IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine (T-ITB) CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue: Affective and Pervasive Computing for Healthcare Starting in the 1960s emotion and affective phenomenon research has entered an Emotion Renaissance era due to new findings establishing the universality of emotions across the human species along with their evolutionary adaptive and functional role in 'rational' intelligence (e.g. memory, decision-making), social intelligence (e.g. communication, adaptation). In the past decade, additional studies such as the one related in Descarte's Error (Damasio, 1994), revealed surprising results about the nervous system organization, suggesting that emotions and affective processes might play an even more important role in intelligence, health recovery and prevention, and overall well-being than ever suspected. These findings on emotions and affects from psychology, neuroscience and sociology call for innovation in information and communications technology for enabling, and facilitating intelligent interpretation of affective health data; decision support systems for diagnostic, computer assisted health care; remote guidance and virtual reality applications in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; privacy security and trust necessary for user acceptance of technologies; human-computer interfacing and usability engineering; novel patient modelling; and multimodal intelligent affective user interfaces. This special issue will focus on the novel and practical ways, and solid contributions, to improve affective computing and pervasive technologies. We welcome papers that focus on novel applications of wireless telemedicine,of embedded sensor and actuators for affective processing, novel user interfaces and patient-modeling for use by caregivers and/or patients in a variety of health care domains, virtual reality and virtual environments for phychotherapeutic diagnostic, treatment, and support/assistance coaching. We also encourage surveys of available technologies, and reporting on user experiences. Papers that do not focus on affective social processing for healthcare and applications will not be reviewed. Specific interests are in (but not limited to) the following areas: . Network architectures for wireless telemedicine . Mobile service platform for continuity of healthcare . Privacy and security in affective/pervasive healthcare . Wireless and pervasive networks for telemedicine . Autonomic wireless sensor networks . Body area networks . Call for Papers 22nd International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems ARCS 2009 - System Architecture and Energy Awareness - held from March, 10th to March 13th in Delft, The Netherlands Submission deadline October 10th The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating systems research. This year's focus is energy awareness viewed from two different ways Firstly, this deals with the improvement of computer systems to be as energy efficient as possible (particularly for specific applications). One can think of heterogeneous multi-core architectures or reconfigurable architectures for this purpose. Secondly, this addresses the usage of computer systems to reduce the energy consumption of other systems, which might lead to problems of communication and cooperation. In 2009 ARCS will be hosted by the Delft University of Technology, which has one of the leading information technology schools in Europe. Based on these recent developments, it is clear that there are many other potentially useful tools and techniques developed in different scientific fields that the networking community is not aware of. With this Special Issue of Computer Networks, we aim to bring to the attention of researchers and practitioners novel interdisciplinary tools that can be successfully applied to the analysis and design of computer and communication networks. We solicit papers that innovatively use tools from other scientific disciplines in the service of understanding, analyzing, and optimizing computer and communication networks. A limited number of invited survey papers, presenting relevant tools and techniques from other disciplines, will also be considered for publication. Moreover, today's wireless networks are characterized by fixed spectrum assignment policies, which often lead to wasting large spectrum portions due to sporadic utilization of the licensed users (according to FCC, only 15% to 85% of the licensed spectrum is utilized on the average). This situation has motivated and pushed forward the development of novel low-power wireless Cognitive Radio transceivers with the capability of changing their transmitter parameters (operating spectrum, modulation, transmission power and communication technology) based on interaction with the surrounding environment. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) based on nodes equipped with cognitive transceivers have consequently emerged as viable architectural solutions to solve current wireless network problems resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. Scope and Contributions This special issue aims to consolidate and disseminate the latest developments and advances in the emerging area of Multi-hop CRNs, which is defined as a collection of cognitive transceiver-equipped nodes forming a multi-hop communication network. The main focus of this special issue is on networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs where the information needs to be relayed over multiple wireless links. The operation of Multi-hop CRNs is not limited to the discovery and allocation of wireless resources while avoiding service disruption for primary users. Additional tasks must be accomplished to sustain end-to-end communication, including identification of sets of relay nodes, ensuring that required bandwidth is available over all necessary links, and regulating resource sharing among all flows in the network. Most importantly, these goals must be achieved while coping with negative effects of frequent link outages due to primary user access. Preferably, the multi-hop CRN must also ensure that flow requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter bounds, are met. This special issue provides opportunities for the research community, the standardization bodies, and the industry to showcase the-state-of-the-art of the research on networking aspects of Multi-hop CRNs, implementation studies, and feasibility analyses. Moreover, since the success of CRN also depends on spectrum regulatory aspect, we also solicit critical contributions addressing the Multi-hop CRM architecture as it relates to spectrum competition under regulated, partially regulated or unregulated competitive environments. While the nature of the multi-hop CRNs necessitates high levels of interaction and dependency between the physical layer and protocols and solutions at MAC layer and above, the main focus of this special issue is the networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. Therefore, the design of cognitive transceivers and hardware, signal processing techniques, modulation and coding methods, physical layer channel models, as well as networking issues primarily concerning single-hop CRNs fall outside the scope of the special issue. We solicit papers written in a tutorial and survey style, accessible to the non-expert, presenting the state of the art. In addition, there is a growing interest on the local community and municipal levels to get broadband wireless access, but the number of options regarding network and service providers, as well as price and usage plans, is severely limited. However, affordable broadband for all is a key requirement to bridge the digital divide and to bring sustainable development to rural and developing regions as well as to support communities and municipalities. Today, existing technologies and plans for broadband access fail to address key challenges in terms of cost, deployment, or power consumption in order to bring broadband internet access to sparsely populated rural areas or to the masses of developing countries. While the focus of the general M4D conference is on multi-disciplinary research addressing the social, political, cultural and educational barriers to bringing ICT into developing regions, this workshop focuses on the technical and economical aspects of enabling (broadband) wireless internet access for rural and developing areas, as well as supporting communities and municipalities. Somit stellt dieses Arbeitsgebiet einen wichtigen Bereich der aktuellen Forschung im Bereich Systemsoftware (Betriebs- und Kommunikationssysteme) dar. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Im Rahmen des GI/ITG KuVS Fachgesprächs "Energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden" wurde eine Reihe von Forschungsgebieten erarbeitet, die einen wesentlichen methodischen Beitrag zu neuartigen energiebewussten Systemen leisten können. Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen. Somit kann es dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewusste Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Drahtlose Netze: Funkübertragung ist im Vergleich zu Berechnungen oft wesentlich teurer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie. Durch optimierte Technologien für die zuverlässige Übertragung, Vorverarbeitung und Zwischenspeicherung kann die Sende- und Empfangszeit verringert werden. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen den Aufwand für die Statusverwaltung zu minimieren. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den spezifischen Eigenschaften und Funktionen der verfügbaren Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich Kommunikationsprotokolle für energiebewusstes Arbeiten anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewusste Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, machine learning, and embedded systems design. The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. The two tracks have separate program committees to evaluate their submissions. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. IIC paradigm foresees seamless integration of communicating and computational devices and applications embedded in all parts of our environment, from our physical selves, to our homes, our offices, our streets and so on. Although IIC presents exciting enabling opportunities, the benefits will only be realized if application and security issues can be appropriately addressed. This special issue is intended to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art research in the area of IIC, including novel applications associated with its utilization, security systems and services, security models. We plan to publish high quality manuscripts, which cover the various practical applications and related security theories of IIC. The papers should not be submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Submissions of high quality papers describing mature results or on-going work are invited.
