For increasing scalability and decreasing the cost of management and deployment, more and more studies propose using peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures to construct large-scale NVEs for games, multimedia virtual worlds and other applications. The goal of such research may be to support an Earth-scale virtual environment or to make hosting virtual worlds more affordable than existing client-server approaches. However, existing solutions for consistency control, persistent data storage, multimedia data dissemination, and cheat-prevention may not be straightforwardly adapted to such new environments, novel ideas and designs thus are needed to realize the potential of P2P-based NVEs. The 1st International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Networked Virtual Environments (P2P-NVE 2007) was held in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2007. To adhere to the theme of P2P-NVE 2007, the theme of P2P-NVE 2008 is to solicit original and previously unpublished new ideas on general P2P schemes and on the design and realization of P2P-based NVEs. The workshops aim to facilitate discussions and idea exchanges by both academics and practitioners. Student participations are also strongly encouraged. The recent significant advances in almost all research areas related to these networks have enabled a wide spectrum of applications, including collaborative computing, disaster recovery, inter-vehicle communications, mobile access to Internet, surveillance and monitoring, intelligent agriculture, habitat monitoring, automation and control, intelligent home, etc. Service-oriented computing is gaining popularity in today's business environments by providing flexibility to seamlessly compose multiple distributed service components into different applications, processes, and more complex services. Though service-oriented computing has been well studied in wired networks, it remains a nascent area of research in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The frequent mobility, the limited computation/storage capability, and battery power in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks require more innovative service composition, advertisement, discovery, and invocation mechanisms to migrate service-oriented computing to wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The aim of this special session is to foster interactions among researchers from industry and academia on all aspects of service-oriented wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. International Workshop on Collaboration and Cognition in Next Generation Networks (CoNGN 2008) www.criticalnet.org/CoNGN In conjunction with CollaborateCom 2008 Orlando, Florida, November 2008 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rapid developments in the Internet and emerging alternative network protocol stacks promise unprecedented levels of sharing of information, computing and communication resources through distributed collaborations of diverse network elements. Collaborative networking comprises complex systems with many tunable interdependent components, parameters and network performance objectives. To realize their potential, collaborative networks need to provide effective and efficient support for ubiquitous integration of heterogeneous technologies such as mobile devices and infrastructures, web services, grid computing systems, various operating environments, and diverse COTS products. In addition, research is needed to provide network cognition, which entails learning and reasoning by the diverse network elements to dynamically select the ideal network operating state and adapt to varying network and group contexts in order to optimize end-to-end performance of the network as a whole. Moreover, networking aspects such as autonomicity, security, trust, management, quality-of-service support and localization need to be cognizant of group dynamics. Aparently, numerous challenges face the realization of collaborative networking. These challenges include balancing the competing goals of collaboration, autonomy and security; allowing mobile users and groups to seamlessly communicate throughout multiple heterogeneous networks and enjoy multiparty multimedia applications while on the move between different administrative domains; developing new APIs to enable applications to detect available access networks and learn their characteristics, thus becoming aware of location, context, and quality-of-service; and carefully optimizing network parameters across the entire protocol stack. The key goal of this workshop is to foster active interactions among diverse researchers and practitioners, and generate added momentum towards research addressing collaborative and cognitive networking aspects. 11th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management 1 - 5 June, 2009, New York, New York, USA "Making Management Scalable, Robust, Cost-Effective and Revenue-Generating" http://www.ieee-im.org/ The Eleventh IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2009) will be held on 1 - 5 June 2009 at Columbia University in New York, New York, USA. The IM series of conferences has been held in odd-numbered years since 1989 (taking turns with its sibling conference NOMS), and has established itself as the main venue for original research in the area of management, operations and control of networks, networking services, networked applications, and distributed systems. IM 2009 will build on the successes of its predecessors and serve as the primary forum for technical exchange among the research, standards, vendor and user communities in the network management field. The symposium is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and Distributed Systems, and by the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM). Despite the ongoing research in the last two decades, and the great improvements in management tools and systems, integrated management of networked systems is still facing many challenges. With a continued increase in connectivity and the deployment of wireless technologies, there has been a dramatic growth in the size and complexity of networked systems at the same time that reliance upon them has increased. This dependence has highlighted the need for these systems to be reliable, secure and have predictable performance characteristics. Management mechanisms are keys to achieving these goals, but they must not add significantly to complexity and cost or the problems will be compounded. In short we need to Make Management Scalable, Robust, and Cost-effective, and to make sure it helps generate the revenue to support it. IM 2009 will be organized into technical and application sessions, panels, and tutorials. In addition, it will feature an industrial experience track to share Practical lessons learned by the user and vendor communities, posters, and birds-of-a-feather sessions. Paper submissions will undergo a stringent review process implemented by the Technical Program Committee, which includes the most respected experts in the field. We encourage papers that break new ground or present insightful results based on experience with integrated management of networks, systems, applications and services. Authors are invited to submit original contributions in PDF format through the IM 2009 web site. Papers must be written in English. Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere can be submitted. Self-plagiarized papers and multiple submissions will be rejected without further review. Full papers are required for review. If accepted, the maximum length of each paper will be 10 printed pages including figures in IEEE 2-column style. IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications CALL FOR PAPERS Wireless and Pervasive Communications for Healthcare Wireless and Pervasive Communications for Healthcare, a new and growing interdisciplinary field, calls for innovation in information and communications technology to facilitate reliable, comprehensive, and high quality heathcare. Advances in networking infrastructure as well as middleware are vital to delivering telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. In-home care for elderly persons is costly and can require sensors, wireless monitoring devices, and networking infrastructure and middleware to automatically contact emergency services. Healthcare is motivating unique basic research challenges in wireless and pervasive communications due to requirements for safe signal propagation characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, high quality image and video transmission, and the need for safe, secure, and dependable operation. The goal of this issue is to report on cutting-edge research in communications for healthcare. Basic research papers are solicited, but papers on systems integration or deployment will also be considered. We seek papers that describe original and unpublished contributions, and that reflect those aspects of communications research for healthcare which are distinctly different from communications research in general. This special issue aims at bringing together state-of-the-art contributions of wireless monitoring, control, actuator coordination as well as their co-designs. In recent years, the demand for wireless communications in many monitoring and control applications has grown tremendously, such as military, aerospace, industrial, commercial, environmental, and health monitoring, etc. Some new technologies like Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Mobile Robots, and Bluetooth have already made significant contribution to data acquisition. As the same time, they arise some new challenges to guarantee a highly reliable, accurate, and fault-tolerant process. It is a critical issue to develop innovative approaches to deal with multi-variable, multi-space problem domains (detection, identification, tracking, data fusion, energy-efficiency, and fault-tolerant framework) as well as practical implementation in wireless monitoring and control application. The purpose of the special issue is to focus on the novel ways by which monitoring, detection, identification, coordination and control schemes are applied in wireless monitoring and control applications. ************************************************************************** CALL FOR PAPERS 1st Workshop on Wireless Broadband Access for Communities and Rural Developing Regions Co-located at 1st International Conference on "M4D" - Mobile Communication Technology for Development", http://m4d.humanit.org/ December 11-12, 2008, Karlstad University, Sweden Sponsored by E-CLIC (EU-regional funds) ************************************************************************** Broadband internet access is at present available only to a small portion of the world's population, and there is a significant penetration discrepancy not only between different countries but also between different regions and areas within a given country. In addition, there is a growing interest on the local community and municipal levels to get broadband wireless access, but the number of options regarding network and service providers, as well as price and usage plans, is severely limited. However, affordable broadband for all is a key requirement to bridge the digital divide and to bring sustainable development to rural and developing regions as well as to support communities and municipalities. Today, existing technologies and plans for broadband access fail to address key challenges in terms of cost, deployment, or power consumption in order to bring broadband internet access to sparsely populated rural areas or to the masses of developing countries. While the focus of the general M4D conference is on multi-disciplinary research addressing the social, political, cultural and educational barriers to bringing ICT into developing regions, this workshop focuses on the technical and economical aspects of enabling (broadband) wireless internet access for rural and developing areas, as well as supporting communities and municipalities. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners and to serve as a forum for presenting and discussing state of the art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. Journal of Telecommunication Systems (http://www.springer.com/business/business+information+systems/journal/11235 ) Special Issue on Secure Multimedia Services Introduction During the last decade, various techniques have been proposed to improve multimedia service systems' security. For example, multimedia encryption is used for confidentiality protection of multimedia content, multimedia authentication for integrity detection, digital watermarking for ownership authentication or copy tracing, Conditional Access (CA) for access control, and Digital Rights Management (DRM) for copyright management, etc. In addition, in different networks, such as the Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and sensor network, different secure protocols and algorithms are required to provide system security. All these topics are in active development. This special issue aims to expose the readership to the latest research results on secure multimedia services in telecommunication systems. It will include a number of related topics, demonstrate pioneer work in this field, investigate the novel solutions and discuss the future trends in this field. Topics Submitted papers may focus on architecture construction, algorithm design or hardware implementation. Both review papers and technical papers are expected. Many novel and attractive applications are made possible, such as advanced automotive systems, environmental control, critical infrastructure control, high confidence medical devices and systems, etc. In these applications, a large scale wireless networking system that consists of massive numbers of connected processing elements, sensors, and actuators often plays a key role. The high complexity of such large scale heterogeneous systems raises new challenges to the system design: we expect the system to be context-aware and self-adaptive to internal and external environments to achieve reliable and robust performance; to be self-organizing and scalable so that managing and maintaining costs could be minimized; to have programmable architecture and protocols for achieving optimal performance in different situations/scenarios, etc. These challenges need to be addressed under joint efforts from different areas, such as networking, system, control, AI, biology, and others. The special issue seeks original and unpublished papers that address theoretical and experimental work related to self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems (SASOWNS). The submitted papers must be written in English and describe original research not published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences. Parallel submissions will not be accepted. If an earlier version of the manuscript was published/accepted in conferences, authors should state so in the cover letter. The manuscript must be a substantial extension to the previously published/accepted work and a summary of changes and a copy of the previous conference paper must be submitted together with the submission to the special issue. Guest editors will pre-screen submitted manuscripts for their suitability in the issue. Submissions passing the pre-screen process will go through a rigorous peer-review process according to the standards of TAAS. Submitting a paper implies the willingness of reviewing one paper submitted to the special issue. Sensors for activity recognition and GPS for location are now being shipped in millions of top end mobile phones. This complements other sensors already on mobile phones such as high-quality cameras and microphones. At the same time we are seeing sensors installed in urban environments in support of more classic environmental sensing applications, such as, real-time feeds for air-quality, pollutants, weather conditions, and congestion conditions around the city. Collaborative data gathering of sensed data for people by people, facilitated by sensing systems comprised of everyday mobile devices and their interaction with static sensor webs, present a new frontier at the intersection between pervasive computing and sensor networking. This workshop promotes exchange among sensing researchers involved in areas, such as, mobile sensing, people-centric and participatory sensing, urban sensing, public health, community development, and cultural expression. It focuses on how mobile phones and other everyday devices can be employed as network- connected, location-aware, human-in-the-loop sensors that enable data collection, geo-tagged documentation, mapping, modeling, and other case-making capabilities. This workshop is the third in a series of meetings held at SenSys over last few years. The first workshop in 2006 dealt with the concept of the world sensor web and the second at SenSys 2007 focused on sensing on everyday mobile phones in support of participatory research. We particularly encourage position papers on the following topics (but not limited to): -Applications and architectural ideas -Mobile phones sensing systems -Activity recognition and classification techniques -Data gathering, analysis and visualization of sensed data -Privacy and security issues -Sensing and its application to social networks -City-wide urban sensing -Machine learning for human and group behavior -Participatory and opportunistic sensing -Body area sensor networks -Sensing for creational applications, healthcare, public health, community development, and cultural expression. -Interaction between static sensor webs and mobile sensors Paper Submission Instructions: Submissions should contain 5 U.S. letter pages in PDF format, including all references, figures and tables. This new area is broadly defined as the use of personal communication technologies to provide and support individualized healthcare for patients in their home, workplace, and remote clinic environments. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion.
