The essence of digital ecosystems is creating value by making connections through collective intelligence. Digital Ecosystems promote collaboration instead of unbridled competition and ICT based catalyst effect in a number of domains to produce networked enriched communities. Digital Ecosystems are empowered by the cyber engineering and human space computing. Cyber engineering studies the digital horizon in our ecosystems, also known as Cloud computing. It encompasses the semantic web, ontologies, cyber security, privacy, trust and risk management, social networks, web 2.0, 3.0, convergence technologies, web services and grid technologies. Human space computing is about the study of the technology (Bluetooth, WiFi, IRDA, RFID, GSM, GPRS, 3G Digital Pens, PDAs, Mobile Phones , VoIP, Video, Voice, Data, other devices) for improvement of our human lives, not just organisations, businesses or government. It studies the world we live in, and personal space computing, our space, between the digital skyline and our ecosystems. Prospective participants are invited to electronically submit a full paper (6 pages, about 4500 words, pdf or WinWord file) of their original work following the IEEE instructions available on this website. Each paper will undergo a rigorous peer reviewed process involving at least two reviewers. The main conference theme is to strengthen ICT to support different digital ecosystems, especially focusing on cyber engineering and human space computing. It is the study of triangle relationship between industries, human endeavours and advanced ICT. In general DTN architecture can be defined by one or more of the following characteristics: (a) sparse connectivity (i. e., end-to-end route between source and destination may not even exist); (b) long or variable delay; (c) asymmetric data rate; and (d) high error rate. Such characteristics can be results of various factors, including sever power fluctuations, wireless range, network partitioning, catastrophic disasters, or malicious attacks. Consequently, applications of DTNs are highly diverse and can be expanded to a wide variety of areas. Examples of such areas are interplanetary networks for deep space communications, sensor networks for ecological monitoring, transient networks to benefit developing communities, ad hoc networks to disseminate information in tactical or roadway environments, and disaster recovery networks to restore communications following a natural disaster. Diversity of network environments and inherent uncertainty about network conditions make design of DTNs highly challenging in terms of architecture, protocol designs, interoperability, security, management, and stability. We hope this special issue can address some of these issues and further stimulate activity in the research community. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the- art research contributions that address the various aspects of delay/disruption tolerant communications, networks, architecture, and applications. Facing these challenges is a community-spanning effort that requires pooling the resources and experiences of both the virtual reality and the networking/ distributed computing communities. This workshop hopes to provide a link between these communities to foster the development of highly distributed, flexible and robust virtual environments. We aim to gather both practitioners and researchers under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The main topic of this workshop is to provide a critical analysis of existing distribution approaches for virtual environments and to identify key challenges and techniques that are required for bringing VR systems into the global Internet, interconnecting thousands of users in a single environment. More specifically, the workshop addresses the following issues: 1. Scalability, i.e. the ability to handle thousands of (possibly nearby) users at the same time, interacting via the global Internet. 2. Interoperability, i.e. the ability to integrate multiple virtual worlds and/or service providers, e.g. using common protocols or universal clients. 3. Interactivity, i.e. how to provide highly responsive environments with near real time interactions despite network delay and jitter. 4. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, e.g. the integration of mobile devices for nomadic augmented reality applications. 5. Dynamic & flexible distribution architectures, e.g. self-adapting client/server, peer-to-peer and hybrid architectures. 6. Content streaming, e.g. sound and 3D streaming. 7. Consistency, i.e. providing consistency guarantees to users of the virtual environment, despite network delay and the high level of responsiveness required. 8. Persistency, i.e. the ability to save and access the states of the virtual environments despite disconnections and faulty components. 9. Security & privacy, e.g. distributed authentication algorithms that allow users to participate in the environment securely and without fear of being spied. 10. Implementation issues, e.g. novel approaches to effectively manage the complexity of developing applications for such environments. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely- related one. The features may be functions, services, concerns or aspects. Even if each individual feature works as intended, using multiple features together may cause unexpected (and often undesirable) behaviors, due to the feature interactions. The feature interaction problem was first studied in the domain of telecommunications systems. However, the phenomenon can occur in any software system that is subject to evolution, because the features of the new version of the system can interact with the features of the old system in an undesired way. At one end of the performance spectrum, the Internet protocols provide communication facilities for extremely-high-speed special-use networks. At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Internet contains very low-power and low-bandwidth networks that cater to infrequent, bursty communication. Enabling efficient and high- performance end-to-end communication across such a diverse internetwork is a difficult problem, which is not solved by current transport layer protocols. The need to support an application base that grows more and more dissimilar adds additional challenges. The 7th International Workshop on Protocols for Future, Large-Scale & Diverse Network Transports (PFLDNeT)brings together researchers and practitioners from all continents to exchange their ideas and experiences in the area of transport layer issues for modern communication networks. The workshop provides theorists, experimentalists and technologists with a focused, highly interactive opportunity to present, discuss and exchange experience on leading research, development and future directions in transport and application protocols for networks that are increasingly growing in size, heterogeneity and dynamicity of interaction. PFLDNeT 2009 solicits papers that further the research on end-to-end communication protocols for todays and tomorrows Internet in all its diversity along the continuum from specialized grid networks, optical transports, wireless connections, to lossy and low-power networks. A specific focus of the workshop lies on transport protocols for the efficient end-to-end transfer of data for a diverse set of applications and application-layer protocols. Now approaching its seventh instantiation, the PFLDneT workshop has broadened its focus over the years from protocols targeted at specific fast, long-distance networks (the original expansion of the PFLDneT acronym) into a venue where all kinds of new ideas relating to end-to-end transport protocols for diverse network scenarios are being discussed first. Introduction Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) arises primarily as a result of various forms of host and router mobility, but may also come into being as a result of disconnection due to power management or interference. Examples of such networks include: * Terrestrial Mobile Networks: In many cases, these networks may become un-expectedly partitioned due to node mobility or RF interference. In other cases, the network may never have an end to end path and may be expected to be partitioned in a periodic and predictable manner. * Exotic Media Networks: Exotic communication media includes near-Earth satel-lite communications, very long-distance radio links (e.g. deep space RF communications with light propagation delays in the seconds or minutes), communication using acoustic modulation in air or water, and some free-space optical communications. These systems may be subject to high latencies with predictable interruption (e.g. due to planetary dy-namics or the passing of a scheduled ship), may suffer outage due to environmental conditions (e.g. weather), or may provide a predictably available store-and-forward network service that is only occasionally available (e.g. low-earth orbiting satellites that "pass" by one or more times each day). * Ad-Hoc and Sensor Networks: These networks are frequently characterized by extremely limited end-node power, memory, and CPU capability. The focus of ACNM is on intelligent communication, network control and management paradigms based on smart network and service elements that are capable to automatically configure and organize themselves. Autonomic networks will be able to sense their environment to perceive these changes, to understand the meaning of these changes, and to react in an intelligent manner through adaptation. This facilitates new ways to perform network control, management, service creation, etc. Autonomic networking naturally also applies to mission critical distributed systems, since autonomic behavior allows for immediate reaction to changes in the networking environment or context, and correction of any (predicted) problems. Yet, issues like efficient mobility management and optimization, locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security, wireless access and related operational/deployment concerns are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet architecture, its end-to-end principles, and business models will require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet. For instance, an appropriate system that allows communicating with a mobile host requires addressing several fundamental issues with the Internet architecture, such as ability to locate the mobile host/service, preserving ongoing communications upon changes of locations, as well as efficient and secure handover management. As another example, the emerging wireless technologies may pose additional challenges to the Internet architecture since they introduce design principles different from the original Internet. MobiArch 2009 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and practitioners, in exploration of recent advances in architectures, protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on various mobility issues over the Internet, with an emphasis on wireless infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile network performance evaluation and modelling, multi-homing, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations. Furthermore, the potential of usability of mobility services for connecting people and devices in developing regions of the world into the Internet infrastructure will be also explored. Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CfP CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) BIO-INSPIRED NETWORKING Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of massively networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro- and nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally distributed and unsupervised way. Recently, a number of approaches inspired by biological mechanisms and phenomena have been proposed as a strategy to handle the complexity of massively distributed systems such as the Internet, or wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The goal of bio-inspired approaches is to discover and to adapt biological methods to technical solutions that are showing similarly high stability, adaptability, and scalability as biological entities often have. This special issue intends to highlight the latest achievements in the new research domain of bio-inspired networking. In particular, the issue focuses on methodologies for identifying relevant biological mechanisms, the modeling of these mechanisms, and their application to technical solutions. Prospective articles are expected to outline either proof of concept studies with direct comparison to classical technical solutions, or theoretical mathematical models of biological principles associated with fundamental challenges in communication systems. For this special issue, we consider all techniques with direct biological background including animal learning strategies, self-organizing methods as observed from swarms down to nano-structures that are observed and analyzed in molecular biology. Classical complex systems research is explicitly excluded from the scope whereas a comparison to well-known techniques in this domain is appreciated. This special issue is dedicated to bio-inspired approaches addressing various aspects of networking and communication systems. Vehicles can be seen as a mobile communication infrastructure with strong dynamics w.r.t. network topology and changing communication channel conditions. The applications are manifold ranging from comfort services, e.g. traffic information systems, to safety applications, e.g. emergency warnings. Until now, the development of protocols was primarily inspired by existing Internet solutions and the advances in mobile ad hoc networking. However, the specific characteristics of vehicular networks may require quite different communication paradigms. For example, the nodes usually do not have severe power and form factor constraints, and they might be always on. On the other hand, wireless connections may not be stable for a longer time period and the network density is expected to vary from sparse to very dense networks. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for novel solutions and services looking into V2V and V2I communication issues focusing on environmental aspects such as optimized CO2 emission, and road traffic shaping, i.e. optimized usage of available routes for all vehicles. Furthermore, con-cerning the drivers or users of vehicles, the service aspect is especially challenging in public trans-portation and for fleet management. The workshop will highlight the latest achievements in the research area of vehicular communication, with the goal of bringing together the different research communities. We especially target protocols and solutions besides simple "802.11+MANET" based solutions and explicitly encourage submission of scientifically sound experimental work. Authors are required to center their work around the environmental and social impacts of IVC and clearly state in the abstract how one or more of these issues are addressed in the paper. We are looking for both technical and position papers presenting new applications for IVC that we have not seen so far, and new ways to exploit existing communication techniques for more efficient IVC. Throughout the world, many national or international projects in government, industry, and academia have been devoted to the establishment of ambitious research programs, such as the European eSafety initiative, the German Ministry of Education and Research sponsored Wheels project, the US programs derived from the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative, and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS programs. The field of wireless vehicular communications can be typically identified as vehicle-to-person communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and vehicular communication networks. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. In order for universal realization of wireless vehicular communications, many research challenges still need to be addressed to create good-performance, highly scalable, robust and secure vehicular technologies. ------------------ Topics ------------------ The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances and surrey the-state-of-the-art in this fast developing field.
