Wireless sensor networks are aggregates of sensor nodes into sophisticated sensing, computational and communication infrastructures. These new networks are having a significant impact (and promises to have even more) on a wide array of applications ranging from military, to scientific, to industrial, to health-care, to domestic, establishing ubiquitous computing that will pervade society and redefine the way in which we live and work. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks are solicited. Papers describing prototype and experimental implementations and deployment of sensor networks and systems are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Sensor-based systems and applications - Operating systems - Middleware and software tools - Networking architectures and protocols - Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination - Topology control - Power management and energy-efficient design - Time synchronization - Location management - Sensor networks with mobile elements - Cross-layer architectures - Intelligent sensor nodes - Security and dependability issues - Modelling and performance evaluation - Measurements PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and not be previously published, or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts must be limited to 6 pages in IEEE 8.5x11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines (ftp://pubftp.computer.org/Press/Outgoing/proceedings/INSTRUCT.HTM). All submissions will be handled via EDAS. Accepted papers will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined PerCom 2009 workshops proceedings. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong and Oslo. UIC-09 will include a highly selective program of technical papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches. The goal of this special issue is to explore the development of wireless vehicular ad hoc network technologies about communication, networking, and applications. A good communication protocol design can achieve highly reliable, highly scalable, and high performance. In aspect of networking, there are many challenges that how to offer quality of service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management, and create secure vehicular ad hoc networks. VANET safety applications include safety warnings and collision avoidance. This is imperious to improve the non-safety applications and reduce the occurrence of collision. VANETs present a highly active field of research, development, standardization and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national/international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US), C2CCC (Europe) and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p (WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2009 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. Submitted papers for this special issue are expected to focus on cross-layer design related to future generation wireless networks and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future generation wireless networks. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. The Second International Workshop on Applications of Ad hoc and Sensor Networks (AASNET '09) (http://faculty.kfupm.edu.sa/coe/tarek/aasnet09.htm) is held in conjunction with AINA 2009 23nd IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications in Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009. Wireless mobile ad hoc and sensor network nodes have limited battery capacity. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. - Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message ----------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers for Special Issue on Service-Oriented Broadband Wireless Network Architecture IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine In the past few years, broadband wireless networks have been very attractive for providing broadband access because of quick and cost-effective deployments. In addition to the features of high data rate and large coverage, broadband wireless networks also promise to rapidly provide broadband access to locations in the world's rural and developing areas where broadband is currently unavailable, as well as competing for urban market shares. Till now, most existing efforts have been focused the basic "access" capability. However, to successfully deploy and operate broadband wireless networks, a crucial issue must be addressed: "How to support a variety of services and applications within the broadband wireless networks?" For instance, there is an increasing need to efficiently support applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), video streaming, music downloading, IP TV and many others. Apparently, existing "access-oriented" design may not be the good answer because of the following reasons. (1) Efficiency: Existing design may not be able to fully exploit the potential of wireless networks because a customer always needs to connect to an access point, which is very likely a bottleneck. (2) Quality of service: For many existing designs that are developed to gain Internet access, the customer may not be able to obtain the desired quality-of-service (QoS) because all services are provided by the Internet, which can only provide best-effort services in practice. (3) Incentive of the service provider: One critical issue that has been largely ignored is that the access-oriented design may not be fair to the service provider who develops the infrastructure, because the service provider can only earn the access fee, which is usually paid monthly and is relatively low compared to the deployment cost. To address the above issues, the service-oriented design on the network layer has been proposed recently and has gained increasing interests from both the research and industrial communities. With such a momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research on the service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. Scope of Contributions The papers in this feature topic will focus on state-of-the-art research in various aspects of service-oriented broadband wireless network architectures. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to the following: - Broadband wireless network services and applications - 3G LTE services and applications - WiMAX services and applications - Service-oriented wireless mesh network architecture - Cross-layer approaches for service-oriented broadband wireless networks - Theoretical capacity analysis on service-oriented wireless networks - Topology control for emerging multihop wireless networks - Routing for service-oriented wireless networks - Optimal scheduling and medium access control for broadband wireless applications - Service orientation and call admission control in broadband wireless networks - QoS provision through interconnected wired and wireless segments - Security in broadband wireless networks - Reliability in multihop wireless networks - Network coding and physical-layer network coding in broadband wireless networks Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. However, papers presenting original contributions will also be considered, as long as the presentation is accessible and the paper length is kept within the appropriate limits. Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. For manuscript submission, authors should follow the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine manuscript format described in the "Information for Authors" at http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. There will be one round of reviews and acceptance will be limited to the papers needing only moderate revisions. Therefore, the quality of initially submitted manuscripts is very important. Throughout the world, many national or international projects in government, industry, and academia have been devoted to the establishment of ambitious research programs, such as the European eSafety initiative, the German Ministry of Education and Research sponsored Wheels project, the US programs derived from the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative, and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS programs. The field of wireless vehicular communications can be typically identified as vehicle-to-person communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and vehicular communication networks. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. In order for universal realization of wireless vehicular communications, many research challenges still need to be addressed to create good-performance, highly scalable, robust and secure vehicular technologies. ------------------ Topics ------------------ The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances and surrey the-state-of-the-art in this fast developing field. Snowbird, Utah, USA http://wons09.cs.ucla.edu ------------------------------------------------------------ Scope of the conference ----------------------- As more and more users become increasingly dependent on wireless and mobile communications, it is necessary to secure a reliable and dependable technology support for "on-demand" services through any of the wireless architectures that have been in development recently, such as mesh networks, WiMAX, WiFi, ad hoc networks, sensor networks, etc. However, there are serious challenges to overcome, such as the integration of infrastructure-based and ad hoc networks, robust algorithms for self-organizing, reconfigurable wireless networks, on-demand service models and their provision in a highly-volatile interconnection environment, and smooth interoperability of architectures. WONS, now in its sixth edition, has established itself as a high-quality forum to address these challenges in the context of a workshop that is rich in intense interactions and based on innovative contributions by experts in the field. This announcement solicits original submissions of high-quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks. With respect to these synergies the Workshop aims at the following fundamental questions: - How can navigation systems benefit from existing communication systems? - How can communication systems benefit from localization information of mobile terminals? This Workshop aims at inspiring the development of new position-aware procedures to enhance the efficiency of communication networks. On the other hand it also wants to encourage new positioning algorithms based on (outdoor and/or indoor) wireless communication and/or on satellite navigation systems.
