Different types of wireless communication networks (BAN, PAN, LAN, etc) are being deployed to address the needs of all kinds of users. Evaluating the performance of wireless networks and systems continues to be a critical activity in the design, implementation, and deployment of emerging wireless technologies. This workshop is intended to provide an international forum for scientists, engineers, practitioners, network users to share their experiences, present original ideas, report on state-of-the-art and in-progress research results on the empirical performance of wireless communication technologies and applications. In contrast to many past and current workshops also covering the topic of wireless networks, this event places special emphasis on empirical performance results obtained on actual, physical wireless network infrastructures, testbeds, networked hosts, and devices. Performance results obtained using only modeling, theoretical analysis or simulators without a strong practical performance component are not appropriate for this workshop. We particularly welcome submissions that present experimental performance evaluations of innovative wireless design/implementation prototype architectures, systems, and applications. We hope that the contributions to this workshop will help us better understand many of the practical performance related issues that are likely to impact next generation wireless networks, technologies, and applications. SCOPE OF MMNS 2008 Since 1997, MMNS has established itself as a major conference for research and innovation in the management of multimedia technology and networked services. The scope of the conference has been expanded in recent years to include management of emerging mobile and wireless networks. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers and scientists from academia and industry interested in state-of-the-art management of converged multimedia networks and services across heterogeneous networking infrastructures, while creating a public venue for result dissemination and intellectual collaboration. The convergence of existing and emerging technologies such as broadband, mobile, and broadcast networks is considered as a promising opportunity for existing providers to increase theirs service subscriber base so that 4G vision and beyond becomes a reality. An important research effort is undertaken by main actors to face the multidimensional, in terms of transport technology, session signalling, and QoS provisioning, heterogeneity of Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Efficient management of these services is a key ingredient in the effort to provide cost effective, innovative services, and mass market solutions that are likely to become a major source of income for different stakeholders. The need to evolve management tools, solutions, platforms and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobile and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, triple play (data/voice/video) convergence, and the integration of embedded computing and communications. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating converged multimedia networks and services. Inevitably, integrated management is a key element in addressing this challenge. The MMNS 2008 technical program committee is soliciting research papers in the broad area of network and service management that address new models, architectures and technological designs to enable multimedia and mobility proliferation in NGNs. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content — and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities….indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven’t been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications where in recent years, we have seen the emergence of 3G and 4G, WiFi and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Wibree, Ultrawideband and TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. Given such networks we will see a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. The roles of content provider and producer are no longer restricted to a few professional organisations, as more and more users share audio visual content or use community sites to support their common interest. Nowadays, both portable multimedia devices (e.g., PDAs, mobile phones, MP3 recorders, and digital cameras) and home entertainment systems (e.g., set-top boxes, game consoles, and media-centers) have become integral parts of the content distribution system. Also the underlying delivery infrastructure is undergoing major changes. There is a shift away from the traditional client/server model to systems based on the peer-to-peer paradigm, which let users share computational, storage and bandwidth resources. Moreover, the physical infrastructure is evolving towards some form of spontaneous cooperation of technologies, in order to support the creation of wireless ad hoc networks or wireless Community Networks. Thus, the well known engineering problem of delivering multimedia content through the Internet is evolving into the problem of how to dynamically create content distribution infrastructures and services. The purpose of this special issue is to publish high-quality papers on recent advances in the study of content distribution infrastructures with a special focus on infrastructures designed for serving Community Networks. Specifically, submissions are solicited for papers dealing with specification, design, performance evaluation and benchmarking of novel architectures and paradigms supporting Content Distribution in Community Networks where decentralization of content delivery is combined with self-configuring, self-organizing, self-managing, and self-adapting solutions at all technical layers in order to minimize the need for human intervention. The advances include WiFi (IEEE 802.11), WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), Wireless PAN (IEEE 802.15), sensor networks, Bluetooth, mesh/ad hoc networks, RFID, mobile IP, mobile management, smart antenna, Radio-over-fiber, OFDM/OFDMA, MIMO, cooperative communications, cognitive radio, and so on. These emerging technologies will significantly impact the design and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which aims to effectively provide higher vehicles safety, traffic management, and communications among vehicles and transport infrastructure. Currently, governmental institutes and societies in North America, Europe, Japan, and China, etc., are actively developing advanced wireless technologies for road, rail and maritime transport systems. For instance, the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band has been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. The IEEE 802.11p working group is developing enhancements of 802.11 standards to support ITS, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), vehicular telematics, and infotainment applications. This workshop covers the area of wireless communications technologies for ITS applications. It will bring together researchers to present new results and describe work in progress to reflect the latest advances in the state of the art in design, modeling, simulation, and applications of this area. In such cases, it is almost impossible to optimally conduct wireless resource management based on a centralized control policy. ICNP 2008 will be held in Orlando, Florida, on October 19-22, 2008. Papers with significant research contributions to the field of network protocols are solicited for submission. While former Mixed Reality applications were mainly stationary, advances in mobile computing and positioning technology have made this new type of games possible. Players wear mobile computers equipped with positioning technology, head-mounted displays, laptops, personal digital assistants, or mobile phones in order to play this kind of games. Early prototypes such as ARQuake, Human Pacman, or NetAttack showed the technical feasibility but also the potentials of mobile Mixed Reality games. Players find it fascinating to play their own avatar, to physically move in the game world and to directly interact and compete with their co-players. The close integration of Mixed Reality games in the physical environment offers a new player experience that cannot be achieved with traditional computer or console games. While the technology has matured since the first games in this field leading to Mixed Reality systems running on off-the-shelf computers and there are already some related commercial systems available such as Sony's Eye of Judgment, many issues related to the design, development and evaluation of mobile Mixed Reality games are still open and need to be further researched. We would like to invite papers to be submitted to this special session of DIMEA 2008 that focus on one or several issues of Mobile Mixed Reality Games including but not limited to: . Design and evaluation of Augmented Reality and MR games . Design guidelines for Augmented Reality or MR games . Ethical issues of mobile Mixed Reality games . Positioning technology for MR games including marker-based and marker-less tracking . MR hardware and software systems for games . A great deal of current research focuses on the networking aspect of interacting computer systems, which are typically large scale and highly dynamic. Interestingly, operational principles of these networking systems may exhibit great similarity with complex systems found in other sciences, when studied at an appropriate level of abstraction. This observation suggests that models and techniques developed in other sciences can potentially be used in order to evaluate and understand the performance of existing communication systems and also to drive design of new ones. The workshop aims at getting together researchers and practitioners from diverse areas, including biology, economics, physics, artificial intelligence and social sciences, to present their contributions applicable to performance evaluation and design of computer & communications systems. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide, such as the European eSafety initiative, the US programs derived from the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS programs. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society has decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications, with the first issues planned to be co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After a successful first WiVeC edition in 2007 (http://www.ieeevtc.org/wivec2007/) with over 150 participants in the 2-day event, the second IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 68th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2008 Fall conference and will take place at the Calgary Marriott Hotel in Calgary on the 21st and 22nd of September 2008. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. All accepted papers will be included in the VTC 2008-Fall conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. A selection of the best WiVeC papers will be published in a special issue of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine http://www.ieeevtm.org Authors are encouraged to submit full papers (a maximum of five pages) through the conference web site. Poster and demo sessions will be co-located to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction between presenters and participants. Demo proposals covering innovative technologies, platforms, analysis tools and applications related to wireless vehicular communications are encouraged. Submissions describing both mature or innovative systems and prototypes developed for commercial use or for research purposes, from industries or universities, are encouraged. The submitted demo proposal should include in a maximum of 2 A4 pages following the WiVeC paper format: 1. Title, authors and contact information. 2. Technical content to be demonstrated. 3. An overview of the demonstration set-up (the inclusion of photographs of the demonstrator are encouraged) and the results that will be shown to attendees. 4. Any URLs that link to screen-shots, live demos, or related information The authors should also email the Demo Chair with information on the equipment or facilities required for the system demonstration (e.g., power supplies, Internet connections, table dimensions, etc). Demonstrations could be supported by a poster describing the general set-up of the demonstration, its background and technical content to be demonstrated. Demo participants interested to use a poster should also inform the demos chair. Demonstrations will be selected based on their novelty, technical quality, and attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Accepted demonstrations will be included in IEEE Xplore and the Conference CDROM. Please note that for every accepted demonstration, it is required that at least one person registers for the conference and presents the demo. However, no additional paper charge is needed for authors that are already presenting a regular paper in IEEE WiVeC'08. WAVE systems will fundamentally smooth the progress of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) by providing it with high performance physical platforms. WAVE systems will build upon the IEEE 802.11p standard, which is still active and expected to be ratified in April, 2009. Meanwhile, the VHF/UHF (700MHz) band vehicular communications systems are attracting increasingly attention recently. The fast varying and harsh vehicular environment bring about several fresh research topics on the study of WAVE systems and future vehicular communications systems, which include physical layer challenges associated with mobile channels, capacity evaluation, novel network configuration, effective media access control (MAC) protocols, and robust routing and congestion control schemes. The objective of this special section is to gather and circulate recent progresses in this fast developing area of WAVE and future vehicular communications systems spanning from theoretical analysis to testbed setup, and from physical/MAC layers' enabling technology to network protocol. These research and implementation activities will be considerably helpful to the design of WAVE and future vehicular communications systems by removing major technical barriers and presenting theoretical guidance. This special issue will cover, but not limit to, the following main topics: · 700MHz/5.8GHz vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V)/vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) single-input single-output (SISO)/MIMO channel measurement and modeling, channel spatial and temporal characteristics exploration; · Doppler shift study, evaluation and estimate, time and frequency synchronizations, channel estimate and prediction; · Utilization of MIMO, space-time coding, smart antenna, adaptive modulation and coding; · Performance study and capacity analysis of V2V and V2I communications operating over both 5.8GHz and 700Mz; · Software radio, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access technologies applied to WAVE and future vehicular communications systems; · Mesh network and other novel network configurations for vehicular networks; · Efficient MAC protocols development; · Routing algorithms and congestion control schemes for both real-time traffic warning message broadcasting and high-speed data exchange; · Cross-layer design and optimization; · Testbed or prototype activities. * * *Submission:* We only accept relevant original drafts in a PFD format that are not at present under review by other journals.
