of network equipment. While these open interfaces continue to evolve, many have reached a level of maturity that allow practitioners to create holistic network centric functions and services by leveraging the available low level per-device mechanisms. Indeed, programmable network elements hold the promise of accelerating innovation and service deployment. At the same time, programmability could exacerbate already challenging network management tasks. As with previous PRESTO workshops, this session will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between researchers and industry practitioners, with a goal of driving service innovation in IP networks using novel extensible router and switch architectures. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: - Abstractions for programmable network elements. (Do we need programmability? How close to the "metal" should programmability be? E.g., configuration interfaces versus open APIs versus completely open platforms. Programming languages for programmable network elements.) - Architectures for open/programmable network elements, including transport, wireless and packet forwarding devices. - Efficient and flexible data plane programmability. (E.g., firmware versus multi-core platforms.) - Cross-layer aware programmability. - Network element virtualization and the interaction between programmability and virtualization. - Network composition, configuration and provisioning in virtualized environments. - Architectures, services and/or service features enabled by programmability. - The impact of programmability on network management and operations. Submission instructions The workshop solicits original papers on completed work, position papers, and/or work-in-progress papers on the challenges raised above. Papers that bring out new and interesting approaches at an early stage of their development are very welcome, as are papers that describe industry efforts related to the CFP. Submissions must be no greater than 6 pages in length, must be a PDF file and must follow the formatting guidelines at http://www.sigcomm.org/sigcomm2009/. Submissions that deviate from these guidelines will be rejected without consideration. Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their papers at the workshop. Submissions must be original work not under review at any other workshop, conference, or journal. Call for Papers 21st International Teletraffic Congress (ITC 21) "Traffic and Performance Issues in Networks of the Future" 15-17 September 2009 - Paris, France http://www.i-teletraffic.org/itc21 TOPIC ITC brings together researchers interested in understanding and improving the way traffic is handled in communication networks. Under the impulsion of proliferating broadband applications and the continuous progress of technological advances, we currently witness a rapid evolution of these networks and the emergence of new usage models. They call for a continuous reappraisal of traffic management procedures and mechanisms. In parallel with the requirement to improve network efficiency and performance by incremental steps, there is currently considerable activity worldwide on the design of new architecture principles and concepts for future networks. How will technological innovations and content-centric networking impact our ability to control traffic flow? What architectural elements and business models are needed to finally meet user expectations for quality and security of their communications in a cost-effective way? Such traffic and performance issues related to the networks of the future are the focus of ITC 21, the next ITC plenary congress that will take place in Paris in September 2009. ITC 21 solicits submission of papers with original contributions relating to traffic and performance issues in computer networks and communication systems. It has been argued that one of the key characteristics of sensor networks is that they are so tightly coupled with the applications running on top of them. Although WSNs have been an active area of research for over a decade, real world sensor network deployments have not yet found their way to widespread adoption. The experience gained and lessons learned during the initial attempts to deploy WSNs and implement various sensor network applications are very valuable for the advancement of this technology. The 1st ICST International Conference on Sensor Networks Applications, Experimentation and Logistics (SENSAPPEAL 2009) aims at bringing together researchers and developers from academia and industry to present their work and share their experiences with developing, deploying and testing WSN applications. Moreover key enablers to WSN application development (such as OS, middleware, in-field reprogramming, testbeds and simulators, etc.) fall within the scope of the conference. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 20 camera-ready pages in the Springer "Lecture Notes of the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social-Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (LNICST)" format. We also welcome submissions for demonstrations of pilot, experimental or real-life deployments, testbeds, simulators and applications of wireless sensor networks.
