More and More fields in research and industry discover the great possibilities Serious Games provide for various subjects as employee training, education, sports, medical science, fire brigade, tourism, society, aviation, military training etc. Although Serious Games is circulating in broad and heterogeneous fields it has not reached the multimedia community yet. The aim of this workshop should be the initiation of a Serious Game forum within multimedia. The concept of Serious Games offer immense opportunity to change education and game area but there is still a lot of room for improvement in gameplay, user experience, communication of learning content. We will assemble all disciplines in Multimedia to discuss how multimedia can be enrichment for Serious Games – which prospects provide Multimedia in connection with Serious Games. We will converse questions such as how alternate input and out devices are able to improve the gameplay, how innovations in communications of Multiplayer games can increase learning success and user experience, do game engines have the power to ease the production of Serious Games, how can augmented and virtual reality effect gameplay and user experience,… TARGET AUDIENCE ------------------ The target audience is researchers and practitioners in the field of Computer/Serious Games and its related areas. CALL FOR PAPERS The Sixth Workshop on Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks WWASN 2009 - in conjunction with The International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2009), June 22-26, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada This workshop covers the area of ad hoc networking, from physical issues up to application aspects. In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The workshop will also address the rapidly growing field of sensor networks, including the issues related to their topology, routing, performance, data gathering and filtering, energy efficiency, and mobility. Increasing number of people interact through media and less in a face-to-face manner. Elderly tend to get lonely when socializing becomes more difficult because of their age. Children spend an increasing amount of time behind their computer playing games on their own and adults also tend to live a less active life. Due to various reasons the number of people with social impairments (autism spectrum disorders) has noticeably grown during the last decades. Another related trend is that people lead less active lifestyles. At the same time, new technologies provide novel entertainment and interaction opportunities. Paper should explore the opportunities that technology-driven physical play offers for enhancing and stimulating face-to-face social interaction (as opposed to virtual interaction through a computer). This can be beneficial for diverse reasons: For children to counter the trend of playing computer games and watching television on their own, for elderly to socialize more when making new contacts becomes more difficult and for autistic children because they particularly like technological toys. The main goal of the special issue is to share information and experiences among researchers in the area of social interaction through physical play. We invite papers addressing social and physical issues including (but not restricted to) the following fields: - Social robotics - Design for diverse user groups, such as children and elderly - Social games - Creative toolkits - Exertion interfaces - Pervasive and head-up games - Embodied facilitation - Spatial and tangible interaction It is expected that the special issue will include some articles extended from papers that were presented at the 2008 Fun and Games workshop on Design for social interaction through physical play (http://www.idemployee.id.tue.nl/m.m.bekker/WorkshopSPG.htm), but other original articles are also welcome. Held in conjunction with the IEEE 6th International Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-09) Brisbane, Australia, 7 - 10 July, 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- AIM & SCOPE Services are the dominant type of economic activity in industrialized economies. The term Internet of Services relates to the representation and (partial) execution of services - in the economic sense - in the Internet. Many issues around the mapping between economic services and services in the IT sense are still unresolved. Additionally, only a small fraction of services are entirely dematerialized; the vast majority of services ultimately relate to things in the real world: to the Internet of Things. The Ubiquitous Computing community has already made considerable advances in closing the information gap between services and things. One well-known example is the use of RFID tags in logistics. Yet this is only the beginning, there still exists a largely untapped source of innovation at the junction of services and things. This workshop is about bringing together industry and academia to explore how advances in ubiquitous computing techniques can help improve existing economic services and create opportunities for new services. We are also interested in how services can add value to smart things. This is a forum for industry to learn about recent advances in both services and Ubicomp and also for researchers to learn about the problems faced by industry that may spark new research questions and the next wave of Ubicomp applications. We solicit a) technical papers with a proven original scientific contribution and b) systematic, well-founded experience reports and requirements / demands analyses. Core IT papers and papers at the boundary of technology and business or humanities are also invited. We also welcome contributions that address solely the topic of services, independently of ubiquitous computing, since we believe this also contributes to cross-fertilization of ideas in the context of UIC-09. With the recent advances in hardware design and wireless communications, the evolution of new generations of embedded wireless devices, which facilitates reliable, comprehensive, and high-standard healthcare, has attracted intensive attention from both industries and academic institutes. Particularly, developments in wireless infrastructure, such as body-area networks or pervasive health-monitoring system, have proved beneficial to deliver telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. However, there still exist many challenges to overcome before the real marketing stage due to requirements for reliable signal propagation characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, robust data and image transmission, and the great need for safe, secure, and dependable operation. In addition, cost issue is another key concern for worldwide utilization of wireless devices for pervasive healthcare. The aim of the workshop is to bring together both the industry and academia to present and discuss the problems, challenges, directions, and state-of-art in the fields of wireless access for pervasive healthcare. The workshop will try to build a bridge between the industry and academic research so that future collaborations between two sectors can be identified. It has been argued that one of the key characteristics of sensor networks is that they are so tightly coupled with the applications running on top of them. Although WSNs have been an active area of research for over a decade, real world sensor network deployments have not yet found their way to widespread adoption. The experience gained and lessons learned during the initial attempts to deploy WSNs and implement various sensor network applications are very valuable for the advancement of this technology. The 1st ICST International Conference on Sensor Networks Applications, Experimentation and Logistics (SENSAPPEAL 2009) aims at bringing together researchers and developers from academia and industry to present their work and share their experiences with developing, deploying and testing WSN applications. Moreover key enablers to WSN application development (such as OS, middleware, in-field reprogramming, testbeds and simulators, etc.) fall within the scope of the conference. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 20 camera-ready pages in the Springer “Lecture Notes of the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social-Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (LNICST)” format. Different from conventional point-to-point communications, cooperative communications and networking allows different users or nodes in a wireless network to share resources to create collaboration through distributed transmission/processing, in which each user's information is sent out not only by the user, but also by collaborating users. Cooperative communications and networking is a new communication paradigm promising significant capacity and multiplexing gain increase in wireless networks. It realizes a new form of space diversity to combat the effects of severe fading that has been termed cooperative diversity, and it is also helpful in reducing complexity of routing problems and realizing seamless networking, Although some initial understanding of cooperative communication schemes has been demonstrated in recent years, many more problems related to developing practical and effective cooperative communication systems have emerged or remain open. Cognitive radio has emerged as a promising technology for optimizing utilization of radio bandwidth in the next generation wireless communications systems and networks. This will enable us to cope with the increasing spectrum demand for wireless services as well as create new wireless applications and services. Recently, we have witnessed a flurry of research in dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio. Development of cognitive radio technology has to deal with technical and practical considerations as well as regulatory requirements, and therefore, there is an increasing interest in this technology among the researchers and the spectrum policy makers. The workshop will focus on the research challenges associated with the design, implementation, and application of cognitive and spectrum agile wireless networks. Call for papers Authors are invited to submit papers for presentation at the workshop. Papers (no more than 6 camera‐ready pages, 10 pt font in IEEE transactions format) should present novel perspectives within the general scope of the workshop (see below). Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere can be submitted. Papers in excess of page limits shall not be considered for review or publication. All papers must include title, complete contact information for all authors, abstract, and keywords on the over page. The corresponding author must be clearly identified. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad-hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger font, single-spaced). PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHING Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and their comments will be provided to the authors. If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one of its authors registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the early registration deadline. As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will be indexed through INSPEC, the leading English-language bibliographic information service for scientific and technical literature. ICDCS proceedings will also be submitted for indexing to EI's Engineering Information Index, Compendex, ISI Thomson's Scientific and Technical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and Current Contents on Diskette (ISI Thomson). We plan a special issue of an international journal with extended versions of the selected SAHNS papers. 4. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The workshop will also address the rapidly growing field of sensor networks, including the issues related to their topology, routing, performance, data gathering and filtering, energy efficiency, and mobility. A total of 60 papers from 17 different countries had been submitted to the workshop. A total of 32 papers were selected for presentation. Approximately half of the papers were dealing with wireless ad hoc networks, which is why subsequent workshops were focusing specifically on wireless ad hoc networks. WWAN2004 <http://www.lifl.fr/RD2P/WWAN2004> was held during ICDCS-2004 (Tokyo, Japan); it was organized by David Simplot-Ryl and Ivan Stojmenovic. In response to the Call for Papers, 42 papers from 20 different countries had been submitted, 21 of which were selected for presentation at WWAN 2004. With several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio, multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the physical layer. At the same time detailed digital models of buildings, towns, or even the globe become widely available. Integrating the huge amount of available sensor data into spatial models results in highly dynamic models of the real world, often called context models. A wide range of applications can substantially benefit from common context models. However, context data is inherently associated with uncertainty, which has to be taken into account by both context management systems and applications. Appropriate ontologies, models, and metrics are needed to specify the quality of context data, including aspects of degradation, consistency, and trust. Those concepts are needed on different levels of abstraction, including the raw sensor data, observable context, as well as the high-level context derived from other context information by means of reasoning techniques. In addition, methods and calculi are required to assess the quality of context data on various levels. For an integrated context-management approach a framework is needed that defines the appropriate abstraction levels and that provides quality mappings between these layers. Other important issues are application-specific quality concepts and methods to handle uncertain context data. If context data is to be presented to human users, appropriate visualizing techniques are required to present the data together with its quality assessments. On the other hand, if applications specify what level of degradation they accept, this information can be used to optimize context management by means of suitable relaxation techniques. Research in context management and in particular context quality requires an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, the QuaCon Workshop aims to bring together researchers from various fields to discuss approaches to context quality and to make a consolidated contribution towards an integrated way of treating context quality. Topics covered by the workshop include the following: - Models for degradation and consistency of context data - Degradation, spatial ontologies and spatial data mining - Trust in context data - Methods and calculi for context quality assessment - Frameworks and metrics for context quality - Uncertainty in sensor data processing - Quality-aware algorithms for context management - Quality-aware event and stream processing - Uncertainty in reasoning on context data - Application-specific context quality and case studies - Visualization of context quality Submitted papers must not have been previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed by the program committee, and accepted papers will be published in the post-workshop proceedings in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series. All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF) version of their full paper. Whilst having the ability to provide data with unparalleled temporal and spatial resolution, geosensor networks have pushed the frontiers of traditional GIS research into the realms of computer science, introducing issues such as data fusion, geolocated queries, energy efficient data collection and data mining and interpretation. The incorporation of mobile devices into these networks allows data acquisition to be undertaken on a spatially varying sampling resolution, introducing new research avenues such as co-operative sensing and dynamic coverage. Furthermore, geosensor networks are not only constrained to passively monitor a region, through actuators, they also have the ability to influence or modify their environment. Research in geosensor networks spans multiple fields, ranging from strategies for intelligent data acquisition to virtual reality interactions with environmental dynamics. Of particular interest are applications of geosensor networks, such as environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, early warning systems and wildlife tracking. This workshop seeks to address these issues, by bringing together leading experts in a two day forum to present novel research and exchange ideas relating to the state of the art and its future directions. Real world results are particularly welcomed, as are reports of interesting or challenging deployments.
